Describe Explain Evaluate

Tell me about it – what it is, size, shape, colour, number, where it is....... DO NOT tell me WHY or give reasons. DO NOT use the word because Tell me WHY and give reasons —use the word because or so Give examples.

Review the information and bring it together to write a conclusion. Explain and prove each of your views.

Choose the right answer.

Write the answers in a list using commas or bullet points.

This usually means the same as explain

Calculate Describe the relationship between...

Suggest Describe the differences between ...’ Compare & Contrast between ...’

Use the numbers or the graph to work out the answer. Show the working out. Say clearly how the two things in the question are linked.

Usually it wants you to explain your own ideas— so be clear. There is usually more than one correct answer so if you explain well you should get the marks. Only tell them what is different—e.g. things that are NOT the same.

Tell them clearly what is DIFFERENT and what is the SAME. Use lots of connectives. E.g. however, therefore, even though......
