2019 SUMMER PROGRAM GUIDE
WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE DO The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District 1A-Dranesville). Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio, a multipurpose classroom and catering kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings with a nominal charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available.
Going Places in New Spaces Hello neighbor! Have you had a chance to come to the new and improved MCC? If not, let me take this opportunity to invite you personally to stop by and see the new spaces and places in our building. Yes, we are finally back home on Ingleside Avenue and we’re ready to provide you with a new level of service. We recently held a successful joint event with TEDxTysons that brought many first-time visitors into our doors. This signals the start of what we hope will be many new opportunities to reach diverse segments of our population. We are committed to a continual improvement process, so look for positive changes in our offerings as we continue to settle into our new home. McLean Day 2019 on May 18, marks the beginning of the summer season for us. Kids, young and old alike, can enjoy a few more hours of fun prior to the big day at the ride preview from 2-7 p.m. on Friday, May 17. Also, make sure to download the McLean Day app to receive up-to-the-minute alerts. And, if you are a resident of Small District 1A—Dranesville, please to take a few moments as you enter the park to vote in our Governing Board Election. Your support is necessary to ensure an effective election. After several years away, we are so happy to be returning to Langley High School for our 4th of July Fireworks Celebration! We hope to see you there. And of course, what is summer without our outdoor concert series in McLean Central Park? The Alden has lined up an impressive group of performers with diverse music styles, so there’s sure to be something you will enjoy. See you at the gazebo! Sincerely,
The Center also operates the award-winning Old Firehouse Teen Center, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. in downtown McLean. George Sachs Executive Director McLean Community Center
My friend and colleague, Leila Gordon, who is the executive director of Reston Community Center, joined me at our Renovation Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.

2019 SUMMER PROGRAM GUIDE
Meet the Candidates!
Listed in alphabetical order.
Adult Candidates THREE POSITIONS OPEN Maria Foderaro-Guertin • mariaformccboard@gmail.com
I’m excited to be a candidate for the board of the McLean Community Center, which has served my family for 14 years. We have greatly enjoyed the variety of events and offerings. I am a foreign language and history teacher with broad experience in management with companies and nonprofits. My career spans many organizations where I continued to advance my core values and culture of volunteerism and hard work. The newly renovated center can become a hub of activity for all ages. With your vote, I will continue to work with our board to expand offerings for our vibrant community.
Suzanne Le Menestrel • suzanne4mclean@gmail.com
I have lived in McLean with my family for eight years. I am honored to be running for the Governing Board. A lifelong theatre fan, I avidly support The Alden Theatre and the MCC’s many arts programs. I am deeply committed to serving my community and the broader Washington, D.C. region. I am on the board of directors for the Prince George’s Child Resource Center, volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, mentor teen Girl Scouts working on their Gold Awards and contribute my expertise in child and youth development programs, policies and research to national advisory groups.
Sun Park • sunpark94@gmail.com
I am running to amplify the voices of young professionals. Having grown up in McLean and been on the board in the past, I understand both our community and this Center’s purpose. I want to shape the strategic direction of the MCC to reflect the changes in McLean. My priorities are to increase programming targeted at the growing young professional demographic, encourage more diverse cultural events sponsored by the Center and ensure that the funds allocated to the Center maximize the benefit of all. I’m committed to fostering a strong community and am excited for this opportunity to give back.
Carla Post • carla4community@gmail.com
Our family moved to McLean in 2008 and immediately felt welcomed by the wonderful community. Throughout the years, we have benefited from so many MCC programs that I want to give back by joining the board. As a Director of Conference Services, I have 25 years’ experience planning and directing events, managing technology and budgets and leading teams supporting conference and facilities spaces. I’m also the Sustainability Project Manager for a major corporation and hope to work with MCC staff to promote sustainable practices and incorporate environmental education into the curriculum. Thank you for this opportunity to serve our community.
Barbara Protacio • electbarb@gmail.com
I’m Barbara Protacio, and as a teacher, coach and mother of two, I have served country, community and family. When I graduated from Yale, I wanted to give back to the country that embraced me when I was adopted as a baby from Guatemala. I began my life of service as a Navy captain, a PTA president at two schools, and I am currently teaching first grade in Vienna. Now, I wish to serve my neighbors on the McLean Community Center Governing Board to provide programs and activities that create an inviting McLean community that embraces people of all backgrounds. 4

Youth Candidates TWO POSITIONS OPEN LANGLEY HIGH SCHOOL BOUNDARY AREA
Alizé Ashraf • alize.ashraf@gmail.com
I moved to McLean four years ago in eighth grade. Since then, McLean has had so much to offer me, from recreational soccer to Dranesville district meetings at MCC. Along the way, I’ve made some great friends at Langley High School and have become a part of the community through the school orchestra, Saxon Stage, clubs and honor societies. I’ve learned to handle responsibility and manage my time by helping Abrar Omeish with her 2019 school board campaign. I’m excited about getting more youth involved with the MCC. McLean has given me so much and I want to give back.
Anna Krause-Steinrauf • annakrause222@gmail.com
I have loved growing up in McLean. I am a Junior at Langley High School and value being a part of my school’s and McLean’s community. I am running as a candidate because I am passionate about making the McLean Community Center a place for everyone, especially youth. Through programs at the McLean Community Center, I have learned valuable skills and made friends. I would like to advocate for intergenerational programs to bring people together since many do not have extended family in the area. I have experience in planning and participating in meetings through Langley’s Service Learning Club.
Megan Markwart • ltmarkwart@gmail.com
A lifelong McLean resident and Junior at Langley, I’ve attended MCC programs since I was born, tagging along with my siblings to Music Together class. Redeemer Lutheran and my family taught me the importance of giving back and sports taught me the value of teamwork. Having played field hockey, soccer and track at Langley, elected Class of 2020 SGA representative annually and serving on the MCC Board this past year has prepared me to actively participate on next year’s Board. I support programming of interest to young adults such as the MCC-Alden-TEDxTysons event. Thank you for your vote.
MCLEAN HIGH SCHOOL BOUNDARY AREA
Sabrina Benmira • sabrinake703@gmail.com
McLean has been my home for as long as I can remember. I am committed to this community and the people that live here. My international background has allowed me to appreciate the diversity of McLean and connect with my peers. At McLean High School, I have fallen in love with field hockey and devoted my time to raising money for the American Cancer Society through Relay for Life. If elected as a board member, I will provide crucial insight into the lives of the youth and strive to make changes that are in the best interest of everyone.
Xavier Jimenez • xavierjimenez523@gmail.com
Hi! I’m Xavier, a Junior from McLean. I’m running for the Board because I care about my town and the people in it. It’s my belief that making life more enjoyable, for even one person, makes the community stronger as a whole. When I was younger, I used to volunteer to usher the plays put on at the Alden Theatre. I’ve volunteered for the State Senate race in Virginia’s 35th district and interned on a local Fairfax election for Chairman of the Board. Due to my passion for the wellbeing of citizens, I believe I’d make a great Board member.
Lindsea Strelser • lcstrelser@gmail.com
My name is Lindsea Strelser and I’m a junior at McLean High School. I’m the right fit for our MCC Governing Board because I will always keep the interest of McLean’s residents in mind when making decisions regarding what programs are available for you! As an ambassador for the Fairfax Office for Women, I have hands-on experience with planning fun, rewarding events and getting the most out of a budget! As a teenager myself, I’m invested in making the MCC as exciting and welcoming to the youth as possible. Please vote for me as your new Youth Governing Board member.

McLean Community Center Names Laurelie Wallace Its 2018 Outstanding Volunteer The McLean Community Center (MCC) has awarded its top honor for volunteers, the H. Gordon Randall Outstanding Volunteer Service Award for 2018, to former MCC Governing Board Chair Laurelie Wallace. The award was presented at the Center’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on Sunday, March 24.
For more information, call the Center at 703-790-0123, TTY: 711 or visit: www.mcleancenter.org.
Wallace served two terms on the MCC Governing Board, where she provided leadership and support to Center programs and services. During the two years she served as chair (2016-2018), the center began the renovation project that required staff to vacate the facility and relocate programs in the community for 22 months. Wallace grew up attending programs and events at MCC and The Alden. She was one of the first members of The Old Firehouse. In her remarks, she said, “To be able to give back to a community that gave me so much as a kid and a teen in a place that has always been my home—nothing compares to it.

I want you to see the differences here and what we have to look forward to.” Sachs extended his thanks to the MCC staff, to the Center’s present and former Governing Board members, Robert Alden, who The Alden Theatre is named after and whose community organizing efforts in the 1960s resulted in the establishment of the center, and Mary Anne Hampton, one of MCC’s first Delegate Mark Keam, MCC Governing Board Members Kat Kehoe, Raj Mehra and Alicia Plerhoples, Delegate Kathleen Murphy, MCC Board employees when it opened in 1975. 2019 SUMMER PROGRAM GUIDE
An MCC Staffer in the Spotlight Joe McGovern, Facilities Manager
Having played a major role in the Center’s recent renovation, McLean Community Center’s Facilities Manager Joe McGovern has learned a lot in the last two years. “Renovating a building like ours was a major undertaking that entailed literally millions of details and every one of them was important,” he said. As he, the MCC Governing Board, staff and MCC Executive Director George Sachs worked through those details, McGovern also had the responsibility of overseeing the care of the three temporary locations Center staff worked out of for 22 months. “You could say, my plate stayed pretty full,” he said. A native of Northern Virginia, McGovern attended Potomac Senior High School. After graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in Sports Management, McGovern began his career as an intern with the University of Michigan’s football and hockey teams. He left Michigan in 1996, when he was given the golden opportunity of working at the Summer Olympics, which were being held in Atlanta, Ga., that year. “It was an amazing experience that gave me a new appreciation for what goes into organizing and hosting large scale events.” After the job was over, he moved back to Virginia and was hired at MCC, where he has worked for the last 21 years. As the facility manager, he oversees the facility’s physical plant and coordinates the scheduling of the activities held at the Center. He supervises the rentals booking manager and the six recreation aides that staff the building on evenings and weekends. “I like working here because we get to provide spaces and services to people in the surrounding communities,” he said. “Just about every day, I have an opportunity to see happy people enjoying classes or meetings or celebrating milestone events like birthday parties and weddings.” In his free time, he enjoys getting together with his brother, sister and parents, who still live nearby. “I love attending live music concerts and watching the Hokies play football and basketball from my couch, with my dog at my side.” You can contact Joe at 703-744-9341 or joseph.mcgovern@fairfaxcounty.gov. 8

NEW! Dog Training Classes, p. 19
Instructor Spotlight Celia Kibler, President/Co-founder of Funfit® Family Fitness www.funfit.com
Celia Kibler has offered the Funfit® Tots program at MCC for more than 20 years. Funfit® is a full-of-fun fitness class for children with music, active games and play that keeps toddlers engaged. It enhances cognitive and physical developmental skills that toddlers need to grow healthy and strong. Kibler said her passion has always been children and their need for happy, fun and empowering childhoods. After enduring a childhood physical ailment, she said, “I decided my journey would be one of teaching and helping kids.” She earned a B.S. degree in Human Ecology and Education from the University of Maryland and holds certifications in nutrition, personal training and yoga instruction. In 1987, when she and her sister, Maddi Cheers, decided to start Funfit®, their goal was to create a program where all children could participate regardless of their gender, skill level or abilities, have fun and gain a love for physical fitness. Partnering with the expertise of a pediatric cardiologist, an orthopedic surgeon, a childhood education specialist and a speech pathologist, they created the program and it has now been offered all around the metro area for more than 30 years. A mother of five and grandmother of seven, Kibler says her family “fills my life with daily joy and happiness.” Not surprisingly then, she has recently become a Parenting/Family Empowerment Coach and offers coaching to help parent/caregiver/child relationships. She also continues to teach Funfit® classes. “Honestly, there is nothing better than walking into a Funfit class and having a group of toddlers just run up to you and smother you with hugs and kisses,” she said. “There is no more rewarding job out there.” REGISTER ONLINE | www.mcleancenter.org

MUSIC
CLASSES FOR PARENTS/GUARDIAN & CHILDREN
Music Together®
Music Together®, an internationally-recognized music and movement program, engages early childhood music development for infant, toddler and preschool children and their parents and other primary caregivers through mixed-aged classes. It pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally-appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement and, it’s fun! The Music Together approach develops every child’s birthright of basic music competence by encouraging the actual experiencing of music through playful activities rather than the learning of concepts or information about music. Please note: Instructors may be subject to change without notification. It is not the responsibility of McLean Community Center and its instructors to make up, prorate or reimburse any missed classes due to the enrollee’s personal absences and/or schedule conflicts. McLEAN TRAVELER Historic Garden Week – Lynchburg Tuesday, April 30
Garden Week is possibly the most beautiful time of the year in Virginia. Each spring, thousands of visitors are invited to visit over 250 gardens, homes and historic properties during “America’s Largest Open House.” The Garden Club members of Virginia create hundreds of arrangements that are showcased in the private homes and the unforgettable gardens dazzle those who visit. The proceeds from the tours help the restoration and preservation of Virginia’s historic public gardens and landscapes. This year, the tour goes to scenic Lynchburg and the surrounding counties. Visitors can stroll through the gardens and orchards of three, small picturesque farms and explore an 1832 home relocated and restored to its original glory. Another interesting property features a cabin with a wide, welcoming porch that was created for a couple who wanted to vacation while just being at home. Also of interest is a home that has been renovated and decorated by the famed designer who lives there. Included in the tour is a box lunch, hand painted by a local artist. Lunch choices are a chicken salad or a pimento cheese sandwich. Please indicate your choice on the check when registering. Garden Week in Virginia is something not to be missed! What could be better than wandering through luscious gardens and touring beautiful homes on a lovely April day? Activity No. 7007.319 $157/$152 MCC district residents, which includes deluxe motor coach transportation, admission to houses and gardens, a box lunch, morning snack and driver’s tip.
