material known to man. Its use pre-dates recorded history and though the processes
used to preserve it have changed over time it has never been improved on as a clothing material. Over 4000 years ago leather was being used in China as currency and for weapons and armor. It is even referred to in The Bible, Genesis 3:21. It is durable, breathable and abrasion resistant and the same qualities that made it valuable to The Ancients make it invaluable to the modern motorcyclist. Many cultures believed that when they wore the skin of another animal they took on some of its characteristics and gained some of its strength. Wearing leather communicates that strength as well as purpose and identity.

The leather jacket as we know it started as a utilitarian garment designed for work and combat. After use in two world wars it became powerfully invested with the psychological and social significance it carries with it today. Leather jackets were an integral part of the uniforms of many armies and after WWII there was a proliferation of surplus jackets available to the public. During this time the leather jacket retained its symbolic association with the warriors who brought them back and into the mainstream. Soon, the adventurers who adopted them after the war became highly stylized individuals in contrast with the uniformed legions of just a few years before. After difficult tours of duty, many men returning from WWII were unable to re-enter the mainstream of American life. With a surplus leather jacket, a disaffected attitude and a motorcycle, a legend was born.

out old world craftsmanship by hand. We have over 150 people working at Vanson with an average of eight years of experience each. That totals 1200 years of experience behind every Vanson garment. There are 49 steps involved in putting together our simplest jacket, and up to 126 steps in the construction of our most complicated pieces. All of these steps are done by hand here in America by people who love what they do and are good at it.

he care and feeding of your Vanson product is simple and straightforward. To clean your top grain cowhide jacket simply use a terry washcloth and tap water to remove road grime. Stay away from commercial leather cleaners as they often contain solvents
which can take some of the finish along with the dirt. Nothing beats simple materials and a little elbow grease. While your jacket is still damp is the perfect time to apply Vanson leather balm, a natural product made with vegetable oils which mimic some of the fats and waxes used in the tanning process. Follow the directions on the bottle. Do not use Vanson leather balm on suede. Stay away from waterproofers and silicones and heavily-oiled products. These products fill the pores of your jacket and prevent it from breathing; one of the many characteristics that makes leather so much better than many man-made materials. These products also lubricate the fibers in the hide, contributing to stretch and potentially
coating. Our Cordura® garments can be mild soap like Ivory Dishwashing Liquid and cold or warm water. Rinse with a hose and hang to dry. DO NOT put a Vanson Cordura garment in the washing machine. DO NOT assume that the gentle cycle is gentle enough. It isn’t. The Polyurethane coating on the back stabilizes the woven nylon; glues it together. The washing machine will erode that backing and you will be left with threads. This coating makes the Cordura waterproof. However, due to the many zippers and seams on these jackets we refer to them as water resistant.

CORDURA
Cordura is extremely tough and protective. The only environment in which it is delicate is in the washing machine. Like our Sport Rider and PROperf™ line, our Cordura® jackets, as seen in Chapter 7, are backed with leather in the shoulder and elbow/forearm impact zones. They will accept hard or soft armor and a backpad, all of which should be removed before washing.
weakening it. No matter what the advertising for any waterproofer says you will never make your leather jacket truly waterproof, you will only irreparably change it. Our leather balm will make your top grain or horsehide garment very water resistant for half an hour to forty-five minutes in a moderate to medium rain. It will not hurt your leather to get it wet or even completely soaked through. It will only hurt it to be dried with heat or in direct sunlight. Just hang it over a chair or on a wide garment hanger and let it air dry at room temperature. Repeated soaking will leach out the fats and oils used in the tanning process so the more often it gets wet the more often in needs balm. If it never gets wet it still needs to be balmed a few times a year. Vanson Leather Balm can also be applied on our horsehide but, because there are so many more waxes and fats involved in the tanning of these skins, it should be used sparingly and worked in thoroughly.
WAXED COTTON Waxed cotton is a very traditional waterproof material. First developed for sailors as foul weather gear, it was then perfected by the British as lightweight hunting outerwear. In the 1960’s it came into vogue as the ultimate in rain gear for the discerning motorcyclist. To care for your Vanson waxed cotton jacket simply wash it with a hose and let it air dry. Then, to apply the Vanson wax, use a blow dryer to raise the surface temperature of your jacket and work it in by hand. VANSON Waxed Cotton jackets are also seen in Chapter 7.
CUSTOM FIT
Vanson motorcycle garments are designed to be worn on a motorcycle. The fit is specific to the application. Though many of our motorcycle jackets are worn in urban markets as high fashion, it is their credibility as tools that makes them desirable as possessions. Our jackets are primarily sized by chest circumference. Determine your chest circumference and begin there. This is your size and it can also be related to our garments sized XS-XXL and to women’s sizes 4-20.
So, you are not one of the mythical average creatures that magazines and clothing manufacturers would have us believe that we should be to fit into their clothes. With Vanson you don’t need to endure sleeves that are too short or too long, strangling collars or bare ankles. We specialize in fitting non-standard individuals with minor changes such as sleeve or jacket length to full custom made-to-measure roadrace suits and everything in between. We offer a-la-carte pricing for simple changes and a flat fee for full custom, all of which is delineated on our pricelist. We guarantee the fit on all of our custom garments when our measure form is properly filled out and when all of the built-in mathematical checks work out as specified. Once we review that form we may decide that you are not a custom at all. You may fit into a slightly modified standard size which saves you money while not compromising fit in any way. This is determined by our team of designers and fit professionals. Your Vanson dealer has all of these forms and has been trained by our representatives in how to properly determine your size. Also available at your dealer are our color swatches, Vanson measuring device and the benefit of his or her experience.
Fit can be subjective. What feels snug on one can feel loose on another. Vanson garments are designed to be worn snugly. If you plan to use the Vanson armor with your garment this needs to be considered as you are trying it on. There are no hard and fast rules about sizing up or down based on armor or not, just as there are no hard and fast rules about body shapes and sizes. There is absolutely no consistency at all in sizing from one clothing manufacturer to another. Conversely, if you start with sizes much larger than your measurements indicate you may end up not only uncomfortable but also inadequately protected against weather and road. The stiffness of a new Vanson garment is sometimes confused with tightness. This is because the leather needs to be convinced to give where you need it to. This means that your garment will learn to accommodate to your particular shape. Not every style fits the same way. The cut of a motorcycle jacket is different from a traditional garment fit. Not every body type can wear every style. Your Vanson dealer can help point out which person might be more appropriate for a CHP than an AZ, or a BREEZE instead of a CSRV. Some styles are so specific that what may feel like a fit problem might actually be a design feature. For example, the sleeves on a Vanson motorcycle jacket are canted forward an average of 17 degrees from a standing position with arms at your sides. When the jacket is zipped with your arms at your sides you may feel a little tightness across the chest and the sleeves may seem too long. When you reach for the handlebars all this changes. As the arms come up the logic behind the fit becomes apparent. The chest loosens up, the sleeves that seemed long fall perfectly at the wrist and the tightness across the chest disappears. These jackets are designed for riding and that’s what they excel at.
CUSTOM DESIGN Vanson Leathers offers full custom design. Custom can mean a made-to-measure existing style or designing and making real your own personalized view of a leather garment. This might be as simple as making a coat in your favorite color with a personalized emblem or as complicated as mixing and matching collars and pockets from multiple styles. If you send us your drawing or a picture of your logo we can scan it and our computer cutting machine will render it exactly in leather. If you would like a group of team or club jackets made we can cut your graphics in infinite quantities on our water jet which can slice through any material, even steel, with a cut as fine as a human hair. You will see many of these custom garments in this catalog as we have made it a point to take pictures of real people in their favorite jackets, pants and roadrace suits. Since each garment of this nature is unique, each of these original designs must be reviewed to determine the level of difficulty in creating it and the price. Though only Vanson can determine this price, your Vanson dealer is always the best conduit for this flow of information. Through them we are always happy to discuss your special project.

up or take in your garment if you’ve changed physically in the years since you purchased your Vanson garment. Some of these repairs are straightforward (zippers and crash damage) and some (re-sizing) must be looked at and priced on an individual basis. You can return your jacket for repair through your dealer or send it directly to us. Vanson offers a one year warranty from date of purchase on all garments against any defects in workmanship and materials. The most important part of your warranty is filling out and mailing in the warranty registration tag attached to every garment. This tag has the unit number on it and allows us to trace the garment on its path through the manufacturing process. We can then track it to the dealer who purchased it and eventually sells it to you. In addition, we can also follow any subsequent warranty repair or alterations done over time. We are proud of our products and of the people who make them and we embrace the opportunity to keep you happy long after your initial purchase.
WASH AND RE-DYE You may want to consider Vanson’s wash and re-dye service. First, we wash the garment with lanolin and the same oils used in the tanning process to restore all of the lubricants that have been leached out through aging and exposure to the elements. Then we strip off the top coat and touch up any areas that are abraded or discolored, using the original dyes, and re-seal the leather for a finish much like a new leather jacket. This is a completely unique service offered only by Vanson. It can fully rejuvenate tired, worn leather, thus extending and enhancing the value of your original purchase.

ADJUSTABLE WAISTBAND
The patented Avenger Vent System ( U.S. Pat. #4513451) provides the largest controllable vent area of any jacket. In this elegantly simple system, two panels on the front of the jacket fold down to expose perforated leather panels behind. This cooling method distinguishes itself from other manufacturer’s venting systems by preventing the jacket from ballooning and changing size with each vent you open. The Avenger Vent can be seen in Chapters 2 and 5.
Vanson’s patented (U.S. Pat #5.507.042) Air Curtain Vent is featured on our COBRA jacket. This system features a perforated jacket front with an airtight membrane behind. In this membrane are panels that zip down and fold into pockets which allow air to flow through the jacket and out the exit vents in back. By putting the vents on the inside, an allowance is made for graphics to be applied to the jacket front which isn’t possible with the Avenger vent. Like the Avenger, this system prevents billowing and stretching when the vents are open. The Air Curtain Vent can be seen on the Cobra jacket in chapter 2.
Many women have told us over the years that their choices for properly fitted motorcycle gear with adequate protection has been limited. We at Vanson have heard you and in this catalog you will find an entire chapter devoted to women’s gear. We offer over 26 styles designed by women for women. Each time you see this icon you know that you will never have to settle for a man’s jacket that doesn’t fit you or make do with a limited selection of women’s gear again. These garments can be seen in chapter 9.
Vanson was the first manufacturer to use DuPont ComforMax ™ IB in a garment. This state-of-the-art material is the ultimate in low bulk insulation. It provides 14 times more insulating power than the taffeta lining found in many leather jackets, and with much less bulk. The Streamliner vest, seen in Chapter 8, has two hand pockets, two zippered pockets and three huge internal cargo pockets. It has a black nylon outer shell and is reversible to International Safety Orange. It can be worn alone or will snap into your Vanson jacket. Adjustable sidelaces allow for universal fit and unisex sizing. Don’t be fooled by imitations. The Vanson Streamliner is a state-of-the-art garment made in America with the latest high-tech materials.
Our Air Induction Ram system (A.I.R., Patent pending), available on the FALCON, 3FA, 3ATV and Outback jackets in Chapter 7 and as an option on other coats in the Sport Rider family, follows the same concept as the Avenger and Air Curtain patents. By backing the open vent with a material of fixed circumference, this prevents the sleeve from growing and the armor shifting out of position when the vent is open. The A.I.R. system consists of a zipper on the sleeve inseam at the elbow. The air enters the sleeve through perforated leather behind the open zipper and flows up a channel which leads directly to the armpit, cooling you by carrying heat away and out the nearby exit vents.
All of the garments which bear the Zip-To Icon feature a zipper which enables it to be attached to a corresponding pant or jacket via a Spandex panel. This allows both stretch and flexibility during normal movement and secure attachment in a crash scenario. This feature gives many of the protective benefits of a two-piece roadrace suit while still allowing the convenience of two separate garments. The Spandex keeps the jacket from riding up and also helps keep cold air out. With this system you can infinitely mix and match our perfed and non-perfed or leather and Cordura garments.
Vanson uses 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material on a number of our garments. Scotchlite™ Reflective Material enhances the visibility of the wearer in low light and night time riding situations by creating a brighter image that motorists can more readily see from a distance. This reflective material returns light back to the light source. Vehicle headlights, and depending on variable circumstances, can be up to 1500 times brighter than white material. Vanson uses Scotchlite™ as piping on all of the jackets and pants seen in Chapter 10 and on items elsewhere in the catalog bearing this icon, though it can be special ordered on any garment.
First introduced on the COBRA jacket, our adjustable waistband allows for up to four inches of adjustment. Available now on coats throughout the Sport Rider family, this feature allows accurate fit throughout the changing seasons as layers beneath the jacket change. It also helps in fitting non-standard individuals and allows them to fit accurately in an off-the-rack jacket instead of building one. HARD ARMOR The latest development in our Grand Prix Armor is the race-bred Floating Armor System (F.A.S., Patent Pending). This system features a moveable sandwich of materials including dual density foam and formed thermo-plastic shells. It is designed to absorb impact energy and disperse it over a wider area for maximum protection while allowing a wide range of movement and comfort. Standard equipment in our professional roadrace suits, each piece of armor, larger and more effective than the previous generation GP armor, is attached via a sturdy elastic harness which Velcros to the garment and allows the outer shell to move independently of your body, increasing both safety and comfort. This armor is available for roadrace suits and all jackets with the Armor-Ready icon. It comes in three sizes, the smallest for sizes 34-38, the next for 40-46 and the largest for sizes 48-54.

THE VANSON BACK PAD The Vanson back pad is available in multiple sizes, each of which consists of thermo-plastic scales riveted to dual density foam. The back pad attaches inside the jacket via Velcro™ tabs, one on the liner in the small of the back and the other attached to a triangular elastic panel at the back of the jacket collar. The connection of this panel and the backpad via industrial grade Velcro™ allows for solid attachment while maintaining the integrity of fit through a wide range of movement by distributing the weight of the backpad (10 oz.) across the shoulders and away from the neckline. In our roadrace suits and our technical jackets, seen in Chapter 3, we take this concept one step further by fixing the top of the backpad to two elastic straps which drop down from the shoulder seams, distributing the weight of the pad much like the straps of a backpack. Our three scale pad fits in men’s jackets up to size 38 and most women’s jackets. The four scale backpad fits in men’s sizes from 40-50 and the five scale fits in sizes 52 and above. Six and seven scale pads are available to fit in our professional roadrace suits, as well as a strap-on back pad for use with other garments. ARMOR READY Garments that bear this icon accept Vanson body armor. Our armor is designed to fit in our jackets, pants and suits between the lining and the leather to provide an additional layer of protection between you and the road. Access to the Velcro™ fields that hold the armor in place in the jackets is through the zipper in the lining above the waistband in the small of the back. Access on the pants is through the unattached lining at the fly area. All jackets with this icon accept shoulder and elbow/forearm armor as well as spine protectors. All pants with this icon accept hip and knee armor.

The Vanson Technical jackets seen in this chapter are race-bred and street ready. We have combined the fit and features of our top of the line race suits with practical details from our Sport Rider collection. All of the Technical jackets featured in this section include Kevlar stretch panels from the base of the armholes down the inside of each sleeve for less weight and to minimize bulk. We’ve included perforated leather expander sections behind the armhole to increase the range of motion.
Our Cobra Adjustable Waistband will give you the snug fit of a custom garment. The Spyder jacket comes with built in foam padding at the upper back and is partially perforated. There is a fully perforated Technical jacket called the PROPerf™ Velociraptor. All of these jackets come standard with our street armor in the shoulders and elbow/ forearm and all of them will accept our PRO4 spine protector.

Using a state of the art product called ComforTemp®, developed by schoeller®, a Swiss company Vanson introduces the Kodiak. ComforTemp is a new group of “smart “ textiles. Developed from the technology designed to protect astronauts against extreme temperature fluctuations, ComforTemp is a thin foam material with a soft fleece coating. Encapsulated in the foam are microcapsules of material that store body heat. When outside temperatures fall below body temperature the capsules release that stored heat, thereby warming you. As your temperature rises, the capsules once again retain that heat, thus recycling your own body heat to warm you again and again. The Kodiak performs like no other neckwarmer can. It is still the same thickness and also top-grain, but because it is handled and finished differently the outcome is a softer, semi-nude, rich and supple hide that lends itself to traditional styling. Truly the best of both worlds, JET gives you the plush feel of nude leather while retaining the more durable wear characteristics of our top grain hides. Gloves of Distinction Vanson has been making gloves by hand for over 25 years. Remaining faithful to old-fashioned, un-hurried precision we carefully create each pair, one at a time. You begin with the finest glove-tanned Cowhide and Deerskins. You sort the skins by grain, cut according to the stretch of the grain, and stitch with surgical precision. The gloves are then moistened, shaped over heated forms until dry and finally, carefully buffed to bring out the natural luster of full grain drum dyed skins. Vanson uses specially tanned Cowhide and Deerskin for our gloves. These leathers are tanned for stretch and strength. Both the Deerskin and Cowhide are “naked” leathers that have not been “painted” over with a finish. As they age over time with exposure to the elements, natural discoloration can occur. However, this also means that gloves cut from these leathers will breathe and wick moisture as well as insulate. This will help keep your hands warm and dry for all season comfort. These leathers are tanned for strength and will afford the wearer comfort and protection.
The Super Rocket The newest variation of our most popular glove: the Super Rocket. The classic style of the rocket, the soft feel of deerskin.
Glove tanned Deerskin has a looser fiber structure that makes the leather feel plump and soft. A Deerskin glove will stretch to fit your hand, and then relax again when not being worn. Glove tanned Cowhide has a slightly tighter fiber than Deerskin. This makes the leather more compact and a little less “stretchy” than deerskin. Once a Cowhide glove has broken in it will mold to the shape of your hand and retain that shape, just like old cowboy boots. The Matrix below will allow you to size yourself for Vanson gloves. If your hand does not fit within any of these measurements, or you know your finger length is not average, we can make custom fit gloves. We can even accommodate unique situations such as a missing digit. Provide us with a tracing or photocopy of both hands, and the measurement around the knuckles: we’ll take it from there. While we can customize most of the products in this catalog, we are limited in what we can do with gloves. Because of the need for special stretch in glove leather, it is tanned in a certain manner, and colors are limited. Primarily, gloves with cuffs are the only styles that we can modify. Also, while our X-ray’s come in black, we can actually give you any color of bones on the top!

This small leather pouch was initially designed to hold Transmitters which are instrumental in scoring motorcycle races. The grommets on the back allow the Accessory Pouch, holding a transmitter, to be “zip-tied” to a motorcycle. We have found many other uses for the Accessory Pouch as well, from protecting a cell-phone, or pager to holding cigarettes. his catalog is dedicated Betty Lowery and Gaetano DiMille. Betty and Guy have taught and inspired an entire generation of people at Vanson in the art of leather work.
