The McLean Community Center

Who We Are, What We Do The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District 1A-Dranesville). Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio and a classroom/commercial kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings with a nominal charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available in the lobby. The Center also operates the award-winning OldÂ Firehouse Teen Center, located at 1440 Chain BridgeÂ Rd. in downtown McLean.

McLEAN COMMUNITY CENTER’S 2017–2018 GOVERNING BOARD ELECTION RESULTS; NEW BOARD MEMBERS APPOINTED BY FAIRFAX COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS Five McLean tax district residents have won seats on the McLean Community Center’s 2017-2018 Governing Board. The election was held from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, at the McLean Day 2017 festival at Lewinsville Park. Successful candidates took their seats on the MCC Governing Board at its meeting on Wednesday, June 7.

MCC 2017–2018 GOVERNING BOARD TAKES PLEDGE OF SERVICE, ELECTS OFFICERS

Members of the incoming McLean Community Center Governing Board met for the first time on Wednesday, June 7, and elected officers for the 2017-2018 Board year. The Center is one of only two Fairfax County community centers funded by residents of a special tax district. Supervisor John W. Foust led all members of the board as they took a first-ever annual pledge of service, which was followed by a pledge signing ceremony. Members pledged to support the mission of the Center and Executive Director George Sachs and to comply with applicable laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and Fairfax County Ordinances, among other tenents. The new board then held its first meeting and elected officers by acclamation for the year. Laurelie Wallace was re-elected chair of the board for a second year; Paul Kohlenberger was elected vice-chair. Desi Woltman was elected secretary and Merrily Pierce was elected treasurer. The approximately $5 million project includes the renovation of the existing meeting rooms, community hall, lobby, rehearsal hall and administration area, as well as a 7,500-square-foot new wing on the south side, between the community hall and the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio. It will add a new board room, a multi-purpose room, a conference room and restrooms. The project also entails the creation of an enclosed outdoor courtyard, which will offer seating and decorative landscaping.

McLean, It’s Our Time to Shine!

INGLESIDE AVENUE RENOVATION UPDATE MCC held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of the renovation of its 1234 Ingleside Avenue facility at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 22. Attendees included Virginia’s 34th District Delegate Kathleen J. Murphy, Virginia’s 48th District Delegate Rip Sullivan, Fairfax County Dranesville District Supervisor John Foust, McLean community leaders Robert (Bob) Alden, Carole Herrick and a number of past and present members of the MCC staff and Governing Board. Speakers, MCC Executive Director George Sachs, MCC Governing Board Chair Laurelie Wallace and Dranesville District Supervisor John Foust, detailed the six-year-long process it took to successfully secure the project, acknowledging former Board members, the Friends of McLean Community Center organization, the McLean Project for the Arts, donors Roberto and Gloria Federigan, the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, architects The Lukemire Partnership and residents of the Dranesville district. In his remarks, Foust said the center was “the jewel of McLean.” He noted the foresight of district residents, who 50 years ago voted to

MCC Is on The Move As you can see in this collage of construction photos, the demolition phase of the project is well under way. Crews have worked to remove some interior wall, ceiling and flooring and have cleared some of the existing landscaping, while working to improve the storm water management system in the area. The building and parking lot are now completely enclosed by a chain link fence and inaccessible to the public.

MCC FY 2019 BUDGET IS TOPIC OF MEETINGS IN SEPTEMBER DRANESVILLE DISTRICT RESIDENTS ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND, SUBMIT COMMENTS

The McLean Community Center Governing Board invites Dranesville tax district residents to attend a Public Hearing on MCC’s FY19 Budget, which will be held at the Center’s Administrative Offices at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27. The 2019 fiscal year runs from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019. Residents who would like to speak at the public hearing should call the Center at 703-790-0123, TTY: 711, to have their names added to the speakers’ list. Residents are also invited to attend a meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 12, when the full MCC Board will meet as a Finance Committee of the Whole to work on the details of the FY19 draft budget proposal. The budget outcomes of this 7:30 p.m. meeting will be presented at the public hearing and posted on the MCC website the first week of October. Friends Award recipient Paul Kohlenberger and FMCC President W. Glenn Yarborough, Jr.

Paul Kohlenberger has been named the Friends of the McLean Community Center (FMCC) organization’s 2017 “Friend in Deed.” Kohlenberger is the 26th person to receive this award “with gratitude for outstanding leadership and support of the McLean Community Center.” FMCC President W. Glenn Yarborough, Jr. presented the award at the group’s annual meeting on Monday, June 5. Kohlenberger, who is president of the Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce and of the Historical Society of Fairfax County, is a longtime resident of McLean who is active in a number of community organizations. He has been instrumental in promoting the FMCC through helping establish the group’s website, offering new program ideas, promoting membership initiatives and documenting the Friends history and role in the building of the McLean Community Center (MCC).

In addition, please watch the MCC website for dates of board committee meetings in August and early September when committees will work on departmental budgets in the areas they oversee. The MCC Board will adopt a final budget proposal at its regular meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. The final budget will be approved by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in spring 2018. In addition, Kohlenberger, a two-term member of the MCC Governing Board, served for three years as the Liaison from the Board to FMCC. According to Yarborough, Kohlenberger has been instrumental in assisting the organization to progress in a number of ways. “Paul always has new ideas to move the Friends of the MCC forward. He goes the extra mile by always making himself available to help—be it day or night. Board meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of the month, with the following exceptions: there are no regularly scheduled meetings in August and November, and the December meeting is held on the second Wednesday of the month. MCC staff members moved out of the building in May, and MCC's new locations are up and running and ready to serve you.

McLEAN TRAVELER Gettysburg, Pennsylvania – Eisenhower Farm TUESDAY, OCT. 3

For three days in the summer of 1863, Gettysburg was witness to the greatest battle fought in the United States. This epic struggle began almost by accident on July 1, when a small Confederate scouting party, under the command of General Robert E. Lee, entered the town of Gettysburg looking for shoes. The Southern soldiers ran into General George C. Meade’s Union army and the Battle of Gettysburg would have its beginnings. Four months later, President Lincoln would come here and dedicate this ground where over 40,000 soldiers lost their lives. This group tour will start with a short film at the visitor’s center, followed by an explanation of the restored cyclorama map of the battle and will end with a licensed battlefield guide who will conduct a tour of the battlefield from our bus. Included is a full buffet lunch at historic Dobbin House Tavern, Gettysburg’s oldest and most historic building. Afterwards, there will be a tour of the Eisenhower National Historic Site. Located adjacent to Gettysburg Battlefield, this The Eisenhower den. was the retreat and retirement home of General and President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his wife, Mamie.

The interior and furnishings of the farmhouse are circa 1950 and 90 percent of the contents once belonged to the Eisenhowers. The 2018 Philadelphia Flower Show promises to display creativity and design through nature’s relationship to water in the “Wonders of Water” theme. This is the oldest and largest indoor flower show and the longest running show in America. Questions? Call Maureen Cyron at 703-323-9040.

What could be more fun in December than peeking into the gracious homes of Lewes, Deleware, specifically on display for the holidays? The people of Lewes pride themselves on tradition and historic preservation and it truly shows in their decorating skills. For Christmas 2017, the 44th Annual Christmas Tour of Homes, sponsored by the Lewes Historical Society, will be a self-guided tour of both public and private homes. There will be a Christmas Market as well as an Artists of Lewes Gallery open house. Every year, the proud owners of the homes show off their eclectic decorations with their artwork and family heirlooms. Some houses date back to the early 18th century, others have been forwarded into the 21st century with creative additions.

There are several inviting restaurants in the town itself and a box dinner will be provided for the ride back to Virginia. Due to the costs associated with meal reservations, tickets and chartered transportation, refunds will not be granted to patrons who submit requests less than 21 days before a day trip date, unless they can find a substitute to replace them on the trip. * During MCC’s 18-month renovation, the pickup location for McLean Traveler day trips and tours has yet to be determined. Patrons will be notified when a pickup location has been determined.

On Fairfax County Public Schools’ teacher workdays and school breaks, 5th through 9th graders can join the Old Firehouse on fun-filled trips! For a listing of trips see page page 22, in the Old Firehouse section of this guide. All trips depart from and return to the Old Firehouse, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. Participants must bring clothes appropriate for the day’s activity. A signed OFTC Participant Contract is required to participate. Some trips also require an additional signed waiver. Participant contracts are available at the Old Firehouse or online (www. oldfirehouse.org). Please turn in forms before the day of the trip. Music Together®, an internationally-recognized music and movement program, engages early childhood music development for infant, toddler and preschool children and their parents and other primary caregivers through mixed-aged classes. It pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally-appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement and, it's fun! The Music Together approach develops every child's birthright of basic music competence by encouraging the actual 12 lessons @ 45 mins, $288/$240 MCC district residents. McLEAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY LECTURE ON JOSEPH LEITER, SON OF A “ROBBER BARRON” AND OWNER OF A 72-ROOM MANSION FACING THE POTOMAC (MCC)

Listen to historian Carole Herrick as she discusses Joseph Leiter who once owned hundreds of acres in Langley where the CIA eventually located. Joseph, who lost at least $10 million in 1898 as he tried to corner the wheat market, was the son of Levi Leiter, a “Robber Baron,” who went into the dry goods business with Marshall Fields.
