2018 FALL 2019 WINTER-SPRING PROGRAM GUIDE PROGRAM GUIDE

Who We Are, What We Do The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District 1A-Dranesville). Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio, a multipurpose classroom and catering kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings with a nominal charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available. The Center also operates the award-winning Old Firehouse Teen Center, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. in downtown McLean.

There’s No Place Like Home! I want to start this message with a huge “thank you” to a talented professional staff and many dedicated volunteers who made it possible for us to continue our high-quality programs uninterrupted through months of complex satellite operations involving multiple locations and temporary office spaces from Spring 2017 through December 2018. While the building has been undergoing extensive renovation during the last 18 months, our diligent staff has moved forward with effective new ways of working together. We can finally celebrate with great pride our beautiful renovation. There is an exciting new look to McLean’s very own community center! I am pleased to announce we will be hosting a Community Open House and we are inviting you, our residents, to come and see your newly improved community center. Mark your calendars for Saturday Jan. 5, 2019, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come visit and check out the lovely facility spaces designed for meetings, classes and events. Some special thanks also to everyone who stuck with us through this process, and to those who may have found the McLean Community Center for the first time, we invite you to join us back home at 1234 Ingleside Ave.

George Sachs Executive Director I was honored to receive the Chairman’s Award-Outstanding Member at the McLean Chamber of Commerce’s Suits and Sneakers event on Oct. 2. Chamber 1st Vice Chairman Hailey Render and Chamber President Paul Kohlenberger presented the award.

2019 WINTER-SPRING PROGRAM GUIDE

Left: A portrait of Ashok by Mihira Karra Right: Ashok in his office

An MCC Staffer in the Spotlight

Ashok Karra, Comptroller “Show me the money,” that memorable quote from the movie “Jerry McGuire,” is often quoted by MCC Comptroller Ashok Karra. As the person charged with supervising the accounting and financial reporting functions at MCC, he is daily asking staff to do just that. A native of Madras (Chennai), India, Karra joined the MCC staff in 2012, after having worked 26 years in the hotel industry. He holds a master’s degree from Purdue University in Restaurant Hotel Industry Management and also worked for a chartered accountant auditing firm and a tea export company, prior to coming to this country. At MCC, he provides management and oversight of the operating funds of the center. He also provides Dranesville Small District 1A residents, who pay a real estate surcharge that funds the center, information on the use of their taxes through financial stewardship. He recently completed work on the Center’s FY 2020 Proposed Budget. Another part of his job entails working with the center’s program staff to help them in their efforts to offer public events and activities in the most efficient and fiscally responsible manner possible. He says the job can be challenging, as he is charged with ensuring that numerous Fairfax County Government financial policies and procedures are being adhered to in day-to-day transactions. “We want to make sure we are conducting business properly,” he said. In his spare time, Ashok loves to spend time outdoors golfing, playing tennis and swimming. He also serves as a “foreman” for his wife Mihira, an artist who shows and sells her fabric portraits at art shows in the region. He has been delighted by a recent discovery. “Since growing my beard, I notice that people have started calling me “sir,” he said. “This was something totally unexpected and amuses me no end.” 6

2019 WINTER-SPRING PROGRAM GUIDE

CLASSES Instructor Spotlight

Heidi Himmelberg, Body/Moves Fitness, LLC Students who sign up for MCC’s Yoga Sculpt & Strength or Yoga + Pilates classes are often seeking ways to improve their health and fitness. Years ago, while dealing with serious health issues, class instructor Heidi Himmelberg was seeking the same for herself, and as a result, discovered a new focus and career. “For people who don’t know me well, it might not be apparent what it took to get me here. I have come from a place of severe physical limitations, which required serious treatments over many years,” said Himmelberg. While dealing with her illness, she discovered mind/body protocols and used them to improve her well-being and quality of life. “To me, this reflects the profound power of self-care through Pilates and Yoga and gives extra meaning to my work.” In addition to holding a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Mary Washington and a master’s degree in Communication from George Mason University, Himmelberg is a Yoga Education Institute Certified Instructor, with more than 300 hours of training in Pranashama Vinyasa Yoga and Core Strength Vinyasa. She’s also completed coursework in Anatomy, Meditation and Myofascial Self Care. An animal enthusiast, she and her husband are the proud parents of a Chow Chow named Teddy Bear and they’ve “adopted” two orangutans. For more than two years, Himmelberg has served as the Lead Instructor for BodyMoves Fitness at MCC. “We have received tremendous positive support from students, who take time to write glowing evaluations, and it really makes our instructors feel great knowing we are truly helping students feel better in their bodies,” she said. 8

Music Together速 Music Together速, an internationally-recognized music and movement program, engages early childhood music development for infant, toddler and preschool children and their parents and other primary caregivers through mixed-aged classes. It pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally-appropriate, early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement, and it's fun! The Music Together approach develops every child's birthright of basic music competence by encouraging the actual experiencing of music through playful activities rather than the learning of concepts or information about music.

Students do not need previous computer programming experience. Today most children use computers and manipulate media, but few of them know how to create the media or software they are using. This class will teach students how to create and develop computer programs (games, stories, etc.) instead of just playing with them. Students will learn computer programming concepts in a fun and interactive way. They will share their own interactive stories, animations, games, music and art. They will have an opportunity to think creatively, communicate clearly, use technology fluently and collaborate effectively. They also will create their own computer programs to implement computer games and combine multiple topics (Science, Engineering, Teamwork). Instructor: Stemtree Staff.

WINTER-SPRING CLASSES • SENIOR MOMENTS ADULT LEARNING/SOCCER Financial Planning: Retirement Years

Class Information

The time has finally come to retire. But now what? We are all told we should save for retirement, but no one ever talks to us about what to do once we get there. For example, how much money is safe to take from your accounts without the risk of running out of money? How will withdrawals affect your taxes? How much risk should you be taking in your portfolio given your age and need for income? Will your spouse be ok when you are no longer alive? Which accounts should you take money from first in retirement? How do you know which investments you should sell when you want to take income? Does it matter? How does Social Security factor into your IRA withdrawal strategy? The answer to these questions, and many more, will be addressed in this informative seminar. In these classes, students will use a limited palette and a systematic approach to paint a combination of portraits and full-length figures. They will learn how to balance proportion, value, color and edge as these aspects are what give power and presence to a work. Watercolor is a medium that allows only a few corrections, so the basis of watercolor must be understood. Students will first learn the fundamental elements of Arabesque patterns and will then learn to develop their own designs by repetition and symmetry as in traditional art. The Art of Illuminated Letters (MPACB) Illuminated letters are the initials that are purely decorative, and often work with text to mark important passages or to enhance or comment on its meaning. In this class, you will learn the art of stylized letters that can be used on journal pages, cards, envelopes, invitations, recipe cards—or anything you can think of—to make them personalized and special. Students will learn to design and paint their own Medieval initials with vines, flourishes and many other elements of decoration.

This class is for continuing students. Yupo is a plastic paper that provides a challenging and fun surface on which to work with ink and watercolor. It is easier to work on abstractly, but can also be used to paint more realistically. Students will enjoy experimenting with drawing and painting in whichever style they choose, and with either setups, models or their imaginations. Instructor: Marise Riddell.

MPA is happy to announce that we will be expanding our workshop offerings during the winter and spring semesters. New offerings may include: Painting on Fabric, Pattern in Painting, Assemblage, Visual Fitness: Engaging Creativity and Insight, Sculptural Crochet, Encaustic Painting, Relief Printmaking, Mono-printing and Wire Weaving!

*Materials fee: $5, make check payable to Dorothy Spruzen. Fee is due to the instructor on the first day of class.

For more information on dates, please visit our website, www.mpaart.org.

Writing: Fine Tuning

Students at all levels are welcome. Create a narrative series of mixed media painted and collaged works in this four-session workshop. Each art work will begin with forms found in nature. How you define nature is open to each student. We will be using acrylic, patterned papers and various drawing materials. Students will be encouraged to work in “layered” compositions with mixed media materials-finding their own narrative content through color, line, shape, and various textural elements. Contemporary art history will also be a source of inspiration for this class.

Writers of fiction, nonfiction (including memoir) or poetry are all welcome; however, previous writing instruction is strongly recommended. Critiquing the work of others is fine training for critiquing your own work and, of course, having the input of other readers is invaluable. Whatever your genre, others will bring their own experiences and preferences to the table. Each session will deal with the critique of work submitted by three attendees (up to 10 pages each). Work will be emailed by the author to each class member and the instructor at least one week prior to class. There will be brief teaching moments if an issue needs to be addressed and critique guidance will be provided. Marked-up copies will be given to the authors at the end of their reviews.

Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s Tale” Sunday, March 31 • 2 p.m. Live music starts 1:30 p.m. Shakespeare’s magnificent late play is a roller-coaster ride from romance to tragedy to comedy and, finally, to a place of transcendent beauty where few other works of art have ever gone. “This Shakespeare moves… we feel the inexorable sweep of the action, but the poetry has a chance to breathe, too. And how wonderful to hear actors speak Shakespeare naturally. It is poetry come alive." – The Boston Globe

It’s story time for Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh, but Pooh won’t hear just any story, he wants to hear a story about himself, because “he’s that sort of bear.” Pooh’s love of honey and his friendship with Piglet take him and the rest of the forest creatures—Owl, Eeyore and Rabbit—on a journey as they try to understand their new neighbors, Kanga and Roo. There is a reason this beloved story has become a classic for all ages—the themes are universal and the characters are silly, yet charming. Youth actors will work with The Alden’s team of theater professionals to bring this story to life with full sets, costumes and technical elements on The Alden’s stage.
