CAPSA Headquarters
inspiration image property of third party
Northern Utah
CAPSA is a non-profit domestic violence, sexual abuse, and rape recovery center. When it came time to design their new headquarters, it was important to do the appropriate research to accurately design a space suited for their needs. Research began by understanding CAPSA and what they did to help those in need. After understanding the people who are assisted in their facilities, it was important to research how abuse affected those people. Color psychology, furniture research, and inspiration were the final steps to make the design as
successful as possible. When laying out the floor plan for their new headquarters, it was important to take into consideration the location of each room. CAPSA encourages those visiting the office to feel comfortable so the Research and Support Group Center are located in the middle of the office. This allows those who come and go to feel part of the space. A closed off reception space and vestibules are used for added security and privacy. An onsite Child Care and Call Center help CAPSA continue to assist as many people as possible.

Research
1 Research CAPSA CAPSA is a non-profit domestic violence, sexual abuse, and rape recovery center. It provides support services for women, men, and children impacted by abuse. Their facility must be designed to not only provide a safe place for victims, but the interior environment must heal its occupants. CAPSA’s mission is to provide support for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and to reduce incidents of abuse through prevention education. An assessment of CAPSA’s needs for a functional office was done to determine what spaces would be necessary to assist those looking for help. With six inhouse therapists and four legal counsel professionals, those seeking help have access to various resources. A Support Group Center and Research Center will be used to help heal and educate victims. The Support Group Center will help those who have faced similar challenges connect with one another, while the Research Center provides a place for a fresh start. The search for a new job or a safe place to live can begin with the help of CAPSA. The 24-hour Call Center provides support and resources to those seeking help. Adjacent to the Call Center is the Childcare Center. It is a place for children to be looked after while their family members are seeking help. It is also a place for children to heal if they have been a victim or witness to abuse. Each space will be designed to provide education and instruction to those seeking help. Research Abuse Victims
Research Color Psychology
CAPSA’s new headquarters will treat and assist those who have been victims of abuse. Before designing the space, it is important to understand the mental state of these victims and the necessary elements the space will need to make it a place of healing and comfort.
After researching CAPSA and the affect abuse has on victims, research of what the space needed to include started with color psychology. The color that seemed to be best suited for CAPSA’s new headquarters was green. Green is the color of nature. It has been proven to be beneficial to the mind and body. It slows the metabolism and produces a calming effect. Green has an emotional correspondence with safety and has great healing powers. Accent colors such as blue, tan, and white have positive psychological affects and will be used within the space. These psychological aspects will play an important role in healing those who visit CAPSA’s new headquarters.
An article published by the US National Library of Medicine, discussed the cognitive changes and interpersonal relationships of women who have suffered from domestic abuse. The results of this study determined that there were significant differences between women who have been abused and those who have not. Women who suffered from domestic violence had higher results in depression and destruction dimensions, while women who had not experienced abuse had higher results in reproduction and incorporation. Women victims of abuse said they would describe themselves as more angry, lonely, sad, and less sociable. These negative emotions can become a risk for mental health disorders and the revictimization of women who have suffered from domestic violence. This assessment of the mental and emotional profile of abuse victims will play an important role in designing a space that is an ideal place to heal and receive the necessary help.

Research Inspiration
Research Furniture
Research Results
Research of inspiration came after understanding the needs of CAPSA and color psychology. The space needs to feel open and light. Various shades of green and neutrals will be used to create a comfortable office while natural textures and the occasional pattern will keep the space feeling modern.
After researching the needs for CAPSA, color psychology, and inspiration, furniture research was the last step before designing the space. Ergonomic chairs and adjustable sit-to-stand desks will be used in every office as well as the Call Center to ensure a productive environment for employees and volunteers. The office not only needs to heal those who need help, but it needs to be a comfortable place for those who work there. Comfortable furniture will also be used throughout waiting areas and lounge spaces. Not only will ergonomics play an important role in furniture selection, but durability of finishes and fabrics will also be taken into consideration.
After extensive research on the needs of CAPSA for their new headquarters, it was determined that the space needed to be as functional as possible. Functionality as well as safety and privacy were the most important components of the design. After laying out a floor plan that accomplished those three things, it was important to start implementing the remaining research within the design. A well-designed space is just as important as a functional space to ensure proper healing when using and spending time in the office. Not only was it necessary to design for those CAPSA is assisting, but a space designed for volunteers and employees will ensure maximum efficiency and productivity.

Migration
Standout: When we think of migration, we think of birds and their constant movement. This constant movement is vital for a bird’s survival. Seasonal migration is behavioral and is necessary for birds to find enough resources such as food and nesting locations. They navigate using the sun and earth’s magnetic field. Birds experience wayfinding similar to humans in interiors. This collection is inspired by the colors, feathers, and movement of birds. Yellows and blues are used to depict the bright feathers in contrast with the sky. Organic shapes and textures
throughout the ballroom and prefunction areas creates constant movement or migration through the two spaces. Migration is a custom hospitality carpet design for the Durkan Discover Competition. The ballroom and pre-function spaces were to be considered separate but cohesive when designing the flooring. Each design works together to create a continuous design as users pass through each space. Migration placed 5th in the 2017 Durkan Discover Competition.

Tri House

Vancouver, British Columbia
Inspired by the repetitive and rigid structure of snowflakes, The Tri House is a 1,000 square foot residence located in the mountains of Vancouver, British Columbia. Three corrugated metal columns and reflective glass makes this geometric modern residence a standout against broad mountains and dense trees. Standing at over 60 feet tall, Tri House mimics its surroundings of expansive pine trees and becomes
an element of nature. The exterior of Tri House uses various textures and deep rich colors inspired by the surrounding forest. Spacious walls are the perfect canvas for large-scale art and thoughtful space planning ensured every inch of the residence was used wisely. The main floor of the house contains the public spaces such as the kitchen, dining room, and living room, while the second floor has the bedroom and bathroom.
