Mehran Anvari Dr. Mehran Anvari is the Founding Director of the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery (CMAS), a Professor for McMaster University’s Department of Surgery, and the Chair of Minimal Access Surgery and Surgical Innovation at McMaster University. Dr. Anvari is currently involved in two major prospective randomized trials, one comparing laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery to medical therapy for long-term control of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), and the second comparing laparoscopic and open colectomy for colon cancer. Both trials are nearing completion. Future planned clinical studies include a multicentre trial of laparoscopic vs. open surgery for rectal cancer and a local study of the use of pain pumps for analgesia in laparoscopic abdominal surgery. Studies into new robotic technologies are currently in development with the Department of Engineering. Dr. Anvari will also be the Chief Scientific Officer for the NEEMO 10 mission, a joint project between the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery, NASA, and the Canadian Space Agency, investigating latency, haptics, and telerobotic surgery, and emergency diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic injuries in extreme environments. Dr. Anvari has been honored many times for his innovation and research, including the ORION Leadership Award in 2010 and NASA’s ISS R&D Innovation Award in 2015.

October 5 @ 8:45 a.m.

Today’s Talk: Even the most exciting research will go nowhere unless someone is willing to take that idea into the marketplace and make it available for everyday use. This is the socalled ‘Valley of Death’, between innovation and commercialization, where many great ideas perish. It is imperative to collaborate and develop alliances between corporations and academic researchers to get innovations through this phase of stagnancy. This presentation illustrates the importance of the relationship between innovation and commercialization, including recognizing the factors critical to successful innovation, as well as identifying roadblocks and how to mitigate them.

Breakout Sessions

Session 1

All ses sio Octob ns e @ 9:4 r 5 5 a.m.

“Innovations in Simulation”

Matthew Sibbald

Simulation-based education is an ideal way for learners to speed up their learning curves away from patient care responsibilities. As most health professions’ training programs increasingly focus on competency, simulation-based learning provides a handful of new opportunities for trainees to acquire competency and have their competency measured. This unique breakout session will focus on the concepts of competency-

based education, and provide a hands-on experience with different simulation modalities. Participants of this session will be introduced to task trainers for learning technical skills, theatre-based simulation for mastering health care scenarios, as well as standardized patients for conversation training. Participants will also engage in small, groupbased discussions as they tour the world-renowned Centre for Simulation-Based Learning (CSBL).

Session 2

“Innovations in Education: The Art of Seeing”

Joyce Zazulak 14

Nicole Knibbs

The Art of Seeing ™ is a visual literacy program developed in partnership between the McMaster University Department of Family Medicine and the McMaster Museum of Art to enhance and support professional growth and self-care. This workshop uses works of art as the basis for learning, enhanced by facilitated

discussion and narrative writing, to develop greater skills in perception, critical thinking, communication, and compassion. Learning to look at visual art is a means to better understand ourselves and others, and to better visualize and imagine possibilities for creative thinking and innovation.

Session 3

“Innovation Training in Surgical Simulation Techniques”

Jen Hoogenes

Marie Fairgrieve

This 30-minute presentation on surgical education through simulation and the advances in the world of surgical technology will provide an overview of simulation techniques that McMaster surgeons use to teach surgical residents, as well as the assessment measures utilized to ensure that residents

are progressing throughout the learning curve. This enthralling presentation is followed by an immersive tour of the skills lab, where you will play and practice on six different simulation centres. Here you will discover just how easy/hard it is to perform surgery laparoscopically.
