huri-jo, or Shuri Castle, is one of the best examples of the Ryukyu Kingdom’s golden age. Shuri-jo was not only the residence of royalty and the spiritual center of the Sho Dynasties, it was the pride of the people. The original Shuri Castle was built in the year 1453 AD. The castle was surrounded by curved walls and contained various structures and sacred grounds or utaki—a common feature of all old Okinawan castles. Shuri Castle was the center of art and culture, housing many of the kingdom's greatest musicians, dancers, artisans and craftsmen. In 1879, the Japanese government presented the official proclamation that dissolved the Ryukyu Kingdom and made Okinawa a prefecture of Japan. Once home to kings, the castle was converted into a barracks. Japanese troops dug expanded tunnel

Shuri Castle

systems under the castle for their headquarters and command posts. With such a high concentration of military assets, the castle was reduced to rubble during the war. After WWII, Shurei-mon (the main gate of Shuri Castle) was rebuilt but plans to restore the castle stalled due to budgetary concerns. Finally, after years of lobbying by the local government, construction began anew in 1989.

In November 1992, Shuri Castle Park, modeled after the 18th century version, was partially opened to the public. Then in the year 2000 the castle was added to the worldwide list of World Cultural Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Check out the grandeur that is Shuri Castle on a local tour with Tours+ on August 20. e’ve all sailed paper airplanes across a classroom during a boring lecture. But the Japanese take paper folding to a different level—the art of origami is no child’s play. In fact it was originally meant for adults. Origami originated in China, where paper was first created in the first or second century, with the art of folding following shortly after. The earliest records of origami in Japan are from the Heian Period (794 to1185 A.D.). This was a time of artistic and cultural growth among Japan’s nobility. Paper was still a rare commodity and origami was a pastime afforded only by the elite. It wasn’t until the Edo Period (1600–1868 A.D.) that origami was enjoyed by the general public. The tiny paper sculptures were used in both religious rites and in gift giving. Serrated strips of

Origami

paper marked sacred objects in shrines. One of the oldest forms of origami is the katashiro, a symbolic representation of a deity made with jingū yōshi, a special shrine paper. By the early 20th century, more than 150 patterns were developed. Today, most Japanese schools include basic origami designs as part of their curriculum, the most

complex being the tsuru, or paper crane. According to Japanese legend, if you make 1,000 paper cranes, you will be granted a wish. If your wish is to learn origami, you don’t need to craft 1,000 cranes first. Just visit Marine & Family Programs-Resources on Camp Courtney on August 24. Register now at mccsokinawa.com.
