Disneyland & DisneySea

ake the perfect family holiday vacation: Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea. This vacation with MCCS Tours+ runs from November 26 to 30. Japan was the first country to be deemed magical enough to have its own Disneyland outside of the U.S., and as such, it is the world’s thirdmost visited theme park. DisneySea is no slack either–it sits right behind its counterpart as the world’s fourthmost visited theme park as well as the most expensive theme park ever built. Disneyland features areas such as the “old west” themed Westernland, Critter Country, castleheavy Fantasyland and the futuristic Tomorrowland. As you may have guessed, DisneySea is a nautical-themed park. Myste-

rious Island gets its name from Jules Verne stories and Mermaid Lagoon is, of course, home to the Little Mermaid. In addition, you’ll find Aladdin at the Arabian Coast and the “marina of the future” at Port Discovery. So forget cramming all your bags

in your dad’s old station wagon for a two week road trip to get to Disneyland. Let Tours+ take the hassle out of vacationing for you. Call your nearest Tours+ office today or visit mccsokinawa.com/tours for more information on this tour.

The Color Red

ed is generally called aka, and is a very important color to the people of Japan. There are many shades of red that can be seen in many places and in the old days, each shade of red had its own elegant name. Shûiro (vermilion), akaneiro (madder red), enji (dark red), karakurenai (crimson) and hîro (scarlet) are among the more common. The Japanese especially love the red that is obtained from safflower (benibana), which was very popular during the Heian period (794–1185). Many examples of clothing that were dyed with benibana can be seen at Nara prefecture’s Todaiji Temple—still as red as they were 1200 years ago. Many Japanese think of the sun as red (children usually draw the sun as a big red circle.) The national flag (which are called kokki) of Japan has a red circle on a white background, and its formal name is hinomaru—

which literally means, “the sun’s circle.” Red and white mizuhiki (ceremonial paper strings) are also used as gift wrapping ornaments (similar to bows) for weddings gifts. Even babies are called akachan or akanbô, although this is probably because baby’s faces tend to be red. The color red also shows its importance in the Japanese language. Many expressions including “akahadaka,” which means “complete-

ly nude;” “aka no tannin,” which means “a complete stranger;” and “makkana uso,” which means “an outright, bald-faced lie,” show the connotations of the color red. So the next time you see or hear red in Japan remember, it isn’t necessarily negative—unless the word happens to be “akaji,” which is a term born in the west that translates to “red ink” and signifies...a deficit.

Give Back By Giving Blood

D

Wavebreak Media Ltd/bigstock.com

o you want to help someone in need and maybe even save a life? Now is your chance to give back by becoming a blood donor. Blood banks need a constant supply of blood to maintain the amount needed for blood transfusions given to patients suffering from severe illnesses or injuries. It is a simple, easy process to donate, and just one pint of blood could save up to three lives. The Camp Foster Teen Center will host their annual Blood Drive on October 21. Stop by the Teen Center

between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. and help save a life. All military and DoD civilians over 17 may donate. Some individuals may be ineligible to donate blood for reasons that include a recent deployment, having lived in certain countries or having received a blood transfusion. To find out if you are eligible to donate blood or to learn more about the blood donation drive, please contact the Foster Teen Center (located inside The Spot) at 645-1004 or visit mccsokinawa.com/ youthandteen.
