BLENDING

STYLES

There comes a time in many people’s lives when we hear them say "I don't need this big house anymore" and they decide to put the family home up for sale and move into a nice condo. The motivation behind a down size doesn’t matter as much as the items that you do, or do not, take with you. So often we have accumulated so many memories in the form of "stuff" over our life time that it becomes hard to decide what items you absolutely cannot part with. If this doesn’t sound like you, then you must be more of clean slate kind of person. Blending new items with your already cherished heirlooms can also pose a challenge. A long time customer, Anne, came to us in this exact same scenario. She had just purchased a beautiful condo overlooking the Edmonton river valley and was now trying to figure out how to make the transition to condo living. Anne, with help of McElheran's design consultant Lynne Chapman, had been feeding her addiction to beautiful furniture pieces for so many years that trying to decide what would make the move and what not, was going to be a challenge. In addition to that dilemma, Anne’s taste had always been very traditional and the condo that she had just purchased was much more contemporary. Anne knew that she would have to do some renovating to make it work but she wanted to be able to create a canvas that could blend many of her existing traditional pieces with the cleaner lines of the contemporary condo.

8

Anne and Lynne worked hand in hand right from the start. First, they chose to tear out a wall full of granite to soften the living room space. From there they renovated the kitchen with sleek contemporary cabinets and five blown glass light fixtures dangling over the island, juxtapose that with a traditionally wallpapered wall in the dining area right next to the kitchen where her very traditionally styled dining room set sits. "I wanted a little surprise where ever you looked," stated Anne. With careful planning and the purchase of a few new key pieces they were able to accomplish her vision. Take, for example, the new custom chair that was ordered for the living room. It was upholstered all over in a neutral plain fabric except the back which is done in a tapestry fabric. The only way you are able to see this contrasting fabric is when you look in the mirror that the chair sits in front of. Unless pointed out those little details are sometimes only noticed subconsciously, however they are the details that make the difference between good design and great design.

The co-mingling of the traditional with the contemporary in this condo was aided by the placement of artwork and area rugs that had been collected on many trips over the years. "I'm very happy how everything turned out", states Anne. We were able to blend the old with the new and create a space that guests feels comfortable in.

A Primer On Buying An Area Rug That Suits Your Décor And Lifestyle The look and feel of an area rug can add dramatically to the overall experience of a space. In addition to adding a cushioned surface to a non-carpeted floor, an area rug brings color, pattern and texture to your décor. Rugs can help define a space and add personality and panache. SHOW OF HANDS From hand-knotted to machine-made, every type of rug has its own unique craftsmanship and design features. As you shop for the right rug for your room, you’ll hear a lot of terms used to describe how the rug is made. Here’what you need to know: Hand Knotted The most painstaking method for crafting an area rug, hand-knotted rugs are of the highest quality, and can last 100 years or more. You can tell if a rug is hand-knotted by looking at the back—if the knots and overall pattern are visible on the under side, it’s genuine. Hand Tufted Not as meticulous a process as hand-knotting, hand-tufting involves a tool that punches strands of wool or fibers through canvas. These rugs usually have a cut pile surface and depending on their quality, typically last three to 10 years. Hand-Hooked Similar to hand-tufted, handhooked rugs use the same tool-driven process. The main difference between the two is the looped pile of a hand-hooked rug, as opposed to the cut pile surface of hand-tufted. These rugs typically last 3 to 10 years, depending on quality and use. Hand Woven Both hand-woven shag and flatweave rugs are manufactured on handoperated looms. The shag has a deep pile and lasts two to 8 years, while the flatweave version (often referred to as a kilim or dhurry) has a shallow pile and can last three to 10 years. Flatweave rugs are identical on either side and can be flipped to extend their life. Hand Loomed Wool Also constructed on a hand-operated loom, these rugs can have a cut or looped pile and are sometimes handcarved for design. They have a low to medium pile and typically last two to 8 years.

Machine Made These rugs are manufactured by computer-driven equipment and backed with a coarse latex backing to hold the fibers in place. Machine-made rugs typically last two to six years, depending on use.

Natural Fiber Tightly woven from plant-based fibers, natural fiber rugs are environmentally friendly and even biodegradable. They’re typically made from jute, bamboo, cotton, linen, seagrass or sisal and typically last two to six years.

Indoor-Outdoor These rugs are hand-hooked or machine-made with synthetic fibers to withstand the elements and resist fading. Resistant to mold and mildew, these rugs often have a latex, rubber or vinyl backing and can last one to five years, depending on use.
