The Jeweled Garden by

Matthew Campbell Laurenza

Designed with Swarovski Genuine Gemstones ™

Jeweled Craftsmanship A few years ago, acclaimed jewelry designer Matthew Campbell Laurenza and Atelier Swarovski engaged to partner on an art project highlighting the natural

beauty of Swarovski’s genuine gemstones. The project—entitled Jeweled Garden—brings to life unique sculptures inspired by flora and fauna that showcase the unrivalled craftsmanship of both Laurenza and Swarovski.

This collection contains fifteen hyper-real sculptures of flora and fauna, accompanied by fifteen opulent pieces of wearable sculpture. Together they

build an astonishing invocation of the human experience, represented by the superb intricacy of nature, made material through objects of desire. Objects of desire and dedication: these flora and fauna have each been realized over several

hundred hours of meticulous labor, while the project as a whole, including the fifteen pieces of wearable sculpture, took over three years to produce.

Matthew’s vision for the project began as many feats do: private, unbridled ideas forming, evolving and coalescing. While the project may appear to be

a departure from Laurenza’s usual work, moving away from jewelry into the

world of sculpture, it is actually a return of sorts. Laurenza studied sculpture before moving into jewelry design and has always incorporated principles from

the discipline within his jewelry collections. It was natural that Jeweled Garden would fuse techniques from both disciplines, and being well acquainted with

both proved invaluable when construction began in earnest as challenges with such a complex and formidable project would lead to stunningly engineered sculptures with interlocking and articulating components.

Drawing from two design disciplines also enabled Laurenza to harmonize

aesthetic principles which he engaged with a delicate clarity. The flora and

fauna are all double layered, consisting of a silver skeleton which has been ornamented with Swarovski’s precious and semi-precious stones. The

arrangement of these stones builds the exterior corpus and extremities of the animals, the blossoms and pedicels of the flowers, as well as the surface of the fungi. Laurenza meticulously chose Swarovski gemstones to ensure that each

one would illuminate, precisely, the kaleidoscopic nature of his creations,

making the aesthetic process a virtual exercise in color–a poetics of light and form resembling a painter’s brushwork.

The relationship between Laurenza and Swarovski was well established before this project began; their gemstones feature prominently in Laurenza’s jewelry collections. When Laurenza was approached by the crystal house as

a partner on this project, it was to take their relationship into new territory. Swarovski encouraged Laurenza to develop the project further, suggesting the sculptures be accompanied by a collection of fine jewelry which would extend

the sculptures’ beauty, power and mythological resonance into every-day life. The fifteen jewelry pieces, like the sculptures, are all adorned with precious

and semi-precious gems. They are handmade, using traditional jewelry craftsmanship, and each stone was set one-by-one to jigsaw elegantly with

the others. The results are breathtaking; they will radiate color and light for a lifetime and through the ages and stand as a testament to Laurenza’s diligence and commitment to exquisite beauty.

Matthew Campbell Laurenza Infused with inspiration from countries worldwide and his background in sculpture, jewelry and architecture, American designer Matthew Campbell Laurenza blends experiences and cultures to produce unique and distinctive jewelry designs.

Born in Colorado, Matthew lived in New Mexico and Texas as a child before moving to Kentucky where he finished high school. He began his studies at Savannah College of Art and Design pursuing a degree in architecture and interior

design. Realizing that architecture had creative limits, Matthew transferred to Bellarmine College and adjusted his focus to pursue a degree in Fine Arts with a speciality in sculpture. Although no longer pursuing architecture, he applied

the concepts of design and construction to his sculpture projects and began

to construct breathtaking jewelry designs. “Every piece of jewelry is art. The carving of the wax, the placement of stones, the use of color and texture, the

profile—all of these elements combine to create a miniature sculpture to be worn and become a part of someone’s daily life.”

As a part-time expat for more than a decade, Matthew splits his time between

Asia, the United States and the multitude of countries he visits. His non-stop travel schedule means that he is frequently in as many as five or six countries

within a single month. As Matthew travels, he makes time to see the sights, experience the local culture, and visit the museums—all of which serve as a starting point for his designs. The old adage that ‘history repeats itself’ draws

Matthew to historical design periods. The art deco, renaissance, modernism,

arts and crafts and other movements hold special appeal. “Artists are a product of their environment. We are sensitive to what has come before us, and acutely attuned to what is happening around us. My travels have informed and shaped

everything I do and in return, I bring a new point of view and an invigorated energy to the design process.” Matthew uses these strong influences and blends them with modern and refreshing nuances to develop opulent designs.

Matthew Campbell Laurenza’s woman’s collection launched at Bergdorf

Goodman in 2007 and was introduced shortly thereafter at Neiman Marcus,

Harrods, Lane Crawford in Hong Kong, and other high-end luxury retailers. Today, the brand is in 36 markets and sold through more than 100 retailers

worldwide including cosmopolitan centers such as London, Hong Kong, Dubai, New York, Los Angeles, Singapore, Paris, Tokyo, and Moscow.

The Garden as Inspiration As we enter a garden, each of our senses is activated: a whirring dragonfly; the warmth of sunshine; a collage of reds, pinks, blues, purples and greens; a

wafting fragrance of blooms, soil, and grass; and an almost palpable sweetness. As Matthew conceptualized The Jeweled Garden, he thought of how the five senses play a crucial, inseparable role in our experiences.

Many 17th Century artists produced heavily detailed works–visually rich and

highly symbolic–exploring the power of the senses. In The Jeweled Garden,

Matthew pays homage to Jan Brueghel the Elder and Peter Paul Ruben’s cycle of paintings, The Five Senses. Each of the five works (created in partnership by

the Franco-Flemish masters between 1617 and 1620) used elaborate symbolism to depict a different sense. They relied heavily upon the concept and tradition of allegory, orchestrating parallels between the natural world and the nature of

our humanity, our soul and biological constitution. Artists have always held a mirror up to the world, solidifying our place and purpose, or making us question

them but The Five Senses, created in the pre-dawn of the Enlightenment, ask

us to consider how our biology shapes who we are, what we are, and how we interact with nature. With The Jeweled Garden Laurenza does too.

While The Jeweled Garden maintains the opulence and conceptual density of

The Five Senses, the fifteen extravagant sculptures which form the backbone of this project are not merely reflections of nature. Each sculpture represents an evolution of nature, of magnified life forms that do not, and cannot inhabit the same space as we. All of our senses are activated through this direct

confrontation between what we see and what we know, between the familiarity of the forms and the surprise of their appearance.

Laurenza’s creations must inhabit their own space. They are too beautiful, too

powerful, too magnificent and too much a part of that otherworldly space—a space that, but for Laurenza’s artistry, we would not be destined to enter.

Legend of The Jeweled Garden As Laurenza’s flora and fauna evolved, their sheer size meant that a new place must be found to contain their magnitude. For thousands of years they had existed on Earth — hardly noticed as humanity busied itself with other concerns.

But whispers of their changes began to imbibe mythology and folklore. Winding its way through each story, each superstition, and each rumor of their existence

was a common message — these new beings were unlike any other. Each served a distinct role and exhibited a unique personality; and they all embodied a challenge to the senses.

As time passed, their bodies hardened into metallic shells — where there had

once been camouflaging color, myriad hues of gemstones replaced fragile

outer layers. Their biological receptors became heightened until even the most succulent of gardens and forests could not sustain them. Humanity became

acutely aware of them. Suddenly they were targets of experiments and desperate

fascination. The Earth was no longer safe. A new home had to be found for them, somewhere they could evolve in peace.

Humanity’s elders came from all corners of the globe to offer help. They saw

the magnificent potential of these creatures. They respected them and wanted to protect them. They combined all their power and knowledge until a sanctuary

was found. And so it was that, in the early hours before another dawn, the flora

and fauna headed toward their new home, climbing into space along tendrils of

light that dropped down to Earth like ropes from a high window. As the moon fell beneath the horizon and the sun rose up, the creatures left our atmosphere forever and their lives began anew… in The Jeweled Garden.

Mushroom The EntrĂŠe They spread their caps wide, opening every pore to the dew of their new home. It

tastes like magic, a supernatural cacophony garnished with primordial wisdom.

They inhale deeply, imbibing the power of this celestial whirlwind, taking it all in, then bursting forth in cherry, green, orange, violet and blue.

The others are desperate to know which mushroom is which, to see how their powers could be harnessed, cultivated, guzzled and absorbed. Because one of

them cures, one of them kills, one opens the mind to psychedelic narration, another opens taste buds to lush degustation. And the last? They can be everything at once: the wild card.

The mushrooms will not reveal themselves. After millennia of quiet servitude,

they are finally tasting the true expanse of their own power. It is black and gold, unbridled, rapacious. They will not be consumed. They will not go back to the

way things were. For here they are altered completely, their consciousness expanding, mushrooming into a labyrinth of succulent profundity.

Dogwood The Consul She is their faithful magistrate, dense but fine-grained, elected by the others to keep her eyes on justice, relied upon for her flawless composure and tendrils of equity. She represents them all — arms fanning out in a blueprint of valor,

coated in leaves of tranquil endurance, crowned with blooms that sing songs of

freedom, peace and virtuosity. The notes are creamy, the keys supple, with a dollop of champagne fizzing at the bridge.

She mostly presides over joy and frivolity, consul of the colony, captain of their odyssey. But occasionally she must step between them, sauntering along their high-wire battle-lines, feuds redefined by her tip-toeing wisdom, unwound by the verdicts of her artful prescriptions.

Spider Mum The Confidante She has bathed in bone-china sipped at by emperors, witnessed the nuptials

of commoners and kings, rested on the graves of the fallen. She has been privy to information that had no price, that changed the course of history: all those secrets and lies, those hopes and dreams, the incantations and machinations.

She never asked to be this repository... to be trusted. She said nothing. Did

nothing. Still the humans were drawn her, to that honeycomb heart, seemingly hypnotized by her poppy-tipped fingers, stretched out and inviting. She had

no choice but to accept the burden, bearing the confidence of others, serving as their soft-petaled vault.

How quickly she learned the power of silence, of listening — a lesson she carried with her to the garden, where she remains hushed still. For she is attuned, now, to the sound of private duets, or mumbled truth revealed between breaths,

inhaling a catalogue of whispered conversations, exhaling in swirls of fluent exaltation, swaying with the thrill of fresh observations.

Lilac The Ingenue She extends herself in ornamental grandeur, bearing a sweet smell of exuberance.

She is early summer, bright and fresh: a violet sunrise, swirling with deep pink vigor and blinding white. Here, in the garden, she will never set, never wilt or decay. She seems to speak for them all in that way, feeding off their deep sighs of pleasure as they catch her perfume on the breeze, reminding them they have

found a place of endless growth and light. She blossoms wildly in this fertile abundance, because she can, because she wants to, because she gives pleasure and gains pleasure... nothing more.

Metallic Beetle The Builder She constructed every square inch of their new home: cementing foundations in magnetic fields, hammering nails at the speed of light, soldering a network

of dark matter until a luminous enclave began to emerge. She worked day and night building this neighborhood of galactic manors and cosmic mansions, milky white chateaus and nebulous citadels.

She was made for this; built for it. Her golden wings — robust, but nimble —

slipped confidently between the dust clouds swept up in her frenzied assembly. The vermilion crisscross of cells on her back served as solid blocks of renewable

power, and her lapis veins, coursing with blue blood, became scaffolds of fortitude whenever she grew weary.

The others encouraged her to take a break — “Rest now, appreciate” — but she told them plainly she doesn’t know how, and cannot imagine slowing down: “My energy’s endless, abilities tremendous and will... relentless.” Dimensions: 8cm Height x 32cm Width x 19cm Length Swarovski Genuine Gemstones: 4,421 pcs of Lapis 75 pcs of Honey Topaz 171 pcs of Citrine 272 pcs of Rhodolite Raspberry 139 pcs of Rhodolite Orchid 1,365 pcs of White Topaz 1,691 pcs of Black Spinel Grand Total: 8,134 pcs of genuine gemstones Estimated Carat Weight: 250 cts. Black Widow The Femme Fatale She stares into space through her ravenous, labradorite eyes. Legs aching with desire, bristles shaking from pangs of hunger. Her appetite is voracious — a blazing-red heat, coursing through her pitch-black spinel. It is notorious, this hunger. She eats her lovers. Not lately, though. In the garden she has no one to kiss and kill.

Oh, how she used to love the game: dancing with her victims before piercing their souls, a macabre waltz of power and attraction, ending with a fatal sting.

Her enzymes would filter through them, breaking them down, turning their insides to thick cream, swirling beneath crunchy shells. Finally, she would cover them in strands of her warm silk and devour them piece by piece.

Now, as she hangs upside down in her web, she is cursed by these dreams of

men from the past. She cannot escape them. On her stomach lies an hourglass of blood, counting the days since her lips tasted love.
