...financial aid? Financial aid is money used to help you pay for your education and can come from federal, state, institutional and private sources. Financial aid includes scholarships, grants, loans, work-study jobs and tuition waivers.

...a scholarship? A scholarship is merit-based and is awarded for academic, athletic and/or special performance achievements and DOES NOT have to be repaid.

...a grant? A grant is awarded by the state or federal government and is usually based on financial need and DOES NOT have to be repaid.

...a loan? A loan is money that you borrow and MUST be repaid with interest. Student loans can come from the federal government, from private entities such as a bank or from other financial institutions. If you need to borrow money to pay for college, start with federal loans. Private student loans are generally more expensive.
