MCGAW YMCA COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT

MCGAW YMCA | COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT

Dear McGaw Y Family, As a community and as people, our needs shift constantly. We may be focused on finding crucial childcare so we can continue working and providing for our families, finding a new fitness routine to strengthen our physical and mental health to show up as our best selves, or finding a place to live when we are suddenly displaced. When one challenge is resolved another appears, and that truth was even more evident with the COVID-19 pandemic. As a community, we have been forced to reckon with the many epidemics in our world, from widespread food insecurity to ongoing racial inequities, and we’ve come together as a Y to address these escalating needs by adapting rapidly. We’ve gone back to the solid foundation of who we are to build the infrastructure for a successful future, and I’m so proud of all that we’ve created even in lieu of these strenuous past couple of years.

“We couldn’t have done any of this without you. Together, we are constructing the future we want for our community, where all people are empowered to reach their full potential in spirit, mind, and body.”

From remote learning spaces to virtual fitness classes, when we were required to innovate and provide creative solutions, we did it together. We benefitted from the passionate partnerships of nearby institutions, such as Northwestern University, the City of Evanston, Evanston/Skokie School District 65, and Amita St. Francis Health, to launch programming for the entire Evanston community, for Y members, and for those who live at the McGaw YMCA. The Y has been here for our community, and our community has been here for the Y. I am so grateful that we have each other. This report highlights our collective accomplishments from 2020 and 2021 and demonstrates how we always put the needs of our community first. We couldn’t have done any of this without you. We are forever grateful to the members, donors, partners, elected officials, and staff who continue to stand with us to support our critical work. Together, we are building the future we want for our community, where all people are empowered to reach their full potential in spirit, mind, and body. Thank you for your willingness to stand alongside us as we shape and enhance Evanston’s future. With gratitude,

COVID-19 COMMUNITY RESPONSE

When it mattered most, the McGaw YMCA showed up to meet the ever-shifting needs of our community at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. We supported the 165 men who live in at McGaw YMCA with housing, rental assistance, supplemental food, supplies, and wrap-around services to help them stay up-to-date on COVID-19 resources and maintain social connections. We kept our doors open, using stringent health and safety protocols, and welcomed 1,850 visitors into our doors each week for fitness activities, while connecting 150 people each week in virtual fitness activities. We supported seniors through virtual book clubs and Healthy Aging events to connect them with technology training and to maintain social connections. We provided continuous high-quality early childhood education, Head Start, and SchoolAge programs to 675 youth, ensuring children and their families in our community received ongoing care and support while schools were closed and upon transitioning back to in-person learning.

“McGaw is home. Before and during the pandemic, the

We created five in-person Remote Learning spaces for grades K-8 that helped 60 school-age youth continue to thrive in school while learning remotely. We hosted Family Camps at Camp Echo, and summer day camps in Evanston to provide much needed access to outdoor spaces and nature.

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

In 2021, the McGaw YMCA formalized its commitment to equity and established a strategy for becoming an anti-racist, multicultural organization where everyone belongs. We also made a pledge to hold ourselves accountable to live a new mission and vision, and to center equity in all that we do. We continued our strategic planning process, which began pre-pandemic, and finalized a strategic plan that will guide our steps through 2025 with the following priorities: •

Strengthening Community & Social Responsibility

Education & Youth Development

Community Health & Well-being

Organizational Excellence

As we carry out our strategic plan, we will make continuous growth on our equity goals, provide access and opportunity to our entire community, especially those we are not currently serving or those who have been historically excluded, and develop and build the capacity of our staff to serve the needs of the community.

SUMMER FEST & FAMILY NIGHTS

PROVIDED FOR Y PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS & COMMUNITY FAMILIES

In 2021, we partnered with the City of Evanston and Northwestern University to launch a Summer Fest series in the parks to bring science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) learning to more youth in our community. As part of this partnership, we also launched weekly Family Nights, serving the whole family.

12 McGaw Y Residents participated in a new diabetes prevention program in collaboration with Amita St. Francis Health. Participants developed long-term strategies to manage their weight and eat healthier diets. 5

REMOTE LEARNING

SUMMER LEARNING

IN-PERSON SUPPORT DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR

IN-PERSON LEARNING FOR SUMMER MONTHS

2020 was a challenging year for kids, separated from their school, friends, and social-emotional learning opportunities. The Y was quick to innovate to meet the needs of students and their families and offer safe in-person programming. During the school year, McGaw offered in-person remote learning programs to support academic and social-emotional needs, partnering with Evanston/Skokie School District 65. In 2020 and 2021, we safely offered summer learning programs that provided continuous learning and enrichment opportunities for school-age children at both school and community sites. As overnight camping was unavailable to youth in 2020, we quickly pivoted to provide Family Camp opportunities at Camp Echo. After months at home, families explored Camp Echo to experience and enjoy the wonders of nature. In summer 2021, we returned to providing youth overnight camping at Camp Echo. In summer 2020, McGaw Summer Day Camp was one of the few in person opportunities for school age youth. Using a D65 school facility, we were able to provide 6 weeks of camp programming. In summer 2021, Summer Day Camp returned for a full summer of programming. Collectively, our summer camps provide 1,500 kids and families with a chance to find their adventure while discovering untapped talents and newfound passions.

COMMUNITY HEALTH & WELL-BEING

“To the YMCA staff and the group exercise class instructors, please hang in there and continue to stay positive, safe, and healthy! Looking forward to receiving your warm welcome at the front desk and sweating, laughing, and enjoying our time in classes

POP-UP FITNESS

VIRTUAL FITNESS

PROVIDED FOR THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY

AND SAFE IN-PERSON OPTIONS

Health and wellness programs were critical in 2020 and harder to provide due to social distancing guidelines. We hit the ground running to make sure our members and the community had access to the care and support they needed to stay healthy, prevent chronic disease, and manage the effects of the pandemic on the body and mind. In 2021, we provided pop-up group fitness classes in Evanston parks to include community members and help more people take charge of their health and wellness goals.

We immediately launched virtual workout classes, healthy living programs, and adjusted our in-person programming to meet COVID-19 health and safety requirements. We also expanded our virtual personal training options and took our group fitness classes to the parks so the community could join us safely outside during the pandemic.

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the U.S. — and at the McGaw Y! By popular demand, we offered free pickleball clinics and open play times for members and the community.

DONORS & VOLUNTEERS “The whole family loves the Y and what it does for building up the community. It has been part of our family history for nearly 40 years.” — Dave Hodgman

130 volunteers donated 1,984 hours of service to our Y in 2020 and 2021.

There were more unknowns than certainty in June 2020, but McGaw YMCA reopened its fitness facilities, early childhood education and school age day camp programs. By fall, schools were still not holding in-person classes and vaccines were still many months away. In those final months of 2020, the outpouring of generosity from the community was unprecedented and meant McGaw YMCA could maintain its staff, take care of youth and families, and provide more health and wellness options. The McGaw YMCA community lived out their values in 2020 and 2021. The world was unpredictable but the concern for each other and everyone giving what they could was completely reliable. Volunteers brought food, clothing, personal care products, books and games to the Men’s Residence Department. Community members were sewing masks and children in our programs were sending notes of support in the mail. More members became donors than ever before as the Sustaining Membership was created as an option to transition McGaw Y membership fees to monthly donations. As people have reactivated their McGaw YMCA memberships, we are thankful for the many who have maintained their generous giving. Over 2,333 donors have made 6,459 gifts ranging from $5.00 to $1M to help us respond to the pandemic in the moment by taking care of staff, families, Resident Members and the community. Individual donations and COVID-19 relief funding are sustaining the long-term operational recovery efforts as we rebuild our membership base and program schedule.

Charitable gifts were

46% of our revenue in 2021.

SUSTAINING SUPPORT Donors and Members stretched their generosity during the height of the pandemic to sustain McGaw YMCA.

SUMMER LEARNING & CAMP IN EVANSTON SCHOOLS

As many individual donors did, three family foundations, in particular, went above and beyond with their gifts during the height of the pandemic response. The Lewis-Sebring Family Foundation gave $1M to Youth Development in addition to a multi-year commitment for their annual support as a Lead Supporter for McGaw YMCA. The Cless Family Foundation underwrites a part of the Summer Learning Program each year. In December 2020, they tripled their annual support with a $90,000 gift to ensure education resources were in place for our youth in summer programs and remote learning pods with McGaw Y staff. The Thomas F. and Susan P. Moran Family Foundation has been the Lead Donor for the Men’s Residence Renovation Project, launching in 2022, and made a specific investment of $100,000 for food, PPE, cleaning supplies and anything else the Men’s Residence Program needed to support our Resident Members.

Individual and Foundations made greater and more flexible gifts so McGaw YMCA could respond to Youth, Family and Resident needs. 9
