Springing Into A Summer of Fun A Letter from Executive Director George Sachs Who We Are, What We Do The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District 1A-Dranesville). Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio, a multipurpose classroom and catering kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings with a nominal charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available. The Center also operates the award-winning Old Firehouse Teen Center, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. in downtown McLean.

As the spring and summer seasons arrive, the McLean Community Center Governing Board and staff are welcoming the change of seasons with a multitude of activities—all for you to enjoy. As you can see on the cover, it is almost time for our largest annual event, McLean Day. As we welcome more than 13,000 visitors to Lewinsville Park, let me encourage you to take a few minutes as you enter the park to vote for candidates who are running for seats on our Governing Board. Your vote is vital to the success of our mission to meet the needs of members of our community. These candidates who volunteer to serve on the board need your input and support as they seek to represent you. Please take the time to cast your ballot or vote by absentee ballot if you cannot attend McLean Day this year. Detailed information is listed on pages 3– 5. Speaking of volunteers, in February we held the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon to honor and celebrate our wonderful volunteers. See the article on pages 5 – 6. We deeply appreciate our many volunteers. As a matter of fact, our volunteers are critical to the function and operation of the center. We could not do what we do without their continuing support. I want to take this opportunity to express a heartfelt and huge “Thank you!” to the many volunteers who have given their time and talents to ensuring our success. I hope you and your family will plan to join us in the coming months for some exciting activities. Our summer camp programs and classes offer your children a wide array of enriching experiences. The Alden’s free summer concerts are family-friendly and they’re a great place to visit with your neighbors. The annual July 4th Independence Day Celebration and the Old Firehouse Block Party in August are other summer fun options. The Governing Board, staff and I are looking forward to returning to the Center soon. Our Ingleside Avenue renovation project is progressing well and we hope to be returning to our home soon. Meet The Candidates! (listed in alphabetical order)

The Governing Board and staff of the McLean Community Center strongly encourage all qualified residents to vote for members of the McLean Community Center 2018-2019 Governing Board. Your vote sends a very important message of your support of the Center’s programs and services. When & Where: Vote between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the McLean Day 2018 festival on Saturday, May 19, at Lewinsville Park, 1659 Chain Bridge Rd. Requirements to Vote:

1. You must be a resident of the McLean Community Center tax district (Dranesville Small District 1A); however, you need not be registered to vote in the general election. 2. You must be at least 18 years old to vote for an adult candidate. Adults may vote for up to three candidates. Teens turning 18 on or before McLean Day may only vote for adult candidates. 3. You must be 15 through 17 years old by McLean Day to vote for youth candidates. Youth voters have two votes, and may vote for one candidate in the Langley High School boundary area, and one candidate in the McLean High School boundary area. Youth voters may not vote for more than one candidate in the same boundary area. 4. You must bring identification and proof of residency, such as a driver’s license. If you do not have identification, you may sign a sworn statement.

I’m excited to run as a candidate for the board of the McLean Community Center. My husband and I have lived in McLean for 14 years. We’re grateful to be raising our twins in such a wonderful community. I have been a foreign language and history teacher for 20 years. I have broad experience working with companies and nonprofits facing budget challenges. I’ve been pleased to work with many organizations advancing core values my parents instilled in me: volunteerism and hard work. McLean Community Center opened in 1975; thus, it has served residents of Small District 1A for 43 years. It is the community’s jewel. Among its many features, the center provides community information, classes, lectures, meeting space, a kitchen, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, the MPA gallery, the Alden Theatre and a teen center. Years ago, I served three terms on the Governing Board, followed by Friends of MCC. Soon a more modern center will open. Hello, my name is Brian and I am a student at Langley High School. I am running for a position on the Governing Board to become an active member of my community. At Langley, I am a member of the Debate Team and Varsity Golf Team. The McLean Community Center (MCC) has awarded its top honor for volunteers, the 2017 H. Gordon Randall Outstanding Volunteer Service Award, to Melanie Sanders-Smith. The award was presented at the Center’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on Sunday, Feb. 25, at Seasons 52 Restaurant at Tysons Corner Center. MCC’s Ingleside Avenue facility, located at 1234 Ingleside Ave., is under renovation. Temporary administrative offices are located at 6631 Old Dominion Dr. A McLean tax district resident, Sanders-Smith works as an independent consultant in international development. She was nominated for the award by MCC Special Events Manager Catherine Nesbitt. According to Nesbitt, over the last two years Sanders-Smith has volunteered for the Center and has provided more than 20 volunteers at a time for various MCC events from among the missionaries serving at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in McLean, Va. Summer 2018 Program Guide “Melanie and her LDS youth group have worked all day in the blaring heat and in the cold rain improving the quality of our events and making our events better-staffed” said Nesbitt. “She has worked with her LDS youth group, passing on valuable knowledge and training to ensure the positions they fill are performed at their highest capacity, displaying stellar volunteerism and, in turn, enhancing MCC programs and initiatives.”

These volunteers have helped at many of the events the Center produces, including the McLean Holiday Crafts Show, the Spring and Fall Community Garage Sales, McLean Day and the Independence Day Celebration.

An MCC Staffer in the Spotlight Danielle Van Hook, Director, Youth Theatre Programs

Eighteen months ago, The Alden welcomed a new Director of its Youth Theatre Programs. Meet Danielle Van Hook. She was hired to fill the position after the retirement of longtime employee Kathy Herr. An experienced theater professional with a love of youth, Danielle has been busy refreshing the performing arts division’s offerings for the “under 18” crowd. An Arts Management graduate of Juniata College, Danielle began her career at the Wolf Trap Foundation’s Institute for Early Learning through the Arts where she worked with teachers to bring artists to area classrooms. Before joining MCC, she worked in the programming and resource development department at the Association of Performing Arts Professionals, the largest service organization for performing arts industry professionals. Her new job encompasses “everything and anything” that The Alden offers for youth and the performing arts, including the family performance series, Alden productions featuring McLean youth,

(the) Unruly Theatre Project and other improv programs, the Macdonald Scholarship Competition, summer concerts and the music education program, as well as youth performing arts master classes and workshops. “The best part of my job is getting to know the community! Between the professional artist series for families and our programs for young actors, I get to meet arts lovers of all ages,” she said. Parents have expressed to Van Hook that they are offered improv training at their workplaces and they are happy to see our improv programs being offered to youth. “I see how improv improves students’ confidence, leadership, quick thinking and many other abilities, but it’s even better when parents get excited about the impact.” she says. Working with young McLean actors on Alden-produced shows has also been a rewarding experience. “Participants are sometimes upset when the shows end. This always reminds me of the great impact the performing arts has on the lives of young people and it also speaks to the power theater has to unite us,” she said. On a personal note, Danielle and her husband Travis married shortly before she began her new position. The couple recently added a new member to their family, a Goldendoodle puppy named JoJo. According to Van Hook, “She loves people and is the sweetest bundle of energy.” Look for JoJo (and Danielle) at The Alden’s summer concerts in McLean Central Park this July. McLean, It’s Our Time to Shine!

Progress Continues on Ingleside Renovation Project

As we enter the spring, work on the McLean Community Center’s renovation and expansion project continues with easily visible progress being made on the additions. The project remains on schedule and within budget. If all goes as planned, the project may be completed within the new year.

Contractor Sorenson Gross has started to finish much of the site work and recently completed extensive work on the building’s foundation. Reaching this milestone has allowed the construction team to move on to erecting steel beams for the additional meeting rooms and enclosed courtyard, which will be located at the rear of the original building. The layout of the new multi-purpose rooms, extended lobby area and new conference rooms are now visible and allows one to get a sense of what the renovated building will look like

Upon completion of the placement of the steel girders, the contractor will slowly start enclosing the structures and focusing their work on the inside of the building. Interior projects include extending fire protection into the new areas of the building, running electricity and the IT infrastructure to support the new meeting rooms and extending necessary plumbing to the new restrooms.

Summer 2018 Program Guide Therapy Dogs Lift Hearts and Bring Happiness to the Old Firehouse

People Animals Love (PAL) is a Washington, D.C. based nonprofit whose mission is “to utilize the human-animal bond to brighten the lives of the lonely, ease the pain of the sick, and enrich the world of at-risk children.” PAL volunteers now visit the Old Firehouse Center (OFC) once a month to provide a Old Firehouse General Manager Mike Fisher spends some time with pet therapy session for OFC members and other guests. Destiny.

Gelman, who owns three pet therapy dogs, said a dog must have the right personality to become a therapy dog. The PAL volunteers also have offered their services at the Paws to Read programs at Falls Church and Arlington libraries, McLean High School, Walter Reed National Military Medical PAL volunteer Sari Clark with her King Charles Center and Sunrise Spaniel, Max. Assisted Living facilities in the area.

“The teens love the dogs and come every month. It is special to see them make an emotional connection,” said Teen Center Manager Ashlyn Thompson.

At the most recent visit in February, volunteers brought four dogs to the center. Longtime volunteer Nancy Murray brought her dog Cameo, a Collie/Husky mix; Sari Clark brought her King Charles Spaniel named Max; John Herold brought his dog Samantha (“Sammy” for short) a golden retriever; and Dave Gelman brought his border collie mix, Destiny.

Instructor Allie O’Hare, or “Miss Allie” as she is known, brings dedication, energy and enthusiasm to her work with young dancers-in-training at MCC. Joy of Dance director Marilyn Baird, parents, students and Center staff have all been delighted to work with O’Hare for the last seven years. O’Hare earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance and Choreography from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2007. After performing professionally, including with the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, she decided to try teaching. “I had no idea how much I would fall in love with it,” she said. “I get to share my love for the art with all of my students and at the same time, I learn so much from them.” At MCC, she teaches a wide array of classes, including PrePrimary I and II, Combination I, II and IV, Junior Company, Senior Company, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip-Hop and Contemporary. “I love the sense of community, the staff and the atmosphere at MCC. All the families I work with are amazing and make me feel appreciated and loved. There is never a dull moment when I’m at work. My students never fail to make me laugh and touch my heart with their sweet little souls every day, she said.” In her free time, O’Hare enjoys spending time with her family. She describes her mother and father as her biggest supporters and her brother and sister have provided her with her favorite “role” thus far --- that of doting aunt to several nieces and nephews.

Outdoor Adventure Camps for Children

All skill levels of anglers are welcome. Fish and Explore camps are travel camps. Each day, we transport campers to a new location to discover the wonders of the outdoors. We will provide all gear and necessary equipment for each camp. This will include fishing rods, tackle, lures and bait. Fish and Explore will provide transportation for all camps. Lifejackets will be supplied and required while on a boat or in the water. Bring lunch, snack, change of clothes, sneakers or river shoes and towel. Fish and Explore will transport campers daily to lakes, rivers and other local waterways. Everyone will catch fish. Students will fish different types of water: public and private lakes, reservoirs, ponds, rivers, streams, creeks and the Chesapeake Bay over the course of the week. Native Animal Explorer (NAE) 1 and 2 (Off-Site)

Hike trails and wade streams, walk ponds and lake shores to find native wildlife. Each day campers will travel to a new location. Campers will observe, catch, photograph and release frogs, toads, tadpoles, salamanders, lizards, turtles, crayfish, minnows and many smaller critters that live the life aquatic, as well as their nearby woodland neighbors. Does your child love hearing a story? Do you see them imagining and living out their favorite story characters? This summer, the McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) is offering art camps that integrate classic elements of art with dramatic themes rooted in multicultural literary myths. Draw, print, collage, paint and construct your way through ancient and modern-day legends and myths from across the world, including Greek, Chinese, European and American traditions. Artmaking will emphasize the drama of each story through elements of art, color and line shape using a wide variety of mediums including drawing, painting and 3-D construction. Live readings, improv sessions and other theatrical activities will prompt campers to discover and interpret these stories.

MPA Art + Storytelling will encourage the integration of art and drama by following a multi-faceted theme throughout the week, incorporating a tactile exploration of literature, culture, and of course, art. While connecting art and drama, your camper will: • Revel in the mythologies of ancient Greek culture through the story of “Daedalus and Icarus.” • Explore the range of medieval literature from “Robin Hood” to Shakespeare. • Discover ancient Chinese culture and the role of heroes and heroines through “The Ballad of HuaMulan,” the ancient legend that inspired the Disney movie “Mulan.” • Experience classic American authors such as Mark Twain and Laura Ingalls Wilder. Summer 2018 Classes – Visual Arts Camps for Teens Vosler Young Artists’ Studio @ MPA Classical Drawing and Painting Program for Teens Join us as we welcome back Kerry Vosler and her highly regarded atelier studio for the third year in a row! This workshop will introduce the young artist to a classical atelier program of instruction where they will learn to draw through direct observation. For any young artist with the desire to learn classical drawing. No previous experience is necessary. Students will draw a variety of pictures in charcoal throughout the week, including copy work from the late 19th century Bargue-Gérôme Drawing Course, culminating in a session with a live model on Friday afternoon. The Bargue drawings this year will include different content on the human skull and muscles of the face and neck. Students will have at least two finished portfolio drawings by the end of the week, and parents and families are encouraged to attend the closing certificate ceremony on Friday.

The Hudson River is an ancient river that goes back 75 million years and cuts its valley between the Catskill and Taconic mountains, continuing down the Hudson Highlands and flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. Its beauty is rarely surpassed. Day 1 After boarding the bus and on the way to the Hudson River Valley, we will stop at the home of Frederick and Louise Vanderbilt. This glorious mansion was designed by Stanford White and is an excellent example of “The Gilded Age.” The Beekman Arms in historic Rhinebeck, N.Y., Vanderbilt Mansion, home of Frederick will be our home for three and Louise Vanderbilt. nights. First established as a traveler’s inn in 1704, the Beekman Arms has hosted a wide range of guests, from George Washington and Alexander Hamilton to Nicole Kidman and Billy Joel. A continental breakfast will be included every morning. One of the highlights of the Hudson River Valley is the Franklin Delano Roosevelt National Historic Site and Val‑Kill Cottage, the retreat of Eleanor Roosevelt.

Day 2 This will be a busy day that includes guided tours of both Springwood, FDR’s birthplace and home, and Val-Kill Cottage, the only National Historic Site dedicated to a first lady. Lunch will be at Coppolla’s Springwood, birthplace and home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. which has been a fixture of Southern Italian cuisine in Hyde Park for 55 years. Our morning begins with a tour of Staatsburgh, which was the elegant country home of Ruth and Ogden Mills. This grand masterpiece was enlarged and remodeled by the prestigious architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White. Lunch will be in the town of Kingston, which was the first capital of New York in 1777. This trip would not be complete without a boat ride on the beautiful Hudson. Enjoy both indoor and outdoor seating on the Rip Van Winkle Cruise Boat while hearing the history of the mighty Hudson River. Dinner that night will be at Terrapin Restaurant in historic Rhinebeck.

Presidents Day in December Wednesday, Dec. 5

James Monroe, our fifth president lived at his home named Highland for 25 years. It was Thomas Jefferson who encouraged Monroe to purchase Highland which was adjacent to Jefferson’s home, Monticello. Unfortunately, due to increasing debt, Monroe was forced to sell his beloved estate in 1825. Fittingly, the home is now owned and operated by Monroe’s alma mater, the College of William and Mary. Our guided tour consists of the house and any additions that Monroe made. Just recently archaeologists discovered the foundation of a much larger house now presumed to be Monroe’s Highland, James Monroe’s official residence. home. Lunch will be at Michie’s Tavern, opened in 1784 and is designated as a Virginia historic landmark. The lunch will be traditional and homemade southern fare. The Tavern Gift Shop and General Store will be filled with holiday goodies. Monticello is our last stop of the day because there is so much to explore. Jefferson began creating and building Monticello at the young age of 26 and modeled it after the designs of the Italian Renaissance architect, Andrea Palladio who Jefferson greatly admired. For Jefferson, Monticello was an ongoing project. Started in 1772, this

grand estate started out as a plantation house but after Jefferson’s trips to Europe as Secretary of State, many of the classical buildings of Italy and France influenced Jefferson’s designs. The outbuildings and slave quarters may also be visited. Day and Overnight Tour Guidelines Tour Refund/Cancellation Request Policy Due to the costs associated with deposits and reservations for hotel rooms, meals, reservations, tickets, admissions, guided tours and chartered bus transportation, refunds/cancellations are only granted for medical reasons or for extenuating circumstances as determined by the tour operator and program director. Requests for refunds for medical reasons must be accompanied by a doctor’s note. For Day Trips Only - A full refund will be issued when a written request is received four weeks prior to the date of the day trip or if a patron can find a substitute to take the trip. Refund/Cancellation requests must be submitted in writing to registrar@mcleancenter.org four weeks or more before the date of the trip.

Please Note: • Most of our tours require a fair amount of walking. Participants should be fit and able to handle the activities included in the tour. Working with the humble material of recycled corrugated cardboard, German-born, Maryland-based artist Artemis Herber creates massive depictions of space and place. Devoid of people, the works insist on viewer interaction. They strongly suggest a possibly risky entrance into her imagined hybrid environments of abandoned cities, threatening clouds, distant horizons and eternal twilight. These are places that reside within the realm of what Herber describes as “alienated poetry” and to view them is to experience a place that hovers somewhere between the past, present and future.

The Old Firehouse Center (OFC) provides an incredible experience for 7th through 12th graders. Participants will enjoy exposure to new recreational activities and experience personal development under the supervision of professional and experienced staff members who organize and facilitate fun activities, clubs and trips. Teens can enjoy their time after school, during school breaks and at our Friday Night Activities and events.

Completed forms may be faxed to 703‑653‑9435. • In Person/Drop Off You may register in person at the Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Senior Discounts

• Senior citizens (age 60 and older) are eligible to receive a ten (10) percent discount on classes except where noted. • Senior discounts are not available for tours and other activities.

Materials Fee

• All materials fees are due to the instructor on the first day of class, unless otherwise noted.

Class and Activity Refund Policy

• All withdrawals, refund and cancellation requests must be submitted in writing to registrar@mcleancenter.org. • Patrons who submit refund requests 14 days or more before the start date of a class or activity, will be granted a refund, minus a $25 processing fee. Refunds requested less than 14 days before the start date of the class or activity will not be granted.

Summer Camp Refund Policy

• The Center will issue a full refund when a camp program is canceled by the Center. • All withdrawals, refund and cancellation requests must be submitted in writing to registrar@mcleancenter.org. • Request for withdrawals/cancellations before April 6, 2018 — Patrons will receive a full refund. • Request for withdrawals/cancellations after April 6, 2018 — Patrons will be charged a $100 processing fee which will be deducted from the total amount paid. They will receive a refund for the remaining amount. • If a replacement can be found to fill the space vacated by the cancellation/ withdrawal, the $100 processing fee will be refunded to the patron. • If a replacement cannot be found, a refund will not be issued.

Restrictions

• Once a class, camp or activity is in session, refunds may be granted only for medical reasons or for extenuating circumstances as determined by the General Programs Director and the Registrar. Medical requests must be accompanied by a doctor’s note (verification).

Absences from Class

• Absences and personal scheduling conflicts are not reimbursable. • The Center is not obligated to make up classes due to absences and personal scheduling conflicts. However, each instructor has her/his own make-up policy; arrangements for make-up classes are scheduled through individual instructors. Please do not contact the Center.
