A rendering of the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel and Conference Center, which will open late summer 2017.

COMING SOON New Hilton Garden Inn underway in Lebanon A new Hilton Garden Inn Hotel and Conference Center will open late this summer at 35 LaLombard St. in Lebanon. Plans call for a four-story, hotel featuring 100 double queen and king guest rooms. The design includes an 8,600square-foot flexible-space conference center with a 300-person capacity. Manchester-based Procon is the designer and builder, and XSS Hotels of Manchester is the developer. “Lebanon is a city in a great loca-

tion with a lot to offer visitors to the area,” said Partner XSS Hotels Mark Schleicher. “We are looking forward to providing a comfortable and affordable accommodation option that guests will enjoy and remember after they leave. Additionally, we feel that the first-class conference space attached to the hotel will be a welcome addition to the Upper Valley.” PROCON architects worked closely with the owners to design the Hilton Garden Inn to blend seamlessly with the traditional architecture of the surrounding area. In keeping with this, the exterior is comprised of a portecochere entry, flanked by a combination of brick veneer masonry and clap-

MAKING HISTORY UNH Hospitality Management Program celebrates 90 years The University of New Hampshire Hospitality Management Program — the second-oldest four-year degree program of its kind in the country — celebrated its 90th anniversary at the end of 2016. As part of the 90th Anniversary celebration, the program’s Life Time Achievement Award was presented to Lynne Dougherty ‘78, who had a successful and impactful career with Starwood Hotels and Resorts. “It takes real drive, passion, innovation, and leadership to make an impact. That is why Lynne was selected for this prestigious award,” said Nelson A. Barber, chair of the

board siding. Upon completion, parking will be available for 226 vehicles. The hotel and conference center are located near Dartmouth College as well as the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. However, future guests of the Hilton Garden Inn may also enjoy visiting the Dartmouth College Museum, the Lebanon Opera House, or the historic Shaker Museum, which is only 15 minutes away. The hotel will also incorporate environmentally-friendly elements, such as LED lighting throughout, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, Low-flow plumbing and Low VOC paints and adhesives. It is expected to be open to guests by the late summer of 2017.

Hospitality Management Program at UNH. The program was recently ranked by The Best Schools as 26th best hospitality program in the U.S. and 2nd in New England. It is part of the UNH Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics, which is ranked among the nation’s top 100 best undergraduate business schools and 38th for public business schools in the U.S. “I am very pleased that our hospitality management program also has been ranked for the first time among the top programs in the country,” said Deborah Merrill-Sand, dean of Paul College. The program is designed for graduates to develop into senior executives 15 to 20 years from graduation.

NHgrand.com and RideTheWilds.org provide visitor information NH Grand, the official visitor information resource for northern New Hampshire, has launched two new websites to attract, assist and guide those planning visits to the region.

NHgrand.com promotes attractions and activities, along with dining, lodging and retail properties throughout northern New Hampshire. RideTheWilds. org provides information on more than 1,000 miles of interconnected ATV trails, the only trail system of its kind in the Northeast. NHgrand.com features interactive maps, monthly featured properties, sample itineraries produced by local residents, an ongoing section of deals, directories of lodging, dining, and shopping properties, a detailed events calendar and much more. Users will also find an in-depth look at the area’s attractions, activities and renowned features, along with fresh photography and videos allowing prospective visitors to fully

educate themselves. “Part of what makes our region attractive is that many people have not experienced the unique activities and scenery we offer. These websites look to familiarize them with the region in a simple, straight-forward manner,” said NH Grand Marketing Manager Karl Stone. “NH’s Grand North feels far away once here, but in reality it is close to home for most of our guests and we need to convey that. Once a guest visits, they tend to visit regularly thanks to memorable experiences. These websites were designed to be vital planning tools, enabling those website visitors to enjoy their vacations to the fullest degree.” At RideTheWilds.org, there is information on where to park and access

trails, detailed trail maps, steps for registering your ATV in NH, where to find food and fuel along the trails, how to rent an ATV and options for taking a guided tour. The website project was made possible thanks to a grant from the Northern Border Regional Commission. The program looks to address the community and economic development needs of portions of Northern New England.

SPREADING THE WORD North Country marketing program unveiled The North Country Chamber of Commerce has entered into a three-year partnership with TotalScope Marketing of Plymouth with the goal of facilitating a destination marketing program for its membership and the region. The program will be a part of the chamber’s focus on marketing northern Coos County and bordering communities in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom as one destination with over 15 featured towns. The program, designed to be self-funded, will be facilitated by TotalScope and managed by a chamber-based Destination Marketing Committee, with the goal of increasing visitation to the region for extended stays. The first phase of the plan includes a retail discount card, with sales revenues to target future tourism marketing. “[The North Country program] is clearly driven to create sustainable funding which will then be invested wisely in further tourism marketing for the North Country,” says Scott Stephens of TotalScope. “While this program will be adding value beyond the usual economic impact, we see tourism as economic development. When we can bring quality guests to a region, it inevitably gets many to think about living and doing business here. Developing the right branding and sending the right strategic message about vacationing in the North Country is the same as marketing the region as a great place to live and work.” Partial funding for developing the plan was made possible by a Rural Business Development Grant through the Northern Community Investment Corp. from USDA Rural Development, the TransCanada Corporation, the Tillotson North Country Foundation and Indian Stream Health Center.

Historic hotels of New Hampshire’s White Mountains By Rick Broussard You might have heard that the Granite State is a great place to visit, but would you believe that modern American tourism was born in the mountains of New Hampshire? In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Northeast was America’s population center and industrial base. As cities grew congested and sooty with factory smoke, people sought relief in the clean air and rural reaches of the North — and no place was more pristine and beautiful than the mountainous climes of New Hampshire. The craggy vistas and wooded vastness of the area had long attracted celebrated painters such as the White

Mountain School of artists and famous writers including Henry David Thoreau and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Their talents spread the fame of the White Mountains and soon people in buggies and on trains flowed north to examine the spectacles for themselves. Farmhouses became inns and entrepreneurs began dotting the region with fine hotels laying the groundwork for a tourism industry that has grown and spread ever since. Since early vacationers might stay for a month or an entire summer, White Mountain area hotels were designed to provide both comfort and culture in the midst of remote wilderness. The larger, “Grand Hotels” sometimes were compared to luxury ocean liners for their lavish variety of offerings.

Omni Mount Washington Resort Most of the original hotels of the White Mountains have been lost to time, but those that remain preserve that historic spirit of hospitality and adventure. Flagship of the surviving fleet of land-bound ocean liners is the Omni Mt. Washington Resort, originally opened in 1902. Today, the resort maintains the charm and glamour of the Gilded Age alongside comfy wellequipped rooms with Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Year-round hospitality includes winter skiing and snowboarding in Bretton Woods, the state’s largest ski area, plus a Donald Ross-designed golf course, luxurious spa and nine high-flying zip lines.

The Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa The Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa in Whitefield was born in 1865 after a coach carrying travelers from Montreal overturned. Two passengers were taken in by a friendly farm couple — William and Mary Jane Dodge. Their overnight stay turned into a week of nature walks to survey breathtaking skylines after feasting on Mrs. Dodge’s delicious home-cooked breakfasts. The humble farmhouse is long gone, but the welcoming warmth remains. The Mountain View Grand is now a sprawling contemporary resort with a commitment to sustainability, symbolized by the 121-foot wind turbine that provides a percentage of the hotel’s electrical power. 8

The Wentworth Also drenched in history is the Wentworth in Jackson, near some of the region’s most storied trails for cross-country skiing. This 50-room hotel, which bills itself as an elegant “country inn,” was built in 1869 by landholder Joshua Trickey as a wedding present for his daughter. The reputation for romance continues and this inn is a most popular wedding destination in the Mt. Washington Valley.

Welcome to the world of bleisure The trend is growing of adding leisure time to the business trip By Franc Jeffrey Business travel was never designed to be fun. Very often you find yourself rushing to an airport, getting off in another city, jumping in a cab, going to a hotel, meeting in the hotel’s conference room, jumping back in a cab, and the next thing you know you are sitting in the office. You may have just visited one of the most beautiful, culture-rich cities in the world, and never even knew it. But the times they are-a changin’. Many people who 10

need to travel on business are becoming “bleisure” travelers, a term used to define professionals who mix vacation — or leisure — time with business. According to a BridgeStreet Global Hospitality report, 60 percent of travelers reported having taken bleisure trips, with 30 percent adding at least two additional days to their trip. Respondents said they do this because it limits the stress associated with business travel, making them more relaxed when away from home. And sometime it’s just to enjoy the city they are traveling to.

MEETINGS & CONVENTION PLANNER 2017

An advantage On a business trip, Caroline Michaud, a PR executive for a hotel group, opted not to do the traditional first plane out after finishing a business meeting in London. Instead she took the last flight out so she would have time to visit the National Portrait Gallery and Buckingham Palace. “I’m always seeing how you can stretch the trip,” she said. Even if it just means six extra hours in a city, she wants to do it. “You don’t have to stay extra nights to get the real feel of a city,” she said. As a travel management company, we are seeing increasing amounts of clients extending their trips, and bleisure is fast becoming a way of life for the business traveler. Many see extending their work trips as a perk of the job. We find that when a business trip is extended with family or friends, the burden of travel is lessened and can make employees more willing to travel in the first place. We also have clients advising us that bleisure trips can be advantageous to the company as a whole, with staff gaining better knowledge of a city and its culture being good for business. In a survey of international travelers published last year, 60 percent said they’ve taken bleisure trips, usually adding two vacation days to work-related travel. Nearly half of them did so on most occasions, and six out of 10 said they were more likely to take bleisure trips today than they were five years ago. “It makes the stress of business travel more bearable,” says Stuart Bruce, a British public relations adviser whose work frequently takes him all over the world. According to the BridgeStreet survey, bleisure travelers are almost evenly split male and female, with most falling into the 45- to 54-year-old age group. More importantly, the second largest group was 25- to 35-year-olds, representing Millennials. This always-on, app-connected generation is more apt to deploy a business-mixed-with-pleasure mindset. Tuned in to technology, they get comfortable in unfamiliar surroundings by using apps and social media to navigate, make connections, and choose restaurants.

Who pays? Regardless of age bleisure travel continues to grow: 60 percent of BridgeStreet respondents were more likely to take a bleisure trip now than they were five years ago, and 94 percent stated they do so to gain cultural experiences and to explore the cities they travel to on business. Additionally, almost 55 percent of bleisure travelers bring family members with them, while about 29 percent said they haven’t yet, but would like to or are planning to. With all this in mind, it’s evident that bleisure travel is very much becoming part of the business travel world, but how is it managed? We’re still finding that many corporate travel policies don’t allow for gray areas such as bleisure. The biggest questions are — who pays for the extra nights’ hotel accommodation and the flights home? This all goes back to having a clear and concise travel policy and making sure it covers bleisure activity, otherwise extending business trips for bleisure would have to be decided by management on a case-by-case basis and you run into the danger of a staff member feeling slighted that

their bleisure trip isn’t paid for while another staff member. But, as a business, what do you need to consider? First of all, if your staff is on business they would have to fly home anyway, so we would always advise that travel policies state the flights home are paid for by the business, as long as there is no substantial increase in price. Accommodation costs are usually the main issue, however we find these are usually negated by cheaper “offpeak” weekend flights — for instance, business flights on a busy Friday night usually come at a premium, whereas on a Sunday afternoon these flights are cheaper and most businesses are happy to offset this cost on the extra nights’ hotel accommodation cost. Each company has its own policy for adding on personal time. “It’s one of these gray areas,” said Greeley Koch, executive director at the Association of Corporate Travel Executives, in a recent New York Times interview. “It really comes down to the culture of the company.” Some companies tend to discourage adding on vacation days. Others encourage it, if only to help employees overcome jet lag and be more effective while they work on the road. Taking it a step further, some companies even use the business-trip extension as a recruiting tool. Corporations are “absolutely fighting for talent in high-growth industries,” said Nick Vournakis of Carlson Wagonlit, and a flexible travel policy can be used as a way to “attract and retain employees.”

Corporate buzzword The practice does carry risks for companies, which are increasingly responsible for the safety of their employees whether they are working or at leisure on a business trip. It’s an area of law called duty of care. As Adam Anolik, a lawyer who handles corporate travel, told the New York Times, “Many courts have been extending the employer’s duty of care further and further.” Employers are advised, for example, to warn business travelers of any known dangers in the immediate vicinity of their business travel in case those dangers are encountered on leisure or tacked-on time. In addition, some countries have adopted stringent employer duty-of-care legislation or case law precedents that generally apply to that company’s employees traveling in other countries. That being said, it is important to work with a travel management company that knows not only the rules governing travel in each country, but where the “hot spots” are that should be avoided should an employee decide to “extend” his business trip. All indications are that bleisure will continue to be a corporate buzzword, particularly as business travelers start to skew younger and younger. But no matter the age of the business traveler, more and more will be looking to roll some pleasure into the workload, which means businesses have to not only adapt to this trend but also turn it to their advantage when recruiting new workers and attempting to retain current ones. So you’re going to present? Don’t sweat it The first thing to do is ask yourself the best way to engage your audience By John Graham Most of us have one of two common, but quite opposite, reactions after making a presentation. We either think it went very well or we did a lousy job. Such responses are certainly understandable since presentations are highly personal. When speaking before large or small groups, we put ourselves on the line — there’s no place to hide. How many times have you heard someone say, “I should have done better, but I didn’t have enough time to prepare,” “I wasn’t feeling well,” “The dog ate my presentation,” “I’m just not good at this” or “My personal style is better in one-on-one situations.” Then there are those who never doubt their ability, believing they’re better presenters than they actually are. If they hear criticism, they quickly dismiss it: “That guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” There’s plenty of available advice on how to be a more effective pre12

senter, but “telling” us what to do usually isn’t much help. A better approach is gaining insight by asking the right questions. Here are 10 questions that can be helpful in preparing to present for almost any speaking occasion, from a large group to a oneon-one setting:

• Why am I making this presentation? Or, to say it another way, what do I want to accomplish? Most presentations fail because speakers lack a well-defined understanding of what they want their listeners to do. If this isn’t clear to the presenter, the participants will be confused, bored and feel they are wasting their time.

• What does my audience want to hear? Too many presenters find themselves in trouble (and don’t even know it) by focusing on what they want to say, almost to the exclusion of the participants. Someone has said that a good presentation is a compromise between what the speaker wants to say and

MEETINGS & CONVENTION PLANNER 2017

what the audience wants to hear. Viewing those who listen to us as our “customers” is critical. In effect, they’re the ones who judge the success or failure of a presentation. This is a tough task, requiring considerable discipline. As presenters we’re often so intent on “delivering our message,” we lose sight of getting our message across to our “customers.”

• How can I hold my listeners’ interest? The best way is to use stories, stories, stories. A 93-year old family friend, Ruthie, tells of taking her 7-year old grandson to McDonald’s on one occasion. She was surprised when he didn’t order French fries. “I thought you really liked them,” she said. “I did, but not since they put potatoes in them,” he replied. He knew them as “French fries,” not French fried potatoes. What a great story to help make the point that shortcuts often lead to unintended consequences. While inexperienced presenters inundate their listeners with words, the pros tell stories.

• How should I go about holding everyone’s attention? The answer is to invite them to participate in your presentation, something that isn’t as risky as it may sound. You can let them know at the beginning that you want them to ask questions or make comments during the presentation by raising their hands. They need to know that they’ll not be interrupting you. Yes, there may be a smart remark or two, an irrelevant comment or question, but it’s worth it to create an open atmosphere that lets everyone know that this is a “we” and not “me” event.

• How can I avoid having a case of nerves? It may seem a bit crazy, but nerves are normal. Whenever you put yourself on the line — from playing a sport to getting married to buying a home or making a presentation — it involves having “a case of nerves.” Nerves are not only normal, but embracing them can improve your presentation. They send the message that we’re putting ourselves at risk and it’s time to rise to the occasion. Audiences feel this; they sense the energy. And as we start, we tend to come to an equilibrium that let’s us take control and move forward.

• How should I go about organizing my material? There are a variety of “formats,” but “ProblemSolution” is one of the best because it works well in just about any situation. If your topic is “The Need to Reorganize Our Company’s Sales Regions,” the first step is to discuss the reasons why the reorg is necessary: the current arrangement is inefficient, too costly, doesn’t provide a competitive advantage, and isn’t producing the desired results. The goal in the “problem” portion is to gain the listeners’ support for your analysis. Once your case for change is made, it’s time for your “solution.” Here is where you show how your recommendations overcome each of the points presented “problem” portion. At that point, you will have won the listeners to your viewpoint.

• How can I be sure I’m properly introduced? This isn’t a minor point. The person introducing you should set the stage for your presentation;

it’s your “sendoff.” It’s a mistake to assume that you will be introduced properly. As a presenter, you are responsible for ensuring that the introduction makes it clear you have earned the right to speak to them. To make sure the introduction creates the desired impression, experienced speakers often provide a prepared introduction that can be used as is or as a guide. Even so, presenters should always begin with a brief “self-introduction” that subtly expresses why you have been selected to speak. If this seems a bit gutsy, just remember that a poor introduction hurts your presentation.

• How should I prepare for a presentation? No presenter is ever totally prepared, even after giving the same talk numerous times. Some speakers write out every word, and there’s no substitute for getting it down in writing and then editing it. One presenter didn’t begin speaking extemporaneously (prepared but not

• Should I use screens? The one word answer is sparingly, recognizing that screens turn into a crutch most of the time. What’s projected is not your presentation. At best, PowerPoint screens should only support your message. If a screen can help clarify a point, use it. If it can enhance the viewers’ experience, include it. If a screen doesn’t pass this test, delete it. In effect, a presentation should never, ever be PowerPoint-dependent. • What should I do if something goes wrong? The lights go out, the projector fails, the sound system quits, noise from the next room distracts the participants, the previous presenters run over and, just before you go on, the chairperson asks you to cut your time slot in half. All of these (and others) can happen. I know, because they’ve happened to me — fortunately not at the same time. Something can and will go wrong, and it’s a disconcerting experience, to say the least. So plan for it. And

A good presentation is a compromise between what the speaker wants to say and what the audience wants to hear. Remember, the audience is the judge. using notes) until he had spent nearly two decades writing his speeches word-for-word. A compromise approach can be helpful. To make certain the opening of the presentation grabs attention and clarifies your purpose in speaking, it should be written out. And so should the various transitions, so you move smoothly and clearly from one point to the next. Above all, it’s essential that the conclusion be written. It’s your last few sentences that determine a presentation’s destiny, up or down. Those who say “I’ve gone over it in my head” are headed for failure. Making an outline is helpful in the initial development of a presentation, but doesn’t help with precise word choice, which is the difference between an adequate presentation and an exceptional one.

the best way to get ready is to think about the unthinkable by asking “what if” questions. For example, what if a storm hit and the event is canceled? The next day you could send everyone a copy of your presentation. Whether the conditions are good or bad, you’re still the presenter. So, always be ready to make lemonade. Making presentations is a combination of art and discipline that has but one goal: to do everything possible to convey your message as successfully as possible. And that starts by asking the right questions. John R. Graham of GrahamComm is a marketing and sales consultant and business writer. He publishes a free monthly eNewsletter. What’s the point? As Americans pack their luggage and head off on summer vacations, there is one thing they are likely leaving home: their hotel and airline rewards points. While a majority of Americans (58 percent) say that using their credit or debit card to earn travel reward points makes financial sense, few of them are actually taking advantage of those perks to save on their hotel and airline costs. That’s according to a new telephone survey of 1,012 U.S. adults conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of the American Institute of CPAs. In fact, the survey found that Americans are just as likely to incur additional expenses from their vacations as reap the rewards of the points they’ve earned. In their lifetime, 15 percent of Americans have paid for part or all of their trip with rewards points, compared to 14 percent who say they’ve taken a trip that has resulted in a credit card balance that could not be paid off by their next statement. A total of 12 percent say they have opened a credit card in order to obtain hotel or airline rewards while 6 percent have selected a more expensive flight or hotel to earn travel rewards points and 6 percent have taken a trip just to maintain or upgrade a rewards level. Despite those efforts, only 7 percent of all Americans used rewards points to pay for any part of their last vacation – with only 1 percent paying for their entire trip using points. “When chasing after elite status with hotels and airlines, it’s important to not lose sight of the fact that miles and points often have a dollar value associated with them,” said CPA Gregory Anton, chair of the AICPA’s National CPA Financial Literacy Commission. “Spending extra money in hopes of earning free nights and flights has the very real potential to leave Americans feeling like they’ve been travel hacked when their credit card payments are due.” Indeed, according the AICPA, in the last year alone, 14 percent of all Americans have suffered the negative financial consequences from their vacation travel, with 12

percent carrying a balance or paying interest on their credit card, three percent missing a payment or being charged a late fee and two percent going over the spending limit on their credit card while on vacation. The survey also found a disconnect between the card features people said were most important and their knowledge of those features. Such a cavalier attitude toward the specifics of their credit situation may be the reason why nearly one-in-10 Americans have been denied a loan or paid a higher interest rate on a loan due to a poor credit score in the past year alone, said the AICPA. The National CPA Financial Literacy Commission offers the following advice to take advantage of credit card rewards:

• Don’t overspend to earn travel rewards. While a free flight or hotel room can be tempting, the rewards may not be worth the pain if you end up paying interest and penalties on unpaid balances. And if you earn a free flight, for example, keep in mind there are vacation-related expenses such as hotel, meals, and sightseeing that could strain your budget.

• Pick a card that fits your needs. Before applying for a credit card for travel rewards, determine what is most important to you. If flexibility is your goal, seek cards that allow users to transfer points between companies, such as hotels and airlines, and between family members. If you frequently travel internationally, cards that waive foreign transaction fees, which are often as high as 3 percent, could be helpful for you.

• Look for cards with big signup bonuses. Your credit score could take a hit if you open too many credit cards in a short period of time, so choose carefully when applying for cards. Therefore, try to find cards that have large signup bonuses, which is increasingly important since many programs are requiring more points to earn rewards. It’s even better if you earn rewards with one purchase or a fairly low spending threshold. If you have to sign up for several cards to earn bonuses, you may have to overspend to earn them.

MEETINGS & CONVENTION PLANNER 2017

The Seven Regions of NH New Hampshire is made up of seven very different regions, each as exciting as the next. The Seacoast, Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee, Lakes Region, Merrimack Valley, Monadnock Region, White Mountains and Great North Woods are filled with natural beauty, cultural events and classic New England living. It’s one family vacation idea after another, and the only way to truly appreciate it all is to see it for yourself. Use the list at left to learn more about each of New Hampshire’s distinct, yet equally unforgettable, regions.

 GREAT NORTH WOODS

 DARTMOUTH-LAKE SUNAPEE

Halfway between the Equator and the North Pole, the Great North Woods is at once rugged and inviting. This is where travelers over the centuries have come in search of beauty, adventure and inspiration, while enjoying legendary North Woods hospitality. Here is where you can go take a hike to watch the sunrise before breakfast, go fly fishing after lunch and get dressed up for an elegant dinner at a grand hotel. Whatever your passion, from fine dining to snowmobiling to camping under the stars, the Great North Woods is a destination in which to indulge it.

If only one region of New Hampshire could be known as a study in contrasts, it would be the Dartmouth - Lake Sunapee Region. Named for Dartmouth Hanover’s Ivy League college - and Sunapee - the crystal clear lake, State Park, and mountain, all of the same name - the region includes quiet country roads and rolling farmland, pristine lakes, a bustling hub of higher education and medicine, and some of today’s favorite family activities and recreation.

 MONADNOCK REGION

 WHITE MOUNTAINS If one New Hampshire region is synonymous with recreation, it’s the White Mountains. 48 4,000 foot peaks are found here, along with the highest mountain in the Northeast, 6,288-foot Mt. Washington; but it is the 800,000-acre White Mountain National Forest that truly shapes the region.

For the New England of picture books, you need go no further than the Monadnock Region. Here you’ll find small villages where white clapboard churches and town halls edge manicured town greens. Rolling fields with neatly planted rows quilt the hillsides, and country roads lined by rock walls invite exploration at a leisurely pace.

 MERRIMACK VALLEY

LAKES REGION

The Lakes Region: the name alone stirs memories of blissful, sunny days spent on the water, the joy of vacations, boat rides and camp, when everything moved at a slow summer simmer; and you connected with people and places that still resonate within you today. Summer may be the Lakes Region’s bestknown season, but wrap the hillsides in spring green, the blazing colors of fall or a thick blanket of snow, and it is every bit as magical. While there are 273 lakes and ponds in the Lakes Region, one lake dominates them all: Lake Winnipesaukee.

In New Hampshire, where the capital’s name - Concord is a synonym for harmony, it’s not surprising to find music and the performing visual arts central to life in the city and the entire Merrimack Valley Region. The state’s three largest cities - Concord, Manchester, and Nashua - have an especially rich cultural life, with a variety of offerings year-round.

 

 SEACOAST

New Hampshire’s seacoast captures the essence of New England’s oceanfront. In just 18 miles of coastline, there are long, sandy beaches, working ports, offshore islands, surf-stung rocks, and popular resort towns and villages that date back nearly four hundred years. Many visitors begin their tours of New Hampshire along the coast, drawn by the sound and scent of the sea, and intrigued by all the region offers.
