CAMP McLEAN 2023

cLean Community Center’s dynamic Camp McLean provides a wide array of experiences and fun for your children. Children ages 3 to 10 can enjoy trips and performances and explore the world of fitness, fun and much, much more! During each two-week session, our sta of highly trained counselors and specialists will lead campers on some unforgettable adventures and provide enrichment opportunities from crafts to music to just plain summer fun!

Camp will be held at a Fairfax County Public School in McLean (TBD).

SESSION I: June 26-July 7 (Closed July 3 and 4) SESSION II: July 10-July 21 SESSION III: July 24-August 4

9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

For children ages three to four years old.

Camp participants must be toilet-trained and have turned three years old by June 2, 2023.

Each session will have one in-house entertainment event and one to two days of water play per week. Campers will participate in arts and crafts, outdoor play, story time, singing, dancing, small group games and other activities. Campers always remain on site. The campers-to-sta ratio is one adult to six campers. Maximum enrollment is limited to 24 campers per session

Camp McLean Refund Policy

• All withdrawals, refunds and cancellation requests MUST be submitted in writing to registrar@mcleancenter.org

• The center will issue a full refund when a camp program is canceled by the center.

• Written requests for withdrawals and/or cancellations received before Friday, April 7, 2023, will receive a full refund.

• Patrons who submit requests for withdrawals and/or cancellations after Friday, April 7, 2023, will be charged a $100 processing fee, which will be deducted from the total amount paid.

• If a replacement can be found to fill the space vacated by the cancellation and/or withdrawal, the $100 processing fee will be refunded to the patron.

• If a replacement cannot be found, a refund of the processing fee will not be issued.

Camper Forms

Camper forms should be submitted one month prior to the start of camp. This gives you time to complete any missing or otherwise incomplete forms prior to camp.

Please Note: All forms must be complete and on hand at camp before your child will be admitted to camp. No exceptions will be made.

• A current and completed Certification of Immunization

• A Commonwealth of Virginia School Entrance Physical Examination Form signed by a physician. A copy of the form is acceptable. Any camper under the age of six years old must submit a Physical Examination form that is dated after August 1, 2022.

• In accordance with Virginia law, camp sta members are required to witness a document with proof of your child’s age. You must bring one of the following items in when you register your child for camp. Note: Please do not leave the originals.

Acceptable documents include:

1. A certified copy of his or her birth certificate

2. A U.S. Passport (or State Department-Issued documentation)

3. A Virginia-based school report card

How to Register

Registration begins on Monday, Feb. 6, 2023. Spaces fill quickly, so please register as soon as possible to ensure your space.

Be first in line, register online! Online registration starts at midnight. Go to mcleancenter.org and click on the green “Register” button or the seven-digit activity code associated with the activity you seek. You also may register over the phone or in person at the McLean Community Center (703-790-0123) or the Old Firehouse (703-448- 8336).

Camp McLean registrations and camper forms will not be accepted prior to Monday, Feb. 6, 2023.

Chess Camp

In this camp, campers play and learn chess with Magnus Academy (formerly Silver Knights Enrichment)! We've taught 100,000 children, including national champions, but most students are beginners looking to learn and have fun. Campers are divided in groups by skill levels. Activities include learning the rules, openings, tactics, endgames, studying master games and playing lots of games against other students. Campers will take breaks for snacks and fresh air and have lunch and recess from noon to 1 p.m. At the end of the week, campers receive a t-shirt and chess set. All equipment is provided.

Sign up now for this highly popular and e ective etiquette class. On day one, students prepare a variety of foods, then sit and enjoy the rewards of their labor while

Popstar Hip-Hop Camp

Your budding Broadway entertainer will learn exciting routines to hit musicals such as “Aladdin,” “The Lion King,” “Newsies” and “Annie.” Campers will spend this fun-filled week learning age-appropriate songs and dances that are currently playing on Broadway. Pre-Teen Dance Camp

This camp is geared towards preteens who would like to keep up their technique over the summer while exploring all genres of dance. Fencing: Introduction to Olympic Sport Foil, Sabre and Epee

No previous training needed. Known as the “physical game of chess,” Olympic sport fencing provides a tremendous physical and mental workout for students of all ages and athletic abilities. As one of the safest sports, fencing makes fitness fun! It builds muscle strength, provides greater cardiovascular workouts, endurance, coordination and speed. Campers learn the fundamentals, footwork, handwork and strategy, using safety-tipped swords, protective jackets, masks and gloves. A registration form must be completed and signed by a parent/guardian.

LEGO Robotics: Wild Safari

Explore the animal kingdom in this WeDo 2.0 LEGO Robotics Camp where campers build and code swinging monkeys, fierce silverback gorillas, cute koalas and more robots that climb, move, bite and roll! At the end of the week, campers receive a T-shirt.

LEGO Robotics: Bot vs. Bot

Take the WeDo 2.0 LEGO robot challenge with Magnus Academy in this fun camp. You’ll build and program Sumo wrestling bots, bots that play ball and bots that compete in a demolition derby! At the end of the week, campers receive a T-shirt. Campers should bring a lunch, snack and drink each day.

Mad Science: Flight Academy

Calling all pilots! As a Mad Science flight cadet in training, you will discover how airplanes fly. Test your airplane’s performance in a wind tunnel. Build your own kite, stunt plane and model rocket. Ride the air on a Hovercraft. Discover how hot air balloons, blimps and parachutes work.

Eurekas! The Inventor’s Camp

Children will overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from famous inventors and most important of all—their minds. With a little bit of ingenuity, children will create catapults and forts, construct working light sticks to take home and assemble a set of circuits with batteries and light bulbs. While Thomas Edison said, “Invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration," this camp is 100% FUN!

Crazy Chemworks

Shake up a flask of fun in the lab and become a junior chemist! Learn to recognize chemical reactions and mix up a few reactive ingredients for some sensational results. Check out the colors of chemistry with the power of PH paper and create a stopper-popping reaction. Probe the properties of light and discover some unusual applications of glow-in-the-dark technology. Campers have a blast as they make crazy concoctions and step inside a real cloud created by dry ice.

Science in Motion

Discover how things move with science. Take apart pellets to see what an owl cannot digest! Join a team of camper engineers and build bridges, domes, cubes and pyramids. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”

Campers will investigate how Shakespeare guides actors through text and exercise the actor's toolkit to explore multiple characters in an ensemble performance. Camp will culminate with a performance for friends and family.

Week 1: June 26-30

Mask-Querade!

Masks are an important aspect in storytelling and expression around the world. Campers will explore various cultures around the world and create masks inspired by animals and figures through mediums like paper mâché, clay and more!

Explore artwork by "The Masters" (Van Gogh, Kahlo, Pollock and more!) while having fun with a variety of art media.

Week 2: July 5-7

Crazy Wacky Sculptures

Create sculptural creatures and marvelous mobiles using upcycled everyday materials in this fun mini session. Beads, fabric, feathers, sequins, yarn, cellophane and other cool materials will all be used to create your most unique sculptural inventions. We will explore the works of El  Anatsui, Debra Butterfield and Judy Pfa .

Dynamic Art

Art is beyond stagnant processes such as still life. In this camp, we will explore the dynamism of art through techniques that focus on motion and fluidity. Campers will engage in projects such as flipbooks, spin art, art pours and much

Exploring Color

Campers will delve into the world of hue, shade, tint, value and intensity. Starting from the “color wheel,” we will draw and drip paint on paper and canvas with colorful layers of paint, oil pastel and collage. We will experiment with di erent types of 2D printing and use pencil, pen, watercolor, acrylic and mixed media. Learn about exciting artists such as Jackson Pollock, Morris Louis and other contemporary artists who used various techniques in their works.

Week 5: July 24-28

H d Building with Clay

Explore the exciting world of hand building with clay. We also will create beautiful decorative patterns with various sculpting tools and stencils and learn a variety of techniques, including slab, pinch and coil construction. Campers will take projects home as we are using non-firing clay.

Week 7: August 7-11

Celestial Art

Explore all things planetary and alien during this week of artistic space travel. We will look closely at some of the beautiful and colorful photographs of space. Deriving our inspiration from the plants, stars, galaxies and other celestial bodies, we will create our own intergalactic masterpieces using new techniques.

Week 6: July 31-August 4

Pop Art

Campers will explore works by “pop” artists Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg and others of the 1960s and 1970s. Campers will then create their own pop art works using found objects, commercial packaging (save those candy wrappers and soup can labels!) and other everyday commercial symbols. Discover color and composition working from everyday objects using drawing, painting and collage techniques.

Comic Book

Delve into the world of comic books by making your own and looking at the work of professional authors. We will learn what works both from a compositional and storytelling perspective. Campers will look at some of the most famous heroes and villains in comic book history for inspiration. Beginning with pen and ink drawings for our storyboards, we will add sequential and close-up images as part of creating our own exciting comic books. In addition to classic comic books, we will construct flip books to show our own comic style in motion.

Week 3: July 10-14

Under the Sea

There is so much that we don’t know about what’s under the sea, which allows for an abundance of creative freedom. In this camp, we’ll explore nautical themes such as animals, mythos and nature. Campers will work with watercolors, sand, recyclable materials and more throughout the week.

Week 2: July 5-7

STEAM, Art+N@ure

This camp focuses on the interrelations of art with science, technology, engineering and math. Campers will explore nature and biological imagery through watercolor, ink and acrylic.

Campers will take supervised nature walks into McLean Central Park for plein air sketching sessions of flora and fauna. They also will have the opportunity to collect leaves, flowers and other natural found objects to incorporate into their works.

Week 4: July 17-21

Surrealist

This camp is perfect for our campers with large imaginations and creativity, as the surreal art movement is all about creative expression. Students will learn about the Surrealist movement and look at works by Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo and other movement pioneers. Campers will create artworks that could only exist in their dreams through 2-D and 3-D means.

Screen Printing

Join us for this first step into fabric design. Campers will dive into the world of screen printing and design their own shirts, fabrics and more!

Magical & Mythical Cre@ures

Do you love stories about dragons, fairies, unicorns and other magical and mythical creatures? We will recreate some of these characters in our own imaginative masterpieces!

Campers will use color pencils, markers, paint, beads, feathers, special papers and other materials to construct 2D and 3D artworks starring our favorite characters either from literature or entirely from our imaginations.

MPA’s Counselor in Training Program

14-18 years   Monday-Friday, 8:45 a.m.-4:15 p.m.  $395 for each two-week program. Minimum commitment of two weeks required. MPA’s Counselor in Training (CIT) Program has been developed to enrich the experience of older campers at our summer art camps. CITs, chosen by MPA to participate, will experience working with younger children in a day camp setting. This program is designed to encourage teaching and leadership skills. CITs will assist in planning and leading activities for our young campers. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in art, teaching and developing their leadership styles under the supervision of MPA’s master faculty.

he end of the school year is quickly approaching. Not to worry! The Old Firehouse has a summer program that will keep your child active and happy all summer. The Old Firehouse Summer Camp o ers your child eight weeks of fantastic trips and memorable experiences. Be sure to sign up early as these weeks sell out fast.

There are three convenient ways to register: online, by phone or in person at the Old Firehouse Center, 1440 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, Va. 22101.

The 2023 Old Firehouse Summer Participant Contract should be submitted no later than Friday, June 9, 2023. All other forms and waivers will be sent via email and will also be available at the Old Firehouse prior to your camp week.

Camp will be held Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Return times on certain trips will be later due to the distance of the trip’s location. Trips depart and return to the Old Firehouse Teen Center. Campers may bring additional money for snacks and incidentals each day.

Please Note: Trips may change due to weather conditions, location availability or other unforeseeable issues. Old Firehouse camp sta will make every e ort to ensure replacement trips are as similar as possible to the trips originally planned.

Old Firehouse Summer Camp Refund Policy

• If a camp program is canceled by the center, a full refund will be issued.

• Requests for withdrawals and/or cancellations received before Friday, April 7, 2023, will receive a full refund.

• Requests for withdrawals and/or cancellations received after Friday, April 7, 2023, will have an $100 processing fee deducted from the total refund paid to the patron.

• If a replacement can be found to fill the space vacated by the cancellation and/or withdrawal, the $100 processing fee will be refunded to the patron.

• If a replacement cannot be found, a refund of the processing fee will not be issued.
