McLEAN COMMUNITY CENTER

Who We Are, What We Do The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District One A-Dranesville). Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio and a classroom/commercial kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings without charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available in the lobby. The Center also operates the award-winning Old Firehouse Teen Center, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. in downtown McLean.

My husband and I have owned our home, worked, paid taxes and enjoyed life in McLean since 1994. I’m vice president of a small consulting firm. I’ve been serving as chief or assistant chief election officer in McLean for many years. If elected to the Board, I hope to bring fresh ideas for the continued improvement in MCC’s services to the McLean community. E-mail: shahnazmaguire@aol.com

Jill Roth There’s nothing more important to me than my family. McLean offers amazing opportunities for my two sons, ages 3 and 8 months, and I’d like to see these opportunities grow. As a member of the MCC Board, I can have a direct impact on programs, camps and events in our community. I’d offer a different insight and fresh feel to the board. As a small business owner, I know what it takes to have a vision and make it reality. I’ll communicate with residents to hear the concerns and desires of the center in order to deliver results that matter. I also want to promote environmentally friendly practices to ensure that the town I love remains a sustainable, diverse and vibrant community for years to come. Email: lianaformccboard@outlook.com

Quentin Levin I run not merely to take office, but to make MCC a better organization. Serving at MCC for the past year, I’ve developed an understanding — community makes us who we are. Sam Gollob I am so fortunate to have lived in McLean all my life and it is very important to me to give back. I have been the president of my McLean High School class of 2018 for the last two years. I try to be a leader and role model on my club; high school and summer swim teams. Also, I volunteer coach for a Special Olympics swim team. As your leader, I hope to act as a voice for the youth of McLean to make our community an even better place. Email: samtg2018@gmail.com

Riya Master My name is Riya Master and I am a sophomore at McLean HS. I am interested in being a doctor, and I thoroughly enjoy math. I serve on the Teen Advisory Board for the public libraries. Last summer, I worked as a volunteer at Children’s National, providing great job experience. Additionally, my resume includes the JV field hockey and soccer teams, debate, Model United Nations and DECA. Multiple national/local competition experiences have given me a strong insight on policy and working effectively in a committee or team. I believe I can make a difference and benefit the governing board. Email: riyamaster@gmail.com

Mariana Patterson I enjoy taking other people’s ideas and thoughts into account when making decisions, especially if I’m working together with them to achieve a common goal. Being bilingual in both English and Spanish aids me in this trait. My organizational skills are another strong characteristic of mine as I consider them to be both my greatest weakness and strength because I often make lists in order to structure a plan that I want to obtain, no matter the size. However, I feel uneasy if I proceed to do a task without a formulated strategy. Email: patterson.mariana@gmail.com

For ages 4+. ArtsPower’s newest musical portrays the colorful story of Marge and Lola, two barnyard chickens on a mission to win the barnyard talent contest’s first prize of two tickets to see the great Elvis Poultry in concert! But first, they must present a performance that will score higher than a flock of very talented ducks who seem to have the contest locked up. Can Marge and Lola face their challengers, against all odds, and win the talent contest?

“The Magic of Bill Blagg Live!” comes to The Alden for one show only! Critics and audiences alike rave about his incredible high-energy, grand-scale magic and illusion that will have you rubbing your eyes in disbelief. Called “simply amazing” by The Chicago Tribune, Blagg’s show is packed with new mind-blowing illusions and his trademark off-the-cuff personality that make this show a great family event! Audience volunteers will levitate in mid-air, others w\ill vanish in the blink of an eye and there is so much more. This is one show you can’t afford to miss! “Unbelievable!” – USA Today

This multimedia exploration, on one level, is the personal story of how Jad invented a new aesthetic. On another, it is a clinic in the art of storytelling. On a third and more profound level, it is the result of a three-year investigation into the science, philosophy and art of uncertainty, which all began with the two words that are the title of this talk. “Gut Churn.” WAMU is a proud sponsor of this event.

Art Fusion A one-week mix-up of all sorts of mediums and media for teens who want to meet up and try out different forms of art that they can apply to their everyday creative expression. We will explore drawing, photos, video and even how the theatre plays into visual art within The Alden. We will meet in MPA’s Emerson Gallery, and explore the McLean Community Center, the Dolley Madison Library, the current shows installed at MPA and more for our inspiration. 12-16 years 5 days @ 3 hrs, $195/$180 MCC district residents.

A new classical art program created by professional artist Kerry Vosler for young art students. In an atelier environment held in the beautiful, light-filled Emerson Gallery, students will study and draw from life with a master instructor. As students master core concepts and show understanding through their drawings, they will be given more complicated concepts to master. Students will draw a variety of pictures in charcoal throughout the week including copy work from the late 19th century, Bargue-Gérôme Drawing Course, culminating in a session with a live model on Friday afternoon. Students will have at least two portfolio drawings by the end of the week, and parents and families are encouraged to attend the closing certificate ceremony on Friday at 4:15 p.m. Students should bring a bag lunch and drink each day. Visit www.mpaart.org for more information about the daily schedule and MPA’s new partnership with the Vosler Young Artists’ Studio. 13-18 years 5 days @ 7 hrs, $390/$370 MCC district residents. Watercolor: Evening Alfresco

Drawing into Painting

Work directly from the landscape and surrounding nature in this outdoor watercolor class. We will explore how the later afternoon light transforms our subjects, and we will hone in on different inspirations we find in the summer evening setting. For a portion of each class, when it gets dark, we will bring our work into the studio and continue to work and critique inside. This class is led by MPA exhibiting artist Carol Barsha, who has much experience teaching watercolor outdoors, and employs this medium and setting in her own work.

For beginning and intermediate students. Hit the refresh button this summer and get your skills and confidence up! You will bring your drawing skills up to speed with measuring, composition, shading and gesture through exercises to help you loosen up as well as hone in your technical and observational skills. Students will select either acrylic or oil, and we will explore mixing, different applications, and using color in the composition as we build our paintings. The materials list will include choices for basic acrylic or oil. Instructor: Naomi Chung.

Line, Color, Pattern, Motif: From Coloring Book to Art Open to artists of all levels. Inspired by the coloring book craze, this class is designed to lead artists through an exploration of line as a guiding force in art. Referencing sources as diverse as textile designs, old master drawings, 17th Century emblem books and coloring books, we will go from simple to complex designs using colored pencils. Beginning students with no drawing experience can begin making designs using abstract patterning and transfer techniques; intermediate and advanced students can develop complex pictures through composite methods. Along the way, we’ll touch upon color theory, tonality, line quality and pencil techniques. Instructor: Aletha Kuschan.
