GRINDSTAFF 90TH Marjorie Grindstaff, a resident of Wesley Village, will celebrate her 90th birthday March 5. A family get together will be held in May to celebrate with her. Marjorie was born in Bollinger county, Missouri March 5, 1925, to Rada and Ralph Upchurch. She married Roy Grindstaff April 26, 1943. They were married for 67 years. He died in February 2011. They had four children: Barbara Norton, of Urbana; Paul Grindstaff, of

La Junta, Colo.; Kelly Grindstaff, of Macomb, ; and Martha Goode, of Scottsdale, Ariz. She also eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Marjorie was a homemaker and worked in food service at WIU. She has been active in Wesley United Methodist Church. At Wesley Village she enjoys visiting other residents and welcoming new residents as well as participating in the many activities.

Gordon Melvin is 90 years young today, Feb. 28. He was born in his home near New Philadelphia, Ill. Gordon has farmed all his life, starting at the age of 12. He shucked corn as young man for $3 per day and haircuts cost 25 cents. That was when he had hair. Gordon would like to hear from from family and friends. WEGHORST 100TH Kathryn “Kate” Kelso Weghorst will celebrate her 100th birthday with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. March 7 at Wesley Village, 1200 East Grant St., Macomb. Friends and family are invited to attend her celebration. Kathryn was born on March 6, 1915, in McDonough County, to Charles and Ethel Allison Kelso. She graduated from Bardolph High School, where she met and married Ralph Caspall. They had five children, Fred and Larry, of Macomb; Ken, of Columbia, Mo., Dan, of Powhatan, Ark, and Kay Caspall Cummins, deceased.

listen that she has the “best family in the world”. She attended Western Illinois University at age 46, and began her teaching career in the primary grades in Brooklyn, Ill. She was later instrumental in starting a kindergarten program in South Pekin, where she also taught first grade. Teaching was her dream job and she loved it so much that she said she was getting paid to have fun. While working in South Pekin, she married Francis “Dutch” Weghorst and they lived happily together there until their retirement, when they moved to Little Swan

Lake near Avon, her “little bit of heaven”. She attended the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago at 18 and last visited Chicago at 88, riding the train by herself. Kathryn rode a motorcycle and horses, water skied and swam with her family when she was in her 80s and 90s. Kathryn started playing golf at age 70 and shot a hole in one in her early 80s. She enjoyed writing poetry. Kathryn gave countless hours of her time at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, ringing bells at Christmas and volunteering in the hospital gift shop. She is a proud member of the DAR.
