Celebrating our Past—Embracing the Future

DEAR LOYOLA ALUMNI, PARENTS, AND FRIENDS, Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote: “Because the soul is progressive, it never quite repeats itself, but in every act attempts the production of a new and fairer whole. This appears in works both of the useful and the fine arts, if we employ the popular distinction of works according to their aim, either at use or beauty. Thus, in our fine arts, not imitation, but creation is the aim.” Not imitation, but creation—that aptly describes the goals of Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts. Visitors to Loyola have experienced remarkable exhibits, performances, and scholarly presentations for decades, always leaving our campus richer in spirit and cognizant that Loyola’s aim is not just the creation of beauty, but the overarching mission of transforming the world. This year’s Montage season celebrates the centennial of Loyola University New Orleans, and we will bring the New Orleans and Gulf Coast communities some of the most distinguished artists in the world, including: the world-renowned Tokyo String Quartet; the Wynton Marsalis Quintet, featuring Victor Goins ’84; LPO maestro Philippe Entremont; pianist Fr. Séan Dugan ’77; and former Loyola student Brian Blade. The season will also showcase our typically rich slate of performances by the major student ensembles, as well as an equally distinguished group of Loyola faculty members, in addition to two performances of Bernstein’s Candide by Loyola’s Opera Theatre. Masterclasses this season will include Wynton Marsalis, Yo-Yo Ma, Samuel Ramey, Greer Grimsley ’76, the Jerusalem String Quartet, and many others. Please join us again this year. I look forward to seeing you at Montage!

Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D. Dean, College of Music and Fine Arts David P. Swanzy Distinguished Professor of Music

This year marks an important milestone in the life of the College of Music and Fine Arts: with the approval of the faculty and the support of President Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., a School of Music—as well as Departments in Music Industry Studies, Theatre Arts and Dance, and Art and Design—have been formed as units within the college. These new designations more realistically describe Loyola’s programs in the arts. Since Katrina, the college has experienced unprecedented growth—from 200 undergraduate majors in 2000 to nearly 800 students today. The college began as a separate entity: the New Orleans Conservatory of Music and Dramatic Art was created in 1919 by Dr. Ernest Schuyten, who conducted the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. This conservatory became a part of Loyola University New Orleans in 1932. In 2006, the College of Music incorporated departments in theatre and art, and was re-named the College of Music and Fine Arts. Throughout these manifestations, the college has maintained its personality and unique commitment to the arts—none of the other 27 Jesuit colleges or universities in the United States has a performing arts program of similar size or scope. Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts also maintains collaborative relationships with the community of New Orleans through our sponsorship of the Loyola Summer Jazz Band Camp, the Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp, Loyola’s KidsArt, and, beginning this year, the Southern Rep Theatre youth camps. We also work collaboratively with many local arts organizations by supporting the New Orleans Keyboard Festival, the Metropolitan Opera Auditions, and for the first time in 2012, the Schmidt Vocal Competition.

FATHER JAMES C. CARTER, S.J., has always been an avid supporter of the arts, particularly of Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts. During his tenure as university president, Fr. Carter was an outspoken proponent of arts education and demonstrated time and time again his commitment to Loyola’s unique tradition of excellence in this field. With the help of his dynamic leadership, we were able to increase the number and size of our scholarships to attract new students and gained additional funds to enhance our programs. Most importantly, Fr. Carter has been, and continues to be, one of the most effective and valued friends of the college—his presence at our events and close relationship with our community of patrons has been invaluable. Fr. Carter’s ongoing dedication to the arts at Loyola has been essential to our continued success. Our award-winning faculty string quartet bears his name proudly, and we are grateful for all that he continues to do. — ALLEN NISBET, Associate Professor of Music The inaugural performance of the Fr. James Carter, S.J., String Quartet is on October 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Roussel Hall.

JANUARY 2013

Leonard Leonar d Ber Bernstein’s nstein’s

Candide C Ca andide Leonard Bernstein’s Candide opened on Broadway as a musical in 1956. Based on Voltaire’s 1759 satiric novel of the same name, the fast-paced comic operetta follows the adventures of the exiled—yet relentlessly optimistic—Candide, throughout the Old World and the New. Blindly following the advice of his tutor Pangloss, he careens through a series of wild adventures and astonishing coincidences to return home to his beloved Cunegonde, enlightened by a new, more realistic philosophy of life. Bill Fabris (The Pirates of Penzance, 2010; The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein, 2012) returns as stage director/choreographer, and Carol Rausch once again assumes the role of music director/conductor. January 18, 7:30 p.m. • January 20, 3 p.m. • Roussel Hall $40 preferred seating | $25 reserved seating | $15 Loyola faculty/staff/students

This annual program provides opportunities for non-beginner students in grades 7 – 12 to increase their skills, understanding, and appreciation of jazz. Students work closely with the Loyola Jazz Faculty for masterclasses, private lessons, improvisation and combos, and by attending evening concerts featuring faculty and special guests. Scholarships to the Jazz Band Camp will be awarded to outstanding performers at the Loyola University Jazz Festival, held March 8 – 9, 2013.
