2010 | 2011 SEASON

COLLEGE OF MUSIC AND FINE ARTS

An early 17th-century Jesuit map of Canada

CELEBRATING THE 400th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARRIVAL OF JESUITS IN CANADA Beginning this year, the Montage series will adopt a theme that will influence several performances throughout the season. These themes are intended to communicate Loyola’s uniquely Jesuit heritage to our audiences and showcase how the arts are a vital part of Jesuit history. This year’s theme is a celebration of the 400th anniversary of the Jesuits’ arrival in French Canada, Acadia, in 1610. The first pair of Jesuits arrived in Acadia in January 1611 and included the Rev. Pierre Biard, S.J. (c. 1567 – 1622), a professor of theology at Lyon, France, before his departure. Several Montage events will highlight the contributions of the Jesuits in Canada and the eventual migration of Acadians to Louisiana in the mid-18th century. Associated with these events will be lectures by Loyola faculty explaining the thematic significance of the performance. Throughout the calendar, Montage events which will carry this Jesuit theme will be indicated with a † symbol. We hope that you plan to attend these events as Montage celebrates Loyola’s Jesuit heritage.

DEAR LOYOLA ALUMNI, PARENTS, AND FRIENDS, As dean of Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts, I feel especially privileged to present the 2010-2011 Montage series calendar and to invite you to share in the excitement of the upcoming season. There are a number of very special events in this year’s calendar— Emanuel Ax, one of the greatest pianists of our generation, will perform a benefit concert helping to rebuild and revitalize the arts in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region in October. In November, Loyola Distinguished Professor Col. John R. Bourgeois, ret., will conduct the world premier of his wind ensemble arrangement of Bach’s famous Goldberg Variations—as a part of that performance, I will perform the original keyboard version. Keyboard lovers will also be thrilled to know that George Winston will give a special performance in February benefiting the victims of the Gulf oil spill, with proceeds going to the efforts of Catholic Charities of New Orleans. Throughout the year, we will be celebrating our special theme—the celebration of the arrival of the Jesuits to New France in 1610—with concerts, talks, and exhibits which explore the contribution of the French, particularly to New Orleans. You will also notice that in this year’s calendar we include an envelope that allows you to contribute through donation directly to the college. Your donation will provide our students with the wonderful education in the arts which has been a hallmark of a Loyola education for nearly one hundred years. Please join us again this year—I look forward to seeing you at Montage! Sincerely,

Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., Dean, College of Music and Fine Arts

CAROL LEAKE Jesus with Barbara and Cecil, watercolor

COUPLES by Carol Leake WONDERLAND by Tom Strider Carol Leake, Loyola professor of visual arts, finds the human figure fascinating, which explains why her exhibit, Couples, focuses on the human form. According to Leake, the dialogue between artist and subject establishes an intimacy that is not necessarily part of the more straightforward relationship between artist and figure model, where the parameters are more traditional. Tom Strider, registrar for university collections at Newcomb Art Gallery, has studied paintings and drawings that explore physical metamorphosis and altered psychological states. This project, Wonderland, attempts to relate the two aspects by simple scientific observation. It references existing literature, such as Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and The Metamorphosis by Kafka.

ANGELA MANNINO Loyola alumna Angela Mannino '03 has maintained an impeccable career by singing in numerous operatic roles at prestigious companies such as Chicago Lyric Opera and Santa Fe Opera. In May 2010, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut performing in Berg's Lulu.

THE MISANTHROPE † A PLAY BY MOLIÈRE AS TRANSLATED AND ADAPTED BY NEIL BARTLETT DIRECTOR: Ben Saypol ARTISTIC DIRECTOR: Georgia Gresham

NOVEMBER 5 – 6 and NOVEMBER 11 – 13, 8 P.M. MARQUETTE THEATER, located in Marquette Hall TICKETS: $12 GENERAL ADMISSION $8 STUDENTS, SENIORS, FACULTY AND STAFF In Molière's masterpiece, The Misanthrope, characters are found milling around a sumptuous room talking and brooding about the court of King Louis XIV. In his contemporary translation and adaptation, Neil Bartlett turns the French royal court into a gigantic insider party with guests circling each other in a feeding frenzy of false flattery and political opportunism. In this production, Bartlett examines how society interacts on a daily basis. “Should we be authentic and brutally honest with each other but risk being ostracized? Or should we coddle and flatter each other so that everyone’s happy and we can move up in the world?” His modern, edgy translation/adaptation of this classic explores these questions within a compelling story complete with a love triangle, attempts at seduction, games of love, and a trial in the court of public opinion.

LOST BAYOU RAMBLERS and FEUFOLLET † This year’s theme for Montage is a celebration of the 400th anniversary of the Jesuits’ arrival in French Canada, Acadia, in 1610. This arrival in Canada eventually led to the southward migration of the Acadians into southwestern Louisiana, also known as Cajun country. These migrants brought with them huge influences on food and culture, including the emergence of Cajun/French Music. This month will feature a sampling of this musical genre with performances by Acadiana’s own Lost Bayou Ramblers and Feufollet. Also featured will be Fr. T. Frank Kennedy, S.J., Ph.D., the Peter Canisius Professor of Humanities and Music and Rector of the Jesuit Community at Boston College, who will give us a historical account on the early Jesuits’ influence on music.

LOYOLA OPERA THEATRE presents

SUSANNAH BY CARLISLE FLOYD Loosely based on the story of Susannah and the Elders in the Catholic and Orthodox Book of Daniel, Susannah is a timeless exploration of jealousy, intolerance, and human fallibility. A backwoods Tennessee community in the 1950s turns on the free-spirited outsider, Susannah, when she is spied bathing in the baptismal river. This modern American folk opera uses bluegrass fiddle tunes as musical inspiration to tell a tale of seduction, lust, bigotry, betrayal, and revenge.
