n a time when Christmas ornaments can be found on store shelves by late August and garish displays in big-box stores beckon for your dollars at every turn, classic holiday scenes can seem a thing of the past. But here’s the thing: That picture-postcard image of a group of youngsters, noses pressed up against storefronts eagerly ogling sparkling displays, is real — you just have to know where to look. Luckily, in a state full of picturesque main streets and great downtowns, scenes from holidays gone by are recreated every year. Brick storefronts are gussied up with sparkling lights, shopkeepers offer cocoa and cider while a soundtrack ranging from bell-ringers to Bing Crosby drifts through the crowded sidewalks. From the notches to the beaches, New Hampshire’s communities from Exeter to Bethlehem and Keene to Gorham have independent artisans and shops offering unique and quaint gifts from the Granite State, and more than several towns and regions have events planned to help bring locals and visitors alike to storefronts.

Can’t decide on what to buy? Each year the League sells an ornament designed by one of its members. The tradition began in 1988, and the Annual Ornament has become a must-have holiday treasure. This year’s piece, “Pitter Patter,” is a whimsical Rhodium-plated metal elf boot with etched and silkscreened details. Crafted by Sussy-Rose Shields, the ornament is sold exclusively at a League of New Hampshire Craftsmen Fine Craft Gallery and in the online store at nhcrafts.org. Office Secret Santa The office holiday soirée can pose a few challenges — not the least of which is choosing an appropriate gift for the secret Santa gift exchange. You want to be creative, but not too informal. You may want to impress a manager, but without coming off as an apple-polisher. Our advice: relax, have fun (but not too much fun, lest someone end up in the supply closet/doghouse) and bring a little of the Granite State along.

Your intern has worked all semester for little more than three credits and a hearty thank you. Why not send him/ her off with a useful memento? BaileyWorks bags are built for life, and will accompany your former sortof-coworker through the rest of school and into the professional world. We’re partial to the Super Pro with a Cordura shell and a waterproof lining. BaileyWorks at 55 Main St., Newmarket, (603) 292-6485, baileyworks.com

For the boss There are a million do’s and don’ts when it comes to purchasing a gift for your manager — don’t be too informal, but don’t go overboard; be creative, but not weird; don’t be cheap, but don’t break the bank. The solution, according to the experts: a group gift. There are plenty of gift baskets and wines you can gift, but if you’re going sweet, you can’t beat something from the Dancing Lion. These master chocolatiers craft truly unique, memorable, artistic creations. Sipping some Mayan drinking chocolate at the Manchester shop is a unique experience, and one that is also available in a take-home gift bag. 917 Elm St., Manchester, (603) 625-4043, dancinglion.us

For the lunch room chef One of the most underrated kitchen tools is a great cutting board. It protects the counter top, prevents your knife from going dull and keeps everything more sanitary. This New Hampshire cutting board, by New Hampshire Bowl and Board, does all that while looking sharp. And if they’ve already got one, you can turn it upside-down and try to pass it off as Vermont. Shop the outlet store in Webster at 1213 Battle St., (603) 648-9566, newhampshirebowlandboard.com

NEW HAMPSHIRE MAGAZINE’S GIFT GUIDE 2016

For the dress code flaunter Maybe he’s unaware of appropriate office attire, maybe he doesn’t care, or maybe he’s a magazine writer. Either way, Mr. Dress Code Flaunter needs some help in the clothing department. Try to sharpen him up with an Old Man in the Mountain necktie from Mystic River Ties. Choose blue, green or gray — because gray goes with almost anything. (603) 282-7269, mysticriverties.com

For the Don Draper wannabe Three-martini lunches are a thing of the past, and sipping while on the clock is a quick way to get yourself called to human resources, but if you’ve got a coworker that fancies the occasional Old Fashioned, Simon Pearce glassware is the way to go. The Ascutney Double Old-Fashioned Set comes in a gift box and is a set of two, so the recipient can

share his or her tipple. Simon Pearce is known for its heritage and unmatched craftsmanship, and these tumblers bring a sense of sophistication and class to glass. 15 South Main St., Hanover, (603) 643-0100, simonpearce.com

For the office dog Not every office is lucky enough to have four-legged coworkers around, but there’s a couple here, and they’re an always-welcome addition to the day. North Woods Animal Treats will make your Coleman or Cleo feel like valued, productive members of the corporate structure. They’re baked in small batches with all natural human-grade ingredients. Choose a parmesan moose or peanut butter bear shaped treat. nhmade. com/product/north-woods-animal-treats

For the office caffeine fiend Bypass the nationwide chain for a much better cup of joe. Coffee Coffee, in Salem, carries super high-quality beans from around the world. Much of their stock comes from small farms high up in the mountains, which means more rainfall and a harder bean that’s lower in caffeine (making the chatty cube-mate a little easier to take on Monday morning) and imparting a bold flavor. Choose from a staggering list of options that range from Ethiopian Yiragcheffe to Costa Rican Tarrazu. 326 South Broadway, Salem, (603) 912-5381, coffeeroastersnh.com

Master the Yankee Swap Yankee swaps are a time-honored holiday tradition here in New England. The concept is simple enough: Guests bring a gift to the party costing less than an agreed-upon price limit — usually around $20. When it’s your turn, you choose a gift, open it and then decide whether to swap it with someone else or keep it. The only thing worse than showing up empty-handed is bringing a gift that everyone tries to trade away. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Bring a great gift made right here in the Granite State and your fellow party guests will be vying for your item.

Don’t forget Fido

Functional and flattering Fine Wine Designs’ handcrafted Designer Stemware Coasters, made in Nashua, will not only protect your furniture from condensation, they will also wow your holiday guests (four-pack, $12). Available in several fabric choices. Find them at Gilmanton Winery & Vineyard, 528 Meadow Pond Road, Gilmanton, (603) 267-8251, gilmantonwinery.com.

Dual-purpose candles Wick-It Cool Candles are cool-burning soy candles (5 oz., $10.95) that will make your home smell nice, and bonus — the oil soothes dry skin and is excellent for massage. Scents include lilac, cherry bomb and green tea. Find them at Sully’s Superette, 10 N. Mast St., Goffstown, (603) 497-8176, sullyssuperette.com.

Barkin’ Biscuits’ best seller is the peanut butter bones — wholewheat based and made with the creamiest organic peanut butter. Barkin’ Biscuits products do not contain fillers, additives or preservatives, and are free of all by-products (8.5 oz., $7). Please your pooch and head to Calef’s Country Store, 606 Franklin Pierce Hwy, Barrington, (603) 664-2231, calefs.com.

For coffee connoisseurs Give the gift of coffee roasted locally by Woodshed Roasting Company located in the Lakes Region. They have several options from the Lakehouse Blend to the Winnipesaukee Weekend Blend to the Pink Ribbon Blend. Thre’s something for every palate (14 oz, $12). Pass the mustard Blackwater Mustard’s award-winning hot/sweet mustard in a pint mason jar (with a handle!) is great on brats, burgers and dogs or as a companion for pretzels and beer. Bring it to your next office party ($11). Find it at Robie’s Country Store, 9 Riverside St., Hooksett, (603) 485-7761, blackwatermustard.com.

You can’t have a movie night at home without the popcorn. Michele’s Sweet Shoppe in Londonderry has you covered with its Movie Pack that includes a bag of plain popcorn, a bag of Extra Cheddar, a box of candy and a popcorn container. All packaged and ready for gifting ($16). Visit Michele’s Sweet Shoppe at the Crossroads Mall, Londonderry, (603) 425-2946, michelesweetshoppe.com.

Handmade to your home These handcrafted, made-to-order ornaments, created in Wolfeboro, provide an old-fashioned feel to your holiday décor. Featured in both Yankee Magazine and Martha Stewart Living, guests will no doubt make note of these hand-etched, handsome additions to your tree. Reclaimed wood topped with a gingham ribbon will ensure that whoever picks this in the swap will want to keep it ($5.50 each, $14.25 for a set of three). birchlandinghome.com

Give the Gift of Experience Lessons and experiences keep on giving throughout the year. Soon enough that jelly-of-the-month jar will be empty, the socks will have holes and let’s face it, Chia Pets are just creepy. So why give someone a tie when you can give him or her a chance to live out a dream? Learning a new skill, taking up a new hobby or finally attaining a lifelong goal will mean much more in the long run. Besides, you can’t re-gift flying lessons.

Whipping Something Up If there’s someone on your list who has high aspirations in the kitchen, then the chefs and teachers at Berrybogg Farm will show how to achieve them. They walk students through preparing dishes ranging from orange mascarpone brunch rolls and Champagne syllabub to pavlova roll with fruit and meringue tips. Classes are limited to 12 people, and focus on using fresh, local ingredients in the recipes. 650 Province Rd., Strafford, (603) 664-2100, berryboggfarm.com

Get the beach boy (or girl) on your list up and riding with surf lessons at Summer Sessions on Rye Beach or in Portsmouth. Private lessons are the fastest, safest and easiest way to learn. Sweeten the Season Try These Cookie Recipes to Get the Party Started

T

hose who love their holidays on the sweet side shouldn’t miss the 20th annual Inn to Inn Holiday Cookie and Candy Tour that provides visitors with some sweet deals to go with a tempting trail of tasty treats.

Visitors can tour 11 Mount Washington Valley inns decked out in their holiday finery, offering cookies, candies and a collection of recipes. This year’s Inn to Inn Holiday Cookie and Candy Tour will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 10 and 11. The tour stretches from Hart’s Location, to Eaton, NH, and Fryeburg, Maine, with an anticipated 11 inns opening their doors to those in search of fabulous holiday treats, recipes and decorating ideas. No inn is more than 15 minutes from the next, with many much closer.

Christmas Crinkles Created for the Darby Field Inn by Chef Waneeta Marquis ½ cup butter 2 cups sugar 1 tbsp vanilla 4 eggs 3 cups all purpose flour 2 tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt ½ cup powdered sugar red and/or green food coloring

Macaroon Cookies Old Red Inn and Cottages 3 cups sweetened flaked coconut ¾ cup sugar 3 egg whites ¼ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

22

Beat on medium speed all ingredients for 2 minutes. Drop by teaspoon on parchment paper and bake for 25 minutes in a 325 degree oven. When done, cool for 3 minutes then add cherry to center.

Mix butter, sugar and vanilla in a large bowl. Stir in eggs, one at a time. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt. Add food coloring until desired color is reached; you may divide dough beforehand to make two different colored cookies. Cover and refrigerate at least 1/2 hour. Preheat the oven to 350°. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper and grease lightly with baking spray. Drop dough by teaspoonfuls into powdered sugar; roll around to coat and shape into balls. Place about 2 inches apart on cookie sheets. Bake 10 – 12 minutes, or until almost no imprint remains when touched lightly in center. Immediately remove from cookie sheets to cooling racks. Yield: 4 dozen cookies.

For more information on the tour, visit countryinnsinthewhitemountains.com. If you can’t make it, try recreating some of the treats with these recipes — straight from some of the participating inns.

Makes about 40 cookies

Dark Chocolate Peppermint Brownies Snowvillage Inn For Brownie Layer ¾ cup unsalted butter 10.5 ounces fine quality bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped (not unsweetened and no more than 60% Cacao if marked) 1 ½ cups packed light brown sugar 3 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 ¼ teaspoons vanilla ¾ cup flour ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons unsweetened Dutch process cocoa powder ¾ teaspoon salt Make brownie layer Preheat oven to 375° Melt butter and chocolate with brown sugar in a 3-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until smooth. Remove from heat. Whisk in eggs and vanilla until combined. Whisk in flour, cocoa and salt until just combined. Spread batter evenly in baking pan and bake until set and a wooden pick inserted in center comes out with moist crumbs adhering, about 20 minutes. For Peppermint Layer 1-2 cups chopped peppermint candies or candy canes ¾ cup heavy cream 15 ounces fine white chocolate, chopped 1 tablespoon peppermint extract

Put unwrapped peppermint candies or candy canes in a plastic Ziploc bag and with a rolling pin or hammer, break them into chunks. Set the broken candies aside. Bring cream to a simmer in a 2- to 3-quart saucepan and remove from heat. Pour the cream over the white chocolate in a bowl. Let stand 1 minute, then whisk until smooth. Stir in the peppermint extract and chill, covered, stirring occasionally, until thick, about 30 minutes. Spread the peppermint white chocolate over the cooled brownie in an even layer. Citrus Cranberry Shortbread Cookies Snowvillage Inn 2 cups flour ¼ teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt 1 cup butter, softened ¾ cup confectioner’s sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract ½ teaspoon almond extract 1 ½ tablespoons grated orange zest 1 cup minced dried cranberries For decorating: 2 cups white chocolate 1 tablespoon heavy cream 1/2 cup dried cranberries

Lightly butter a 13 x 9-inch baking pan.

Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl; set aside. Beat the butter and confectioner’s sugar with an electric mixer in a large bowl until smooth. Stir in the vanilla and almond extracts and orange zest. Mix in the flour mixture until just incorporated. Fold in the cranberries; mixing just enough to evenly combine. Divide the dough into two equal portions, and roll into logs about 7 inches long. Wrap each log in wax paper or plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours. Preheat an oven to 350° Remove wax paper and cut the cookie dough into 3/4-inch slices. Arrange the slices on a baking sheet about 1 inch apart. Bake until light brown around the edges. For decorating: On a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, place the baked and cooled cookies in rows. Melt the white chocolate with the heavy cream in a double boiler. When it is smooth, drizzle ribbons of melted white chocolate back and forth over the cookies making a pretty pattern. Dot the white chocolate stripes here and there with dried cranberries.

Staying Warm Belly up to the (cocoa) bar.

W

ith a familiar chill joining the excitement in the air this time of year, there’s nothing more comforting than a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Its unmistakable aroma conjures images of holidays past and its flavor ushers in a tantalizing refuge from the frosty environs just outside.

The only thing better than sipping a cup of cocoa may be sharing it with others. Author, food writer and New Hampshire resident Hillary Davis has put together a recipe for building a do-ityourself hot chocolate bar. Follow these steps to craft a sweet treat that’ll have your guests raving as they indulge in the welcoming warmth of your home. Also, allow us to recommend that her latest book, “French Desserts,” makes a wonderful gift for the home cook on your list.

Do-It-Yourself Hot Chocolate Bar Makes 14 cups Hillary Davis lived for a time in the hills of southern France, where she crafted this recipe. During the winter months, she’d set up this hot chocolate bar on the wide stone ledge next to her fireplace. The fire would be crackling and copper pots gleaming as they hung above the dancing flames. As guests finished dinner and wandered into the living room, they would find this spread waiting for them. They could fill their cups, then savor the warmth of the fire and the flavor of hot chocolate and Grand Marnier.

Hillary’s books, including “French Desserts,” are available at Gibson’s Bookstore, 45 South Main St., Concord and at hillary-davis.com.

NEW HAMPSHIRE MAGAZINE’S GIFT GUIDE 2016

Special Equipment Food processor, 5-quart or larger French oven, microplane 3 (3 ½ ounces) bars bittersweet chocolate 1 small organic orange 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 3⁄4 cup dark brown sugar, firmly packed 3 tablespoons sugar 3 heaping tablespoons instant espresso powder 13 cups whole milk 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 ½ teaspoons almond extract 4 heaping tablespoons Hershey’s Special Dark cocoa powder 1 cup Grand Marnier Toppings Whipped cream Large chunk of white chocolate Bottle of Grand Marnier Marshmallows Cinnamon sticks

Prep Coarsely break up chocolate. Zest and juice the orange. Cook Toss broken chocolate, orange zest, cinnamon, brown sugar, sugar and espresso powder into the food processor and pulse until chocolate is broken down. Then process until everything is finely chopped. In the French oven, pour in the milk, vanilla extract, almond extract and orange juice and cook over medium heat until it just begins to simmer. Scrape in the contents from the food processor, add the cocoa powder and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and whisk for about 3-5 minutes, until melted and thoroughly combined. Whisk in the Grand Marnier. Taste, and add sugar or more Grand Marnier, if desired. Keep warm on the back burner on very low heat.

Presentation Set up the hot chocolate bar: Place a ladle to the side of the French oven. Have heatproof mugs arranged on the countertop. Next, place a bowl of whipped cream, a microplane with the chunk of white chocolate so guests can grate some on top of the whipped cream, an opened bottle of Grand Marnier for those who might like an extra splash in the bottom of their mug, a jar or bowl of marshmallows, and cinnamon sticks for stirring the drinks. Ideas and Suggestions Omit the Grand Marnier for an equally delicious alcoholfree version. For the holidays, serve with a bowl of candy canes for stirrers. Substitute peppermint schnapps and fresh mint leaves, spiced rum, Frangelico or Kahlúa for the Grand Marnier.
