The room’s decor is inspired by the 1959 sedan de ville Cadillac in the historic vehicle and memorabilia collection on the ground floor of The Depot. The Cadillac Room, which is located on the second floor mezzanine, offers panoramic views of the collection. The Cadillac Room’s key features are the 1950s inspired images and decorations which adorn the walls, and the built in dance floor. The show stopper is the bar which resembles the dash of the 1959 Cadillac, and can be illuminated for that additional wow factor. ‘‘But you don’t have to be a car enthusiast to appreciate the individuality of this room,’’ functions coordinator Kacey Dighton said. ‘‘It is ideal for intimate receptions and celebrations, and the classic black and white theme means whichever colour scheme you choose will work. ‘‘The Cadillac Room opens out on to a mezzanine with glass barriers that allows you to view the collection, or you can choose to close the sliding doors for a bit of privacy.’’

CATERING TO YOUR GUESTS A range of catering options are available to you in The Cadillac Room. Speak to the team about in-house catering options, using the standard kitchen to cater yourself or bringing in an outside caterer. ‘‘One of the weddings we have already hosted had a barbecue food truck with spit roasts come in to cater their special day,’’ Ms Dighton said. ‘‘It was quite a popular option.’’ WHEN SHOULD YOU BOOK? While The Depot is flexible in its booking deadlines, Ms Dighton said booking early is always wise. It is recommended couples book at least six to three months in advance. When booking, be sure to ask how The Depot might be able to tailor a wedding celebration to meet your needs. ‘‘Even before officially opening we received a number of enquiries about weddings and other functions, so booking early assures the venue is available when you need it.” To book The Cadillac Room at The Depot, phone (03) 5881 9000.

KEEP IT SIMPLE While couples want to make sure they have variety for their guests, choosing too many different varieties to suit individual tastes can make the process more difficult than it needs to be.

‘‘If you provide too much of a choice, it becomes quite expensive and the bar staff will tell you it makes their job much harder as well,’’ Mr Bright said. ‘‘I would advise couples to select fewer varieties, but of higher quality products. You should try to please the majority rather than the minority. ‘‘Buying in bulk usually also means you get it at a discounted rate.’’ BE PREPARED Don’t leave choosing your wine, beer and spirits to the last minute. This choice is as important as any other you will make for your big day. ‘‘You should get in early, and put your order in at least a couple of months before the wedding — the more time you give us to get what you need, the better it is for you. ‘‘We’ve got a vast range of knowledge for what specials will be on offer and when, so if you get in early it opens up that window to getting your alcohol at a discounted rate.’’

STICK TO A BUDGET If you follow the advice to this point, going over your budget should not be too much of a concern. But as Mr Bright knows all too well, a few changes here and there can make a big difference. ‘‘Particularly for large scale weddings, you need to make sure you stick as closely to your budget as possible. ‘‘Costs of drinks can add up quite quickly when you have to cater for a large amount of people, so you have to know how much you’re willing to spend early.’’ bride and groom // 7

SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESSES AND SUPPLIERS WAS A KEY FOCUS FOR FINLEY COUPLE MADELINE AND MATT JACKSON WHEN PLANNING THEIR BIG DAY. And to host all of their guests in the small town, the couple had to get creative. ‘‘We chose to have the ceremony at the Finley Golf Club and the reception at the Finley Recreation Reserve because we really wanted to keep our money in the local area and we wanted our guests to come to Finley and stay here,” she said.

‘‘But we had about 160 guests and there are not a lot of options around town to hold an event with such a large number of people. ‘‘We raised the notion of having a marquee on the oval with the Recreation Reserve Committee, and luckily for us they said yes.’’ Personal touches to suit Madeline and Matt’s personalities were heavily peppered throughout the celebrations, evident in

Madeline’s custom made wedding gown with black lace overlay on the bodice and sleeves. Their 18kg wedding cake was also personalised, with each of three tiers representing three of their favourite flavours. The couple planned their perfect celebration over two years, after a romantic proposal when they were visiting New York City, United States in October 2017.

THE IDEAL WEDDING PLAN CONGRATULATIONS, NOW YOU ARE ENGAGED AND YOUR WEDDING IS JUST 12 MONTHS AWAY! A YEAR CAN GO SO QUICKLY AND THERE ARE CERTAIN MILESTONES TO REACH ALONG YOUR PLANNING JOURNEY, SO BELOW IS A MONTH-BY-MONTH GUIDE OF WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE WHEN.

12 MONTHS Find inspiration for the styling/theme of the wedding.

6–8 MONTHS

Draw up a budget of how much you want to spend.

Send save-the-date cards, and specify whether children will or will not be invited.

Ask friends or relatives to be in the wedding party, such as bridesmaids and groomsmen, flower girls and pageboys, ceremony poem or prayer readers.

Buy the bridesmaids’ dresses and buy or advise them on which type of shoes to source.

Pick a wedding date and time: select several options then check these with your venues, celebrant and important guests. Then book in the wedding ceremony venue, reception venue and celebrant.

Book the ceremony entertainment (such as musicians or a DJ).

4–6 MONTHS Design and order the invitations and place settings at the same time, to save money with a bundle deal.

Delegate tasks: you can either plan the wedding yourselves, pay a wedding planner to do it, or delegate some tasks to loved ones you trust.

Buy the wedding rings.

Do the guest list as early as possible, as many bookings relate to this.

Buy any under-garments for the wedding dress before the final fitting, to ensure a streamlined look.

Buy or organise to rent the suits for the groom and groomsmen, and don’t forget the shoes.

Buy jewellery. 8–10 MONTHS Start researching and trying on wedding dress options — and purchase or order in as soon as possible.

Start having dance lessons now for the formal dances. 3 MONTHS

Plan the reception food/choose from menus and book in the caterer.

Mail the wedding invitations.

Plan the styling of your wedding — and either start collecting the items you need, or pay a decorator to co-ordinate this.

Hire wedding-day transport, such as limousines, vintage or other specialty vehicles.

Make an order to the florist for the bouquets, boutonnieres, flowers for close family to wear and flowers for the venues.

Book the hair and make-up artists for the whole bridal party, and have a trial one or two months beforehand.

Book in the photographer and videographer.

Make bookings for the honeymoon, and renew passports if planning an overseas trip.

Register for gifts at your favourite department store — ideally one with an online ordering capacity for out-of-town guests. Book in rental companies if you need to rent anything for the ceremony or reception, such as decorations, chairs, tables, tents, sound equipment. If an engagement party is intended, plan this for the first few months after the engagement. Consider registering for gifts or putting gift suggestions (such as cash towards the honeymoon) on the invitation. 10 // bride and groom

Plan the wedding cake and book in the cake maker.

Purchase bonbonnieres. 2 MONTHS Have the hen’s night and buck’s night. Write the wedding vows. Purchase thank-you gifts for parents and the wedding party. Apply for a marriage licence (your celebrant should be able to help with this).

1 MONTH Do the final RSVP count and chase up any outstanding ones, then finalise catering numbers. Have the final wedding dress fitting, and bring the maid of honour along to learn how to bustle the dress. Have the dress pressed and store it neatly at home. Ensure every item is purchased for the bridesmaids’ and groomsmen’s outfits, right down to the shoes, jewellery/ cufflinks, undergarments and men’s socks. Call all key vendors to confirm arrangements, make payments, fill in any last-minute forms and submit required itineraries. Make personalised itineraries for the wedding party members and any other key wedding vendors, including the day’s proceedings with times and a list of key contact numbers, and nominate a person responsible for each key area on the day so vendors know who to talk to in case of an emergency. Also, organise someone to return any hired items the day after the wedding. Make a wedding program to be handed out to guests on the day. Do the reception seating chart and send to the wedding planner/ decorator or related person. 2 WEEKS Give a list of essential photographs to the photographer, including any key family pics you want, to ensure you don’t miss out. Confirm a final song list with the DJ or musician, and the songs for important moments – such as the walk-in to the reception, the first dance, the father-daughter dance, and the exit song for the end of the night – and an indication as to what time these should occur. The bride should get a haircut and colour. 1 WEEK The groom and groomsmen should go for their final fitting and pick up their suits. Call all wedding vendors to re-confirm arrangements, ask for any last-minute details they require and make any final payments. The groom should get a hair-cut. 2–3 DAYS Double check that the wedding dress is crinkle-free; if not, organise a last-minute press. Drop off the place cards, table numbers, menus, decorations and bonbonnieres to the person responsible for the wedding/ ceremony venue set-ups. Have any fake tan and manicure/pedicure appointments.

DAY BEFORE Do a dress rehearsal with the wedding party to ensure everyone knows what to do, where to stand and when to walk. Usually the table settings are done in the afternoon; double check these once complete and make any last-minute suggestions to the decorator. If there is time, book in a relaxing massage for the late afternoon or early evening. NIGHT BEFORE Aim for a relaxing evening with key loved ones. Also ensure you are in bed early and don’t drink too much, so you are well rested for the wedding day. Give a small memento to the wedding party members the night before, as a thank-you for their support. For bridesmaids, often this is some jewellery to wear at the wedding. Give wedding bands to the best man and maid of honour to hold during the ceremony. WEDDING DAY You are well organised and the key people have been nominated as responsible for particular tasks/areas on the day – so now it is time to simply relax and enjoy the day yourself. AFTER THE HONEYMOON Write and send thank-you notes to guests and helpful vendors. bride and groom // 11

‘‘Our outdoor area is fantastic for canapes while the newlyweds are off for their photo shoot,’’ Mrs Simpson said. ‘‘It really is quite a nice spot. With the facilities we have, along with the accommodation at the resort, we have everything covered at the golf club. ‘‘We have had a few weddings on the golf course, with the reception held at the club house. ‘‘We try to work to achieve what the couple wants and we can be quite flexible in meeting those needs. ‘‘We can provide our furnishings, or couples are welcome to hire their own and use them outside or in our functions room. ‘‘The club is ideally suited to a family orientated wedding, with plenty of room for

the children to run around both inside and outside.’’ When catering for your guests, speak to club manager Norm Purtill about bar packages. The club’s own chef can cater weddings from the newly renovated kitchen. You can choose from silver service, hot and cold buffet, or a more relaxed barbecue on the lawns. ‘‘We also strive to be competitive and realistic with our prices, but of course the cost will be dependent on the size of the wedding,’’ Mrs Simpson said. ‘‘The more notice we have to book the venue for your special day the better. ‘‘To guarantee that you get your desired date, it’s best to book in quite early.’’

The pair chose to be married on private property, owned by friends and located right on the picturesque Edward River at Deniliquin. ‘‘A formal wedding just wasn’t our thing,’’ Annie said. ‘‘We opted for a cocktail reception with mismatched chairs, hay bale seating, festoon lighting and native flowers.’’ The bride walked down the aisle in a dress

made of ivory, French Chantilly lace with a nude silk lining, fitted to her silhouette. She carried combination of king proteas, native greenery and baby’s breath, working perfectly into their natural and relaxed theme. ‘‘I was surprisingly relaxed, but starting the day with mimosas always helps,’’ Annie said. ‘‘It was perfect; I married the man of my dreams and I wouldn’t have changed a thing.’’

Twelve months of planning went into the wedding, and Annie said focusing on the ‘‘big things’’ first made all the difference. ‘‘Organise the photographer/videographer, music, venue, catering, dress, suits and celebrant first. ‘‘All the little things will fall into place, so have fun and enjoy the process and don’t let it stress you out.’’

YOUR CHOICE OF CEREMONY LOCATION: These days most couples want to get married outside. These locations provide some stunning photo opportunities and can really enhance the atmosphere of the wedding, however there are some factors that should be considered if you are wanting an outside wedding.

The weather - Extreme temperatures, high winds and current fire danger should all be monitored in the week/s before the wedding and an alternative venue should be organised should the weather conditions present a risk to the wedding party and guests. Terrain - please consider your elderly or disabled guests and choose a location that they can get to and from without risk. Facilities - consider whether there are toilet facilities accessible to the location, if there is any shade and please provide water for guests should the weather be warm. Privacy - the local town beach may be your favourite spot for your wedding, but if it is a public place you have no control over who else will be there at the time of your ceremony.
