Sanguine Estate Awarded Heathcote’s Top Wine Trophy The Hunter family’s Sanguine Estate has taken out the premier Heathcote Wine Show award – the Grand Terroir – for a second year.

CONTENTS

The award was presented on Saturday night following two days of judging by a panel chaired by new Australian Grape and Wine Authority acting chairman, former Yalumba chief winemaker Brian Walsh. Tony Hunter, Max Hunter and Jodi Marsh from Sanguine with wine show judging panel chairman Brian Walsh (second left).

Mr Walsh told Heathcote winemakers the standard of their wines had stepped up another notch in the last year. “We have looked for wines with balance and harmony, wines with grace” Mr Walsh said. Mr Walsh said the Heathcote Wine Show was a celebration for the region’s winemaking community. “Heathcote has a lot of respect in the Australian wine community.”

Wine show committee chairman Graeme Quigley said judges had awarded 19 gold medals for the 2014 show. “The show puts our wines under the scrutiny of highly respected judges from around Australia and the number of gold medals awarded this year again reinforces the standing of Heathcote wines on the national and international stages,” Mr Quigley said.

All About Heathcote The history of Heathcote is one similar to so many small towns of its era - once a bustling gold mining and logging town, bringing people of many different cultures and nationalities, with hopes of making a gold fortune. To the north of the town, those immigrants disillusioned with mining struck a new type of gold, with the development of land for grazing, cropping and vines. Henning Rathjen was one of the early German settlers to arrive to the Colbinabbin area, at the northern end of the Mount Camel Range, in today’s Heathcote wine region, in the 1850s. He planted one of the earliest vineyards in the region, before the arrival of the vine louse, phylloxera, which resulted in the destruction of the vines. The land was then used for agricultural purposes. In the bush to the north-east of Heathcote, Italian immigrants planted more vines, some of which still exist. More recently Albino Zuber and Bruno Pangrazio were responsible for plantings, which today contribute to some of the iconic wines that the Heathcote wine region is renowned for - both at home, and internationally. Located to the north of the Great Dividing Range, the Heathcote region is at elevations between 160m and 380m. The majority of soil under vine is Cambrian – red and deep with excellent water retention.

In fact, some vignerons do not irrigate, aiming for smaller fruit that is intensely rich in flavour. The region’s rainfall is evenly distributed between the seasons and the climate is temperate, with cooling winds blowing from the south. Heathcote wines are defined by their inky depth of colour and deep, dark, complex fruit. Voluptuous and well balanced, acid and tannin meld together in a way that does not dominate the fruit, but gives the wine great cellaring ability.

The region’s southern vineyards experience cooler temperatures during the growing season. These can vary between 1.8 and 1.4 degrees Celsius lower, resulting in an extended growing season. This variation in temperature during the grape ripening period results in a spread of picking dates and subsequently the development of a range of different flavour profiles.

20 GOLF LINKS LANE, HEATHCOTE

These characteristics are a product not only of winemaking skills, but of the vineyard itself. It is the ‘terroir’ of the different vineyards that is responsible. Terroir is the interaction of the soil, sunlight, rainfall and micro climates and it creates unique conditions determining the way the vine, and hence the wine, develop. While the terroirs of Heathcote differ, they all produce high quality fruit – and can be credited with the burgeoning fame and demand for Heathcote wines. The size of the region, by implication, results in variations in climate, geology and topography. The main variations are apparent as one travels north. The north is drier than the south and typically receives an average of 5-10mm less rain a month during the vines’ growing season (October to April).

The fertile red soil with good drainage properties in weathered Cambrian Greenstone Rock has consistently produced high quality grapes. At this year’s Vintage wine festival we will be concentrating on our Kennedy’s 2009 Shiraz, Kennedy’s 2010 Cambrian Shiraz & Kennedy’s 2011 Pink Hills Rose. Wine Making We have a variety that will suit your palate & budget.

2010 was our sixth vintage and we have continued to work on identifying the areas of our vineyard which produce the best parcels of fruit. For the second year in a row we have considered our fruit to be of an excellent quality and decided with our winemaker Sandro Mosele to produce our special Kennedy Cambria.

This beautiful four bedroom home is on over an acre of manicured grounds and overlooks the 8th green of the Heathcote Golf Course. This home has two complete kitchens with dishwashers, three bathrooms and three toilets. The upstairs large bedroom combined with living area and bathroom has a balcony that overlooks the beautiful Heathcote Golf Course. Three of the bedrooms have reverse cycle air conditioners and all with ceiling fans and built-in robes. The two downstairs living areas have gas log fire places along with reverse cycle air conditioning to cover those chilly winter mornings or the balmy summer nights. There are verandahs to the front and rear of the home. The double garage is powered and comfortably fits two cars. The gardens have been well planned and are established to provide a combination of beauty and low maintenance. Stroll in the gardens and the beauty and planning is self-evident with water being in abundance with a bore at 55 metres depth, water tank, dam and town water. The dam to the rear of the property abounds with reflection. All-in-all this home has it all. The space, the water, the views and not to mention the fact that this home would make a perfect B&B or would provide ample room for the extended family and only 100km approx. from Melbourne airport/CBD and an hour from Echuca. An inspection of this beautiful property will more than satisfy the discerning buyer.

The 2010 vintage produced much better yields than those of 2009. The season was well set up with a good profile of moisture after a wet winter. The spring which followed was warm to very warm at times with great rainfall in November & December. This resulted in terrific fruit set and the developing canopy was vibrant. January & February saw several good downpours which together with minimal irrigation kept the canopy healthy leading to even ripening of the crop load.

49-51 ROSS STREET, HEATHCOTE From the moment you walk into the wide front entrance to this home, you feel warm and welcomed from the ornate timber work and quality of this home. The large lounge room that has timber floorboards and decorative timber arches, it also steps into an east facing sunroom that would absorb the morning sun. There are four bedrooms, three with built-in robes. The main bedroom has a lovely corner window seat. The fourth bedroom is a large double room and would ideally suit a teenagers retreat/bedroom. Next to the kitchen is a sitting room and there is a split system air conditioner as well as one in the main bedroom. The slated-floor back room would be suitable as a large office area, child’s playroom, utility room or there is even enough room for a pool table. This beautiful home sits on approximately an acre of land, just around the corner from the Heathcote Golf Course. There is a small front deck to the front of the home, whilst the back decking is the length of the house and would be ideal for those summer days and evenings. The single garage sits to the right hand side of the house, whist the double carport is adjacent to the house on the left hand side. There is an eighteen panel solar system, so need to worry about the monthly power bills. All-in-all this home is excellent quality with the timber woodwork, shedding, land size and locality. An inspection will impress. Very reasonably priced at $425,000.

The fruit was handpicked in an excellent condition on 22nd & 23rd Feb from two separate areas of the vineyard thus giving our winemaker scope to blend and produce the best quality wine. In the winery the fruit was de-stemmed and fermented in small open fermenters using indigenous yeasts and gentle plunging. After pressing to mostly neutral French oak barriques, the wine was allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation in spring without inoculation and remained in barrel until it was bottled in October 2011 using the taint free DIAM technical cork.

Tasting Notes

Of the Kennedy line up of wines, The Cambria is elevated in every way. It is produced from minute parcels of our best fruit in the best years. The Cambria is darker and more broody on the nose than our Estate Shiraz. It’s a wine that requires and deserves time in the glass to let it open. Dark ripe berry fruit is obvious, but a lovely, almost smokey charcuterrie element is very inviting. Cracked pepper and cedar box combined in what is a very tempting wine. Lovely layering of Crac French oak is present on the palate, juicy, sweet fruit and soft, velvety tannins that round out a very enjoyable wine experience.

Heathcote wines are defined by their inky depth of colour and deep, dark, complex fruit.
