The McLean Community Center

Who We Are, What We Do The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District 1A-Dranesville). Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio and a classroom/commercial kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings with a nominal charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available in the lobby. The Center also operates the award-winning OldÂ Firehouse Teen Center, located at 1440 Chain BridgeÂ Rd. in downtown McLean.

MCC has secured the use of a nearby property in order to continue to offer a variety of classes. The majority of the Center’s classes will be held at 6645 Old Dominion Dr., in the McLean Square Shopping Center. Currently, the Center offers more than 100 classes each session. The new location includes four classrooms, which will be scheduled for maximum use. The space will also house the Center’s registration office.

McLEAN COMMUNITY CENTER RENOVATION & EXPANSION PROJECT BEGINS APRIL 1; In April 2017, work to renovate the McLean Community Center’s (MCC) Ingleside Avenue facility is scheduled to begin. To ensure the Center’s programs and services will continue uninterrupted, MCC Executive Director George Sachs has worked with Fairfax County’s Facilities Management Department to find and secure rental properties for a 22-month period, beginning as early as March 2017.

MCC on the Move!

During the construction period of the renovation, MCC’s administrative offices will be located in the same shopping center as the new classroom space, at 6631 Old Dominion Dr., on the first floor of the Century 21 New Millennium building. This space will house the executive director, finance, facilities and public information offices of the Center. The large, outdoor community events produced by the Center also will continue to be offered. The Spring and Fall Community Garage Sales will be held at the parking garage at 1420 Beverly Rd.; McLean Day 2017 will be held at Lewinsville Park and the 4th of July Fireworks Celebration will be return to Churchill Road School for a second year.

Center News Jammin’ Juniors, the free, preschool concerts offered by The Alden will be held in local parks, while other performances will be presented in community-based venues. MCC is continuing to identify additional spaces for the dance program, indoor special events and performing arts programs. The McLean Projects for the Arts, currently located on the second floor of MCC, will be relocating to their temporary location in the Giant Shopping Center. The storefront is located between CVS and Kazan’s Restaurant. Their official address will be 1446 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, VA 22101. RENOVATION & EXPANSION PROJECT: HERE’S WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU The McLean Community Center, which opened in October 1975, has undergone a number of enhancements over the years and is sound and wellmaintained. However, the Ingleside Avenue facility is also in great need of updating in order to better meet the needs of its current and future patrons. The renovation and expansion project is estimated to cost approximately $8 million and is fully funded. The input of Small District 1A-Dranesville residents has been sought and responded to throughout the planning process through surveys and public meetings.

RUN FOR A SEAT ON MCC’S 2017-2018 GOVERNING BOARD

• Re-grade and resurface the existing parking lot, add additional parking spaces and improve walkway lighting. • Consolidate the Center’s administrative offices into one, cohesive area. These enhancements will allow the Center to provide its programs and services more efficiently and in a more cost-effective manner for many years to come—and that benefits everyone. The McLean Community Center is looking for district residents to serve on its Governing Board. The Board sets policy, approves budgets and provides general oversight for Center programs and facilities. Board members have a unique opportunity to improve the quality of life for district residents. Openings: Three adult board seats and two youth board seats. Term of Office: Three years for adults and one year for youths. Eligibility: All candidates must be residents of the Center’s tax district (Small District 1A-Dranesville District). One youth candidate from the area served by McLean High School will be elected and one youth candidate from the area served by Langley High School will be elected. Youth candidates need not attend these schools, but must run for the seat representing the area where they live. Petitions:

Each candidate must obtain ten (10) signatures of endorsement from district residents and submit information about his or her candidacy for publication. For a youth candidate, the ten (10) required signatures must also be from youths living in her or his high school area. Petition forms will be available at MCC starting on Monday, Jan. 23.

Center News Deadline: Petitions must be filed at MCC no later than 5 p.m., on Friday, March 17. Election: Residents of the Center’s tax district may vote for Board members on McLean Day, Saturday, May 20, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lewinsville Park, or by absentee ballot from Monday, April 10, through Wednesday, May 17. BOARD APPROVES BUDGET

McLean Community Center Mission

After a public hearing on September 12, the Center’s proposed budget for the next fiscal year, July 1, 2017– June 30, 2018, was approved by the MCC Governing Board at its meeting on September 28. The tax rate to support the Center was maintained at 2.3 cents per $100 of assessed real estate values. The County Board of Supervisors will consider the Center’s budget for final approval in April. The McLean Community Center Governing Board is holding a Public Hearing on MCC Programs at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, at the Center. The Governing Board’s regularly scheduled monthly meeting will follow the public hearing. All meetings of the Board are open to the public. Residents of Small District 1A-Dranesville, the Center’s tax district, are encouraged to attend the hearing to voice their opinions on current offerings at the Center and to make suggestions for future programs. The hearing is the first step in planning for the FY 2019 budget cycle, which begins July 1, 2018. The Center is home to the Robert Ames Alden Theatre and includes the Old Firehouse Teen Center, which is located at 1440 Chain Bridge Road. Residents who would like to have their names placed on the speakers’ list for the hearing may call the Center at 703-790-0123, TTY: 711. These wall sculptures and installations combine imagery and concepts from natural science and the landscape. Found objects such as cable, screws, nuts and bolts are included in these works as well, referring to the process of building and constructing.

MPA will continue to run exhibitions and classes at their current location at the McLean Community Center with an additional gallery, MPA’s Chain Bridge Gallery, opening December 2016 at 1446 Chain Bridge Road, McLean, VA (located in the Giant Shopping Center). FEBRUARY – MARCH 2017 SCULPTURE NOW

An exhibition of sculpture in all its forms and permutations, it offers a sampling of work by artists from the Mid-Atlantic region. The exhibition is organized in partnership with the Washington Sculptors Group, a nonprofit artist membership organization with over 450 members. Included will be works utilizing mechanics, sound, light, carpentry, metalworking and a myriad of other processes and materials.

McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) is a nonprofit organization that presents the visual arts program for the community at the McLean Community Center (MCC), thanks to a public/private partnership with MCC and Fairfax County. MPA presents exhibitions of contemporary art in three galleries and provides education in the visual arts through a program of classes for children and adults, as well as lectures, tours and ArtReach, an outreach program that brings school children and other groups to the gallery for educational programs. MPA presents art classes in the Susan B. Duval Studio (see class listings on pages 26–30). McLEAN TRAVELER 2017 Philadelphia Flower Show

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15, 2017 The theme of the 2017 Philadelphia Flower show is “Holland” but there will be much more than just tulips on display! This is the world’s oldest and largest indoor flower show and the longest running show in North America. The Philadelphia Horticultural Society has promised creative Dutch landscapes, previewing Holland’s top landscape architects as well as Holland’s history, art and culture. Just picture windmills, canals, wooden shoes and so many other tributes to the Netherlands and their diverse gardening techniques. As in years past, garden shoppers will be thrilled with the more than 180 dealers selling everything from garden furniture to unique plants and flowers. Horticulture, artistic culinary lectures and demonstrations by world-class experts are all free to show visitors. Lunch will be on your own. Feel free to sample from the plentiful food vendors at the Convention Center or across the street at the Historic Reading Terminal Market, where the selections range from Philly cheesesteaks to home baked Amish goods. Fredericksburg Garden Day TUESDAY, APRIL 25, 2017

Garden Week is always such a beautiful experience wherever the destination is in Virginia. This year, the historic town of Fredericksburg is the ideal place to visit during this special time. Visitors will walk from the 18th century into the 21st century as they tour six homes and three additional gardens in the Kenmore Valley neighborhood of Fredericksburg. In addition to visiting the homes and gardens, the Plein Air artist group of Fredericksburg will be painting that day and they will give away a painting to one lucky guest. The transportation committee has arranged a bus drop-off and pick-up area on the route to help with those who do not want to walk far. Garden Week in Virginia is always popular, so sign up early for this spectacular spring day trip. Day Trip Refund/Withdrawal Policy: Patrons who submit refund/withdrawal requests in writing to registrar@mcleancenter.org 14 days or more before the date of a day trip will receive a full refund. Due to the costs associated with meal reservations, tickets and chartered transportation, refunds will not be granted to patrons who submit requests less than 14 days before a day trip date, unless a substitute is provided in their place. Refunds/Withdrawals may be granted only for medical reasons or for extenuating circumstances as determined by the General Program Director. Medical requests must be accompanied by doctor’s note.

• Most day trips and overnight tours require a fair amount of walking. Participants should be fit and able to handle the activities included in the tour. The 2017 James C. Macdonald Performing Arts Scholarship Competition Each year, the McLean Community Center recognizes the hard work and talent of young performing artists through the James C. Macdonald Performing Arts Scholarship Competition. Following a preliminary audition and a final round of competition, prizes (1st - $1,200, 2nd - $800 and 3rd - $400) are awarded in each of four categories: dance, instrumental music, vocal music and theater. High school students who reside or attend school in the MCC tax district (Small District One A-Dranesville) are eligible to apply.

Bridge games are open to Center district residents and their guests. There is no fee, but residents will be required to sign in each time they participate. Please call to check with Center staff each week before coming to participate.

Senior Bridge Meets Mondays. Participants should arrive by 9:45 a.m. to be included in the rotation for games, which begins at 10 a.m. Play will go for six half-hour rounds, with a lunch break.

In April 2017, the MCC will close its doors and move operations off-site while we undergo an extensive construction and renovation project. While we are off-site, we will not offer the free Drop-In Bridge programs. The MCC is slated to reopen in the Fall of 2018.

Completed forms may be faxed to 703‑556‑0547. • In Person/Drop Off You may register in person at the Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. At other times, drop a completed registration form and payment (in the form of a check or money order, or by completing the credit card information on the form) into the registration box located in the lobby adjacent to the reception desk.

REGISTRATION BEGINS

PAYMENT

CLASS AND ACTIVITY REFUND POLICY

• All withdrawals, refund and cancellation requests must be submitted in writing to registrar@mcleancenter.org. • Patrons who submit refund requests 14 days or more before the start date of a class or activity, will be granted a refund, minus a $25 processing fee. Refunds requested less than 14 days before the start date of the class or activity will not be granted.

SUMMER CAMP REFUND POLICY

• The Center will issue a full refund when a camp program is canceled by the Center. • All withdrawals, refund and cancellation requests must be submitted in writing to registrar@mcleancenter.org. • Request for withdrawals/cancellations before April 3, 2017 — Patrons will receive a full refund. • Request for withdrawals/cancellations after April 3, 2017 — Patrons will be charge a $100 processing fee which will be deducted from the total amount paid. They will receive a refund for the remaining amount. • If a replacement can be found to fill the space vacated by the cancellation/ withdrawal, the $100 processing fee will be refunded to the patron. • If a replacement cannot be found, a refund will not be issued.

RESTRICTIONS

• Once a class, camp or activity is in session, refunds may be granted only for medical reasons or for extenuating circumstances as determined by the General Programs Director and the Registrar. Medical requests must be accompanied by a doctor’s note (verification).

• Payment is due at the time of registration in the form of a check, money order or credit card (American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa) number with expiration date. If paying by check, please make payable to McLean Community Center, unless otherwise noted. • Receipt confirmations will be emailed. If no email address is provided, receipt confirmations will be mailed.

General Information

• Senior citizens (age 60 and older) are eligible to receive a ten (10) percent discount on classes except where noted. • Senior discounts are not available for tours and other activities.

MATERIALS FEE

• All materials fees are due to the instructor on the first day of class, unless other-wise noted.

• Absences and personal scheduling conflicts are not reimbursable. • The Center is not obligated to make up classes due to absences and personal scheduling conflicts. However, each instructor has her/his own make-up policy; arrangements for make-up classes are scheduled through individual instructors. Please do not contact the Center.

HOLIDAY AND INCLEMENT WEATHER • See MCC’s holiday schedule on the table of contents page (p. 1). • The class program follows Fairfax County Public Schools’ inclement weather policy. In case of inclement weather, check our website (www.mcleancenter.org), call 703‑790‑0123, TTY: 711 (hearing impaired), or listen for cancellation information on local radio stations.
