Taking Our “Show” on the Road A Letter from Our Executive Director George Sachs As Executive Director of the McLean Community Center, it’s my honor to greet you on behalf of the Governing Board and staff and to keep you abreast of what’s happening at the Center. This new platform will assist me in doing just that. As many of you know, the Center’s Ingleside Avenue facility is currently under renovation. This makes for exciting times as we work to continue offering Dranesville district residents our programs and services at other convenient locations. In essence, we have “taken our show on the road” and nowhere is this more evident than in the many offerings we have planned for the upcoming winter and spring sessions.

Who We Are, What We Do

The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District 1A-Dranesville). Center facilities include the 383seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio, a multipurpose classroom and catering kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings with a nominal charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available. The Center also operates the award-winning Old Firehouse Teen Center, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. in downtown McLean.

The Center’s flagship day trips and tours program, The McLean Traveler, is offering trips to the Vermeer exhibition at the National Gallery, the Philadelphia Flower Show and to Monticello and Highland. In the true spirit of continuing to offer quality performing arts experiences The Alden staff has designed a unique new program to allow our performing arts-loving residents to see some of the hottest offerings in the area and get an exclusive, insider’s view of these local productions by the people in the know. Instead of dinner and a movie, it’s dinner, a live performance and access, access, access. What about opportunities for our children and teens, you ask? In the coming months, the staff of the Old Firehouse journeys to an ever-expanding list of local destinations for the Friday Night, Teacher Workday and Spring Break trips they oversee. Parents, we know you depend on these entertaining options that can help you cope when school is closed for days or weeks. As we move into a new year, I look forward to seeing and serving you in 2018. Here’s to a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

CENTER NEWS McLean, It’s Our Time to Shine!

Renovation Moves Ahead on All Fronts

As we officially enter the winter season, work continues at a steady pace on the McLean Community Center’s Ingleside Avenue facility. The good news? The renovation project remains on time and within budget! The beautiful weather we experienced this summer allowed contractor Sorensen Gross Construction Services to perform extensive work on the building’s exterior, clearing the landscape and installing elements of the new, more efficient storm water management system. A County arborist continues to monitor the health of the trees and shrubs on the property and will arrange for any needed treatments, prunings or removals.

Demolition of the interior also advanced further with the exterior lobby wall being opened to what will be the new enclosed courtyard. A Geopier® ground improvement system has been mobilized to the courtyard area and is working to help establish the foundation for the additional meeting rooms. The first step in this process was having Virginia Dominion Power relocate the Center’s large, green transformer to its new home at the rear of the Community Hall. Ultimately, the current transformer will be replaced by a newer version that will support the newly expanded center. An evaluation of the new Center’s information technology infrastructure needs also has begun. A center-wide public address system, security cameras and access keypads will all play a role in the planning. Is It Your Turn to Serve?

Run for A Seat on MCC’s 2018-2019 Governing Board

The McLean Community Center is looking for district residents to serve on its Governing Board. The Board sets policy, approves budgets and provides general oversight for Center programs and facilities. Board members have a unique opportunity to improve the quality of life for district residents. Openings: Three adult board seats and two youth board seats. Term of Office: Three years for adults and one year for youths. Eligibility: All candidates must be residents of the Center’s tax district (Small District 1A-Dranesville District). One youth candidate from the area served by McLean High School will be elected and one youth candidate from the area served by Langley High School will be elected. Youth candidates need not attend these schools, but must run for the seat representing the area where they live. Petitions: Each candidate must obtain ten (10) signatures of endorsement from district residents and submit information about his or her candidacy for publication. For a youth candidate, the ten (10) required signatures must also be from youths living in her or his high school area. Petition forms will be available at MCC starting on Monday, Jan. 22. Deadline: Petitions must be filed at MCC no later than 5 p.m., on Friday, March 16. Election: Residents of the Center’s tax district may vote for Board members on McLean Day, Saturday, May 19, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lewinsville Park, or by absentee ballot from Monday, April 9, through Wednesday, May 16. After a public hearing on Wednesday, Sept. 27, the Center’s proposed budget for the next fiscal year, July 1, 2018– June 30, 2019, was approved by the MCC Governing Board at its meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 25. The tax rate to support the Center was maintained at 2.3 cents per $100 of assessed real estate value. The County Board of Supervisors will consider the Center’s budget for final approval in April. We’d Like to Hear from You

The McLean Community Center Governing Board is holding a Public Hearing on MCC Programs at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, at the Center. The Governing Board’s regularly scheduled monthly meeting will follow the public hearing. Residents of Small District 1A-Dranesville, the Center’s tax district, are encouraged to attend the hearing to voice their opinions on current offerings at the Center and to make suggestions for future programs. The hearing is the first step in planning for the FY 2020 budget cycle, which begins July 1, 2019. The Center is home to the Robert Ames Alden Theatre and includes the Old Firehouse Teen Center. Residents who would like to have their names placed on the speakers’ list for the hearing may call the Center at 703-790-0123, TTY: 711. Center News An MCC Staffer in the Spotlight Katie Mara Fedora, Registrar

When you come to MCC’s Registration Office to sign up for a class or activity, the smiling face most likely to greet you will be that of Registrar Katie Fedora. Katie replaced Barbara Smoot in this high-profile position in September 2016, so you may think she is a relatively new employee. You would be wrong. “My MCC career began at the age of 16!” says Fedora. I started out as a Counselor in Training at Camp McLean and worked my way up to Assistant Director. In addition to my summer positions, I also worked in the Youth Activities department for about eight years.” In 2011, she became a Recreation Aide, working at the Center’s front desk in the evenings. “During my years at MCC, I have worked in almost all the departments,” she adds. Fedora grew up in McLean and attended McLean High School, where she was a competitive cheerleader. She also cheered while enrolled as a student at Bridgewater College. When she returned to the area, she coached the JV and Varsity cheerleading team at McLean High

School with her best friend, Sarah Krawchuk. In addition to her job, Katie is busy raising her two children, 16-year-old daughter, Madison, and 14-year-old son, Griffin. A third “child,” this one with four furry paws, named Moxie, also takes up some of her time. In her current position, her biggest responsibility is to register customers for MCC-sponsored classes and activities, as well as entering, updating and maintaining the information in the Center’s online registration system, Active.net. If a class must be canceled, she is the person responsible for notifying patrons. “Ultimately, I am the one who will call with the bad news.” Fedora says, “The best part of my job is getting to know our customers every day as they come and go. I love the interaction I have with the public, and the kids that come in for our children’s classes are the best! I enjoy the fact that I never know what the day will hold. Our youngest and most precious patrons need no introduction to “Ms. Patti,” as Patti Papworth has been teaching Music Together at MCC since 2003. A native of Salem, Ore., Papworth is one of seven children. She has been performing since she was eight years old and holds a B.A. degree in Vocal Performance from Utah State University. Says Papworth, “I think the most powerful thing about teaching is seeing how kids learn and grow. I have always had music in my life and I also have a deep love for children, so when I came across this program, I knew it was a perfect fit for me. It’s amazing anytime I run into parents who give an update on their children—that they are now playing instruments or are involved in music programs—those are happy moments.” Her involvement in music is not limited to teaching at MCC. She has a private piano studio and directs a regional, 60-member church choir. In her free time, she enjoys being outside, playing piano, cooking and helping people with interior design and staging. Papworth says MCC is a wonderful gathering place that fosters friendships and understanding. “I love how it brings all cultures and lifestyles together. I have classes where every child or adult is from a different area of the world. It adds so much to our experience to be able to enjoy and learn from each other.”

Your child will learn how investors make (and lose) money in the stock market and how they can start investing successfully at a young age! In this hands-on class, students use a cool, stock-trading simulation tool with real-time market data to select a $10,000 stock portfolio and analyze its performance over time, “learning by doing.” Smart investing will help them meet long-term financial goals. Little dancers love this enchanting adventure in dance. Children develop rhythm, grace, poise, coordination and musicality through pre-primary classical ballet, beginning tap skills, tap routines and improvisations with magical props and adorable costumes. Our dance class enriches your child in five areas of development: physical, creative, social, cognitive and emotional. Instructor: Joy of Dance Staff.

Classes for Children Tutus for 2s™ (MCC-LSC)

Tiny ballerinas will be introduced to French ballet vocabulary, ballet warm-ups, creative movement, games and large motor skill development through our fun Tutus ballet syllabus. Your ballerina will explore the excitement of ballet using costume accessories, props, ballet stories and puppets. The session will conclude with a Parent Watch Day. The Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Canal (MCC)

The Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Canal is 184.5 miles, running from Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, Md. It was built between 1828 and 1850 and operated between 1831 and 1924. It has 74 locks, 11 aqueducts to cross major streams, more than 240 culverts to cross smaller streams and, the 3,118-foot-long Paw Paw Tunnel. The principal cargo was coal from the Allegheny Mountains. The Canal Towpath served as one of the routes of the “Underground Railroad.” Now that you know some of the facts about the C&O Canal, come to this presentation and learn much more about it, its history, its beauty and its uses. This is a unique opportunity to see and experience the works of Johannes Vermeer and his contemporaries from 1650 to 1675. This special exhibit combines 65 works of art by Vermeer and his fellow painters of the Dutch Golden Age.

Think spring and come along with us to visit the 2018 Philadelphia Flower Show, where scents, sounds and extraordinary floral displays will delight our senses. The theme this year is “Wonders of Water,” which will be so much more than just waterfalls and fountains.

This year, the design teams will stretch the imagination and bring creativity to a whole new level by incorporating water into more than 10 acres of landscapes and fanciful aquatic blooms. Lunch will be on your own. You can sample from the plentiful food vendors at the Convention Center or those located across the street at the historic Reading Terminal Market where the vast selections range from the iconic Philly Cheese Steaks to homebaked Amish goodies.

As in years past, garden shoppers will be thrilled with the over 180 vendors offering everything from garden furniture to unique plants and flowers. Horticulture, artistic and culinary lectures and demonstrations by world-class experts are all free to show visitors. Presidents Day in April Albemarle County, Virginia Tuesday, April 17

Once, there were two famous men who were good friends, both presidents of the United States, who were born in Albemarle County, Virginia, and lived just a short distance from one other. James Monroe, our fifth president, lived at his home named Highland for 25 years. It was Thomas Jefferson who encouraged Monroe to purchase Highland, which was adjacent to Jefferson’s home, Monticello. Unfortunately, due to increasing debt, Monroe was forced to sell his beloved estate in 1825. Fittingly, the home is now owned and operated by Monroe’s alma mater, the College of William and Mary.

Our guided tour consists of the house and any additions that Monroe made. Just recently archaeologists discovered the foundation of a much larger house now presumed to be Monroe’s home.

Lunch will be in the Old Mill Room of the Boar’s Head Inn, which is a premiere resort just outside of Charlottesville. The restaurant was built from timbers of an old abandoned gristmill dating back to 1834 and our buffet lunch offerings will be of delicious regional cuisine.

Monticello is our last stop of the day because there is so much to explore. Jefferson began creating and building Monticello at the young age of 26 and modeled it after the designs of the Italian Renaissance architect, Andrea Palladio, who Jefferson greatly admired. For Jefferson, Monticello was an ongoing project. Started in 1772, this grand estate started out as a plantation house but after Jefferson’s trips to Europe as Secretary of State, many of the classical buildings of Italy and France influenced his designs. The outbuildings, slave quarters and gardens may also be visited. This is a day that takes a rare glimpse into the lives of two presidents who helped shape our great nation. The MPA exhibition “Nature as Prototype” aims to examine the role of nature and biology as a source of inspiration for art and design. The artists included in this exhibition—Adam Nelson, Grethe Wittrock and Yoko K.— will collaborate to create an Adam Nelson, Glacial, thermoform plastic, printed imagery, immersive environment that steel, light. explores the changing nature of our relationship to the natural world. Continuing the conversation about how we choose to co-exist in what is described today as the Anthropocene, the exhibition will examine how art and design are fundamentally linked to scientific, biological, mathematical, philosophical, and social investigations.

This curated exhibition will feature 4 – 6 artists whose work is influenced by science. Both the methods of discovery and images and concepts related to fields such as chemistry, microbiology, neuroscience, physics and genetics are referenced. Commonalities that exist between science and art are embraced as both process and outcome in the works included in this exhibition.

“Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened” tells the story of “Merrily We Roll Along,” the Stephen Sondheim/Hal Prince musical that opened to enormous fanfare and closed after just 16 performances. Directed by one of the musical’s original cast members, it features interviews with the creators and cast of the now-classic show as well as rare and never before seen footage from the rehearsal process. “Sing Faster: The Stagehands’ Ring Cycle” Saturday, March 24, 2 p.m. Free Admission Wagner’s Ring Cycle is the Mount Everest of the opera world… just ask the stagehands! Intro to Djembe Drumming and Drum Circle (OFC) Back by popular demand. Join The Alden and master artist Kofi Dennis for an introductory to djembe drumming skills and improvisation. Included in this class is a chance to put your new skills to the test playing as a group in a community drum circle. This class is designed for children age eight and older and we recommended that families participate together. Please see page 22, for more information.

Classes for Adults Dance Appreciation: History of Flamenco with Estela Vélez de Paredez Learn about the history of flamenco music and dance in this five-session, lecture/ discussion led by Estela Vélez de Paredez, artistic director of Furia Flamenca. This passionate, rhythmic style of dance and music has a fascinating history that originated in southern Spain, and Estela will enlighten participants and engage the group in passionate, informal dialogues.

Classes for Teens (the) Unruly Improv Be a part of The Alden’s newest Improv Team! Now open to 8th graders! (the) Unruly Improv is a club for busy students to sharpen their improv skills for enhanced theatre training, better college interviews, or to become a member of (the) Unruly Company in the future! Camp McLean 2018 Our dynamic Camp McLean program provides a wide array of experiences and fun for your children. Children ages 3 to 10 can enjoy trips and performances; explore the world of fitness, fun and much, much more! During each twoweek session, our staff of highly-trained counselors and specialists will lead campers on some unforgettable adventures and provide enrichment opportunities from crafts to music to just plain summer fun!
