‘Precisely perfect’ New AC Hotel takes its place in Portsmouth The newest addition to downtown Portsmouth’s booming hotel scene is the five-story, upscale AC Hotel by Marriott Portsmouth, located next to 3S Artspace on Vaughan Street. It features the ground-level AC Lounge with a two-sided fireplace, the European-style AC Kitchen that

is open to the public and 156 guest rooms and suites that include high-end designs, stylish furniture and handpicked art features. The hotel offers guests eight suite styles and one executive suite. “Our tagline is AC Hotels are precisely perfect hotels,” says Chris Moulton, general manager of the hotel. “We think about all the things that you need so you don’t have to think about them.” The hotel also includes the Rooftop at the Envio, a restaurant and bar

that features an outdoor deck where guests can enjoy panoramic views of the city’s three bridges and its working waterfront. There’s also The Envio, a wedding and event center that can hold as many as 200 people. It will be able to host conferences, but he also expects there to be “strong demand for wedding receptions,” Moulton said. The AC Hotel project was developed by a joint venture between Cathartes Private Investments and XSS Hotels.

‘A modern twist’ Upgraded rooms at Red Jacket Mountain View Resort The Red Jacket Mountain View Resort, the iconic North Conway destination, underwent a significant renovation that includes upgrades to all 148 guest rooms. The changes included new beds, carpeting, ergonomic desk chairs, new bathrooms, among others – upgrades that “are a modern twist that still maintain the feel of a traditional New Hampshire getaway,” says Paul Rumul, president of The Davenport Companies, which owns the resort. “The redesign aims to evoke a sense of calm and relaxation, all without distracting you from your views of the beautiful Moat Mountain Range,” he says. Teamwork New hotel and restaurant taking shape in Concord There’s a new skyline taking shape at Exit 12 off Interstate 93 in Concord as work nears completion this spring for a new Tru by Hilton hotel with a new T-Bones Great American Eatery soon to follow. Duprey Hospitality and Great NH Restaurants are teaming up on construction of the new hotel and the adjacent T-Bones, transforming the former site of a Days Inn into a destination for tourists, business travelers and families for accommodations or a dining experience. When completed, both hotel and restaurant are expected to be popular destinations because of their convenient location and excellent visibility from I-93.

‘The next step’ Omni Mt. Washington’s Culinary Academy earns federal designation The Omni Mount Washington Resort’s Bretton Woods Culinary Academy recently reached a new milestone by earning designation as a Registered Apprenticeship program with the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship. As a Registered Apprenticeship, those training at the culinary academy will be able to receive a national occupational credential from the DOL. “The Bretton Woods Culinary Academy began as an important way for us not only to invest in our employees and give them an opportunity to begin a career, but also a viable solution for responding to our hiring gaps,” says Josh DeBottis, the resort’s general manager. He calls the DOL “the next step” that brings the program to “a new level of rigor and recognition and provides an additional credential that makes the program more attractive to incoming apprentices.” 6

The Tru by Hilton will be a fourstory hotel with 85 guest rooms and public function space. Tru is described by Hilton as a “brand-new hotel experience that is vibrant, affordable and young-at-heart.” The building features a 2,000square-foot open-concept lobby with multiple areas for guests to work, eat and relax. The guest rooms feature a

design that includes open closets, rolling desks and plenty of storage and power outlets. The T-Bones will be the largest stand-alone T-Bones location for Bedford-based Great NH Restaurants. The 9,240-square-foot restaurant will include a 260-seat indoor dining room and 35-seat outdoor patio.

The culinary academy was developed in 2017 through a partnership with White Mountains Community College. More recently, the resort collaborated with ApprenticeshipNH to have the program approved as a Cook Registered Apprenticeship. ApprenticeshipNH is a grant-funded program that seeks to address workforce needs in industry sectors throughout the state by helping employers develop apprenticeship programs that meet federal standards. The program consists of 503 hours of classroom instruction completed over the course of three years at WMCC. All required coursework is creditbearing, and college credits earned by the apprentices are applied toward a

Culinary Arts Associate Degree awarded by WMCC upon completion. The Registered Apprenticeship program at the Omni Mount Washington Resort also requires about three years of on-the-job training, which equates to 6,200 hours. Cook apprentices learn with the support of a mentor how to prepare, serve and plan a variety of menu items offered at the resort. “This apprenticeship program enables participants to not only begin an exciting new career path in the industry but also the opportunity to work towards a degree that allows the apprentices to learn and develop new skills while still receiving a paycheck,” says Emily Zeien, grant manager at ApprenticeshipNH.

Bubbling up Loon to install eight-place chairlift for 2020-21 season Loon Mountain Resort in Lincoln is installing an eightplace, high-speed bubble chairlift — the first anywhere in the eastern United States and only the second in North America — for the 2020-21 ski season. The Doppelmayr lift will showcase the manufacturer’s new D-Line technology, making it the most technologically advanced lift ever installed in the East and one that will provide unrivaled speed and comfort for skiers.

Plan your special event at

STRAWBERY BANKE MUSEUM

“The Kancamagus 8 chairlift will be a leap into the future of skiing for our guests,” says Jay Scambio, president and general manager of Loon Mountain Resort. “We are committed to bringing the latest advancements to our guests — this lift is the next example of that, following our first-inthe-world dual-frequency RFID installation.”  The state-of-the-art, eight-place chairlift will replace  the Kancamagus Express Quad, which was the most advanced of its kind when originally installed at Loon in 1995, says Scambio Each of the 62 chairs on the Kancamagus 8 will feature eight heated, ergonomically designed and extra-wide seats and tinted bubbles. The ultra-smooth ride will move at a speed of 18 feet per second, delivering skiers to the top in under 4 1/2 minutes. The lift also is equipped with advanced safety features, including auto-locking restraining bars, individual footrests and height-adjustable conveyor loading, which also increases efficiency in transporting guests of all sizes. The Kancamagus 8 is one of several items on Loon’s 10-year growth and improvement plan, says Scambio, adding that the plan “will have a positive impact on development throughout the Lincoln and Woodstock communities — as we travel together on our path to be New England’s premier mountain destination.”

Event planning 101 What does it take to put together a successful, stress-free event?

A successful meeting or conference can be a valuable asset to your business. But as anyone who has attempted to execute one knows, it’s not as easy as it looks. We’ve reached out to a panel of experts to learn what it takes to plan, prepare and execute a smart, interactive and stress-free event. Our experts: James Paone, general manager of Front of House and Rentals, The Music Hall. themusichall.org Paul Hartnett, president, Axis Coach Transportation. axiscoachusa.com Wendy McCoole, community engagement manager, Strawbery Banke Museum. strawberybanke.org Denis Gosselin, president, MFI Productions. mfiproductions.com Courtney Starrett, special events coordinator, Currier Museum of Art. currier.org Q. What’s the single most important detail to consider when choosing an event venue? Paone: “Flexibility is a big one in my book, because you want to make sure the space works for you and your needs. Does the venue offer layouts and plans? Are there enough chairs and tables for your event? Having a good blueprint to build from can make all the difference. The Music Hall has two very versatile spaces which can be adapted easily.” 8

McCoole: “The first priority should be the comfort and engagement of the attendees. Make sure there’s enough space for the group and appropriate lighting and acoustics, accessibility and amenities. It’s great when the venue stands out either because it adds to the purpose of the meeting or mission of the group, or because it’s a unique, memorable and authentic space. Strawbery Banke Museum offers historic spaces and is dedicated to being ‘a place to learn, a place to gather and a sustainable resource for the community.’” Starrett: “I always suggest looking for unique venues that offer guests an experience additional to the actual event itself. The venue says a lot about the quality of the event, so choosing an exceptionally interesting venue will set your event apart. The Currier offers exclusive gallery access included in all facility rentals and can even offer artmaking experiences for team building, networking and social events.” Q. In what ways can someone benefit from a site visit, rather than relying on online impressions? Paone: “The beauty of our Historic Theater is hard to capture in a photo or online. With a site visit, clients can see the majestic theater itself as well as all the spaces behind the scenes, the bar areas, and the whimsical lower lobby and box office. “Our black box theater, The Loft, provides an intimate setting and all the same care and offerings as the historic theater. There’s also something about meeting the staff who will be on hand that day and getting a feel for the accommodations.” McCoole: “In addition to meeting a venue’s contact person face to face, visiting the actual rooms or buildings fosters an understanding by both parties on what’s possible and imagining ways to accommodate to needs you hadn’t thought of.” Starrett: “Seeing is believing. I find that being in the space will tremendously help planners visualize the event. Additionally, having an event expert

MEETINGS & CONVENTION PLANNER 2020

specific to the site you are visiting makes all the difference in collecting venue information efficiently. You may also discover other possibilities while on a site visit that brochures or online marketing may not be able to convey in so many words.” Q. What recent technology changes are available to help a client add value to an event? Starrett: “Projection mapping and advanced lighting systems at events add so much atmosphere and really make a lasting impression for guests. The Currier works with only the best AV and event design companies in the business, which makes all the difference.” Q. What are some of the elements that make your venue ideal for events? Paone: “We [The Music Hall] offer a diverse range of elements, from two different theaters to choose from; accessibility; location in the lovely downtown Portsmouth; latest technology, projectors and screens; and an expert and knowledgeable staff. As beautiful as our spaces are, it is our fantastic events team that truly make each event a successful and memorable one.” McCoole: “Strawbery Banke Museum is a 10-acre living history museum that tells the story of one waterfront New Hampshire neighborhood over 300plus years — in original buildings and gardens that span the centuries. The setting offers a unique and authentic historical backdrop for your event — whether it’s a personal milestone, a company retreat or a group event. “The museum offers visitors free parking, ADA-compliant access to meeting spaces, café and restrooms, and can add on tours of the historic buildings. The museum’s meeting spaces also offer limited catering kitchen facilities as well as on-site catering capabilities.” Starrett: “The Currier Museum of Art is one of the region’s most unique venues offering gallery access, docent-led tours and event spaces that incorpo-

rate the museum’s most iconic works of art. Additionally, the Currier has recently expanded its scope of event services with artfully crafted in-house catering, expert on-site event planners and inclusive package pricing for a seamless planning process. The Currier holds events to a museum-quality standard, so no detail goes unnoticed. “With the help of the Currier events team, your special event will become a work of art from beginning to end. The Currier is centrally located in the heart of Manchester with private parking, state-of-the-art facilities and security for the duration of your event.”

Event transportation Q. What are some of the benefits to providing transportation for attendees at my event? Hartnett: “Safety and liability are important when having an event. With a professional transportation company like Axis Coach Transportation, you are hiring a professionally trained chauffeur with a background check, someone who you can trust with your safety and is familiar with the area. You will be guaranteed that a vehicle will be there on time and you will not have to wait. Also, your company will look professional hiring a reputable service to transport your guests. You will not be leaving safety to chance by using app-based ride share companies that are not safe.” Q. How do you work with potential clients to help them stay within their event budget? Hartnett: “To stay within budget, we have an option to group together guests and can do a point-to-point trip, or if there are a large number of guests we can do a continuous shuttle from the venue to the next destination or hotel. This sometimes saves money. At Axis Coach Transportation, we try to work within your budget.” Q. What event planning elements will a transportation service alleviate? Hartnett: “When you hire a professional transportation company like Axis Coach Transportation, we will figure out the logistics of what you need. We can provide an on-site coordinator to help route your passengers to the correct vehicles. Your guests will arrive on time for the event and, especially if alcohol is served, they will be transported back in a safe manner.”

Event production Q. What’s the most important thing to look for in an event production company? Gosselin: “The most important thing to look for when choosing your event production company for your special day comes down to how that company is perceived and its reputation in the community. Do they work with reputable companies, venues and events? Are their recommended event partners highly regarded in their fields? When looking at a production company, without an understanding of AV yourself, it’s important to understand their reputation and ask if they are a full production company with technicians on staff to handle those aspects or do they work in conjunction with other companies? A reputable AV company will typically have a reputable family of vendors and sub-contractors to recommend. Knowing who is working for you, and if they truly hold the technical skills required to deliver everything promised for your event, is a must.” Q. What type of design preparation can help add value to an event? Gosselin: “When looking to add value to an event, it always comes down to those little details that create a takeaway or memory for your guests. An example might be adding CART (communication access realtime translation) to allow those who are hearing impaired to be included in your message. Another way to make your event have greater reach and depth may be streaming your event live for guests unable to attend or company members in other locations and recording it digitally to lend itself to post-event education, digital marketing or training. “Adding value to your event often derives from not allowing technology or effects to overcomplicate and take over the show but understanding the audience and the message and introducing concepts that heighten your message and meaning.” Q. How can you help make your client’s event interactive and why is that important? Gosselin: “Making your event interactive is crucial to keeping your guests engaged and excited about what you’re trying to say. Audience response systems can be put in place to allow your guests to answer polls

anonymously and display on-screen results in real time or even ask vetted questions through Twitter for a live Q&A with the speaker. If you’re looking to interact with multiple office locations or branches for a kickoff or communicate with outside sponsors or investors, you can incorporate picture-in-picture webcasting displaying the presenter hosted with their slides through a webcast. If you have multiple locations in your venue where guests are present, you can display a compilation of talking points from the current presentation extended onto monitors in other portions of the venue to keep your audience active and aware.” Q. How do you work with potential clients to help them stay within their budget and create a memorable event? Gosselin: “Budget is always something to keep balanced between accomplishing the image and message your company wants to represent while staying attentive to its financial interests and limitations. We like to keep it simple by finding out what our client’s vision is and looking at what they need and what would be nice to have. “Oftentimes, an AV package that was used in a similar venue or for a similar sized event that the client may have recently attended is a great place to start. Identifying the client’s specific needs can help add and subtract equipment and labor for their exact event. Truly taking the time to listen and understand the purpose of the event, and how our clients want their guests to feel leaving it, gives light to what ideas do and do not help accomplish the overarching goal. “There can usually be savings found by working with existing venue’s architectural, acoustic and cosmetic traits to enhance and build out the show rather than adding additional labor and materials to work against what it offers. Using an existing line in the room to organically drape or maybe using a static camera for your video feed instead of a manned camera with an operator, which is more labor intensive, are examples of cost saving we have used in the past to reallocate resources for your company’s key priorities. Understanding the vision and prioritizing will always lead to creating a memorable experience with a controllable budget.”

8 meeting trends to keep an eye on in 2020 The rise of millennials brings team building activities and plant-based cuisine

W

hat’s in store for the events industry this year? Plenty, according to event management companies. Here are eight of the biggest new event trends for 2020: 1. Millennials have become a dominant force in meetings, according to Benchmark, the international hospitality company. Conference attendees in 2020 increasingly average in age from 30 to 45 years old. With millennials comes an accompanying demand for highly advanced and sophisticated technology, significantly increased dietary requirements, personal enrichment experiences curated to individual interests, privacy concerns going well beyond technology and toward individual wellness during the meeting, with planners building in private, personal time for attendees. 2. Creative, plant-based cuisine are the new go-to food choices for 2020, says Benchmark, along with

10

special diets that accomodate a growing list of dietary restrictions. According to event management company Cvent, in the U.S., the portion of consumers under the age of 49 who consider themselves vegans or vegetarians is more than double that of consumers over 50. That means plant-based diets are more popular than ever, so event planners and properties need to adjust their menus. 3. Sustainability will be center stage at events. For events, sustainable initiatives are now the expectation, says Cvent. While small nods to sustainability (like recycling bins at your event) help, events-goers will be more focused on a holistic approach to reduce an event’s carbon footprint. From the miles of travel to the kilowatts of power and pounds of wasted food, each stage of the event lifecycle has its own impact and needs to be assessed by planners and venues alike.

MEETINGS & CONVENTION PLANNER 2020

4. Team building will be the most popular inclusion in meetings this year, and initiatives that involve community and charitable activities for social impact are what planners are looking for in 2020, says Benchmark. Giving back enhances personal and group mindfulness and empathy, which helps develop a productive team, and this is on the meeting agenda this year, as is the strong desire is for group experiences that inspire productive and positive change and leadership development. 5. The desire to explore and discover is a flourishing element of meeting agendas in 2020, says Benchmark. Moving off property and experiencing local color — or, if in an urban location, historic and cultural sites, cuttingedge restaurants or micro distilleries — is an essential request of planners for their groups this year. 6. Demand will continue to outpace supply. The rise in demand for meetings and events is continuing — up 5-10%, according to CWT Meetings & Travel. That means planners should adjust budgets to anticipate higher rates and book event space as early as possible. 7. “Bleisure” travel isn’t going anywhere. According to research from the Experience Institute, 71% of respondents said they consider the destination in the decision to attend a meeting. And 20-30% say it’s the deciding factor. These attendees blend the worlds of business and leisure. It’s given rise to a new, multigenerational segment that drives destination decisions. 8. Attendees want more control over the event agenda, according to Cvent. In fact, 96% of the Social Tables audience believe events are expected to be more personalized than ever. An example of that personalization: at a major event in Montréal, C2, attendees were offered 11 — yes, 11 — different ways to spend every hour of the three days.

If you plan it, will they come? Six key ways to get the word out about your event

Y

ou’ve got your event all planned, down to every foreseeable detail. But no matter how well planned, what are you doing to make sure people come to your event? Because, face it: Without attendees, even the most impeccably planned event is doomed to fail. So how do you make the most of your event promotion, especially on a tight budget? Here are some strategies that can help get your event noticed. 1. Create and use your event hashtag every chance you get. Whenever you mention your event, make a habit of including the event hashtag. This goes for your social media posts but also other marketing channels and any printed material. Reinforcing the hashtag helps anchor your event and lets it stay on top of people’s minds. And don’t forget to make sure participants know the event hashtag and suggest that they use it when talking about the event. That’ll help you also reach their audience base. 2. Get smart about SEO. Whether you’re writing up an enticing description on your event page, publishing a blog post about the event or putting out a press release, you can benefit from giving it a bit of search engine optimization love. But how do you know what people search for? There are a number of free keyword research tools that can help. To start with, check out the appropriately titled Keyword Tool or Google’s own Keyword Planner. 3. Crowdsource your marketing material. Your event attendees can be a great marketing asset. If you’ve already organized similar events, ask past attendees to post pictures or videos of the event. (Don’t forget to ask them to use your event hashtag.) Nothing is more credible than memories of your event coming from real guests. 4. Sell special tickets. Special tickets can do wonders for your event promotion, so don’t neglect them. Consider mixing up a variety of ticket types, such as: • Early bird tickets: A discounted ticket that rewards people for acting fast. Set a limited number of tickets for sale early on, priced below your standard tickets. You get some early traction in selling out your event. It’s a win-win. • Group tickets: Entice your guests to bring their friends along by making it cheaper to buy multiple tickets as a group. This way, people have a motivation to spread the word and invite someone they know, giving you some free publicity in the process. • VIP tickets: These turn the concept of discounted tickets on its head. VIP tickets cost more than your general admission tickets, but those who buy them get special privileges, like better seating or a quicker way inside the venue. 5. Embrace social media. It’s not enough to know that social media sites exist — learn to use them to your advantage. The most important thing is to limit yourself to a few key channels rather than trying to be everywhere and spreading yourself too thin. Your audience probably has a preferred social channel, so that’s a good place to start. Here’s how you can use the different social channels: • Facebook: This will most likely be the place for your main profile. You can share detailed updates about the event, add a “Find tickets” link and interact with your audience. • Twitter: Great for quick, real-time updates both before and during the event. One of the best places to use your hashtag. • LinkedIn: If your event is focused on a professional audience, this is where you’ll find them. There are communities of people interested in specific topic, so find one that fits with your event’s main theme. • Instagram and Pinterest: These very visual channels are perfect for sharing some teaser images of the event and giving people exclusive behind-the-scenes shots of e.g., event preparations and key speakers or performers. 12

MEETINGS & CONVENTION PLANNER 2020

Spread the word about your event with the ‘tell a friend’ offer: Provide a discounted ticket to those who get three people to sign up for your emails.

6. Up your email marketing game. Yes. Social media is huge nowadays. But don’t underestimate the power of a great mailing list — in fact, email remains the most effective digital channel out there. If you already have a list of attendees from a previous event, email is the perfect way to update them on your upcoming one. If not, start building one right away. Simply add a way for people to sign up to your email updates on your event page or site. They’ll be able to receive the latest announcements about the event and you’ll get a direct line of communication to your guests. Think up an incentive to get people to sign up for your email announcements (e.g., the first 100 to sign up get a discounted ticket). Here are some other ideas on using email to spread the word: • “Tell a friend” offer: If they get three people to sign up, you give them a special group rate • Announce when special tickets go on sale • Remind them about ongoing competitions and giveaways on other channels • Send them exclusive previews of your speakers, performers and activities • Ask for feedback through quizzes or surveys But remember: While email is the most powerful direct marketing tool, use it sparingly. Recipients’ inboxes will appreciate it.

The Seven Regions of NH New Hampshire is made up of seven very different regions, each as exciting as the next. The Seacoast, Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee, Lakes Region, Merrimack Valley, Monadnock Region, White Mountains and Great North Woods are filled with natural beauty, cultural events and classic New England living. It’s one family vacation idea after another, and the only way to truly appreciate it all is to see it for yourself. Use the list at left to learn more about each of New Hampshire’s distinct, yet equally unforgettable, regions.

 GREAT NORTH WOODS

 DARTMOUTHLAKE SUNAPEE

Halfway between the Equator and the North Pole, the Great North Woods is at once rugged and inviting. This is where travelers over the centuries have come in search of beauty, adventure and inspiration, while enjoying legendary North Woods hospitality. Here is where you can go take a hike to watch the sunrise before breakfast, go fly fishing after lunch and get dressed up for an elegant dinner at a grand hotel. Whatever your passion, from fine dining to snowmobiling to camping under the stars, the Great North Woods is a destination in which to indulge it.

 WHITE

LAKES REGION

 MONADNOCK REGION

 

 MERRIMACK VALLEY

The Lakes Region: the name alone stirs memories of blissful, sunny days spent on the water, the joy of vacations, boat rides and camp, when everything moved at a slow summer simmer; and you connected with people and places that still resonate within you today. Summer may be the Lakes Region’s best-known season, but wrap the hillsides in spring green, the blazing colors of fall or a thick blanket of snow, and it is every bit as magical. While there are 273 lakes and ponds in the Lakes Region, one lake dominates them all: Lake Winnipesaukee. 14

For the New England of picture books, you need go no further than the Monadnock Region. Here you’ll find small villages where white clapboard churches and town halls edge manicured town greens. Rolling fields with neatly planted rows quilt the hillsides, and country roads lined by rock walls invite exploration at a leisurely pace.

MOUNTAINS If one New Hampshire region is synonymous with recreation, it’s the White Mountains. Forty-eight 4,000 foot peaks are found here, along with the highest mountain in the Northeast, 6,288-foot Mt. Washington; but it is the 800,000-acre White Mountain National Forest that truly shapes the region.

If only one region of New Hampshire could be known as a study in contrasts, it would be the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee Region. Named for Dartmouth — Hanover’s Ivy League college — and Sunapee — the crystal clear lake, State Park and mountain, all of the same name — the region includes quiet country roads and rolling farmland, pristine lakes, a bustling hub of higher education and medicine, and some of today’s favorite family activities and recreation.

In New Hampshire, where the capital’s name, Concord, is a synonym for harmony, it’s not surprising to find music and the performing visual arts central to life in the city and the entire Merrimack Valley Region. The state’s three largest cities — Concord, Manchester and Nashua — have an especially rich cultural life, with a variety of offerings year-round.

 SEACOAST New Hampshire’s seacoast captures the essence of New England’s oceanfront. In just 18 miles of coastline, there are long, sandy beaches, working ports, offshore islands, surf-stung rocks, and popular resort towns and villages that date back nearly four hundred years.

Many visitors begin their tours of New Hampshire along the coast, drawn by the sound and scent of the sea, and intrigued by all the region offers.
