he Ryukyu Kingdom has long-established ties with China. The first Chinese came to Okinawa 600 years ago and established trade relations that benefited both nations. To commemorate the relationship between the two, Fukushūen was opened in 1992, offering visitors the opportunity to feel as though they have been transported to a Chinese garden in Naha. The garden is built from materials brought over from Fukushu City in China, including the stones and wood that make up the various paths and bridges that

route through the park. The architecture and landscaping were designed by engineers and gardeners from both Naha and Fukushu City to ensure that the garden had the same look and feel as the gardens back in Fukushu. Visitors will find meticulously maintained plants, waterfalls, koi ponds and seating areas for their enjoyment. Fukushūen is free to the public and is open every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m except Wednesday. Access the park from Hwy. 58, turning right at the Kumoji intersection.

japanese phrase of the week

Pachinko

C Kore wa ikura desuka? How much is this? For details about FREE Japanese language classes, please call Marine & Family Programs–Resources at 645-2104/2106.

ourtney: I was at a traffic light the other day in front of a glowing, neon pachinko parlor and noticed a friendly tiger on a sign beckoning me to come in. I almost did, but then I realized I have no idea what pachinko is. I’m guessing it involves fluorescent lights and cute animals, right? Ryan: You’re half-right. The pachinko parlor has a bunch of fluorescent lights but, unfortunately, no cute animals. Just rows and rows of pachinko machines. The pachinko machine itself resembles an upright pinball machine. The

player twists a knob and shoots little metal marbles into the machine. The balls cascade along the machine, hopping through a series of pins. If a ball falls into a certain spot on the board, more balls are released. These balls are exchanged for prizes. Since gambling is illegal in Japan, these prizes consist of material goods. C: Is there any skill involved or is it mostly a luck thing when playing pachinko? And more importantly, why is there a pachinko parlor on every corner? R: Pachinko parlors make lots of

money—about $300 billion per year. That’s twice the amount of Japan’s automobile industry and about the same as the global drug trade. There is no real strategy in pachinko. Still, some people make a living playing pachinko. It is often alleged that some parlor managers illegally manipulate their machines to give players jackpots (after a long losing streak, of course) to encourage their return by fostering the illusion of luck or perseverance paying off.
