In most cases, this is not true; the majority of students do not gain the whole 15 pounds, and if they do, it is usually not all in their first year. Students are expected to gain weight; however, it is spread out gradually. This information may sound good at first, but according to kidshealth. org, which, contrary to the name, offers health advice to parents about all developmental groups, “doctors are concerned that students who gradually put on pounds are establishing delicious cake. a pattern of weight gain These unhealthy ways of that could spell trouble if it eating can easily become a continues.” habit, but there is still hope. week long break on the beach or relaxing, one group of students opted for an alternative spring break service global outreach project to Jamaica. During their ten-day stay there, thirteen students and three faculty traveled to Kingston and Morant Bay, Jamaica to provide service to communities deep in crippling poverty. The alternative spring break option started with Dr. Lyn Huxford in 1994 and continues strong through 2011. When asked about why she continues to go, Huxford said, “Each year when I decide whether or not to go to Jamaica I think about the families whose houses we have built over the years and what a difference we have been able to make in their lives. Also, I think about the many McKendree students since we began the trip in 1994 who have given up the traditional spring break scene to instead

immerse themselves in Jamaican culture and give their time and effort to helping others. Both thoughts make the experience irresistible.”
The students and faculty build homes for families, provide labor and supplies to keep rural schools open and functional, and support homeless shelters and hospitals. The homes, however, are not the 2,400 square-foot homes we think of in the United States. A modest Jamaican home is normally a 200-250 square-foot single room. The students partner with the

Kinectimals, a virtual pet game that uses the Kinect’s motion sensors to allow the player to interact with animals, Dance Central, a dancing game produced by the developers of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor, a futuristic mecha combat game which pitches the United states against the Chinese. These games seek to use the Kinect as the primary means of controlling the game, eschewing the use of a controller. Recently, Microsoft has released the development kit for the Kinect for free for noncommercial uses. This has lead to a slew of inventive and novel uses for the Kinect from the developers and hackers who went to work writing programs for the motion controller. Examples include movement controlled instruments, DJ tools, synthesizers, aiding the possibilities for making music in new and interesting ways. As wonderful as the Kinect sounds, though, there are some issues with it that can make the accessory less appealing. For instance, the motion-tracking camera itself costs $149.99, which is 75% of the cost of a brand new entry level Xbox.

way of bringing video gaming to the masses. The Kinect is a motion sensor controller for the Xbox 360. It is essentially an array of webcams, infrared projectors, and microphones, which provide 3D motion capture, as well as facial and voice recognition. This opens up a plethora of different methods of gameplay, much like Sony’s EyeToy in 2003, (which was a very similar, but less advanced version of the Kinect). large service project is a major component to the class, all students will study poverty cross-culturally and do at least fifteen hours of service here in our own community with such organizations as St. Patrick’s Center, which feeds homeless people in St. Louis; the Christian Activity Center in East St. Louis, which works with at-risk youth after school; and Second Chance Shelter in East St. Louis, which provides emergency shelter for women and children who are victims of abuse. Working from the motto, “Think Globally, Act Locally,” 40 hours of service in Jamaica are mirrored with 15 hours domestically. To fund the trip, students pay for themselves and then the University matches the students’ funds to pay for the rest of the lodging and airfare. The service projects, however, come with the help of their fundraising initiatives and donations like their pizza fundraiser, silent auction, and letter-writing campaigns.

Passwords Why “Password” just doesn’t cut it, anymore. By Kevin Schaefer Associate Editor What’s your password? No! Don’t answer that; chances are, with a little time and maybe the use of some software, your passwords could be cracked. So, should you say “good-bye” to online banking, Facebook, or email? Of course not! It’s not necessary to give up using passwords, as long as you practice some safe habits when creating a password. So, what denotes a strong password, and which passwords should you stay away from? The two most important words to remember: length and complexity. According to Microsoft, it’s strongly recommended that you use a password of at least 14 characters or more. But why does having a longer password make it more difficult to crack? Do the math. With a five character password, using only lower case letters, the total number of possible passwords is 26^5 (that’s: 26 to the power of 5, or approximately 12 million possible passwords). Even though that sounds like a lot, consider this: today’s computers are capable of trying every one of those combinations in only a few minutes. OH NO! Let’s remember, that was only a 5 character password. If you followed Microsoft’s recommendations and used a 14 character password, the total number of possible passwords jumps to 26^14 (or around 64,000 trillion possible passwords)! It would take more than just a few hours for even a fast computer to try every possible password. In fact, if a computer were able to try one million passwords
per second, it could take as long as about two million years to correctly find the password. However, this is only taking into account passwords made up of only lowercase letters. Once you start using uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as digits and symbols, the number of passwords sky-rockets (with 64^14, or roughly 19 billion-trillion combinations; or almost 300 thousand times more than if only lowercase letters are
or sequences such as “1111111”, “1234567”, “aaaaaaa”, or “abcdefg”. These types of passwords are also relatively easy to guess. Needless to say, any kind of personal information should not be used for a password, either. This includes your name, birthday, driver’s license number, passport number, or any other kind of personal information. If that wasn’t enough, one of the last things to remember is not to write your password down. After all, why would somebody ever want to wait for a computer to crack your password, when they could just look at that Post-It note on the side of your computer screen? So, hopefully you are asking yourself: “What am I supposed to do? How will I ever create a hard-to-crack password that is also easy to remember?” There are a few tricks. The first trick is to think of a sentence, such as “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.” Now, it’s pretty easy to remember this sentence, right? The next step is to take the first letter of each word. So, if we did this, we would get: “Tqbfjotld.” I don’t know about you, but this looks kind of difficult to guess. Don’t stop there; maybe think of two sentences so you end up with a longer password. “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. Then the fox stole the dog’s two bones.” This might become: “Tqbfjotld. Ttfstd2b.” For a little more protection, change a couple of lowercase letters to uppercase, and vice-versa.
The best passwords are long and made up of random uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as symbols and numbers used). If a computer could try one million passwords per second, it would take around 600 billion years to guess every combination. Of course, if you were to use “PasswordsAreGreat” as your password, you would be in for a surprise. While it’s true that there are 17 characters in this password, they are really just three dictionary words. You should never use dictionary words as passwords. Why? Because there aren’t that many dictionary words, especially compared to the huge number of passwords that are possible when using random letters, digits, and symbols. These types of passwords are much more simple to guess. You also shouldn’t use repeated characters

And the icing on the cake: add a few symbols, like an exclamation mark, question mark, percent sign, or some other symbol. After all: the more complex and long your password, the better. So the next time you sign up for an email account, open up an online banking account, or reset your McKendree password, think about what that password is protecting. If you don’t, you just might learn what the phrase “All your base are belong to us” means.
By Kyle Hintz Staff Writer February 16 was Condom Awareness Day. In case you didn’t know there are these things called condoms, they’re pretty good at keeping bumps off your privates and babies from growing in your belly. And that’s what Condom Awareness Day is all about: making you aware that you can have sex without the side effects of babies and diseases. Pretty cool, right? Hopefully, you know that already. What you
may not know is this: you can get free condoms from Nurse Mary Francis Daylor anytime you need them. That leaves you no excuse to not use them. As Junior Brad Gebben says, “having a baby in college is not an easy thing to do.” So practice safe sex, folks. And even if you didn’t attend Condom Awareness Day, don’t fret, because you can make every day Condom Awareness Day! If you’d like any more information, please contact Dr. Brenda Boudreau.

This does not mean that students should deny themselves something if they are craving it, but it also is not good to indulge either. Dr. Onstott, from the School of Nursing and Health Professions department here on campus, says healthy eating is about moderation. “Don’t tell yourself you can’t have something.” It is all about having the right mindset of eating more nutritious foods that generally contain a lower amount of calories. “Having something sweet once daily is okay.” However, it should be sensible. Along with moderation, serving sizes are important. Students should “know what a serving size is,” says Dr. Onstott. Dr. Onstott gave the example of how eating a whole can of fruit or a whole box of macaroni is more than one serving. Sudoku:

According to youngwomenshealth.org, students should “take smaller portions to start and go back for more if [they] are still hungry.” There are also ways vegetarians can eat nutritiously. For most meals, Ames offers vegetarian entrees, such as wok bar, pasta, pizza, and other vegan options. Integrating protein-rich ingredients within these offered meals will give students the protein their bodies need to maintain their muscles. Suggested ingredients consist of beans, eggs, and peanut butter. Annie Bierman, senior, is one student at McKendree that makes up the vegan population. While Bierman currently lives in the McKendree Village and does not eat Ames daily, she is still mindful of what she eats. “I have to think Sudoku - Answers to February 11, 2011 Issue:

every morning about what I’m going to eat for the day.” Whenever Bierman does get the opportunity to eat in Ames, she goes directly for a nice salad. She gets “lots of vegetables with Italian dressing” and definitely nothing with grease because it grosses her out. In some cases, students have class whenever meals are being served and do not have the opportunity to eat. However, food is fuel for the brain, so skipping a meal is never the option! Dr. Onstott is against skipping meals, especially breakfast. “It really messes with one’s metabolism.” She suggests keeping healthy snacks on hand, such as fruit, granola bars, or yogurt. These vitamin packed foods are sure to keep students tuned in to the class and help them concentrate. Another valuable thing to keep on hand is water. Youngwomenshealth.org says proper hydration is most important for keeping healthy skin and organs. Students should keep spare water bottles or containers in their backpacks or gym bags. People should drink water even if they are not thirsty. Waiting until they are thirsty means their bodies are lacking internal fluids and are already partially dehydrated. Staying hydrated also keeps the metabolism up. Late night snacking is a tendency for most students, especially if they are up late studying. Contrary to what most people think, eating late at night is not necessarily a bad thing. “That is a myth,” says Dr. Onstott. “Calories are calories. Your body is not going to digest them differently.”
According to youngwomenshealth. org, keeping the room stocked with healthy snacks to cure those hunger pains is encouraged. Snacks such as canned fruit, nuts, oatmeal, tuna fish, and popcorn are healthy and delicious foods students can eat to keep their appetite at bay. Refrigerated items can consist of baby carrots, yogurt, string cheese, and low-fat milk. Along with healthy eating habits, regular exercise is a great way to stay fit. Dr. Onstott points out that people cannot just change their ways of eating, they need a “change in activities, too.” Since McKendree is a relatively small campus, walking or biking to class is promoted. Throughout the year and especially during the cold season, intramural sports are suggested. This is a great way for students to continue to be active throughout the off season of particular sports. Not to mention, a great way to meet new people. Many students take advantage of McKendree’s Fitness Center. This is a convenient way to exercise indoors, where treadmills, bicycles, and elliptical machines are arranged for students’ use. For students who have never been to the Fitness Center, it is supported that you go try it out. Bring a friend! Incorporating these small changes throughout the day can help students become healthier in the long run. Some students may have the outlook of staying healthy and fit as being a challenge, but it does not have to be. Simple things such as staying hydrated, implementing portion control, and staying active are easy ways to head towards a healthier lifestyle.

Blue Valentine
Tell me how I should be. Just tell me. I'll do it. 4 Paws By Kyle Hintz Staff Writer Blue Valentine, directed by Derek Cianfrance and starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, is a juxtaposition of the past and present in the marriage of Dean (Gosling) and Cindy (Williams). Aside from The Social Network, this is the best film of the year. It calls to mind the raw and powerful films of John Cassavetes with frequent use of claustrophobic camera work putting us right in the thick of things along with an astonishingly honest script which captures the addled state wherein we all live. From this state we watch the beginning and the end of their relationship. There is no specific incident to take the blame for the disintegration of their love. If there were then the film would be pointless. The movie asks us questions instead of providing simplistic answers to irrelevant ones. What happened to their love? Where did it go? These are questions only the viewer can ask and only the viewer can answer. All I can tell you is that Michelle Williams’ Academy Nomination is
well deserved and Ryan Gosling’s lack of one is a crime. They are the two most honest, intense, grabbing, ripping, gripping performances this year, or any other. See it for them if nothing else. So if you’re interested in experiencing something

Gnomeo and Juliet I like it better as a tragedy By Kyle Hintz Staff Writer Why did I see this movie? I don’t know. This movie is graffiti on the soul of Shakespeare. Did I spoil the ending for you already? If I didn’t, now I’m going to. Gnomeo and Juliet don’t die at the end, but then you should’ve guessed that by the vapidity of the title. As you can imagine, I didn’t walk into the theater expecting much. Yet, I was still underwhelmed. The Dilemma The Dilemma is the latest comedy from director Ron Howard, starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James. Basically, the premise is Kevin James and Vince Vaughn are best friends and James’ wife, played by Winona Ryder, is having an affair with Channing Tatum. Vaughn discovers this and struggles with how to tell James while hilarity ensues. Or does it? No, it doesn’t. The real dilemma is this: an unfunny movie pretending to be funny. I’ll admit that I didn’t particularly want to see this, but I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt. Then the movie started. As much as I like Vince Vaughn, he couldn’t redeem any of it. He struggles way too much with something that he shouldn’t be that conflicted about, and is given little reason to be so, while the movie plays this up for laughs. It then tries to turn on itself toward the end, revealing that Vaughn’s character had a gambling addiction as if the mere mention of an “issue” will suddenly make the audience take this bullshit seriously.

Bloodroot By Hannah Johnson Contributing Writer There are so many things that I could say about this book. Bloodroot takes place in the Appalachians, Bloodroot Mountain to be exact. The dialect in the book makes you feel like you are sitting on a porch at the top of this beautiful mountain. With the character’s personalities and voices, one can become quickly dazzled by this rural area. I thought the book was extremely interesting and dark. When I first looked at the cover with its pretty colors and lonely girl lying in a field, I thought that this book was going to be sweet and lovely (in other words, boring). The book is written from the point of view of many people, not just the main character, Myra Lamb. It takes you from the beginning when she was little and wild living on the mountain with her grandparents. She would play with the neighbor boys, who were completely in love with the
idea of her. Like their horse, she was untamable, so it was better to love her from
town below the mountain, and he wants to have a wife like most men want in those days -pregnant and barefoot in the kitchen. If he could, he would chain her to the house. But it becomes harder for him to control Myra’s wild and spontaneous ways. Q
I have been with my boyfriend for a over a year and it is amazing. He is more than a boyfriend. He is one of my best friends. We may argue sometimes about really small things, but mostly that’s it. Last semester we got in a larger fight. After the fight, he didn’t cheat, or anything too bad, but he did betray my trust a lot. I have never worried before about trusting him, but even though I said I would forget it and he apologized, I am having trouble not remembering it. It is really bothering me. I don’t know how to get over it and move on. Guy Speak: When someone we love betrays us, it hurts us deeper than normal. This isn’t something you’re going to be able to just forget about and move on from. You may have already spoken to him about it, but that doesn’t meant that you should just forget it ever happened. I suggest that you have another talk with him about it, because it is still bothering you. The only way to get past these things is by communicating to each other, because otherwise he will not know that anything is wrong. Perhaps if you found out what caused him to betray your trust, you might understand better and be able to really move on. I am just guessing here, but I think you are having trouble with this because you don’t understand why he did it. I could be wrong. Trust is one of the most important aspects of a relationship, just keep that in mind in case you find it to be unfixable.
Girl Talk: It’s really hard to give advice without knowing the specifics of the situation. I will assume that he did some things that are not normal for him. You may never forget the situation but you must forgive. Accepting him back as your boyfriend put all in the past and your task is to focus on your future. If you sincerely forgive his past acts, then it should not constantly be on your mind. It is not fair to you and neither to him if you constantly keep reliving moments from the past. It sounds as though he has more pros than cons, therefore he is worth keeping. You have the greatest foundation a relationship can have and that’s a friendship. Not all couples can say that they are friends and in your case best friends. I suggest you voice to him the things that are bothering you and how important it is that you both have clarification on the matter. To assure that you will not forget anything you should write it down. This should be the last and final conversation about this subject. Hopefully you will be able to get over it and move on. With love and a strong friendship you can get through anything. My boyfriend is thinking about joining the Army. I’m not going to lie: I think the army is a great thing to join and I think he is up to the challenge. The problem is that I don’t want to find out one day that he was killed. I want to be supportive, but I’m scared to death that I’m going to lose him. What should I do? Guy Speak: First thing, it’s great that you want to be supportive! Second thing, just be honest with him. If this is something that he really wants to do and has a good reason for doing it, then you can’t do much to stop him. I know you probably understand this, but it’s his life and he can do what he wants with it. I know its easier said than done, but try to not worry yourself sick. They train soldiers well, and if he’s smart, he’ll be safe. If you haven’t already, sit down and have a nice long talk with him about your feelings. Tell him that you’ll be here when he gets back, and make sure he knows that you care about him. On a different note, I noticed that you said he was “thinking” about it. You could always offer to help him find an alternative to joining the army. This depends on his reasons for joining though.
Q
Girl Talk: In the past, I shared that same view. Our family doesn’t have a military background, so I could not see things from a soldier’s perspective. Yes, he could get killed, but that’s a risk he is obviously willing to take. He can also get hit by a car crossing the street and die. What I’m trying to convey to you is that he is not looking on the negative side but the positive aspect of it. First of all it’s an honor to serve your country. There are a lot of benefits and opportunities that come with serving in the Army. I suggest you look more into American History and pay close attention to all of the greats who died in order for us to enjoy the freedoms we enjoy today. Go to the recruiter’s office with him, therefore you can ask questions as well. I believe once you understand the process of serving, I am certain you will have a change of heart.

Page 8 WOLFF’S FREE THROWS PUSH NO. 20 BEARCATS PAST PARK, 69-68; BEARCATS CLAIM FOURTH STRAIGHT AMC REGULARSEASON TITLE AND TOP SEED IN AMC TOURNAMENT
McKENDREE BASEBALL TEAM DROPS 2-0 NAILBITER AT CAMPBELLSVILLE
Kyle Moll had the Bearcats’ lone extra-base hit against Campbellsville The McKendree University baseball team closed out a three-game weekend series at Campbellsville University with a 2-0 loss to the host Tigers Sunday in Kentucky.
Eric Hobbie scored 13 of his team-high 17 points in the first half at Park A pair of free throws by senior guard Andy Wolff with 11.9 seconds remaining lifted the McKendree University men’s basketball team to a 69-68 victory at Park University in the 2010-11 regular-season finale for both squads. McKendree then had to survive a potential game-tying free throw attempt by Park’s Derrick Howard with 2.7 seconds left, but the shot was off the mark, and Wolff tracked down the rebound in the corner to run out the clock and seal the Bearcats’ seventh consecutive win. McKendree, the No. 20-ranked team in NAIA Division I, improves to 18-11 overall. The Bearcats finished their final season in the American Midwest Conference with a 12-2 league record, and earned their fourth consecutive AMC regular-season championship. McKendree tied with Columbia College in the final AMC standings, but the Bearcats earned the top seed in next week’s AMC Tournament based on their road record in conference games. McKendree was 7-0 on the road in AMC play while Columbia was 6-1 in away contests. Pairings for the AMC Tournament will be officially released on Sunday, but McKendree is likely to face Missouri Baptist University in a tournament quarterfinal game Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Melvin Price Convocation Center. Senior forward Eric Hobbie (Vandalia, Ill./Vandalia) scored 13 of his game-high 17 points in the first half to lead McKendree. Hobbie also
grabbed seven rebounds and blocked three shots in the victory. Sophomore forward David Ruckman (Freeburg, Ill./Freeburg) came off the bench to add 14 points and six rebounds, while junior forward Sean Rakers (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) and junior guard Karrington Pettiford (Florissant, Mo./Christian Brothers) each netted 11 pints for the Bearcats. Wolff chipped in with six points, six assists, three steals and a gamehigh nine rebounds for McKendree, which held a 36-21 edge on the boards against the Pirates. Park (18-8, 10-4 AMC) trailed McKendree 38-30 at the half, but used a 10-2 run to tie the contest at 40-40 in the first three minutes of the second half. From there, the biggest lead for either team was three points. The Bearcats led by three on three different occasions down the stretch, the last coming at 67-64 on a dunk by Rakers with 2:32 remaining. In all, there were 11 ties and 14 lead changes in the second half. After Rakers’ dunk, Howard scored on a lay-up to bring Park within 67-66. McKendree then turned the ball over on consecutive possessions, and the Pirates’ Kyle Rausch was fouled in the lane with 37 seconds on the clock. Rausch made both free throws to give Park a 68-67 advantage. On its next possession, Wolff drove into the lane and was fouled from behind by Howard with 11.9 seconds to go. After a McKendree timeout, Wolff – a 52 percent free throw shooter on the season –
drained both attempts to push the Bearcats back out in front by one. Park called its last timeout to set up a final play with 7.2 seconds on the clock. Howard took the inbounds and drove down the left side of the lane and was fouled by Hobbie with 2.7 seconds left. Howard stepped to the line and missed the front end of a bonus, and the rebound bounded to the corner. Wolff grabbed the rebound and heaved the ball to midcourt to run out the clock and give the Bearcats the victory. The free throw attempt by Howard was the Pirates’ only miss of the contest from the line. Park made 13of-14 foul shots against the Bearcats. McKendree shot better than 55 percent from the field in the first half to grab a 38-30 lead at the intermission. A three-pointer from sophomore guard John Steppe (Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony) capped an 8-2 run that gave the Bearcats a 10-7 advantage with just under 17 minutes left in the period. McKendree never trailed for the remainder of the half. Reco Anderson led Park with 15 points and four assists. Rausch and Goldeng Deng each added 12 points, while Travis Fairley connected for 10 points in the effort. Rausch also pulled down a team-leading five rebounds for the Pirates, who will be the No. 3 seed in the AMC Tournament. McKendree has now won five of its last six meetings with Park, and the Bearcats stretched their advantage in the all-time series to 32-13.

Campbellsville scored a run in the bottom of the first inning and added an insurance run in the eighth inning to hold on for the win. The Bearcats slip to 3-10 on the season and will open the home portion of its schedule next weekend at Hypes Field. McKendree will host Saint Ambrose University in consecutive doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at Hypes Field. Both twinbills are scheduled to start at noon. After the Bearcats were retired in order in the top of the first inning, Campbellsville grabbed a 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI single by
Michael McBride, who was also the starting pitcher in the contest for the Tigers. That score stood until the eighth inning, when Campbellsville pushed across another run on a double play with the bases loaded. McBride allowed just two hits to McKendree over the first five innings. Jacob Cook, who earned the save for the Tigers, gave up the other two hits collected by the Bearcats. Senior outfielder Dan Corwin (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet) had two of the four hits for McKendree. Senior catcher Kyle Moll (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) added a double, while freshman outfielder Tony Kossina (Millstadt, Ill./Belleville West) had an eighth-inning single.
