The McLean Community Center

Who We Are, What We Do The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District 1ADranesville). Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio and a classroom/commercial kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings with a nominal charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available in the lobby. The Center also operates the award-winning OldÂ Firehouse Teen Center, located at 1440 Chain BridgeÂ Rd. in downtown McLean.

CENTER NEWS McLEAN COMMUNITY CENTER 2017-2018 GOVERNING BOARD ELECTION

The Governing Board and staff of the McLean Community Center strongly encourage all qualified residents to vote for members of the McLean Community Center’s 2017-2018 Governing Board. Your vote sends a very important message of your support of the Center’s programs and services. When & Where: Vote between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the McLean Day 2017 festival on Saturday, May 20, at Lewinsville Park, 1659 Chain Bridge Rd. Requirements to Vote:

1. You must be a resident of the McLean Community Center tax district (Dranesville Small District 1A); however, you need not be registered to vote in the general election. 2. You must be at least 18 years old to vote for an adult candidate. Adults may vote for up to three candidates. Teens turning 18 on or before McLean Day may only vote for adult candidates. 3. You must be 15 through 17 years old by McLean Day to vote for youth candidates. Youth voters have two votes, and may vote for one candidate in the Langley High School boundary area, and one candidate in the McLean High School boundary area. Youth voters may not vote for more than one candidate in the same boundary area. 4. You must bring identification and proof of residency, such as a driver’s license. If you do not have identification, you may sign a sworn statement.

One of the truly remarkable things about getting together with my old friends, no matter what directions our lives have taken us, is that we can agree that we loved growing up in McLean. There may have been hardships and challenges—growing up is like that, but McLean, and all its resources, made it culturally rich, invigorating and nurturing. I am a mother of three children under the age of five, who moved to McLean years ago so my family could be part of this incredible community and school system. I know firsthand the value MCC has brought to this community, and I’d like to play a central role in its advancement by strengthening and varying its programs for children and adults, and helping deliver the upcoming renovation. I am running for a seat on the McLean Community Center board because I care deeply about the community. My family has been residents of McLean since 2003 and my wife and daughters grew up in McLean. We are supporters of the McLean Project for the Arts, I have served for the last five years on the board of the Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce and when my children were younger, I was a coach for McLean Youth Soccer and McLean basketball. I am excited by the prospect of giving back to our beautiful community and serving on MCC’s Board of Directors. Alicia Plerhoples

I am an educator, nonprofit lawyer, wife and mother. My family regularly visits the McLean Community Center, where my daughters take dance classes and we attend performances at The Alden. I would like to contribute my legal expertise to the Governing Board. I am law professor at Georgetown Law, where I teach an experiential course. My students and I represent small businesses and nonprofits (including arts and community nonprofits) on legal issues, such as contracts, financing, leasing, employment law, licensing and permitting. Julie Waters

As a board member, I’ll work hard to continue growing our community. I am an attorney and served in the active Army for 12 years. When I left active service, my husband and I were thrilled to find McLean and make it our long-term home. In the Army, I gained experience in leadership, criminal and administrative law, and working with a team. I now stay home with our two children during the day and serve in the Army Reserve. I am running for the Board because I care about this community. I have spent the last seven years in McLean, and I am convinced of our area’s responsibility to reach out to and provide for our residents. I serve on a leadership team at my church, and try to lead by example when I run for track or play in the band at Langley. Hello, my name is Brian and I am a student at Langley High School. I am running for a position on the Governing Board to become an active member of my community. I have had previous experiences as a campaign organizer at the Fairfax County Democratic Committee and as an intern and advisor for the medical board at Sejong Geriatric Hospital. At Langley, I am a member of the Debate Team and Varsity Golf Team. I’m a junior attending McLean High School and am proud to live in this community. I’m a student leader in marching and symphonic band, a track and field runner, and a Girl Scout completing my Gold Award. I’d like to serve on the board to provide a youth perspective on the policies the board sets, keeping McLean and Langley kids’ best interests in mind. I’ve used the community center for classes, acted in plays at The Alden and attended events at MCC. Vote for me and I will help to make it a better place for McLean kids and teens! Nolan Fitzsimmons

My desire to serve on the MCC Board comes from wanting to help our community as much as possible. My community involvement includes volunteering for three years to help run Chess Clubs at Colvin Run Elementary School and Kent Garden ES; volunteering for Chesterbrook Assisted Living Home; and starting/running the McLean HS Chess Club. I earned the Presidential Gold Medal for Volunteering and am pursing The Congressional Award. I’m a MHS Cross Country member and have a black belt in Taekwondo. I currently go to McLean High School and I’ve attended Franklin Sherman Elementary, Haycock Elementary and Longfellow Middle School. I have had the pleasure of growing up in this wonderfully supportive and friendly community, and have been a beneficiary of the shows, events and exhibitions that the McLean Community Center has so generously provided. Now, I feel that it is my time to give back. As a musician, I know firsthand the positive effects that the arts have on our community. I want to make sure that throughout the Ingleside renovation, the McLean Community Center institution will continue to educate, entertain and inspire us. Center News MCC RECOGNIZES THAMIR AL’HASHIMI WITH 2016 OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD

Prizes were presented by MCC Governing Board Chair Laurelie B. Wallace and The Alden’s Director of Youth Theatre Programs Danielle Van Hook. The James C. Macdonald Performing Arts Scholarship Competition encourages artistic achievement and promotes study in the arts by high school students who reside or attend school in the McLean district (Small Tax District 1A, Dranesville). Scholarship prizes of $1,200 are awarded to students placing first in each of four categories: Dance, Instrumental Music, Theatre and Vocal Music. Secondplace winners are awarded $800 and third-place winners win $400. This year’s winners are:

MCC Board member Kat Kehoe, MCC Executive Director George Sachs, MCC Board member Merilee Pierce, Awardee Thamir Al’Hashimi, MCC Board member Paul Kohlenberger, MCC Board Chair Laurelie Wallace and MCC Board member Desi Woltman.

Thamir Al’Hashimi, a longtime community leader and volunteer, has been awarded the McLean Community Centers’ (MCC) top honor for volunteers, the 2016 H. Gordon Randall Outstanding Volunteer Service Award. The award was presented at the Center’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on Saturday, March 18. In presenting the award, MCC Executive Director George Sachs said, “For years, Mr. Al’Hashimi has demonstrated his commitment and compassion as an ambassador to the McLean community and the McLean Community Center through a variety of actions. For more than 20 years, Al’Hashimi has been a faithful board member of the Friends of McLean Community Center, a nonprofit fundraising organization that supports the Center.

The competition began with a preliminary audition in midMarch and culminated in a final competition on stage at The Alden at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29.

IN MEMORIAM Longtime “Voice of McLean Day” Tommy Lukas 8/13/29-2/5/17 The Center was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Tommy Lukas. Tommy and his wife Carol were longtime volunteers at the Center. Tommy received the H. Gordon Randall Outstanding Volunteer Service Award for 2005. For many years, Tommy was well-known for serving as master of ceremonies for the McLean Day stage, introducing performers in his signature top hat and tails. We are forever grateful for the years of dedicated service this retired U.S. Navy Captain provided to his community.

This juried exhibition will feature work by artists from the midAtlantic region who make work

by using paint, the process of painting, combining painting with other materials, or focusing on painting, as a concept. A broad array of styles and approaches will be featured.

McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) is a nonprofit organization that presents the visual arts program for the community at the McLean Community Center (MCC), thanks to a public/private partnership with MCC and Fairfax County. MPA presents exhibitions of contemporary art in three galleries and provides education in the visual arts through a program of classes for children and adults, as well as lectures, tours and ArtReach, an outreach program that brings school children and other groups to the gallery for educational programs. The McLean 5K Run is coming back this fall! Hosted by MCC with the support of sponsors Century 21 New Millennium and The Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce, the race features a certified course through the heart of McLean and is designed to appeal to runners of all abilities. In addition to great exercise, the event will promote Public Safety Appreciation and serve as an opportunity to express appreciation and respect for the first responders from McLean Volunteer Fire Department and McLean District Police Station. The proceeds from McLean 5K Run will benefit the McLean Community Foundation (MCF), so recruit a team of coworkers, teammates, neighbors and friends and mark the calendar for Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017.

SUNDAY, OCT. 22-WEDNESDAY, OCT. 25, 2017 Come and relive the glories of the past and present in Newport this fall when the foliage should be spectacular! Enjoy a stroll along cobblestone streets or oceanfront walks, revel in the magnificence of the world-famous Gilded Age mansions and feast on the finest Marble House dining room, featuring pink cuisine New England Numidian marble and gilt bronze accents. has to offer. For three days, we will be touring some of the most fabulous estates in the United States: The Breakers – built by Cornelius Vanderbilt; Rosecliff – location for the movie “The Great Gatsby”; Marble House – the most expensive and ornate of the summer mansions; and The Elms – modeled after a French chateau. Day 1 We will travel by motor coach to Rhode Island. Upon our arrival, there will be time to relax at our hotel, the Newport Marriott. Located conveniently on Newport Harbor, this will be our home for three days. We will arrive late Sunday afternoon and have dinner at the Marriott that evening.

Day 2 We will begin with breakfast at the hotel, then take a narrated driving tour of the famous Ocean Drive where many of the most beautiful private residences can be found. We will tour Marble House, owned by William Vanderbilt and designed by noted architect, William Morris Hunt. Lunch will be at the White Horse Tavern, America’s oldest, continuously run eating establishment, which opened in 1687. We will then tour The Breakers, owned by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, son of “the Commodore,” America’s richest man.

McLean Traveler Dinner on Monday night will be on our own. You may choose from several options that are right on the harbor, close to our hotel. Day 3 After breakfast at the hotel, we will tour The Elms. Owned by coal baron Edward J. Berwind, the mansion is modeled after an 18th century chateau outside of Paris. We The Elms, viewed from its great lawn. will have lunch at La Forge, located in the old Newport Casino and now part of the International Tennis Hall of Fame property. After lunch, we will have a guided tour of the Tennis Hall of Fame where the first U.S. National Tennis Championship was held in 1881. Our last Newport mansion will be Rosecliff, which was commissioned by Nevada silver heiress, Theresa Fair Oerichs. Dinner that night will be at the Moorings on Narragansett Bay which has elevated the Newport dining experience.

Day 4 On our way home, we will stop in Mystic, Connecticut, to see the famed Mystic Seaport. This unique museum is totally dedicated to the sea and all things maritime. It was founded in 1929 to save the rapidly disappearing artifacts of America’s seafaring past. A box lunch will be provided on our way home, as we remember the history, gourmet dining and beauty of Newport, Rhode Island, in October.

Camps for Children FISHING CAMP PROGRAMS

All skill levels of anglers are welcome. Fish and Explore camps are travel camps. Each day, we transport campers to a new location to discover the wonders of the outdoors. We will provide all gear and necessary equipment for each camp. This will include fishing rods, tackle, lures and bait. Fish and Explore will provide transportation for all camps. Lifejackets will be supplied and required while on a boat or in the water. Bring lunch, snack, a change of clothes, sneakers or river shoes and a towel. SCULPTURE: 2D AND 3D CREATION

Art: Construct your own crazy creatures, zany structures, imaginary machines and moveable mobiles working with clay, wire, plastic, different papers and up-cycled found materials. Through spatial problem-solving and experimenting with different textures and mixed media, you will experiment with 2D and 3D assemblage methods to add to, subtract from and expand your creations. ANCIENT TO MODERN MYTHS

Art: Draw, print, collage, paint and construct your way through ancient and modern-day lore and folktales from across the world, including Roman, Greek, Celtic, Native American and Eastern traditions. Learn how colors have different meanings depending on the culture and practice proportion and rendering techniques with your subjects. Discover stories and imagery inspired from these different cultures, which will inspire you to create your own legendary tales through 2D and 3D art with your own mythological characters and settings. Coding: Inspired by a folktale you discussed at MPA or want to create one of your own? Remix it using Scratch and Minecraft mods! Recreate the characters, write your own story and build quizzes with fun facts and questions to ask your friends and family. Top it off by creating your version of the items and potions used in your favorite ancient legends and introducing them in your Minecraft world.

Art: Develop an understanding of the fundamentals of art while drawing and painting with various materials, focusing on observation, value, texture, color, realism and abstraction. Art: Who is a hero in your life or imagination? What despicable traits does a villain possess? Craft a fantastic adventure story this week as you learn about character development, storyboarding, emotion and expression, and storytelling through images. Fly through drawing, painting, collaging and 3D construction as you create your settings and characters, both good and bad, to fuel your saga. Coding: Bring your characters to life through coding! Use the Scratch programming language to create characters and have them move, talk and interact in their own digital world. INTRO TO GRAPHIC DESIGN

MPA’s Classical Drawing and Painting Program for Teens VOSLER YOUNG ARTISTS’ STUDIO @ MPA For any young artist with the desire to learn classical drawing. No previous experience is necessary. This workshop will introduce the young artist to a classical atelier program of instruction. Students will draw a variety of pictures in charcoal throughout the week including copy work from the late 19th century BargueGerome Drawing Course, culminating in a session with a live model on Friday. The Bargue drawings this year will include different content on the human skull and muscles of the face and neck. Students will have at least two finished portfolio drawings by the end of the week, and parents and families are encouraged to attend the closing certificate ceremony on Friday. During lunch, guest artists will be invited to speak to the students. Students will learn to draw through direct observation led by master instructor, Kerry Vosler. All materials provided. Summer 2017 Classes – Visual Art PAINTING: COLOR THEORY

This class will change the way you observe the world around you and approach your painting! Learn the properties of color, including hue, value and saturation and how to mix and apply color effectively. We’ll build our knowledge of color usage from color wheels and concepts such as atmospheric perspective and the surprising emotional and psychological aspects of color. Instructor: Naomi Chung.

Open to students of all levels. Discover the versatility and fluidity of this medium. Loosen up and learn to achieve glowing and beautiful colors. We will fall in love with our drawing tools by exploring all the different media available to us, including different pencil weights, charcoal, paper types and more. Registration Processing EASY WAYS TO REGISTER

• Online Just click on the green “Register” button in the upper right corner of any page of our website, or on a seven-digit activity number, which will link you to our online registration system. Online registration begins at midnight on the registration start date. • Mail/Fax Mail a completed registration form with payment in the form of a check, money order or credit card to: McLean Community Center, Attn: Registrar, 6631 Old Dominion Dr., McLean VA 22101. Completed forms may be faxed to 703‑653-9435. • In Person/Drop Off You may register in person at the Registration Office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. At other times, drop a completed registration form and payment (in the form of a check or money order, or by completing the credit card information on the form) into the registration boxes located at the registration desk or administrative offices.

REGISTRATION BEGINS

• Registration begins on Monday, May 8, for MCC tax district residents; Registration begins on Monday, May 15, for all others. • All mail-in and drop-off registration forms received before the designated registration date will be processed on the designated date. • Instructors may not accept registrations or extend verbal commitments.

PAYMENT

• Payment is due at the time of registration in the form of a check, money order or credit card (American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa) number with expiration date. If paying by check, please make payable to McLean Community Center, unless otherwise noted. • Receipt confirmations will be emailed. If no email address is provided, receipt confirmations will be mailed.

SENIOR DISCOUNTS

• Senior citizens (age 60 and older) are eligible to receive a ten (10) percent discount on classes except where noted. • Senior discounts are not available for tours and other activities.

MATERIALS FEE

• All materials fees are due to the instructor on the first day of class, unless otherwise noted.

CLASS AND ACTIVITY REFUND POLICY

• All withdrawals, refund and cancellation requests must be submitted in writing to registrar@mcleancenter.org. • Patrons who submit refund requests 14 days or more before the start date of a class or activity, will be granted a refund, minus a $25 processing fee. Refunds requested less than 14 days before the start date of the class or activity will not be granted.

SUMMER CAMP REFUND POLICY

• The Center will issue a full refund when a camp program is canceled by the Center. • All withdrawals, refund and cancellation requests must be submitted in writing to registrar@mcleancenter.org. • Request for withdrawals/cancellations before April 3, 2017 — Patrons will receive a full refund. • Request for withdrawals/cancellations after April 3, 2017 — Patrons will be charged a $100 processing fee which will be deducted from the total amount paid. They will receive a refund for the remaining amount. • If a replacement can be found to fill the space vacated by the cancellation/ withdrawal, the $100 processing fee will be refunded to the patron. • If a replacement cannot be found, a refund will not be issued.

RESTRICTIONS

• Once a class, camp or activity is in session, refunds may be granted only for medical reasons or for extenuating circumstances as determined by the General Programs Director and the Registrar. Medical requests must be accompanied by a doctor’s note (verification).

ABSENCES FROM CLASS

• Absences and personal scheduling conflicts are not reimbursable. • The Center is not obligated to make up classes due to absences and personal scheduling conflicts. However, each instructor has her/his own make-up policy; arrangements for make-up classes are scheduled through individual instructors. Please do not contact the Center.
