here’s a difference between wearing a costume and being a cosplayer. Anyone can don a Spiderman suit at a party just because it’s a costume party. It’s expected of people to buy the likeness of the latest pop culture figure at the store before Halloween because that’s the cultural norm. But cosplay is more than that. It requires dedication to the craft—both in the costume and to the character. Show off your hard work and dedication to your craft at Comic Con Okinawa’s Cosplay Contest. Cosplayers of all ages are welcome, with a children’s contest at Fun Land and a separate, adults-only contest. Each person will have two minutes to discuss their costume, and a panel of three judges will choose winners in each of the categories. Contestants will be judged on costume accuracy, design, creativity, uniqueness and execution. Costumes should be original or heavily-modified versions of off-the-
rack items. Please keep the costume appropriate for family audiences. Avoid overly gory or sexual costumes that aren’t appropriate for the kid-friendly audience (your costume may be rejected if it’s inappropriate or unsafe). The contest is limited to 50 entries (group entries count as one) so register early. Main Categories: Single (18 and up), Group (18 and up; minimum two, maximum four people), Young Fan Single (7–17) and Young Fan
Group (7–17; minimum two, maximum four people). Youth category participants must have a parent or guardian present. Subcategories: Recreation (costumes copied from an existing design) and Original Design (a costume design unique to the maker/wearer). Registration for the Cosplay Contest will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For a full list of rules and guidelines, please visit mccsokinawa.com/comiccon. i OLW

n a world of heroes, the real ones are behind the scenes. Artists are responsible for bringing the tales of good and evil to life. Seldom do these heroes have a chance to shine—gleaming in a burst of rays like Captain America, but this time they do. Show off your illustrative skills at Comic Con Okinawa’s Artist Alley Contest. Draw your favorite superhero, anime, manga, sci-fi, fantasy or cartoon character—it’s that simple. Bring your completed art to Comic Con Okinawa by noon, and have the chance to finally be rewarded for your work. A few rules: Artwork should not exceed 11 by 17 inches. It must be on paper or cardstock; any medium is appropriate (traditional, digital, color or black and white) and only one entry per artist. No graphic adult depictions or excessive gore.
Please print your name and contact information on the back. There are two age groups: 8 to 14 and 15 and up. The artwork will be judged on
originality and creativity. For more information and a complete list of rules, please visit mccsokinawa.com/comiccon. i OLW

omic Con Okinawa wouldn’t be complete without some friendly and competitive card and video game tournaments. Whether you're advanced or beginner, join other Magic: The Gathering players in this exciting, high-energy tournament. The world’s leading trading card game was the first of its kind and continues to thrive. In this game, you will play the role of a planeswalker, a powerful wizard who fights other planeswalkers for glory, knowledge and conquest. The maximum number of entries is 24. If that doesn’t suit you, join others in the Pokémon tournament. This is a collectible card game based on the Pokémon video game series where you will assume the role of a Pokémon trainer, using creatures and Pokémon to battle. Reduce your opponent’s heath points to zero to take their prize cards, potentially winning by collecting them all.
Video game tournaments will include PS4, Xbox One, Wii U and MOBA competitions. Games will include NBA2K17, Mortal Kombat X, Call of Duty Black Ops 3, Mine-
craft, Street Fighter 5, FiFA 17, Gears of War 4, Star Wars Battlefront, Super Smash Bros, Mario Cart, Call of Champions, and more. i OLW
