2021 FALL PROGRAM GUIDE
WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District 1A-Dranesville). Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio, a multipurpose classroom and catering kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings with a nominal charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available. The Center also operates the award-winning Old Firehouse Center, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. in downtown McLean.
AT THE CENTER OF THE MCLEAN COMMUNITY—JOIN US! The nation and the region are slowly re-emerging after facing a roller coaster of traumas recently. Throughout the US, folks have rediscovered the importance of communities— sometimes in their struggles, sometimes in their pods, and sometimes via Zoom. We invite you to come discover the fabric of McLean Community Center—a simple and powerful focus on the people that strengthen McLean. This fall, as we rethread our notions of neighbors and community members, one thing is certain: we cannot go back to the way things were. But wherever our future takes, we can make it a robust one by strengthening each and every person in our midst, so that we grow together. MCC is centering the emotional and physical well-being of each one of you as we launch our Fall Season of classes, events, and performances. Whether you have discovered a new way of connecting online from the comfort of your home, or you only want to attend in-person events, or you want a hybrid of these options—we have the right programming for you. Our staff has worked hard to center your needs whether it is the joy of dance by Pilobolus, or our fall festivals where you can shop for crafts or antiques, the unique classes we offer, or the block parties at our teen center—each event strives to connect you to your neighbors and the larger McLean community. In addition, MCC continues our ongoing partnerships with our sister community anchors, including McLean Project for the Arts’ MPAartfest. Our McLean 5K in partnership with McLean Community Foundation is back on track this year with some fabulous prizes for the winners as well as random giveaways. We welcome Ivy Chen, Max Blacksten, Shivani Shaboo, Lisa Mariam and Rasheq Rahman, a talented, thoughtful and diverse group of board members who will be helping us weave in their substantive ideas into our ongoing vibrant programming. Lastly, we hope to have a series of listening sessions that will allow you to connect with the Board and Staff at MCC directly with your thoughts and suggestions for new programming options. Information is available here for you to sign up for one of the listening sessions or for you to submit suggestions: www.mcleancenter.org. Regardless of whether you can attend the in-person listening sessions or not, I invite you to email me with your thoughts any time at: Daniel.Singh@fairfaxcounty.gov. We look forward to welcoming you to the Center as soon as you are able to come and visit us. To our health, Daniel

2021 FALL PROGRAM GUIDE STAFF SPOTLIGHT Dave Craig Graphic Designer & Webmaster For MCC Graphic Designer and Webmaster Dave Craig, delivering messages through visuals created by hand or the click of a mouse is more than what he does for a living. It’s his passion. A staff member at MCC for the last three years, Craig comes from a strong design background. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Arcadia University in Glenside, Pa. before taking on freelance jobs and ultimately accepting a position with Whole Foods Market as a store graphic artist where he designed pieces for the entire Mid-Atlantic region. “When Amazon purchased Whole Foods, they eliminated my position, but it had a happy ending,” he said. “Without losing my job, I never would have discovered MCC.” As the artist behind much of MCC’s marketing material, Craig helps lead the effort of reaching the Center’s patrons and local residents through a variety of mediums. He is responsible for creating ads, logos, posters, flyers and other marketing materials for the Center, The Alden Theatre and the Old Firehouse Center. He also designs the program and camp guides, as well as the Alden’s season brochure. As if that wasn’t enough, Craig is also responsible for maintaining and updating the Center’s website, mcleancenter.org, and occasionally photographing MCC-sponsored events. His favorite part of all of it? “Helping the incredibly talented staff at MCC deliver
new, innovative ideas into the eyes and hands of our patrons.” In his free time, Craig enjoys writing and performing music on the guitar, playing video games and writing graphic novels. He lives with his girlfriend who is the lead cheetah-keeper at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. They have two dogs, Theodore, “Master of Mayhem,” and Stanley, “Captain of Chaos.”
A selection of Craig’s hand-drawn art (Clockwise from top): Pizza chalk 1 (2018); Coquilles I (2020); Chocolate (2018) A photo of Craig can be found on the Staff Spotlight page at mcleancenter.org

FALL CLASSES • INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT
CLASSES INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT Daniel Weissbarth Silver Knights Enrichment Daniel Weissbarth and Silver Knights Enrichment have offered youth chess classes at MCC for more than a decade. Founded in 2006 by Daniel’s brother, Adam Weissbarth, Silver Knights Enrichment has taught more than 100,000 kids, welcoming students of all skill levels. The organization offers in-person and online instruction, tournaments, pre-recorded exercises and other lessons to develop skill sets and knowledge of the strategic game. Weissbarth stated that his passion for teaching stems from his own journey and appreciation for chess. “I’m a lifelong tournament chess player,” he said, “so teaching kids about the best game in the world is a total joy.” He achieved the title of Expert in 2009, a title given by the United States Chess Federation, the same year he moved to Northern Virginia to be the program director for the new branch of the company. Since 2008, Weissbarth and Silver Knights Enrichment have taught students that went on to win more than 50 state and national championships. “The kids’ enthusiasm,” however, is what he professed to be his favorite aspect of teaching. “Watching their excitement as they learn a new skill and their excitement and confidence balloons.” Originally Silver Knights Chess, the company became Silver Knights Enrichment in 2015 following its expansion into coding and robotics instruction. Additionally, the recent launch of online chess programs by Weissbarth himself has enabled the organization to reach more children due to the shift to virtual learning as a result of the pandemic. Weissbarth says MCC is a wonderful and inviting place that also welcomes some incredible people. “We’ve always had the nicest students and parents!” REGISTER ONLINE | www.mcleancenter.org

You and Your “Stuff” - How to Transition your Memories to the Next Generation We’ve all heard the repeating phrase “Your kids don’t want your stuff”—and to an extent that is very true. Each generation embraces only those aspects from the previous generation that resonates with them. But, there IS a way to work with that fact to help ensure you not only successfully transition the “stuff” of your history, but also help the next generation not regret their hasty decisions. MULTI-DISCIPLINARY The Alden’s “Celebrating Indian Festivals” Series As part of The Alden’s Summer Concert series in 2022, we will be presenting Garba360, a South Asian social dance experience with live music. An essential component of the nine-day, fall Hindu festival Navratri, garba is an intoxicating, high-energy folk dance style from the Indian state of Gujarat. This community event has been reimagined for all to participate in the fun any time of the year! Leading up to this event, The Alden will provide virtual workshops to give context to this celebration and the culture that surrounds it. Because each Indian state has its own cultural traditions, it is impossible to take a “deep dive” into the culture of the whole country in just a few workshops, so we will be exploring some of the ways people from Gujarat mark the transition of seasons. These workshops are designed for families from all backgrounds to participate in together. We will all learn something, but because these workshops are celebratory events, they can be enjoyed by those who already have family traditions marking these events or those who have never participated in one of these events before. All workshop leaders are of Gujarati heritage and will share their culture with us from their own perspective.
Mark your calendar now for other upcoming events in this series:
Celebrate Garba (Sharad Navratri) Workshop (Virtual) When people in the northwestern Indian state of Gujarat want to celebrate, the ecstatic dance traditionally known as garba often provides the fuel. An essential component of wedding celebrations and of the nine-day, fall Hindu festival Navratri, garba refers to both a style of Indian folk dance as well as the event at which the dance is performed. The dance is an intoxicating, high-energy dance style marked by hand claps and twirls. In advance of Navratri, join us to learn more about the dance and practice the steps. Feel free to wear a long, flared skirt, kurta top or other Indian clothing. $7/$5 MCC district residents (fee is per device) F, Sept. 17

The intricate beats, ridiculous songs, tap dancing and stunning synchronicity combined with the variety of instruments and found objects that they manipulate is unlike any other show. Running time: 90 minutes. “Not only are they talented musically and have the most amazing clean sense of humor, but they appreciate their audience. My family and I can’t wait to have the chance to see them again. We hope it’s sooner than later.” — Audience Member McLean Central Park, 1468 Dolley Madison Blvd. Free admission Sa, Sept. 18

MUSIC The Okee Dokee Brothers As the GRAMMY-winning Okee Dokee Brothers, Justin Lansing and Joe Mailander have built a plaid-shirted national following with their outdoor adventure-themed albums, “Can You Canoe?,” “Through The Woods,” “Saddle Up” and “Winterland.” But whether it's indoors or out, the Okee Dokee Brothers believe that as long as folks are singing together there’s a glimpse of hope for our world. They’ll share old favorites as well as brand new tunes from their latest album, “Songs for Singin’.” “So sing to the sunrise and sing to the moon,” the Brothers say. “Sing with your kids and sing with your neighbors. Sometimes it just takes singing a song with one another to remind us that we’re all family.” Running time: 60 minutes "The Okee Dokee Brothers are an absolute national treasure. These songs are just what the world needs right now." — Sarah Jackson, Minnesota Parent Magazine $20/$15 MCC district residents Sa & Su, Oct. 16–17 BUY TICKETS | www.aldentheatre.org
