The design presents a districtive approach to the inside/outside nature of the site’s program and its variety of users. Community serving retail and a large retail plaza with a monumental stair aims to erode the formidable campus fortress, and brings together students, faculty and neighbors to an historic campus entry.

A M O D E R N C A M P U S G AT E W AY F O R A C H A N G I N G C I T Y This long sloping site at the northwest corner of Howard University demanded a response that addresses both the urban design and architectural challenges of its decidedly urban setting.
The program of 880 new student beds and 40,000 square feet of community-serving retail, along with the desire to provide a clear and level pathway from adjacent neighborhoods to the
G EO RG I A heart of campus, combine with a variety of adjacent building heights and a desire to define campus zones differently than city zones, to drive a complex and contemporary response.
