the past the present the promise

C A M P A I G N

In 1912 . . . Miss Louise S. McGehee defied the conventional wisdom of her day, founding a college-preparatory school for girls. Her vision was to provide young women opportunities in education and leadership previously unavailable to them. Today, 100 years later, Miss McGehee’s simple schoolhouse has grown into an educational village of five historic buildings encompassing almost an entire city block. But her mission remains unchanged: to prepare young women to take on the challenges of our global society. Our alumnae, students and faculty carry on Miss McGehee’s vision, excelling in the classroom, the board room, on stage, on the playing field and in service to their communities.

How girls’ values are shaped today will shape the world we live in tomorrow . . . they are community leaders, published authors, investment bankers, judges, engineers and Oscar winners. McGehee alumnae led the community recovery from Hurricane Katrina through Women of the Storm and Citizens for One Greater New Orleans. McGehee women are leaders throughout the nation, in every field of endeavor.

A century of enlightened leadership and dedication to an all-girl education comes from a concert of big ideas, generous gifts and endless commitment.

A second century begins . . . a vibrant, confident McGehee School hails its Centennial Year in 2012 because generations of alumnae, parents and friends have sustained this educational community. Their support has made possible the unsurpassed faculty, fine facilities and rich curriculum that our students enjoy today. In 2009, the Board of Trustees had the opportunity to purchase 2328 St. Charles Avenue, an historic home contiguous to our campus. This purchase served as a catalyst for a lengthy discussion with alumnae, parents, faculty and friends to define the resources that would ensure the success of McGehee’s mission in the years ahead. McGehee’s enrollment has grown dramatically since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, from 350 to over 516 students in 2010-11. Admissions has seen a groundswell of young professional families moving to our city, eager to join the McGehee community. The school is experiencing a huge population growth from Little Gate’s Early Childhood Program to Pre-K, to a fully enrolled Lower and Middle School and the largest High School population in the school’s history. McGehee curriculum offerings have grown significantly. Curriculum Mapping was completed in 2009, with additions of Everyday Math, Financial Literacy, Latin, Robotics, Anthropology and more. Our Music Department, always known as a distinguished choral program, has added instrumental music with violin, flute and piano instruction and a large Orff Ensemble. McGehee’s Visual Arts department has grown to a staff of five professional artists. The school’s guidance program now includes two full-time Counselors, four Learning Specialists, a Nurse and a College Counselor.

McGehee’s thriving enrollment and expanding curriculum make it necessary to expand the school’s facilities. We are becoming crowded and we need additional classrooms. The Centennial Campaign will seek resources for new classrooms; renovation of existing classrooms; redistribution of student populations to meet the needs of each age group; and an increase to McGehee’s Endowment Fund for the permanent future of the school. The Centennial Campaign reaffirms our dedication to Miss McGehee’s principles: girls are important and their future contributions as women in our society are crucial. Miss McGehee’s school may have grown beyond her recognition, but she would see her vision in the eager, expectant faces of the young women who enter our gates each day. Thank you for investing in girls and in Miss McGehee’s school.

E N D O W M E N T

McGehee’s teachers and students rival those of any secondary school in the country, but our Endowment is insufficient in comparison. To continue attracting and retaining the most talented students and faculty, McGehee must strive to keep tuition as low as possible, increase financial aid and offer competitive compensation for its faculty. McGehee’s future depends on its Endowment. The caliber of students and faculty, the quality of our programs, the condition of our buildings and grounds, are all directly linked to the health of the Endowment. Simply, the current Endowment is inadequate to meet our future needs. Our goal for the Centennial Campaign is $1,000,000 for the Endowment Fund.

ways of giving NAMED GIFTS: Many named funding opportunities exist (see inserts).

A leadership gift affords the opportunity to name a physical space for a loved one. RESTRICTED AND UNRESTRICTED GIFTS: Gifts may be designated

for a specific campaign goal or left unrestricted. Unrestricted gifts are particularly valuable since they give McGehee the flexibility to allocate funds where and when they are needed most. GIFTS OF CASH AND PLEDGES: Most gifts to McGehee are cash

contributions, for which donors receive tax benefits. Pledges may be paid over three to five years. SECURITIES: Many donors may realize substantial tax advantages by

transferring sizable gifts of appreciated stock to the school. Capital gains on the amount of appreciation are avoided, and the donor receives a tax deduction for the stock’s full market value. MATCHING GIFTS: More than one thousand companies will match or

multiply donations to McGehee by their employees, and donors are urged to request that their companies match gifts to the school. DEFERRED GIFTS AND BEQUESTS: Many donors find they can make

a more substantial gift to McGehee through deferred giving rather than through an outright contribution. Usually, deferred gifts are bequests or trust funds, which generate income to the school after the donor’s death. Donors receive full tax benefits for their contributions thereby enhancing their own financial situation while making a lasting contribution to McGehee.

SCIENCE & ENGINEERING CENTER

McGehee’s Science laboratories require a complete renovation to accommodate the latest technological advances and equipment. Our Science program has broadened to include Robotics, Anthropology and Archaeology in addition to Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Anatomy. We need comparable laboratory space to keep our curriculum on the leading edge. An Engineering program will be introduced to offer another essential part of young women’s education. Now is the time to provide new laboratory space that is compatible with advances in educational technology.

Middle School

C L A S S R O O M S

The Middle School has increased dramatically in size, growing from 99 students post-Katrina, to 139 students in 2010-2011, with projected population growth as our burgeoning Lower School moves up. During these vital four years in the life of a young girl, a close sense of community is particularly important to help girls navigate the challenges of pre-adolescence. The renovation of 2328 St. Charles Avenue will provide a Middle School building with seven classrooms and faculty workspace all geared to the specific developmental needs of our Middle School students.

Lower School

C L A S S R O O M S

Lower School has the largest enrollment at McGehee with 249 students. Additional classroom space is urgently needed. With the relocation of Little Gate’s facilities, additional classroom space will be repositioned to meet the needs of Lower School’s population. Six classrooms and faculty work space within the current Middle School will provide much needed instruction space for our Third and Fourth graders. These added classrooms in conjunction with the current Lower School building place our primary students at the heart of the facilities they use daily.

Little Gate

C L A S S R O O M S

McGehee’s Little Gate has grown from a small group of 15 students to 160 children. Our young pupils include alumnae and faculty children as well as children from across the community. The Little Gate program serves four different age groups and currently extends across the campus in four separate locations that were not originally designed to house an early childhood education program. Now is the opportunity to consolidate our youngest students into one developmentally appropriate campus location. 1538 Philip Street, adjacent to the Little Gate building, will be refurbished to accommodate their needs and in a unified area.
