2019 FALL PROGRAM GUIDE

WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District 1A-Dranesville). Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio, a multipurpose classroom and catering kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings with a nominal charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available. The Center also operates the award-winning Old Firehouse Center, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. in downtown McLean.

Anticipating an Amazing Autumn Hello neighbor! How are you? How well do you know your neighborhood, this town of ours? This fall, we are offering ample opportunities for you to get to know your neighborhood and some of the many wonderful people and organizations in it. In collaboration with the McLean Project for the Arts and the Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce, MCC is participating in a “Fall for McLean” campaign to encourage you, other residents of Fairfax County and visitors to our area to take some time to discover McLean in new ways this fall. We hope you will join us for these special events. See page 7 for more detailed information. Among these events, you will notice our new McLean Pet Fest. You may recall MCC offered this event some years ago, but what you will experience this year is a newly expanded version with exhibitors and information to help you become the best pet parent possible. Also, two of our longest-running special events return after a two-year hiatus. The McLean Antiques Show & Sale and the McLean Holiday Crafts Show are both back and better than ever! We know you have missed them, and we have missed them too. Music, dance, theater and even magic are on the menu for The Alden’s 2019-2020 Season. This will be the first full season The Alden has offered in two years and it is packed with a wide variety of world-renowned, innovative artists providing entertainment for all ages. Check out the Season-at-a-Glance on pages 51–52 and make plans to purchase your tickets now. The fall season is a season of growth, so it’s a perfect time to take a class! We have several new class offerings, including Cuban Cuisine and Cook Once, Eat for Days (Culinary Arts), Giant Foods’ Six Weeks to Wellness (Fitness) and Beginner Dog Obedience (Dog Training), among many others. MCC is a convenient and affordable continuing education resource for area residents, and we think it’s one of the special features that make McLean so unique. Looking forward to seeing you soon,

George Sachs Executive Director McLean Community Center

MCC Executive Director George Sachs Named 2019 “Friend in Deed” At its annual meeting on Monday, June 10, the Friends of the McLean Community Center (FMCC) awarded its 2019 “Friend in Deed” Award to McLean Community Center Executive Director George Sachs. Sachs is the 28th person to receive the award “with gratitude for outstanding leadership and support of the McLean Community Center.” FMCC President W. Glenn Yarborough, Jr., recognized Sachs for working to conceptualize, redesign, successfully fund and see to completion the $8 million renovation of the Center’s Ingleside Avenue facility. “No one has had a more profound influence on McLean and the McLean Community Center than George,” said Yarborough. “George brought home the refurbishment of the MCC and gave all of us a center of McLean for all, young and old.” The 24-month renovation and expansion project increased the Center’s footprint by an additional 7,256 square feet and added three new meeting and activity rooms. A new stairway to the second floor of the building, where The Alden Theatre’s balcony and the McLean Project for the Arts are located, was added as was a new, glass-enclosed courtyard at the center of the building. Sachs’ name will be added to the list of award recipients on the “Friend in Deed” plaque displayed in the Center’s main lobby. 2019 FALL PROGRAM GUIDE

An MCC Staffer in the Spotlight Jennifer Garrett, Technical Director The Alden

After almost 30 years of serving as Technical Director of The Alden Theatre, Jennifer Garrett still cannot accurately predict what might happen when she shows up for work. “On any given day, I could be writing specifications for an upgrade or maintenance project, looking at technical riders for artists performing here in the future; advancing this year’s performances with artists or their agents; or designing staging and lighting for an event taking place that day—not to mention taking care of the basic administrative duties County employees have,” she said. “It never grows old.” Despite the challenges, Garrett’s love for her job and her commitment to making The Alden exceptional are evident. The Alden’s tagline “Small Stage, Big Talent” rings true as the theater presents more than 75 shows each year, including such famous entertainers as Chita Rivera and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Before joining the staff here, Garrett earned a B.A. in Theatre from the University of Maryland, College Park and was the technical director of the famed Duke Ellington School of the Arts from 1985 to 1990. “I love theater technology. Being able to contribute to making The Alden a first-class venue, while keeping its intimacy and friendly vibes gives me immense satisfaction,” she said. “And, yes, I am a geek.” Garrett said she is “extremely fortunate” to have a great staff (Assistant Technical Director Justin King and Theatre Technician Cat Salisbury-Valerien). “Together we strive to ensure that artists and patrons experience the best the theater can offer,” she said. The excellence of the theater has been recognized regionally and in the national publication, Stage Directions, which featured an article on The Alden in September 2007. In her spare time, Garrett studies her family’s history and has discovered ancestors from Germany and the Germanna Colony of Virginia. A self-proclaimed “cat lady” (she currently has seven), she also has an interest in alternative religions and herbalism. You can contact Garrett at 703-744-9357 or jennifer.garrett@fairfaxcounty.gov.

2019 FALL PROGRAM GUIDE

Instructor Spotlight

Chef John Bauhs, Culinary Arts Instructor For some, cooking feels like climbing Mount Everest but for MCC Culinary Arts Instructor Chef John Bauhs, “cooking life” is a fantastic voyage. That voyage includes the far reaches of our globe, including Antarctica, Bangladesh, Cuba and Norway. Bauhs served for four months at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Antarctica (2011-2012), and recently completed a trip to northern Norway where he explored Arctic geography, the people of the Arctic and their delicious food—all under a 24-hour sun! He also visited the southern village where his grandmother was born. A native of Portage, Wis., he received a bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. After a successful business career, he toured nationally as a professional drummer with bands such as The Useless Playboys of Richmond, Va. Today, the band’s lead singer, Mike Geier, is better known as Puddles the Clown (Puddles Pity Party). After leaving the road, Bauhs graduated from culinary school and began his worldwide cooking voyage. He said he has been honored to teach at MCC for 15 years and “For people of all ages, learning love for food is so vital, so important.”

The harvest is here, and we’re cooking up new workshops for Fall Poultry, Fall Fish, Fall Vegetables, Fall Cookies and more! Pages 12–13.

8

In recent years, he has received public safety training and is currently a member of the Community Emergency Response Team for Montgomery County, Md. He is a certified CPR and First Aid instructor and deploys to countries and territories that have experienced disasters as part of a team. “Being able to provide a warm meal to people who are experiencing a need has added a deeper meaning to what I do professionally,” he said. “I teach to continue the gift of love for food passed to me by my grandparents and to share that passion with a new generation of cooks.”

DOG TRAINING CLASSES FOR ADULTS

Dog Solve was started by police and military K-9 instructors to offer the best in dog obedience training methods to the general public. Our courses not only provide training in general obedience, but unlike other training programs, we offer real life situational training drills that put a realism in your day-to-day interaction with your dog. It is our philosophy that the student should choose their style of training methods, rather than the usual “one style fits all.” We address behavior problems, handling skills and tasks that you will not obtain in our competitor’s courses. Dog Solve instructors are government certified K-9 instructors. For more information, please visit www.dogsolve.com.

Beginner Dog Obedience

$274/$228 MCC district residents

Behavior-related, problem-solving methods will be addressed, as well.

Music Together®, an internationally-recognized music and movement program, engages early childhood music development for infant, toddler and preschool children and their parents and other primary caregivers through mixed-aged classes. It pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally-appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement, and it's fun! The Music Together approach develops every child's birthright of basic music competence by encouraging the actual experiencing of music through playful activities rather than the learning of concepts or information about music. Please note: Instructors may be subject change without notification. It is not the responsibility of McLean Community Center or its instructors to make up, prorate or reimburse any missed classes due to personal absences and/or schedule conflicts. Stemtree Coding with Fun Students do not need previous computer programming experience. Today, most children use computers and manipulate media, but few of them know how to create the media or software. This class will teach students how to create and develop computer programs (games, stories, etc.) instead of just playing with them. Students will learn computer programming concepts in a fun and interactive way while sharing their own interactive stories, animations, games, music and art. Students will have an opportunity to think creatively, communicate clearly, use technology fluently and collaborate effectively. They will also create their own computer programs to implement computer games and combine multiple topics (science, engineering, teamwork). Instructor: Stemtree Staff.

You will use elements of papermaking and printmaking as you construct your own books. In addition to the creation of a unique form that combines both 2D and 3D approaches to work, this course will also introduce the discussion of book functionality and aesthetics.

Working from their sketches, plein air paintings and photos, you will learn to create larger, more complete finished studio paintings. Develop a stronger understanding of the elements that unify a finished picture while you sharpen your visual communication skills. Perspective, composition, value, light and shade, color harmony and simplification will be covered.

Previous writing instruction is strongly recommended. Writers of fiction, nonfiction (including memoir), or poetry are all welcome. Critiquing the work of others is fine training for critiquing your own work and, of course, having the input of other readers is invaluable. Whatever your genre, other writers will bring their own experiences and preferences to the table. Each session will deal with critique of work submitted by three attendees (up to 10 pages each). Work will be emailed by its author to each class member and the instructor prior to meeting. There will be brief teaching moments if the instructor sees an issue that should be addressed, and critique guidance will be provided. Marked-up copies will be given to the authors at the end of their reviews. Instructor: D. A. Spruzen.

2019 FALL PROGRAM GUIDE

Fall Will Be in the Mountains

Asheville, North Carolina • Sunday, Oct. 20 – Thursday, Oct. 24 Asheville, North Carolina, is at its very best in the month of October. The colorful fall leaves and spectacular scenery look like an artist’s palette from the rolling rivers to the towering mountain peaks. Asheville is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Day 1

Photographs courtesy of ExploreAsheville.com.

The tour group stops for the night at the Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon, Va. This luxury Inn with its colonial ambiance and delicious food sets the mood for our upcoming adventures. After having lunch on our own, we will be treated to a production of “The Producers” at the famed Barter Theatre. Dinner that night will be at the hotel.

Day 2 Monday starts with breakfast and a picturesque drive to Asheville. After a North Carolina barbecue lunch at Buxton Hall, we will meet Ken Richards, our local guide and author. Ken will lead us on a comprehensive tour to introduce us to the various areas and neighborhoods of Asheville. Late in the afternoon, we will check into the AC Hotel that sits right in the middle of historic Asheville. Dinner that night will be at our hotel.

Day 4 Wednesday begins with breakfast at the hotel and a visit to the River Arts District of Asheville, where we will tour the various working art studios and see a demonstration. Lunch will be in the arts district at the Smoky Park Supper Club that has a unique architectural structure as well as great food. Next is the spectacular vista of the Blue Ridge Parkway with a stop at the visitor’s center where the award-winning film, “The Blue Ridge Parkway: America’s Favorite Journey” will be shown. A must-visit on the parkway is the Folk Art Center owned and operated by the Highland Craft Guild. Dinner will be at Rhubarb, known for its farm-to-table, New American fare and whose head chef was nominated for the James Beard Award.

Day 5 Day 3 After breakfast on Tuesday, Ken Richards will join us again giving us information on the Biltmore Estate before we begin our tour. The magnificent Biltmore Estate is the crown jewel of Asheville. The mansion was completed in 1895 by the famed Gilded Age architect Richard Morris Hunt for George Vanderbilt. The Biltmore is the largest private home in America. We will tour the house with an audio guide, narrated by the curators of the Biltmore, that will enhance our experience. Lunch will be at the Deerpark Restaurant, which is located on this grand estate. Dinner Tuesday night will be on our own and there are many good restaurants near the hotel from which to choose.

46

An early start after breakfast on Thursday morning finds us heading back to Virginia with fond memories of Asheville and its history, architecture, fine dining and the not-to-be-forgotten views of this fascinating destination.
