2021 SUMMER PROGRAM GUIDE

WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District 1A-Dranesville). Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio, a multipurpose classroom and catering kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings with a nominal charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available. The Center also operates the award-winning Old Firehouse Center, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. in downtown McLean.

I Chose to Accept the Mission; So Glad I Did As I retire and prepare to leave MCC, I am reminded of MCC’s mission and purpose, and I am proud to have had the privilege of serving our residents for the last 11 years. During that time, I have worked to maintain the high standards our mission and vision have set in meeting our public's needs. To Provide a Sense of Community by Undertaking Programs As programmers, we create opportunities with whatever space or equipment we are given. We listen and gather information about our community in order to address the needs of the people we serve. This is forever changing, which challenges us to be continually creating new programs and opportunities for recreation and to educate our residents. During my tenure, our programmers have offered a rich variety of programs for every age group. Assisting Community Organizations MCC currently services 24 local nonprofit organizations that hold their regular meetings here. We also provide room set-ups in multiple rooms at the community center to support their community efforts and projects. We allocate these opportunities equally and fairly to all. Furnishing Facilities for Civic, Cultural, Educational, Recreational and Social Activities Calling this a “community center” is somewhat misleading. We often have people come here with the expectation of finding a gym, pool or fitness center, which are mostly found in community recreation centers. This facility aligns more closely to that of a civic or cultural center, where people come for a purpose to meet, to learn in class offerings, to experience cultural stimulation and to gather in organized family fun activities. I have many beautiful memories of happy families who have participated in our programs, of dedicated board members who have donated their time and talents to help us reach success and of a hard-working staff who have committed themselves to enhancing the community, one program at a time. It has been a wonderful ride. My hope is that MCC will continue to thrive and reach new levels of accomplishment. Thank you for all the love and support you have given me. I could not have done it without you.

I’m a McLean boy, I attended Churchill Road Elementary, Cooper Middle and Langley High schools, Longwood University where I played Division 1 soccer and obtained my master’s from Oklahoma University. Growing up in McLean was vital to my maturity and development and I ultimately returned. I’ve been involved in the community in a variety of ways—coaching McLean youth football and basketball, sponsoring McLean 5k and playing for McLean Youth Sports. I choose to run for the MCC board to be a vital part of the community and stay connected to my roots while helping in any way I can.

Lisa Mariam

McLean Community Center was a big factor in our decision to move to McLean in 2002. Attending classes, performances and events, I appreciate MCC’s welcoming atmosphere and outstanding programs that connect me to the community. I’m interested in serving on the Board to help guide MCC through this exciting period of transition to reopening with a new Director. I offer extensive professional and volunteer experience with organizations including ArtsFairfax, the National Gallery of Art, Girl Scouts and school PTAs. I look forward to supporting strong McLean traditions and exploring new opportunities to engage residents of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

My name is Rasheq Rahman. As a 25+-year McLean resident with a small business proudly headquartered in downtown and kids attending McLean public schools, the McLean Community Center (MCC)’s world-class activities from children’s learning to date nights at The Alden have enriched my family life for generations. I seek a seat on the MCC Governing Board with deep gratitude and the belief that my 20 years of diverse experience in finance (Goldman Sachs), strategy (IBM) and education (Yale, Virginia Tech) enable me to lead the MCC to be ever resilient, innovative and inclusive during this time of change.

Shivani Saboo

My name is Shivani Saboo and I am running for MCC Governing Board. I have lived in McLean all my life and wear my hometown with a badge of pride! I graduated from McLean High School in 2016 and recently graduated from the University of Virginia in 2020. As our town welcomes increasingly more young professionals, I hope to represent those voices and help MCC integrate more with the young adult community. Additionally, as an Asian-American, I hope to represent immigrant communities and push for increased celebration of the diverse cultures represented in McLean.

Allison Stratton

allison.c.stratton@gmail.com

I’m excited to run for the board of the McLean Community Center because I believe in the difference a robust and well-functioning community can make in the lives of its residents. A former military spouse, I’ve volunteered for leadership positions in service organizations and seen firsthand how beneficial these groups can be. My background in higher education and passion for lifelong learning gives me a unique perspective on the types of activities that might be attractive to our stakeholders. Now that our family has settled in McLean permanently, I’m thrilled to have a chance to contribute to our community’s wellbeing.

McLEAN COMMUNITY CENTER | 703-790-0123

CENTER NEWS MCC Executive Director George Sachs Announces His Retirement McLean Community Center (MCC) Executive Director George Sachs is announcing his retirement effective Friday, May 7, 2021. At the time of his retirement, Sachs will have served as the executive director at MCC for 11 years (2010-2021). The MCC Governing Board is conducting a national search for his replacement with hopes of identifying his replacement by the end of March 2021, to allow time for a transfer of institutional knowledge from Sachs to the new director. Sachs said during his tenure, “There was never a dull moment or lack of challenges.” Among them was his successful leadership of the recent renovation and expansion of the center’s 40-year-old Ingleside Ave. facility. The five-year, $8-million-dollar project involved securing an architectural firm to design and plan the renovation, working with Fairfax County staff to secure contracted services, closing the center for two years and relocating programs and services, and the entire MCC staff to four separate locations in McLean, overseeing the construction from beginning to end, returning programs and staff to the facility upon the renovation completion and creating a new slate of programs and services in the newly expanded facility.

Sachs returned to Fairfax County in 2009 and was hired to manage MCC’s Old Firehouse Teen Center. A year later, the MCC Governing Board appointed him the community center’s new Executive Director. At age 70 George has decided to enter his next phase in life, retirement, and plans to now become an active participant in a variety of programs and activities similar to the ones he has been directing for the past 47 years of his career. For more information, call MCC at 703-790-0123, TTY: 711.

Sachs’ career in the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services profession started in 1974, when he was hired as a Recreation Specialist with the Fairfax County Department of Recreation. He later was hired by the Fairfax County Park Authority and opened the first RECenter at Wakefield Park, now named Audrey Moore RECenter. He left the county in 1982 to open the new Fieldhouse Sports Complex at George Mason University and managed the university’s recreation and sports facilities. While there, he also became an adjunct professor for the Department of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services. In 1991, he was hired as the Deputy Director of MCC under Executive Director Page Shelp. Four years later, he moved to South Carolina, where he owned and operated what grew to be a chain of five recreation, health and fitness centers.

Clockwise from top: George at the Center prior to renovation; George at a Gov. Bd. Planning Meeting; Kevin Dent, former MCC Graphic Artist Hussain Mohammed and George with VRPS Award; Governing Board Member Alicia Plerhoples, Virginia Delegate Kathleen Murphy (D), MCC Gov. Bd member Paul Kohlenberger, George, Bob Alden, Delegate Rip Sullivan, Supervisor John Foust at Open House ribbon cutting for renovation; Sachs with LERN Award.

2021 SUMMER PROGRAM GUIDE

An MCC Staffer in the Spotlight Christian Hayes Youth/Instructional Event Manager Christian Hayes is not only someone who can have fun—he creates it. That is exactly what he does for MCC, working with instructors to provide as many quality programs as possible for the community. “The best part of my job is seeing the community happy,” he said. “I enjoy seeing a big turnout at each of our programs.” Before starting his new position with MCC in 2020, Hayes graduated from Old Dominion University in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management with a minor in Communications and Marketing. He is currently completing his master’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting and Finance at George Mason University. Prior to joining the staff at MCC, Hayes worked for the Sports International Football Camp in Laurel, Md. He had the opportunity to travel across the country and work with professional football players on teams such as the Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and San Diego Chargers. After leaving Sports International, he spent four years with Montgomery Village Foundation in Montgomery County, Md., where he was able to acquire a better understanding of what it means to be a recreation professional. As one who spends his free time watching and playing sports, it comes as no surprise that one of Hayes’ favorite aspects of his job is overseeing T-Ball. “It’s an amazing feeling seeing the children come into T-ball not knowing much about the sport and then after the program is over, they know the positions and how to hit,” he said. “I also enjoy hearing the kids say, ‘Hi Coach Christian.’” Christian can be contacted at 703-744-9351 or by email at christian.hayes@fairfaxcounty.gov.

2021 SUMMER PROGRAM GUIDE

CLASSES Instructor Spotlight Kevin Healy Police K9 Unit (Retired) For MCC Dog Obedience Instructor Kevin Healy, the saying, "dogs are a man's best friend," certainly rings true. Currently the headmaster for Beginner and Advanced Dog Obedience classes at MCC, Healy’s expertise and passion for his work is remarkable. Having worked with dogs since 1980, Healy has a wealth of experience in behavior training in civilian, police and military fields. “I first got interested in K-9 training growing up in Baltimore County, as I lived about a block away from the Baltimore County Police K-9 Center and went there regularly to watch training,” he said. He began his career as a police K-9 handler, training and recertifying over 500 Police and Corrections and Sheriff's Office K-9 units from 30 law enforcement agencies in four different states. During that time, he also took on an instructor role for civilian dog obedience classes for Ocean City Parks and Recreation from 1984 to 2000. “After getting hired by Ocean City Recreation Department, a K-9 position opened up and I was chosen," said Healy. "A few years later, I got state certified as a K-9 instructor and was also asked by the Ocean City Recreation Department to teach civilian classes on my evenings off.” Shortly thereafter, Healy spent two years from 2004-2006 as a certified explosive detector K-9 trainer in Baghdad, Iraq, overseeing 100 detector dogs detailed to the United States Army. He has since resumed offering civilian dog obedience classes through the MCC, Arlington County Parks and Recreation, and Providence Community Center while simultaneously running his own obedience business, Dog Solve, LLC.
