ou’ve said “yes” and the date is set! Now begins the work — and the joy — of planning your wedding. There are lots of decisions ahead — gown, flowers, reception site and more. We’re here to help, providing inspiration and guiding you along the way. This Fall/Winter issue of New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE will give you tons of ideas to create a wedding that’s both romantic and fun. You’ll see the latest (and most beautiful) gowns set amid fields of lupines in Sugar Hill and learn how to put a modern spin on the traditional rustic look. You’ll also meet six couples who decided to elope. Our “Real NH Weddings” will show you different venues and how to use them creatively. And check out our comprehensive list of the state’s venues, with all the information you need to know. We can’t pack all the information into this one magazine, so go to our website (bridenh.com) for extra features and links to local resources. And check us out on Facebook at facebook.com/nhbride. Our “Best of BRIDE” online poll begins on September 11. Be sure to vote for the wedding professionals who provide couples with the best quality, service and artistry at bridenh.com. The results will appear in the Spring/Summer 2018 issue. Enjoy this special time with your love. You have our very best wishes for a wonderful life together.

Creative Flowers Think outside the bouquet when it comes to flowers. At this wedding, Marie St. Onge of Paisley Floral Design Studio created strings of orbs as a backdrop for the ceremony space. She also topped a teepee with flowers and greens, which was used as a unique spot for photos. Lastly, for a new twist on the decorative gown hanger, she used wood and more blooms and greenery. paisleyfloraldesign.com

This beautiful Pronovias design has an illusion neckline created in crystal tulle and lace with gemstone appliquĂŠs, which blend into the skin, creating a spectacular tattoo effect. The bodice is fitted at the waist with a discreet bow in crepe, leading to a beautifully draped train skirt created in crepe and tulle. The cathedral-length veil with subtle organza edging is from Erica Koesler. The silver earrings are from MalisHenderson. Available at A Day to Remember Bridal Boutique
A classic but very trendy gown (left). Sophisticated but very sensual. Simple but very stylish. That describes this mermaid design from Atelier Pronovias with Josephine embroidery and gemstone appliquĂŠ. The skirt opens out into a large train, while the bodice displays a plunging V-neckline at the bust and back, which accentuates the armholes to give it that extra feminine touch. All-over geometric organza trim adorns this strapless ball gown (right) of sand and ivory from Justin Alexander. The cathedral-length train creates a timeless yet trendy wedding day look. Both available at Uniquely Couture Bridal
A soft wave to hair that is slightly pulled back (top) creates a romantic look. The pearl and crystal earrings and long strand necklace are by MalisHenderson. The hair (above) has a bohemian wave. The delicate pearl and crystal headband is from Pronovias; the handmade geometric crystal and silver earrings, from Erica Koesler. New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE | 41

The beauty of this gown by Pronovias (left) is in the details. An illusion neck is adorned with off-white and champagne-colored appliqué while soft Chantilly lace appliqué hides among the tulle layers of the skirt. The beaded Chantilly lace mermaid wedding dress (above) by Justin Alexander features a deep V-neckline, lace straps, a tulle handkerchief skirt and a deep keyhole back. The chapel-length veil from Washington Millinery features a delicate tulle body with heavy Alençon lace edging. Both available at Uniquely Couture Bridal
Modern sexiness meets timeless elegance in this sophisticated, full-length mermaid gown from Blue by Enzoani. A sheer guipure lace bodice and sweetheart neckline are perfectly romantic with thin spaghetti straps adorned with stones that trail along a breathtaking low illusion back neckline. The celebratory feast table features crystal glassware mixed with gold mercury candle votives. “That flows beautifully,” stylist Jessica Raymond says, “with the lace-like details of the hand-painted china and gold textured flatware.” Also drawing attention to the wooden farm table are antique bronze candelabras and a lush floral garland by Ivy & Aster Floral Design. The garland includes garden roses, peonies, stock and dahlias, as well as accenting ferns and mixed eucalyptus and lemon leaf foliages. The votives and candelabras are available as rentals from Ivy & Aster.
Guests are welcomed with a signature beverage station, where light cocktails — a chilled sparkling rosé cocktail and herb-infused mojito — await them.
Highlighted in the center of the dessert spread is a two-tiered white fondant cake adorned with edible gold leaf by For Goodness Cakes. “It is given the perfect finishing touches of greenery and fragrant florals,” says Raymond. Surrounding the cake is an array of desserts. Summer berries with chocolate mousse, fruit tarts, pastel macarons and designer donuts add bursts of color to the table. Classic treats — strawberry shortcake and key lime pie — are served in shooter-style glasses to add a fun spin on old favorites.

rustic A MODERN SPIN ON
Many New Hampshire weddings of late have reflected the rustic nature of the state — using barns as backdrops, wildflowers gathered into bouquets, burlap accents and mason jars. “Too many mason jars,” says Kate Malloy of Malloy Weddings. “It’s time for a modern, sleek spin on the traditional New Hampshire elements.” For this inspiration shoot, Malloy and her crew take traditional New Hampshire elements, including granite and the emerald color of pine, and create a clean-lined wedding that makes us look differently at New Hampshire and all it has to offer as a wedding destination.
THE CEREMONY — FRAMED BY THE BARN DOOR, WEATHERED WOOD AND WHITE FLOWERS
An antique barn amid a forest in Alton is the setting, with Mother Nature providing a wintry look. Granite pieces take the forefront of the grooms’ boutonnieres, which are accented with white lisianthus. The attendants hold tight bouquets of tulips, ranunculus, anemones and granite wrapped in emerald green silk satin. New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE | 55

TO CREATE A CLEAN, MODERN LOOK, A CUSTOM-BUILT FARM TABLE WAS FINISHED WITH A HIGH-GLOSS GRAY PAINT. 56 | New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE
“It was a spin on the popular rustic mattefinished farm tables everyone wants right now,” says Kate Malloy. “The table is paired with clear acrylic Chiavari chairs, a familiar silhouette, but with a more modern finish.”
New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE | 57
Wine glasses in emerald green add pops of color to the simple china. “We finished the connection to the Granite State with slate chargers for each place setting that look like granite,” Malloy says. “It adds depth and grounds the overall table design.” The all-white flowers are tulips, ranunculus and Star of Bethlehem.
THE STARK WHITE FLOWERS ARE ARRANGED SYMMETRICALLY AND COMPACTLY, WITH EACH VASE WRAPPED IN GREEN FAUX LEATHER.
The emerald-green and gray color palette is carried through to the save-the-date, invitation suite and menus. Daniele Cyr Hosser of Weddings by DARCI Creative says their designer, Riddy, hand-painted a watercolor wash to tie in the colors. The name cards and envelopes were done in hand calligraphy.
New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE | 59
A MODERN AND ELEGANT LOOK FOR THE WEDDING PARTY The purple shades of the attendants’ dresses provide a pleasing complement to the emerald green pops of color. The plum bobbinet tulle dress on the left, from Watters, has an empire waist with a floor-length A-line skirt. On the right is a dress in eggplant, also from Watters, with a sweetheart bodice and wide waistband. The skirt’s layers float with every movement.
60 | New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE
“I wanted to keep the hair clean and modern, but with some excitement,” says Lena Hartford of Hair That Moves. Because it was an outdoor wedding — in this case, says Hartford, “a winter wonderland” — the attendants wearing their hair up made the look more dependable. The grooms also had a little styling, Hartford says.
An emerald palette was used for the attendants’ eyes. “That exaggerates the shape for a more sultry look,” says Kristin James of Making Faces Weddings. Following a growing trend, James says the men were given a shine-free complexion and “a little warmth.”
New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE | 61
THE CAKE EXTENDS THE THEME “It replicates our natural New Hampshire granite,” says Shara Chickering of Chickadee Hill Cakes. The square, four-tiered, marbled fondant confection is accented with pops of rock candy emerald ‘geodes.’ Flavors include apple spice with chai and caramel swirled buttercream, and chocolate fudge with bourbon pecan caramel filling.

IT HASN’T GOTTEN A LOT OF ATTENTION (perhaps because it's mostly done in secret), but elopements on are the rise. Couples — for a lot of different reasons — don’t want a traditional wedding. But that doesn’t mean the wedding can’t be chic. Venues around the state are offering elegant elopement packages, where everything is ready when you arrive — bouquet, champagne, justice of the peace, the works. We talked to six couples who chose a bucolic B&B, the Inn at Valley Farms in Walpole, as their getaway venue. Their photographer, Kendal J. Bush, captured the precious moments to later share with family and friends.

The Perfect Wedding { Sarah Gamble and Josh Cannon }
SAVE-THE-DATE CARDS had already been sent out, but then Sarah and Josh had second thoughts about a big wedding. “It just didn’t feel right,” says Sarah. “For us, getting married was about our future, our love, us.” They canceled the wedding and eloped soon after. It was just the two of them. “If we invited anyone, we would have to invite everyone,” she says. They were married at sunset at the inn, her bouquet flowers picked from its garden. “We said our vows

surrounded by green rolling hills, the chirping of crickets and the promise of champagne afterward,” she says. To let friends and family know, they sent postcards from the inn. Neither has any regrets. “We can’t imagine being married any other way,” Sarah says. One plus — saving money by not having a traditional wedding allowed them to buy a house. Advice for others who might want to elope? Sarah says, “The person you love is all you need for the perfect wedding.”
Simply Enjoying { Nicole Gemoules and David Koonce }
F OR THEIR WEDDING, Nicole and David wanted “low stress, no stress.” After attending a lot of big weddings, they knew they didn’t want to do all the work that’s required for what Nicole calls “effectively a large party.” Instead, they were wed in a simple ceremony atop a hill at the inn. They did have nine guests, their immediate families, invited with short notice. Nicole’s niece was the flower girl, David’s sister played the violin, and his mom read a beautiful poem. Afterward, there was champagne, and a steak and lobster dinner prepared by David at the farmhouse. “We were focused on simply enjoying the experience,” Nicole says. A few months later, for those who didn’t attend, they hosted a celebration at their home. By eloping, they saved a ton of money — the wedding cost less than $3,500. “Keep in mind,” Nicole advises others who might consider eloping, “that the size of the wedding ceremony does not correlate to a successful marriage.”

Carefree Moments { Michelle Fish and Robert Horn }
MICHELLE AND ROBERT STARTED OUT PLANNING A TRADITIONAL WEDDING, but after a weekend of visiting venues and realizing how much time, money and planning would be required, Michelle says they “looked at each other in the car on the way home and just said ‘Forget this, let’s elope.’” That way, she says, there would be no worries about “someone being late or the flowers not being right or that Sallie doesn’t like Sue or the food getting cold.” They were married, just before sunset, at the inn. After they exchanged the vows they had written, they toasted their new life with champagne. “Our wedding day was all about us and we got to spend our first moments as husband and wife together, carefree and uninterrupted.” Telling their family and friends they had eloped was the hardest part. “We’re from Alabama, the land of large traditional weddings, and this kind of thing is not heard of,” Michelle says. But they needn’t have worried; everyone was supportive. They would all celebrate at a party a few weeks later. Any regrets? “Nope,” says Michelle. “Not a one."

Happy to Not Worry { Emily Eklof and Colin Abrahamson }
“WE KNEW WE WERE GOING TO ELOPE BEFORE WE EVEN GOT ENGAGED,” says Emily. The cost and complicated family dynamics were the reasons why. Plus, neither of them really wanted a big wedding. They researched New England elopements and chose the inn. On a hot and rainy August day, they were married there, with farm animals all around. “Colin’s favorite part was when the goats ran into the barn while we were waiting for the rain to stop,” Emily says. “He loves goats,
and that made his day.” The best part for Emily was not having to do any planning. “I have been involved in so many weddings, and I was happy to not worry about colors, favors, etc.” The only downside for Emily and Colin was that family and friends weren’t there to share the day. To let them know, Emily says they “called some people, and texted and emailed others.” They’d do it again, Emily says, though “maybe not in August.”

Every Girl’s Dream { Alysa Rentschler and Jon Anderson }
“WE’D CHOOSE TO ELOPE AGAIN IN A HEARTBEAT,” says Alysa. “A romantic getaway was the perfect start to our marriage.” Alysa and Jon did keep some of the usual traditions for their wedding — Alysa wore something borrowed, something blue, and included her grandmother’s favorite flower in her bouquet; Jon used a flask that had been gifted to him for the big day. Their friends and family knew they were eloping. “Even though the day was shared between just the two of us,” Alysa says, “we felt surrounded by the love of our family
70 | New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE
and friends.” Their parents had sent along words of love and encouragement to include in the ceremony. The couple loved that they were on their own timeline and that they could choose what they wanted in the moment. Also appealing was less planning, less stress and more money for a honeymoon. Alysa says, "At the end of the day, I felt like a beautiful bride standing in front of the man I chose to share my forever with, and isn't that every girl's dream?"
A Magical Weekend
VERY QUIET AND SPIRITUAL — that’s how Camila describes their wedding. “It was all we could hope for and more,” she says. “It just felt right.” It was the couple’s busy schedules that convinced them to elope. “I literally just had to show up at the farm, get my makeup done and get dressed. A dedicated staff helped with all the details,” Camila says. Another factor in the decision was that Camila’s family lived in Brazil. Instead of complicated and expensive travel for the family, the ceremony was FaceTime’d so they could see it live. One person who did attend — the couple’s 7-year-old son Aidan. “I loved the memories we built as family. I can say it was a magical weekend for all three of us.” For others who might want to elope, Camila’s advice is to “call different places, talk to the owners, find someone you feel comfortable with, and find a place and scenery that speaks to you.” For them, it was a peaceful, beautiful farm.
