While we feature several unique accommodation options, what also makes this area so special is the diversity found outside your hotel room. Fantastic golf, great food, regional wines, mild weather year-round is all what really makes Monterey County so special.
We invite you to discover the Monterey County lifestyle and its vibrant atmosphere through the pages of this guide. Let us be the first to welcome you to the place that was called by landscape artist Francis McComas, “the greatest meeting of land and sea…”
Meet in Monterey County Where We’re Located Monterey County is situated along California’s stunning central coast. The northern edge of the county is about 75 miles south of San Francisco International Airport, and the southern county line is about 275 miles north of Los Angeles International Airport. Getting Here Monterey County is served by Monterey Peninsula Airport (daily commercial service to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver and San Diego), Amtrak and Greyhound. California Highways 1 and 101 run through the county, and Interstate 5 is a short drive east. Getting Around Group movements are seamless and scenic no matter where you start or finish in Monterey County. Rental cars and limousine services are available, and an efficient bus service operated by Monterey-Salinas Transit reaches almost every corner of the county. See schedules and routes at www.mst.org. Taxis can be called to any location. Maps Turn to the last page of this guide for individual regional maps. Or visit www.MeetInMonterey.com.
Weather Our slice of the California coast is consistently mild, with an average temperature of 57 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Spring and autumn bring warm, clear days and cool nights; January and February are cooler and bring the occasional shower. Expect coastal fog during summer months, with a misty layer that burns off in the afternoon. Inland temperatures are more significantly warmer, with summer daytime highs in the 90s. Early autumn is the coast’s sunniest time of year, but inland regions are bright and warm throughout the year. What to Wear We recommend dressing in layers so you’re comfortable no matter where you go. In the valleys, you’ll want less; on the coast, you’ll want more. Generally, light- to medium-weight clothing is appropriate, but in winter, jackets and raincoats also are a good idea. Meet in Monterey County Getting Oriented
Monterey
Monterey County is made up of many different cities each with a unique character and ambiance. We have ordered them so that the cities with the most meeting or convention-specific hotels rooms appear first. Please read on…
The City of Monterey is home to the Monterey Conference Center and features over 4,700 guest rooms across 67 properties of which 2,500 rooms in 11 hotels feature ample meetings space for groups. We have just over 2,000 committable rooms within a 3 mile radius of the Monterey Conference Center and can provide shuttle service, group housing services and other special offerings for citywide groups.
Situated 115 miles south of San Francisco and 320 miles north of Los Angeles, Monterey County is the virtual heart of California’s Central Coast. To the east, the county includes the verdant Salinas Valley, a lush growing region bound by the Santa Lucia and Gabilan mountains. Highway 101 is the county’s major thoroughfare. Our other highway, the world-famous California Highway 1, clings to the sheer cliffs of Big Sur, passes surfpounded rocks at Point Lobos and skirts the sandy beach towns of Seaside, Marina and Moss Landing.
First established in 1770 by Father Junípero Serra and Gaspar de Portola, Monterey served as the capital of California from 1777 to 1849 under the flags of Spain and Mexico. California’s first constitution was drafted here in 1849. Since then, many of the state’s other firsts have occurred in Monterey — the first theater, brick house, publicly funded school, public library and printing press. For decades, the town was famous for its fisheries. More recently, it has established itself as a cultural hotspot, as well. Take the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The Zagat Survey® U.S. Family Travel Guide has named the Monterey Bay Aquarium the top-rated aquarium in the nation, and overall No. 3 toprated attraction in the United States. TripAdvisor.com selected the aquarium as the No. 8 overall top tourist attraction in the United States, and Travel + Leisure magazine named the aquarium on its list of top U.S. destinations for young travelers, selecting the attraction for a spot on its “10 Places to See Before You’re 10.” Stand at the base of a towering, three-story kelp forest. Peer up at a dramatic wave crashing overhead. All of this, as well as the aquarium’s new Secret Lives of Seahorses exhibit, which opened in April 2009, and its popular Wild About Otters special exhibit, is tucked into a building styled after the old Hovden Cannery, which dominated Cannery Row for 90 years. Did somebody say “Cannery Row?” At the turn of the twentieth century, this part of the downtown Monterey area was where fish processing companies canned fish fresh off the boats. John Steinbeck wrote two books set in and around this industrial Mecca (Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday). Since then, however, the “Row” has changed considerably. Today the stretch is home to galleries, shops, fine restaurants and an IMAX theater. There’s live music and nightlife, too. The opening of the InterContinental The Clement Monterey on Cannery Row has been the realization of a long-running dream. Perched at water’s edge, the 208-room property has breathed new energy into The Row, with new shops, great vistas of the bay and ocean view dining.

Meet in Monterey County Sea Horse Exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Fisherman’s Wharf has changed courtesy Monterey Bay Aquarium with the times, as well. In the 1800s, this part of town was the epicenter of Monterey’s whaling industry. Now, visitors climb aboard modern vessels and journey out to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to admire and appreciate the Fisherman’s Wharf whales. These cruises, dubbed whale-watches by some, might lead to a glimpse of magical creatures from the deep: gray whales, Pebble Beach humpback whales, blue whales, orcas Home of the Pebble Beach or bottlenose dolphins. Meet in Monterey County A warm sense of hospitality pervades “America’s Last Hometown,” the moniker affectionately bestowed upon the community that locals refer to as “P.G.” In autumn, when the monarch butterflies return, it is also known as “Butterfly Town, USA.” Its oldest, smallest houses tend to be cheerful Victorian gingerbread. Even local celebrations recall a bygone era. The Good Old Days festival held in April introduces bonneted and starched-collared residents celebrating spring in the style of their ancestors, including parade, carnival rides, crafters, and live entertainment. October’s Butterfly Parade brings out every child in town to march in honor of the returning monarchs. Missed the parade? Go see the real insects in the Butterfly Sanctuary Annual Butterfly Parade, Pacific Grove (from October through March). Photo: Julie Armstrong
Pacific Grove An ideal hometown with great neighborhoods and downtown area is home to the historic Asilomar Conference Grounds. Pacific Grove has a number of other beautiful Inns and Bed & Breakfasts for those smaller meetings or getaways and is very close to Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Once upon a time in Pacific Grove, you couldn’t have ordered a sundowner at all – not even wine. The town’s founder, the Methodist Church, disapproved. The teetotal outlook of Pacific Grove’s founders was finally eased in 1969, to the relief of today’s award-winning gourmet restaurants.

Seaside
After a multi-year, $13 million renovation, 36-hole awardwinning Bayonet & Black Horse golf courses boast panoramic views of the spectacular Monterey Bay. A 330-room Fairmont Resort Hotel featuring 24,000 square feet of meeting space and a 14,000 square foot Willow Stream Spa will open on the grounds in 2011. The development project, spread across 440 acres, will also incorporate a residential component including 170 condominiums and 125 single-family lots. In addition to this project, Seaside expects to see many new upscale retail developments, luxury accommodations and multi-million dollar renovations debut within the city limits in the next few years.
Seaside’s meeting space highlight is the Embassy Suites Hotel. Close to the water, within 3 miles of the Monterey Conference Center, this hotel also has lots of meeting space on-site. The first town to the north of Monterey is the bustling city of Seaside. When coastal fog blankets the rest of the Monterey Peninsula, the sun is still often shining in Seaside. The city’s inland hills were home to the U.S. Army base of Fort Ord until the base closed in 1993, but today, outdoor enthusiasts rave about the miles of recreation trails that snake across the grounds of the former base, situated just minutes from the heart of the city. There are local parks, too. Laguna Grande Park hosts neighborhood picnics and vibrant music festivals every summer. Roberts Lake, a popular turnaround spot on the Recreation Trail, is a great place to catch glimpses of peregrine falcons and different species of waterfowl. Steady beachside sea breezes welcome kite-flying and hang-gliding.

And don’t miss the Feast of Lanterns, a summer festival that has celebrated Pacific Grove’s local history and culture for more than 100 years. This muchanticipated summer event culminates with a lantern parade to the beach and fireworks over the Monterey Bay.
Seaside is also home to California State University-Monterey Bay, the Leon and Sylvia Panetta Institute, and the Monterey College of Law, making it an important part of the Monterey Peninsula’s world-renowned educational community.

Meet in Monterey County Carmel Valley
Carmel
Just over the hill from Monterey, Carmel Valley’s inland weather is refreshing as it is cooler in the winter and warmer in the summer. Lots of golf courses, wineries and three great resort properties with substantial meeting space in the 50 to 150 guest room range provide great options for small to medium sized groups.
Whether it’s Carmel-by-the-Sea or the Barnyard or Crossroads areas, there are lots of options in Carmel. There are a couple key properties with ample meeting space for small to medium sized groups and lots of somewhat smaller Hotels, Inns and Bed & Breakfast properties for those smaller VIP groups looking for something upscale and unique.
Broad near its outlet, narrowing sharply along Carmel Valley Road, Carmel Valley owes its existence to the modest Carmel River that burbles along the valley floor. This river, home to thousands of steelhead trout, waters a multitude of recreational areas. For hikers and mountain bikers, the big draw is Garland Ranch Regional Park, 4,500 acres of diverse terrain that includes oak-clad canyons, waterfalls, Rumsien Indian habitation sites and old homesteads. Horseback riders craving a gallop across the hills can do so at several private ranches. Local elevation ranges from 200 to 2,000 feet. Exercise in the Valley isn’t limited to high adventure; the area is a top choice for golf, as well. Some of the more popular courses include Rancho Cañada’s twins, East and West; Quail Lodge; and the Carmel Valley Ranch’s unique Pete Dyedesigned course. For refreshment, stop by one of the region’s many wineries, the lynchpins of Carmel Valley’s status as one of Monterey County’s nine American Viticultural Areas. Approximately 40,000 acres of vineyards are planted here, and each of these wineries – including Chateau Julien, the largest – boasts a tasting room.
Carmel Valley Grapes
The Carmel Development Company distributed its first brochure in May of 1903 addressed “To the School teachers of California and other Brain Workers at indoor employment.” Promoting “a seaside town on Carmel Beach in the pine forest alongside Carmel Mission,” artists, musicians and novelists soon settled down, and were happy to shelter their friends from the big city of San Francisco after the earthquake of 1906. The newcomers were enchanted with what they found and settled in, sometimes for a season, sometimes forever. Poet Robinson Jeffers came to Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1914 and by 1919 had constructed for his family a sturdy home of stone known as Tor House, followed shortly thereafter by Hawk Tower. Among the many visitors that Jeffers entertained in 1925 was the young photographer Ansel Adams. Adams returned to the Carmel Highlands permanently in 1962 and spent hours roaming Big Sur and the shoreline in search of subjects. On some of those visits, Adams met and shot with another photographic genius, Edward Weston, who moved to Carmel in 1929. Weston’s last photographs, taken in 1948, were of Point Lobos. Today, art galleries in Carmel are abundant. A sensible starting point is the Carmel Art Association’s gallery on Dolores Street. Formed in 1927, the association hosts regular exhibitions by living artists and historical retrospectives by artists from yesteryear. The Carmel Art Festival, held every spring, is one of California’s largest, most prestigious, open-air painting competitions. Though every artist has a favorite Carmelarea subject, nearly all of them tackle the creamy stonework and red tile roof of Carmel Shopping & Dining Mission Basilica at least once. Formally in Carmel known as Mission San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo, it was the third mission built in Father Junípero Serra’s series of 21 missions. Built in 1771, the Franciscan missionary himself died there in 1784 and is buried before the high altar. Restored in the 1920s, the mission’s museum includes the first library in California, containing 2,000 antique books and Jo Mora’s monument to Father Serra.

Meet in Monterey County Big Sur For smaller, upscale groups or groups that are looking for something rustic and unique, there are a few great options in Big Sur. Exclusivity, great views, distinctive service really set this region apart. From Carmel Valley heading south, Highway 1 twists and turns along the cliffs toward Big Sur, one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in the world. That the road even exists here at all is a testament to local engineering. The Ventana Mountains plunge virtually straight into the sea, leaving little coastal shelf on which to place a roadbed. Beginning in 1919, Highway 1 took 20 years to build from start (in San Juan Capistrano) to finish (in Mendocino County). Since then, however, the road has drawn birders, bicyclists, marathon runners, movie stars and more.
The best way to get to know Big Sur is through its state parks and reserves. The first park south of Carmel is Point Lobos State Reserve, a jewel-like series of turquoise coves and craggy points where weathered Monterey Cypress trees have been twisted by the wind. If the mist can have the power of persuasion, if the salt water can be your muse, it will happen here. In this park, artist Francis McComas once described Monterey County as the “greatest meeting of land and sea.” After just a short visit, you’ll experience first-hand what he meant. Point Lobos isn’t the only park worth seeing along Highway 1. Other notables are Pfeiffer-Big Sur State Park, beloved for the two-mile Valley View trail that passes a waterfall that tumbles 80 feet onto a sandy, deserted beach, and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, where inland trails run through redwood groves to a pioneer-era mill. All told, the area’s half-dozen parks offer trails and picnic tables, beaches and campsites. For a stronger dose of luxury, Big Sur also accommodates with cozy cabins, inns and unparalleled resorts.

Marina A short drive north on Highway 1, Marina is just up the road from Seaside and Monterey (12 miles). There are lots of select service hotels here and some very unique properties set right on the sand dunes, all of which can accommodate small to mid-sized meetings while still 15 minutes from downtown Monterey, Fisherman’s Wharf and some of the other downtown attractions.
Paraglider at Marina Beach
Sheltered from Monterey Bay breezes by towering sand dunes, Marina is an intimate coastal community featuring luxurious resorts with spa services & elegant accommodations, as well as clean, comfortable motels, campgrounds and RV parks. Nature lovers enjoy Marina’s numerous parks and recreation facilities. Eight thousand acres of Bureau of Land Management terrain is open to the public for mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking, while interpretive signs at Marina State Beach help visitors discover the unique plants and animals that inhabit the dunes.

Marina’s skies are often filled with an array of hang-gliders, paragliders, wind-sculptures and kites of all sizes and degrees of complexity. A beachfront launching pad is available if you bring your own hang-glider. If you have even loftier ambitions, Marina’s municipal airport offers sightseeing, helicopter and skydiving flights.
Each fall, Marina’s municipal airport celebrates its heritage when the Marina Air Faire gathers dozens of vintage planes, experimental, contemporary aircraft and retired “warbirds” and fighter training aircraft. This display also features living history from retired soldiers, sailors and airmen, as well as games and a chili cook-off. Another popular draw in Marina is the annual Festival of the Winds, a celebration of the breezes that sculpt the town’s oceanfront dunes. The celebration features kite flying, hang-gliding, wind-related art and science projects, giant kite demonstrations and kitemaking workshops, as well as live music and entertainment, food and vendor booths selling local treasures and delicacies. Marina is also home to one of the esteemed members of the California State University system. California State University-Monterey Bay opened in the fall of 1995 between Marina and the neighboring community of Seaside and is a thriving educational community that continues to expand its programs and accolades. The university recently finished construction of a 136,000-square-foot library, which will shelve 573,000 books, and was built to the U.S. Green Building Council’s silver standard for Leaders in Environmental and Energy Development certification. Construction cost $69 million, with $56 million in state funding and the balance coming from private donations.

Meet in Monterey County Downtown Salinas, National Steinbeck Center Photo: Kerrick James
The Farm Photo: Kerrick James
Salinas For group business, there are a few smaller select service properties with great reputations in this area that are great for groups doing business with the areas agricultural companies and wineries or meetings interested in engaging the history of the National Steinbeck Center and Steinbeck House. When the Spanish first settled in Monterey County, a large slough ran through it, prompting the settlers to name the area Salinas, a Spanish name meaning “salt marsh.” In 1822, Mexico seceded from Spain, and the newly independent government granted large tracts of land, or “ranchos,” to settlers. Two of these ranchos were known as “Sausal” and “Nacional.” Adjoining parts of these land tracts became Salinas City after California became a U.S. territory. Today, Salinas is a thriving community – the “Salad Bowl of the World” – that is as proud of its history as it is of its promising future. And decidedly the most recognized Salinas icon is its hometown son, celebrated author John Steinbeck. Both the National Steinbeck Center museum and The Steinbeck House, Steinbeck’s boyhood home, pay homage to the literary icon. The National Steinbeck Center is an impressive destination for all ages, featuring interactive exhibits based on the author’s novels. Films and plays based on the author’s books play on multiple screens, and pages from Steinbeck’s original manuscripts are on display for all to see. The adjacent Rabobank Agriculture Museum features a montage of Salinas Valley history presented through photos, interviews and photographs of the communities Steinbeck included in his epic novels, East of Eden and The Grapes of Wrath. Hands-on exhibits explore modern day issues such as food safety, genetic engineering, labor relations, water conservation, nutrition and more. In 2007, the Los Angeles Times named the Center number one of “The Golden 15,” a list of California locations visitors are urged to visit to grasp the wonder of the state. The Steinbeck House, an 1897 Queen Anne-style Victorian listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is open for lunch Tuesday through Saturday and features a prix fixe menu served by wait staff dressed in period clothing. The House also includes a bookshop selling Steinbeck novels (in multiple languages), memorabilia and gifts.

A walk through historic Oldtown Salinas yields inviting boutiques, bright day spas, beloved local eateries and even Monterey County wine-tasting. On the first Friday of every month, experience First Fridays, a free monthly art walk. The event features local artists as well as light refreshments, live music and special promotions. Salinas hosts the annual California Rodeo, one of the top rodeos in the nation. Cowboys and cowgirls demonstrate their roping and riding skills in four days of adventure at the crowd-pleasing event. Other popular Salinas events include the California International Air Show, the Steinbeck Festival in August and the Holiday Parade of Lights in December.

Meet in Monterey County The Salinas Valley Situated along Highway 101, the Salinas Valley is the center for Monterey County’s $3.4 billion agriculture industry. Artichokes, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, strawberries, peppers, squash, carrots, asparagus, celery, tomatoes, mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, garlic, onions and flowers are grown in abundance, but out of all the produce, lettuce is king. The region produces 80% of the nation’s lettuce supply, generating more than $600 million annually. Monterey County’s delicate lettuces appear on grocery shelves from Portland, Maine, to Portland, Oregon. If you’ve eaten a salad in the last week, chances are the lettuce came from Salinas. A visit to the Salinas Valley isn’t complete without wine. Vineyards account for more than 40,000 acres of Monterey County farmland, and vintners in the area grow a number of popular varietals, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, to name a few. Loop through Salinas wine country by driving south on Highway 101, then head north on River Road; you’ll pass dozens of vineyards, wineries and tasting rooms along the way. Also located on River Road, Wild Things (at the Vision Quest Ranch), is home to a number of exotic animals that have appeared in movies and television, including a 500-pound African lion, a Bengal tiger and a growing number of elephants. Wild Things recently launched E.A.R.S. (Elephants of Africa Rescue Society), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting projects aimed at securing a safe habitat for wild, African animals and dedicated to providing a sanctuary for their captive cousins with a special focus on elephants. Wild Things offers daily one-hour public tours -including all holidays except Christmas and Thanksgiving at 1 p.m.(there is an additional 3 p.m. tour in the months of June, July and August), no reservations are needed. After the tour – guests are invited to return to the elephant playpen, where they’ll have an opportunity to feed one of the elephants housed in the African elephant sanctuary. Looking for an off-beat adventure? Adults can book a stay at Vision Quest Ranch’s bed & breakfast, which features authentic safari bungalows. Definitely a one-of-a-kind experience, but the icing on the cake is the elephant that delivers breakfast in the morning!

Rising along the east side of the Salinas Valley are 24,000 acres of wild and remote beauty — the Pinnacles National Monument. The park’s craggy monoliths and spires of golden stone are the vestiges of an immense, ancient volcano. Thirty miles of trails are the only way into the mountains, but alert walkers may be rewarded by spotting acorn woodpeckers, bats, mountain lions or coyotes. The park is home to 400 species of bees and a resident population of the endangered California condors, which were released into the wild in the earlier part of this decade.
Meet in Monterey County Castroville Beyond the sand dunes, farmland reigns supreme. The fertile soil of Castroville makes the city California’s undisputed artichoke capital. Castroville’s annual Artichoke Festival dates back to the late 1940s; its first Artichoke Queen was a Hollywood starlet named Norma Jean, who later went on to become Marilyn Monroe. Today, the festival celebrates 1,001 ways to cook the artichoke. Even the most accomplished chefs usually learn a tip or two.

Del Rey Oaks Nestled among the lush hills east of Monterey and west of Salinas is Del Rey Oaks. A quiet community of less than 2,000 residents, Del Rey Oaks includes a verdant Frog Pond Preserve that invites visitors to explore its trails and discover its wildlife. The community also includes the Del Rey Oaks Golf Center, whose driving range tucked into a tranquil valley is a favorite among locals. And Stone Creek shopping center is a convenient stop at the junction of Highway 68 and Canyon Del Rey Boulevard.
Don’t miss an opportunity to stop in at nearby Tarpy’s Roadhouse for a succulent bite of FireRoasted Artichoke or Rock Lobster & Prawns. Next door, Ventana Vineyards’ tasting room beckons with a seemingly endless selection of award-winning wines.

Meet in Monterey County Moss Landing The Moss Landing Harbor is the number one commercial fishing harbor on the Monterey Bay. A year-round port of safe refuge for recreational boaters and commercial vessels, the harbor offers more than 600 permanent and temporary slips.
Moss Landing is also home to a nautically-themed bed and breakfast, a dozen or more antique shops, and The Whole Enchilada, a celebrated eaterie along with some fresh seafood restaurants that are serving up some of the best of the ocean’s bounty. On the last Sunday of July, antique dealers from all over the state drop by to participate in the Moss Landing Antique Fair. The surrounding Elkhorn Slough (pronounced “slew”) is an estuary, one of America’s rarest ecological systems. The area harbors the largest tract of tidal salt marsh in California outside of San Francisco Bay. Visitors can view the slough’s sea otters, seals, great blue Partnering with the Monterey Bay Aquarium herons and snowy egrets; curlews and sandpipers are easily viewed from a flat-bottomed Research Institute (MBARI) to promote sightseeing boat. Another way to experience these creatures is to hike along the marsh on marine research and education, the Moss trails that start at the museum of the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. Landing Harbor District provides full public access to the environment. Founded in 1987, MBARI has three research ships and two remotely operated vehicles berthed in Moss Landing, giving them immediate access to Monterey Bay. MBARI also operates several autonomous underwater vehicles and maintains moorings offshore, equipped with oceanmonitoring instruments, as well as two moorings in the equatorial Pacific that are part of the NOAA Tropical Atmosphere A Moss Landing Fish Market Elkhorn Slough Safari Ocean (TAO) array.
Sand City Over the past several years, the small oceanfront community of Sand City has welcomed an influx of creative minds. A burgeoning artists’ colony has transformed warehouses left over from the city’s railroad days into studios and galleries. Several festivals, including the annual Artists Equity Open Studios Tour and the West End Celebration, showcase these studios and encourage visitors to drop by and meet the artists. It is an ecclectic combination of rugged warehouses framed by sand dunes and crisp, blue ocean waves.

Meet in Monterey County Soledad Farther south along the Highway 101 corridor is Soledad. This city’s history is rooted in agriculture, visible through a historic downtown flanked by generations of family farms. Today, while some Soledad farmers grow vegetables, most of them specialize in wine grapes. Local wineries include Marilyn Remark, Boyer, Blackstone, Pessagno, Manzoni Estate, San Saba, Chalone Vineyard, Hahn Estates/Smith & Hook Winery, Paraiso Vineyards and Scheid Vineyards.

The most visible historic landmark is the town’s namesake, the historic Mission Nuestra Señora de la Soledad. This Spanish-style structure sits peacefully in the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains, the range that separates Salinas Valley from the Big Sur coast. Founded in 1791 by Father Fermín Francisco de Lasuén, the mission continues to celebrate cultural traditions such as the annual Mission Nuestra Señora de Soledad Grape Stomp Festival, Soledad Community Parade and Fiesta in June, and a barbecue with mariachi bands in October.
