McLean CoMMunity Center

Who We are, What We Do

The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District One A-Dranesville).

Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio and a classroom/commercial kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings without charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available in the lobby. The Center also operates the award-winning Old Firehouse Teen Center, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. in downtown McLean.

Our Core Purpose

Celebrants included Pamela Danner, John Foust, Gail Nields, Paul Kohlenberger, Janie Strauss, Lilla Richards, George Sachs, and Page Shelp.

25th Anniversary Celebration of the Teen Center

On Tuesday, Oct. 13, dozens of residents joined the McLean Historical Society and the McLean Community Center (MCC) in commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the Old Firehouse Teen Center. In his remarks, Dranesville District Supervisor John Foust noted his pleasure that a historic building was being used to serve both area teens and others, including the Lewinsville Senior Center and the SPARC program.

MCC Board Chair Paul Kohlenberger, who is president of the McLean Historical Society, made a presentation about early efforts by the community to serve the teen population, including a proposed temporary MCC teen center that would have been located behind Redeemer Lutheran Church. He then introduced Janie Strauss, who, as chair of the McLean Citizens Association’s Education Committee, had been a strong early advocate of the project. Joining Strauss in remembering the Teen Center’s founding were former Governing Board members Pamela Danner and Gail Nields, as well as former MCC Executive Director Page Shelp, and former Dranesville Supervisor Lilla Richards. George Sachs, MCC Executive Director, reviewed current operations of the Teen Center and efforts to ensure its continued strength. The McLean Community Center thanks the many individuals and organizations that helped make the Old Firehouse Teen Center a reality, especially Pierce Architecture, the Friends of the McLean Community Center and the McLean Community Foundation.

The mission of the McLean Community Center is to provide a sense of community by undertaking programs; assisting community organizations; and furnishing facilities for civic, cultural, educational, recreational and social activities apportioned fairly to all residents of Small District 1, Dranesville.

Vision The McLean Community Center is a “hub” for McLean’s Community!

Siege Museum, Petersburg, Va.

petersburg, virginia Wednesday, Apr. 20, 2016 Petersburg, Virginia, has a rich and diverse history which begins not long after the Jamestown settlement. on this trip, we will visit three of its more interesting attractions: Blandford Church, the Siege Museum and Centre Hill Mansion. This city became famous during the Civil War because it was the lifeline to Richmond and the site of a 292-day siege that ended the war with the surrender of general Robert E. Lee. The Siege Museum interprets civilian life before, during and after the Civil War. Centre Hill Mansion was one of the most opulent residences in Petersburg and is an excellent example of greek Revival, early Federal and later Colonial styles of architecture. Blandford Church is the crown jewel of the city in that it features 15 Louis Comfort Tiffany windows, all in memory of Confederate soldiers from various southern states. Lunch will be at one of the charming and enticing restaurants that frequent the streets of this historic town. Sign up early, bring a friend and enjoy a full day of history, comradery and fine food. Activity No. 7004.316 $142 per person/$137 MCC district residents, which includes deluxe motor coach transportation, all admissions and guided tours, delicious lunch, a morning snack and driver’s tip. McLean TraveLer TraveLer McLean Sunday, June 26, 2016 “Kinky Boots” won the 2013 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best original Score and Best Choreography. The show features music and lyrics by Cindi Lauper. In this age of phenomenal musicals, one cannot do much better than that! The musical is taken from a 2005 film by the same name and is the true story of a man named Charlie Price who inherits a shoe factory from his father. To save the business, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with a cabaret performer who is also a drag queen and together they save the business with a line of highheeled boots. Besides being outrageously funny, the music took off and the show album premiered at number one on the Billboard Cast Albums Chart. The music and songs are irresistible and the dancers literally bounce across the stage. our pre-matinee brunch will be at Filomena’s Ristorante in historic georgetown. Theatre American Shakespeare Center on tour’s Shakespeare Weekend at the Alden www.americanshakespearecenter.com Back by popular demand, ASC on Tour brings their fastpaced, super-accessible interpretations of the Bard’s best. ASC recreates the theatre experience the way Shakespeare’s audiences would have enjoyed it—with the lights on. Audience members are encouraged to sit on stage and, at times, even interact with the performers. And get here early. Just as in Shakespeare’s time, before the show the cast sings and plays contemporary music related to the play, but in ASC’s case it’s Weezer and James Brown. Buy tickets to all three plays and “Brush up Your Shakespeare” for $88/$50 MCC district residents. *Join us on Jan. 21 for a panel discussion on getting the most out of your ASC on Tour experience. See Speakers and Education on page 15 for more details.

“the Importance of Being Earnest” Saturday, Jan. 23, 2 p.m.; Live music starts at 1:30 p.m. $35/$20 MCC district residents oscar Wilde’s brilliant and wicked comic masterpiece defines wit and style. This “trivial comedy for serious people” is at once blissfully silly and outrageously shrewd. one-hundred twenty years after its first performance, “The Importance of Being Earnest” continues to delight audiences with its playful language, charming characters and biting look at contemporary society, and ASC on Tour’s production will have you in absolute hysterics.

“the Life of King Henry V”

“Julius Caesar” Friday, Jan. 22, 8 p.m.; Live music starts at 7:30 p.m. $35/$20 MCC district residents In this profoundly moving, breathtaking and deeply human play, Shakespeare shows us a world on fire; a world turned upside down; a world where some of history’s most famous men commit horrific crimes in the name of patriotism and honor. “Julius Caesar” is a dazzling thrill ride of betrayal, violence and perhaps most surprisingly, love.

Saturday, Jan. 23, 8 p.m.; Live music starts at 7:30 p.m. $35/$20 MCC district residents The story of England’s hero-king and the greatest upset in European military history is Shakespeare’s finale to his great history plays. More than that, “Henry V”—at once touching, heroic, savage and comic—explores the nature of greatness and its connection to theatre; and, perhaps more than any other of Shakespeare’s works, it makes the audience part of the story.

Music Together® Music Together®, an internationally-recognized music and movement program, engages early childhood music development for infant, toddler and pre-school children and their parents and other primary caregivers through mixed-aged classes. It pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally-appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement and—it’s fun! The Music Together approach develops every child’s birthright of basic music competence by encouraging the actual experiencing of music through playful activities rather than the learning of concepts or information about music. Instructor: Music Together® Staff. Please note: Instructors may be subject change without notification.
