LOYOLA’S NEW ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE Loyola is proud to announce that Harry Shearer, voice of more than 20 characters on the The Simpsons and bass player for the satirical rock group Spinal Tap, recently signed on as an artist-in-residence at the College of Music and Fine Arts. We are thrilled to have Harry working with us— he is a brilliant artist and a great friend of New Orleans.

DEAR LOYOLA ALUMNI, PARENTS, AND FRIENDS, Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts welcomes you to another exciting year of the Montage Series. Music lovers will enjoy an encore visit by the Irish singing trio The Priests; a concert by the Vienna Boys Choir; a celebration of Wagner and Verdi, featuring acclaimed opera stars Greer Grimsley ’76 and Alfred Walker ’96; and the continuation of the LPO Masterclass Series. Jazz Underground will include more performances at the U.S. Mint, and the Loyola Jazz Festival will boast clarinetist Victor Goines ’84. Our Department of Theatre Arts and Dance will present an ambitious season, including Patient A, a powerful drama about AIDS; Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice; Michael Tremblay’s Albertine in Five Times; and the Sherlock Holmes mystery, Hound of the Baskervilles. As usual, our fall and spring ballet concerts will be season highlights. Loyola’s Art and Design department will present lectures and exhibits by prominent artists, as well as our popular student exhibits. Through community outreach, we bring our students closer to the original intent of Jesuit education—to save souls through service to others. It is through the actions of our faculty, students, staff and friends that Ignatius of Loyola’s profound vision comes to life, invigorated and lifted through the arts. Our college provides an opportunity to discover a depth of thought that is transformative and spiritually nourishing. As I enter into my fifth year as dean, I am honored by the dedication of our Visiting Committee, which provides support through generous gifts and guidance. Donors like these have helped us purchase a new Steinway piano, stage large-scale productions, create student scholarships, and joined us in planning new and expanded performance facilities. Without our donors, many of these things simply could not happen—please keep this in mind during your visits, and if possible, assist us with a gift which matches your own capacity. We welcome you to our campus and encourage you to participate in the life of this wonderful institution!

Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D. Dean, College of Music and Fine Arts David P. Swanzy Distinguished Professor of Music

Harry will serve as a source of professional advice and guidance in filmmaking for Loyola students and will offer workshops on writing, acting, and directing. Many students will gain hands-on experience as interns and assistants for the legendary funnyman, who will use Loyola’s state-of-the-art recording and filming studios for many of his own productions. A frequent guest in Loyola professor Jim Gabour’s classes and the college’s Music Industry Forums, Harry tackles his new role with the same humor and energy for which he is renowned. “For a curmudgeon like me, seeing all those bright, optimistic young people is impossibly depressing,” Harry said. “But since I had tried teaching early in my youth (and liked it), these meetings revived my nascent interest in pounding my view of the world into malleable young minds. The offer to be artist-in-residence at Loyola allows me to pursue this mission with renewed vigor. And who knows? When one of them becomes a movie mogul, he or she may throw me a halfway-decent part.” Harry made his first on-screen appearances in Abbott and Costello Go to Mars and The Robe in 1953 at age 7. In a career spanning more than 60 years since then, he has worked as a writer, producer, director, actor, radio host, author, and voice-over talent.

SERVICE AND LOYOLA’S COLLEGE OF MUSIC AND FINE ARTS In a famous address at Georgetown University in June of 1989, former Secretary General Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., stated that the Jesuits proclaim the service of faith through the promotion of justice as their primary mission, and that it must be integrated as a priority into each Jesuit work. The purpose of Jesuit education is to form men and women “for others.” The Society of Jesus has always sought to imbue students with values that transcend the goals of money, fame, and success. Loyola wants graduates who will be leaders concerned about society and the world in which they live, graduates who desire to eliminate hunger and conflict in the world and who are sensitive to the need for more equitable distribution of the world’s goods, and graduates who seek to end all forms of discrimination and who are eager to share their faith with others. In short, we want our graduates to be leaders in-service. That has been the goal of Jesuit education since the sixteenth century. It remains so today, and in our College of Music and Fine Arts, this zeal reveals itself in our daily effort to connect meaningfully with the world around us and to reflect and transform it through our art. Whether it is through our wonderful music therapy students working in local hospitals and schools, our music education graduates teaching throughout the region, our many alumni and current students who work as church musicians throughout the city, or through our summer art and theatre programs for young people, Loyola continues its service to the community in many ways.

JANUARY 2014 LOYOLA OPERA PRESENTS

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's The Magic Flute premiered to great acclaim in Vienna, Austria in September 1791. The composer's final opera immediately transports the audience to a fairy tale world. Prince Tamino, upon receiving a magical flute from the Queen of the Night, sets out to rescue her daughter Pamina from Sarastro, seeking greater wisdom during his journey. Papageno, Tamino’s birdcatcher companion, also hopes for a wife, but prefers good food and wine to higher learning! Their quest is riddled with countless obstacles, but ultimately love and light triumph over evil and darkness. Bill Fabris (The Pirates of Penzance, 2010; The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein, 2012; Candide, 2013) returns as stage director/choreographer, and Carol Rausch once again assumes the role of music director/conductor. JANUARY 24, 7:30 p.m. • JANUARY 26, 3 p.m. • Roussel Hall $40 preferred seating | $25 reserved seating | $15 Loyola faculty/staff/students

WASHINGTON GARCIA, PIANO February 21 MASTERCLASS: 12 p.m. RECITAL: 7:30 p.m. Roussel Hall Free admission

WRITTEN BY Michael Tremblay TRANSLATED BY Linda Gaboriau

The unflinching tale of one woman at five different times in her life, this award-winning play provides a moving portrait of an extraordinary “ordinary” woman.

Ecuadorian native Washington Garcia began his musical studies at the age of six, and his performances throughout Ecuador led him to become a seasoned veteran of the concert platform. Currently assistant professor of piano at Texas State University-San Marcos, Garcia has performed on concert stages around the world and has received numerous awards and honors.
