PROGR A M NOTE S LIG HT NING FIELD
Lightning Field takes its title from a work of art by Walter De Maria. That work is a massive expanse of New Mexico desert, claimed and transformed by the artist via an installation of steel rods: planted in the earth and reaching toward the sky, they call down its power literally creating man-made lightning storms. Like them, Lightning Field speaks to the ancient impulse to summon nature’s power, and the magic such acts unleash. A sense of energy runs throughout the work, with the driving onstage percussion enhanced by the sound of thunder (provided by inexpensive hand-held percussion instruments called “thunder tubes”) surrounding the audience.
AQUARIUM
Aquarium is only the third composition for band by the Dutch composer Johann de Meij, whose work for wind ensemble and concert band now rests along the “top shelf ” of compositions for wind band. In this work, six residents of this microcosm of sea life are represented, beginning with the neon tetra and ending with the dance of the guppy. Each of the fish is represented by a distinct melody, rhythmic motif or harmonic cluster. These are all brought together in the final movement.
MARCH, OP. 99
Born on April 23, 1891 in Sontsovka, Ukraine of the former Russian Empire, Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev is considered one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century. He was also an accomplished pianist and conductor. He attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory from 1904 to 1914, winning the Anton Rubinstein prize for best student pianist when he graduated. Like other great composers he mastered a wide range of musical genres, including symphonies, concerti, film music, operas, ballets, and program pieces such as his most famous work, Peter and the Wolf. At the time, his works were considered both ultra-modern and innovative. He traveled widely, spending many years in Paris and Ettal in the Bavarian Alps, and toured the United States five times. He gained wide notoriety and his music was both reviled and triumphed by the musical press of the time. He returned to his homeland permanently in 1936. He died on March 5, 1953 in Moscow.
Prokofiev wrote the March, op. 99 in 1943-44 for a Soviet military band. It received its premiere in the form of a radio broadcast from Moscow on April 30, 1944. While the details of the impetus for its composition are unclear, it is possible that it was written for May Day, an important Soviet holiday. The March made its way to the West in part thanks to Paul Yoder, who arranged it for Western instrumentation shortly after its Russian premiere. It was first heard in the United States on May 31, 1945 with Serge Koussevitzky conducting the Combat Infantry Band. Prokofiev reused substantial section of the March in the last opera he would complete, Story of a Real Man, in 1947-48.
T HEMES FROM “GREEN BUSHES” NOTES BY CARL ROWLES
Green Bushes (Passacaglia on an English Folksong) was composed by Percy Grainger in 1905-1906 and is based on a folksong collected in Lincolnshire, England. Green Bushes (also known as Lost Lady Found or The Three Gipsies) was a popular tune that existed in multiple variations, one of which was set as the final movement of his most substantial work for wind band, Lincolnshire Posy. Grainger rescored Green Bushes in 1921, and it is from this setting that Larry Daehn made this arrangement. The dance-like melody is introduced in the low brass and reed voices and is then passed through the ensemble with fifteen variations of accompaniment. The first half of the work builds intensity through an ever-increasing texture while the end increases in speed to create an exciting conclusion.
REQUIEM NOTES BY DAVID MASLANKA
A Requiem is a Mass for the dead. This relatively brief instrumental piece with the title Requiem is not a Mass, but serves a parallel function – the need to lay to rest old things in order to turn the mind and heart toward the new. I have an abiding interest in why humans go to war. I have recently read much about World War II, and was confronted once again with the awful fact of fifty million needless deaths. Shostakovich thought of every one of his compositions as a tombstone, and wished that he could have written a separate memorial piece for every person who died in war. I do believe that we are in a major transitional time, and that this transition happens first in each of us. My Requiem is both for the unnamed dead of all wars, and for each person making their own inner step, saying goodbye in order to say hello.
WIT H HE ART AND VOICE
With Heart and Voice is based on an old Spanish hymn which has made its way into most church hymnals under the name of “Come, Christians, Join to Sing”. Christian Bateman wrote the words for the hymn in 1843 from which the title of this work is found: “Let all, with heart and voice, before his throne rejoice” (hence, the title, With Heart and Voice.)
OH, HENRY !
Oh, Henry! was commissioned by the OMEA District 14 Honors Band, Cincinnati, Ohio, for the 130th anniversary of Henry Fillmore’s birth. A Cincinnati native, Fillmore is celebrated as a legend in the world of concert marches and is considered a band music icon. A consummate entertainer who drew inspiration from his background as a circus musician and trombonist, Fillmore would frequently alter the performance of his marches, making each rendition new and engaging to audiences and performers alike. Oh, Henry! is an homage to the singular style and personality of Fillmore’s impressive body of work (including his abiding love of the trombone “smear”!) It captures the spirit of the Fillmore Band with nods to some of his most well-known and beloved marches.
