Crushed headlights and dented doors are a story of the past for customers of A-1 Body Shop, Davis’ top auto body shop as voted by Davis Enterprise readers. The shop was started by the Cross family in 1967. Brian and Dee Cross ran it until selling it to Brian von Tress in 2020, who owns several other body shops in Northern California. “When we met with the Crosses we felt that A-1 Body Shop met all the same goals as the rest of the Collision Pros family,” von Tress said. “Like the Crosses, Collision Pros believes they are there to serve the community and focus on the best possible repair, but also in a way that makes the process as simple as possible.” Collision Pros added a lot

It has been 3½ years ago since the Malinoff family passed on the local Honda dealership in Davis to the Shottenkirk family. And what a 3 ½ years it has been! According to the readers and customers — Shottenkirk Automotive Group picked up where University Honda left off — between the two winning Best of Yolo 20 years in a row and then again this year! The sense of family means that many of the faces you’ll see in service, in sales, and in the office are faces you saw back in the University Honda days. General Manager Georgian Moldoveanu says, “It’s no secret, you can buy or service a new Honda anywhere but you can’t buy the experience that our veteran

doesn’t just mean one family owns our dealership, it means our employees are a part of
that family, our customers are a part of that family. Our customers expect to see the same employees they saw when they first started doing business with us. That’s the way a family operates.” Shottenkirk Honda’s recipe for success is simple: Adopt a “customer first” culture. Support your local community. Hire and train local employees. Invest in technology for your technicians, stock your dealership with as many new Honda’s you can get (!) and have the type of used inventory that your customers want to drive. Follow this recipe and your customer’s will come back and tell their friends and neighbors AND will earn you right to call yourselves the Best of Yolo County! After 3 ½ years, Shottenkirk

Davis Parent Nursery School has served generations of families in the Davis area dating back to its founding in 1949. Even now some students at the nonprofit, parentparticipation cooperative nursery school are the children and grandchildren of former students. DPNS has two campuses in Davis — one on West Eighth Street and the other on Danbury Street adjacent to Montgomery Elementary School. The programs offered include two-, three- and five-day sessions as well as playgroups, summer camps and after-school extended day. “Our program is play-based and allows children to grow intellectually, socially and

staff to support the day-today activities of the school, which not only enriches the environment for our students, but also connects parents with each other and encourages community support as well as learning opportunities for the parents themselves.” That parent participation means DPNS has an unusually high classroom ratio of adults to students (one to four) and helps keep DPNS tuition low. Moreover, DPNS offers a range of parent education opportunities, both on-site with professional teachers and through a variety of guest speakers and workshops scheduled throughout the school year. The nursery school takes its play-based learning philosophy very seriously and notes that

winning awards, either. Sudwerk won “Best Brewery in the US” at the 2021 Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colo., in October — the most competitive beer competition in the world, “The Super Bowl of Beer.” Its People’s Pilsner and Backyard
Hero American Lager won gold medals. Other awards include No. Brew Pub in North America in 1993 The brewery specializes in craft lagers, which is unique for a craft brewery. However, they make all types of beer and make sure every beer they brew is the highest quality and tastes great. Sudwerk also has the UC Davis Master Brewing program on site which is one of the best brewing programs in the world — it’s brewers are graduates of the program. And the relationship with UCD doesn’t end there; the brewery sends its spent grain after brewing to UCD farms, which feeds it to their animals (its highly nutritious) then Sudwerk serves the meat at its taproom, in burgers and brats (UCD also has one of the top butcher programs in the country).

Many of the diners who voted Wok of Flame its fifth consecutive Best Chinese Food award probably didn’t even notice the change of ownership in 2019. Vivien Zheng and her brother Jay Lin came to Davis looking for a thriving Chinese restaurant to continue successfully rather than one in need of rescue found it in the El Macero shopping center. When asked why Wok of Flame survived the pandemic, manager Luis Vargas credited the TLC of the wait and kitchen staff who know how to be sure that patrons receive exactly what they order from a deep menu with over 50 options. Wok of Flame was hit hard by the pandemic and initially had to lay off some 12
employees, but their steady take-out business has brought back customers and that brought back employees. A January fire in the kitchen only required a half-day shut down and they were back in business. Excitement about again opening to inside dining has everyone eager to reopen. Shipments of local farm vegetables several times a week diminish the time from farm to chopsticks. The Wok of Flame chefs know how to serve the best American style Chinese Food, but they also prepare traditional Mandarin, Hunan, Szechuan and vegetarian options to match every palate. Favorite dishes include pork chow mein, general chicken, cream cheese wontons, and egg rolls. They

The “Best Pizza” category is always highly competitive, and in 2022, Enterprise readers have chosen Lamppost Pizza as the best in town. After establishing a successful parlor in Sacramento back in 1982, Jim Matthews and Linda Prato partnered with Tim and Marilyn Brophy to bring Lamppost Pizza to Davis in 1994. Since that time, they expanded the dining room, added a patio, extended the menu and added a fine selection of craft beers. Tim passed away in 2001 and Marilyn retired in 2010. Jim and Linda still own Lamppost but Davis natives Mike Bryner and Janet Bernauer are
the people managing the place and taking care of the customers. Lamppost offers automatic discounts on orders of two or more pizzas, “and our pizza sizes are larger than our competitors.” The menu focuses on pizza made with the finest ingredients, along with pastas, sandwiches, burgers, salads and appetizers to please the palates of all ages. Pizza offerings range from the basic pizza with your choice of toppings to several specialty pizzas pioneered by Lamppost in the early 1980s. Anne Marie and Kevin Crilly opened Zia’s Delicatessen in Davis in 1995, after relocating to Davis from the Bay Area. The San Francisco natives missed their neighborhood deli. Anne Marie’s father and grandfather both had their own butcher shops in San Francisco. Anne Marie was accustomed to being behind a meat counter where you might say she grew up. The Crilly children, Angela and Jonathan, also have grown up behind the meat and cheese counter at Zia’s, and they, too, learned the delicatessen business. Zia’s caters, so your next business meeting or family party needs can be stress-free. Kevin and Anne Marie know there are many shops that specialize in sandwiches in Davis and they want to say, “Thank you to our loyal customers for voting us Best Sandwich. A fixture on G Street for a full 50 years, the Davis Food Co-op has been voted once again as the best Health Food/Organic Store by Davis Enterprise readers. Started by a group of 10 households as a buying club in 1972, the Davis Food Co-op has grown into a fullservice grocery store with nearly 10,000 Owners from the community. After half a century, they are not only looking back on the history and changes that have led to where the Co-op is today, but we are also looking forward to see how they can best serve the growing Yolo County community for years to come. “As a community owned grocery store, the support of the people in Yolo County is

Health Food / Organic Store means the world to us.” The Davis Food Co-op exists to serve as a community store and gathering place for current and future owners, so they have a thriving cooperatively owned business; access to healthful, local and high-quality food; a store that makes environmental sustainability a priority; and staff who are valued, educated and motivated. “While many people know us for our fresh local produce, large variety of bulk and wellness items, deli department, and specialty foods, they may be surprised by how many affordable pantry staples that we carry as well,” Marchese said. “With our Co+op Deals, we offer discounts on a wide
selection of organic, fair trade, environmentally friendly and high-quality items at competitive prices year-round. While many of the local and niche products you find at the Co-op are unique to our store, the one thing that makes us truly unique is that we are a cooperative! Being the only community owned grocery store in Yolo County means that we truly reflect the community that we serve. It also ensures that a customer’s shopping dollars stay in the community that they live in.” The Co-op is planning some celebrations for its 50th anniversary, including an event in May, a collaborative beer with Dunloe Brewing and working with local mosaic artist Wes Horn to make a commemorative art piece that

Davis’ best yogurt can be found at YoloBerry, 316 C St., in a historic 1929 home across from Central Park. “The fact that this was once a home — an old one at that — provided the ideal atmosphere when I started YoloBerry,” owner Lee Pflugrath said. “We provide an upbeat atmosphere where customers can gather on the front lawn, sit on chairs or benches outside or remain inside. Davis Enterprise readers again voted Dr. Marian Zingaro, DC, in business since 1991, as the Best Chiropractor for 2022. Besides being fully vaccinated, Dr. Zingaro has taken COVIDprevention practices such as using a private entrance, covering and sanitizing surfaces, using a UV-C air filter, creating an open-air office with outside ventilation, and nonoverlapping patient scheduling. Zingaro’s goal is to help patients recover, heal and live pain-free. With more than 20 years experience treating musculoskeletal conditions, she uses gentle chiropractic techniques and massage to treat acute and chronic pain, injuries and repetitive stress. experience that healing goes hand-in-hand with relaxation, trust and empathy. “At first, I thought I wanted to be a medical doctor and I
started college in a six-year medical program” she said. “After completing my premed requirements, I became disillusioned with conventional medicine and decided to pursue the body-mind connection and studied psychology. I graduated with a Master’s Degree in Counseling. Although I worked as a counselor for six years, my interest in medicine was still strong and I was continually reading medical literature. “At this time I became very good friends with an elderly medical doctor and I saw that even though this doctor wanted to treat patients with nutritional and other more natural methods, she mostly wrote prescriptions for her patients. I was very aware that prescription medicine has side effects and rarely resolves the
actual cause of a problem. For this reason, I wanted to choose a way to treat patients that did not include prescription medicine and helped the body to stimulate its own healing ability. I then became interested in manual medicine and decided to become a chiropractor.” In this day of high-tech/ low human contact, a patient receives at least an hour of Zingaro’s attention and care. “I blend massage and other soft tissue techniques with chiropractic care and I perform all of the work. (Most chiropractors hire other people to do pieces of the work to be performed.) I am also trained as a counselor and can listen deeply to your physical concerns. Sometimes patients are confused by a diagnosis or medical information. For many

Are you Pilates curious? Pilates strengthens your center (your core), balances your body, and gives you long, lean muscles — “Think of a dancer!” says Laura Shearer, the owner of Lift Pilates, voted the top Pilates studio by readers of the Davis Enterprise. “I brought Pilates to Davis in 2000,” Shearer said. “At the time, I was managing programs and member services at the Davis Athletic Club and there was no Pilates in Davis. I brought in a Pilates instructor who started teaching mat Pilates — I remember it was such a wildly popular class we had at least 50 or 60 students.” She had read about Pilates in a women’s magazine and took private Pilates lessons, then found a studio where she

Shearer started her business inside the Davis Athletic Club (which is now Get Fit Davis) with one “Reformer” apparatus in the lobby — “I put a Shoji Screen around it for privacy!” Her friend Nancy Chadwick was a personal trainer at the DAC who found a small space for the to share, where the dishes and china were sold in
the old Discovery’s Building on E Street. “I had three Reformers in that small space, and Nancy had her personal training equipment in the other half. About a year later moved to the brand new Chen Building in 2005. My teaching style has gone from contemporary to classical, from teaching group classes to now teaching only privates and duets, but I still have a focus on injuries
and special populations — I love rehabbing people, then teaching them to do fun Pilates tricks!” Most clients have never done Pilates before. Pilates meets you at your level and grows with you, according to Shearer. Even if you’ve never done a movement class or exercised in your life, you can do Pilates. On the flip side, if you’re an elite athlete or an experienced mover, she says Pilates has something to offer, too. Shearer works with people who are deconditioned, overweight, have joint problems, injured athletes, etc., and some who are just plain Pilates curious. “My studio is the only Classical Pilates studio with with original Gratz apparatus in the greater Sacramento Area,” she said. “I have all the

Owned by Susan and Larry Stieber, who started as franchisees in 2009 with their first center in San Ramon, the portfolio has grown to 11 European Wax Centers. The team acquired the Davis EWC in 2017 from a local family. “We love the city of Davis and appreciate the support that our guests have shown us throughout the closures and reopening,” Susan Stieber told The Enterprise. “Larry and I look forward to continuing our presence in Davis and growing with EWC in Northern California.” They are known for their expertise, sanitation and hygiene procedures. All the wax specialists
are licensed and also undergo extensive in-house training. All the associates are taught how to provide recommendations and solutions to our guests based on their needs. The signature Comfort Wax is a proprietary blend of the highest-quality natural beeswax sourced from Europe plus other skin-soothing ingredients. This allows it to gently remove hair for a virtually painless experience during the wax service. “At our core, we are here to help people feel unapologetically confident,” Steiber said. “Just one 15-minute reservation can help transform someone’s mood, someone’s day — even their perception of themselves. We take waxing seriously because we take our guests seriously. Our expertise to make every person that walks through our door leaves feeling like their self.”

Buccieri stated that the organization prides itself in putting their residents first while providing the best 0ffcampus experience they can. With the awards showering down upon them, clearly they’re doing something right. “All of our apartment complexes offer spacious

holiday dinners, raffles, donut days and more to make them feel at home and provide the opportunity to make friends.” Much like the update the Second Street Storage facility received, the DMC constantly looks for ways to make environmentally minded improvements to its facilities. Beyond that, Buccieri lauds the efforts of their maintenance teams to uphold levels of excellence for residents. “We ask our residents, ‘What can we do better or improve on?’ This helps us direct efforts toward providing wanted upgrades and events to provide socialization, fitness and a successful living environment,” said Buccieri.” We strive to provide an exceptional housing environment and feel very proud that our tenants have appreciated our efforts by voting us No. 1!”

it weekly to keep everything dusted and tidy.” Along with the ecofriendliness, 2nd Street Storage also offers peace of mind in a variety of ways. An on-site attendant is present during office hours, video surveillance runs around the clock and — for those worried about moving heavy items — on-site dollies and carts are available for moving convenience. As it’s a two-story facility, there’s also a passenger elevator for easy transport. Pleased as McNece is with these offerings to the community, he’s most excited about the 145 new storage units they’ve recently opened. “When we originally built the place, we left a quarter of it as a large, open warehouse area where we put large units that

Now we can service up to 150 and offer more individual units for homeowners, students putting their apartment stuff in there or small businesses.”

The clinic, which opened nearly 50 years ago, has in its own right been named Davis’ best animal clinic many times over by Enterprise readers. In 2017, Regan purchased the clinic from its previous owner, Cliff Gravem. Despite the ongoing pandemic, Regan and her team have continued to go above and beyond in earning the community’s trust. All five doctors at the clinic are graduates of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, one of the top-ranked veterinary schools in the world. They have a combined 60-plus years of experience.

work collaboratively to provide our patients with the best possible care.” While many veterinary practices pay their 50
veterinarians based on commission, Midtown staff are not, meaning that they have no incentive to offer additional products or services that aren’t necessary. “I believe it is important to work with each client as an individual and to find the treatment options that will be both practical and effective.” Regan said. Regan’s practice at Midtown Animal Clinic offers modern facilities with state of the art equipment including digital dental radiography, ultrasound and in-house lab capabilities. “We would like to thank all of our wonderful clients for voting for us,” Regan said. “This honor could not be achieved without our amazing staff and wonderful clients being supportive. South Davis Veterinary Center opened in 2003 at the El Macero Shopping Center and moved to its current location in the same center in 2012. A few years later it still needed additional space to serve its patients, then added a second location on Russell Boulevard in West Davis. The West Davis location has a fear-reducing architectural plan with separate dog and cat examination rooms and treatment areas. The feline rooms have exam tables with hiding nooks for the timid and some wall and window mounted climbing areas for the bold. The dog rooms are large with doors opening to the garden so vets can bypass the waiting area or examine dogs outdoors. Even more changes happened in the last year. The South and

West Davis Veterinary Centers are still responding to the altered delivery of veterinary care during the pandemic. “We were so happy to finally be able to welcome clients into the hospitals again this year,” said Dr. Cara Bradley, who owns the centers along with Dr.
Michael Yackey. “It was lovely to let people get to see the inside of the West Davis location, along with their pets. This seems delayed as we started working in the building October 2020 with curbside service, but did not allow clients back in until June 2021.”
People still want to see the patient treatment area and the separate dog and cat treatment rooms, so the practice will close on Saturday, May 7, and allow people to see the hospital. “This open house will be for the public and not limited to our clients as everyone is welcome.” Both hospitals now have full AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) accreditation. Professional training is a constant commitment for the staff. Doctors have completed programs in dentistry, physical rehabilitation, stem cell therapy and ultrasound. “We employ a high number of registered veterinary technicians to care for people’s pets,” Bradley said. “One of our veterinarians (Dr. Lacie Carlisle at the South Davis location) completed

“Drink local water,” says Paul Taylor, owner of H2O To Go. “That is it. This is who we are, this is why we exist. We strive to be the standard to which others are compared.” And Davis customers appreciate that standard, voting H2O To Go the top water-delivery service once again. “I could talk about the products we offer that nobody else does,” Taylor said, “but that isn’t really it. The ‘corporate office’ is about 15 feet from the cash register with a great view
