I N T E R I O R S

hello. My name is Mckenzie Barco and I am a senior in the Interior Architecture and Design program at Florida State University. I am a creative soul with a strong dedication to helping those around me. I never feel as though interior design is work, but instead it is my passion. It is a privilege to wake up everyday and do what I love. I believe in the power of creativity and deem that every space should feel unique. I am convinced that design has the power to create a new sense of love and happiness within a space. I take pride in making each project I work on as sustainable and efficient as possible while still catering to the desires of my clients in order to make their dreams become a reality. Challenging myself in every design to delve deeper into the needs of my clients by genuinely getting to know them on an emotional level is an integral part of my design process. I believe beauty and function can exist hand in hand, therefore space planning is the area in which I find myself spending ample time perfecting. Small details matter greatly and that must be taken into consideration in order to be a successful designer. Extraordinary design has the ability to revolutionize our lives, and to make them more exquisite, valuable and cherished. This view fuels my passion and grants me the opportunity to develop my abilities each and every day.

01 MONTAGE COMMUNITY CENTER LOCATION: TALLAHASSEE, FL SIZE: 42,682 SF DURATION: 4 WEEKS PROGRAMS USED: REVIT, LUMION, PHOTOSHOP, INDESIGN The prospective design solution for this store remodel is to establish a mixed use community center that focuses on social and physical rejuvenation for the city of Tallahassee. Given the needs of the Tallahassee community to unite, the concept of this design is SYNERGY. Synergy is a mutually advantageous conjunction or compatibility of distinct elements. With this in mind, this design will provide interactive spaces such as fitness and work collaboration areas to create a sense of community for people of various backgrounds in different stages of their lives. This space will accommodate the needs of all age groups with diverse backgrounds by radiating a sense of belonging while supporting their independence as individuals. By designing this community center, opportunities for jobs, volunteering, and other leadership positions will arise. Overall, Montage Tallahassee will provide a sense of encouragement for the community and improve the quality of life for all.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT PROBLEM The vast majority of the Tallahassee demographic is comprised of college students, so therefore many businesses cater to this group within the community. According to Tallahassee’s government website, there are a few different centers that offer services to specific age groups, such as the Palmer Monroe Teen Center and the Tallahassee Senior Center. To conclude, the area surrounding the project site is lacking in a multi-purpose facility consisting of intergenerational spaces for the entire population including growing families, working professionals, as well as elderly citizens. The objective of this design is to re-purpose the former 42,682 SF ToysR-Us building that was vacated in 2017 as a result of the company’s bankruptcy. This closure resulted in job losses for many citizens of Tallahassee. As is the case with most remodels, both the building and site present challenges, including zoning restrictions and Florida Building Code requirements. The design must retain 80% of the existing perimeter walls, however, in order to retain structural integrity, all of the building’s joists and columns must stay in place. Along with these challenges comes the opportunity to establish a concept that will address universal design principles within a multi-use, intergenerational facility.

09 FSU PRIMARY HEALTH CLINIC LOCATION: TALLAHASSEE, FL SIZE: 20,928 SF DURATION: 8 WEEKS PROGRAMS USED: REVIT, LUMION, PHOTOSHOP, INDESIGN The design of this space will embody a patientcentered approach by creating an environment that will support patients’ physical and emotional needs. To ease circulation, clear sightlines and wayfinding through signage will be implemented throughout. To help patients and staff alike keep an optimistic mindset, positive distractions will be incorporated in the waiting room, as well as in exam rooms to promote healing and a feeling of well-being. To accommodate universal design principles and promote comfort for all patients no matter their size or physical ability, flexible furniture will be used in all areas of the clinic. To promote collaboration by the medical staff, the idea of an island which is implemented in the current space will be expanded on. In the new space providers will be given more space to work and learn alongside one another, along with better acoustics so they don’t have to worry about disrupting other staff while they are with patients. Exam rooms and procedure rooms will be larger to allow for more efficient teaching practices. Overall, the design solution of this space aims to enhance patient, family, and staff experience while also improving their well-being in a vibrant atmosphere. This space will not only be comfortable, but be enjoyable for the community as a whole.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

concept statement Holistic health care is a system of comprehensive or total patient care that considers the physical, emotional, social, economic, and spiritual needs of a person. With that being said, the concept for this design is HOLISTIC REJUVENATION, which will promote a form of healing in the design that embodies the user’s well-being as a whole including their body, mind, spirit and emotions. Comfortable and flexible furniture will make the users feel instantly at ease. Bright spaces and open circulation will promote optimism and provide an atmosphere that soothes tension. The design will give this medical center the ability to not only focus on healing, but also to implement proactive techniques instead of merely waiting for the problem to occur. The concept of holistic rejuvenation closely relates to the person-environment theory based on how the visitors will feel upon entering the space. Overall, the environment will be encouraging, comforting, and accepting of all that come through the doors, steering away from the negative stigmas affiliated with healthcare.

EXAM ROOM ELEVATION Each exam room has designated zones for comfortable and efficient medical examinations. The angle of the exam table allows for privacy from the hallway, while also providing views of their family member(s) and the physician, eliminating anxiety.

EXAM ROOM HALLWAY PERSPECTIVE The methods of wayfinding, along with the diffused recessed LED lights allow for patients and their caregivers to move efficiently through the space without stress or confusion. The use of cool colors creates a sense of ease for patients as they enter their assigned exam room and are waiting to be seen by a physcian or other care staff member.

COMMUNITY ROOM TEACHING KITCHEN

FSU Primary Health goal is to “help you achieve optimal health outcomes utilizing available community and medical resources. This space emphasizes on supporting the Tallahassee community as a whole who are impacted by the daily stress, struggles and chaos of modern life. Shown is the teaching kitchen portion of the community room which focuses on teaching the relationship between food and life. All of the furniture provided is flexible and easily cleaned to accommodate a variety of needs. The design utilizes vibrant colors accented by cool neutrals to provide a comfortable atmosphere for learning and socializing.

staff areas TO THE RIGHT: Telemedicine is emerging as a critical component of the healthcare community which the city of Tallahassee could greatly benefit from. Telemedicine holds the promise to significantly impact some of the most challenging problems of our current healthcare system: access to care, cost effective delivery, and distribution of limited providers. Telemedicine can change the current criteria of care and allow for improved access and improved health outcomes in cost effective ways. The composition of this space comfortable while providing an energetic atmosphere for care providers through strong patterns and biophilic elements. Since patients are seen virtually or through phone call, the design caters to the needs of the providers, rather than the patients who are not physically present.

TO THE LEFT: Break rooms are important just as exam and procedural rooms are important. It is crucial that the care team makes accurate and efficient decisions when it comes to the health of patients. In order to do this, the care staff must have a place to relax and converse with their colleagues. Break rooms are considered a recharge space which is very important for those in the medical field. Natural light is let in which stimulates the human body to have the energy to work adequately. STAFF BREAK ROOM elevation
