T

hrough the ages, there has been nothing quite like the moment when a bride’s and groom’s eyes meet for the first time on their wedding day.

This is a common sentiment in the bridal submissions that reach my desk, and for me, far from clich́e. I still cherish that long-awaited moment from my own wedding day after a six-year courtship. Coincidently it was my 20th wedding anniversary on the same day of print deadline for this issue of Bride & Groom. Reading the many submissions and seeing a myriad of images during the planning and production phases of this magazine has been an apt reminder of the excitement weddings bring. All these unique weddings also reminded me of the effort that goes into wedding planning. While we had a perfect day, I look back and wonder why I did not delegate jobs and spread the workload. I could have saved myself needless pressure. Brides-to-be, take heed! It’s okay to accept offers of help and your family and friends will be delighted if you ask them to do a job. There is plenty of inspiration in this issue to plan your dream wedding — from intimate to traditional and personalised occasions. You’ll find stunning dresses, colour and theming ideas and advice on how to choose a photographer to capture the essence of your day forever, plus so much more. And remember, while we all love the beautiful trimmings of a wedding, it is the promise of a future together through thick and thin that is the enduring significance. Twenty years ago I married my best friend — and he remains so today.

The entire day was memorable, both our families and friends came together to help celebrate our love for one another on our wedding day. But most memorable of all was having our two gorgeous little boys Seth, 5, and Sage, 10 months, be a part of our special day. Watching Seth pull Sage along in a little trailer cart was very cute, most of our guests had tears in their eyes when they walked down the aisle. It was a very special and memorable moment.

We also had the ceremony at Joel’s parents house which is special too. They had done it up so nicely and it was lovely to have it there. We also had a butterfly release which was beautiful and a bit different too.

November 16, 2013

Our whole day was without doubt the most capturing, overwhelming, best and memorable day of our lives. The feeling when walking down the aisle with my dad beside me wiping his tears and seeing Josh for the first time with his big smile was truly amazing and indescribable. Being able to share our special day with family and friends was incredible. Seeing all our plans coming together was more than we could have ever expected. Yarrawonga-Mulwala has been a holiday destination since we were both young. Every time we cross the main bridge we are instantly in holiday mood. Our one dream was to stop traffic on this bridge and take a bridal party shot. With the help of our photographer and drivers we were able to block traffic on this bridge and have our photo taken. We have made that dream come true and now we have a very special memory every time we cross that bridge.

J

ust as every wedding is unique, what each couple wants from the photographer differs too. You need to decide how important the photography is to you and what style you want — such as natural or more stylised.

Shepparton photographer Liz Arcus said you needed to do your research and choose someone you feel you can trust and who has the experience, skill and equipment to capture the photographs you want, no matter what happens on the day. You may like to consider booking an accredited Australian Institute of Professional Photographers member who must be approved and meet high standards, including having insurance. With input from fellow professional photographers worldwide, Liz has some key tips couples can follow to build that trust. RESEARCH: You can see photographers’ work in magazines, friends’ photographs or online, but be sure to ask photographers if all the photos they have on their website are their own. MEET: When you find a photographer you like, meet them face-to-face to look at their work and ensure you like them because you will be working closely with them on what can be a busy, stressful and emotional day. Some people might consider whether they want a male or female photographer. EXPERIENCE: Ask how many weddings they have shot and how many years’ experience they have to give you the confidence that they not only have the

Wedding day tips TIME: Look to the photographer for advice for timing on the wedding day, including leaving enough time for hair and make-up and any holdups. LOCATIONS: Let the photographer know in advance if there are any particular places where you would like to have photographs taken. Will the bride and bridesmaids need flat shoes to get to this location? BEAUTY: You do not need heavy make-up to look good in wedding photos and Liz suggests having a hair and make-up trial and picking a style that is not too dissimilar to how you usually look to ensure you feel confident and look like yourself in photographs. SOCIAL MEDIA: Consider requesting all guests put down their cameras, phones and tablets during the ceremony and be truly present. Guests can be distracted by devices, the couple may not be able to see guests’ faces and it is difficult for the photographer to get photos of the guests.

photographic skills but can also deal with different weather, surprises and time constraints. CONSISTENCY: Ask to see a selection of weddings they have photographed to see their quality is consistent. PRICES: Depending on experience, skill, equipment and what is included in the package, wedding photographers can charge nothing (for example, photography enthusiasts or students) to $10 000. When discussing budgets, ask the photographer what parts of the day they will attend (most leave before the reception), what products they offer and whether they charge a travel fee. Remember the wedding day makes up a small amount of the time a photographer spends on your event, with post production taking many more hours. BACK-UP: Ask the photographer whether they have back-up equipment. Booking: Book as soon as possible so you do not miss out on the photographer you want. Popular wedding photographers can be booked out 12 to 18 months ahead, especially for the busy periods of March/April and October/November. PRE-WEDDING SESSIONS: A ‘couple session’ before you have chosen a photographer can help you decide whether you like their photography and working with them. Once you have chosen a photographer, couples may like to consider a pre-wedding session for photos they could use for the invitations or guest book, or present for parents. n

Mike had pre arranged with Eureka Tower in Melbourne to propose on their Sky Deck. The evening began with a romantic carriage ride around the city and the proposal in front of loads of onlookers on the Sky Deck. One of the staff walked in with a big bunch of flowers with the rings hidden in them and Mike got down on his knee. I think seeing Mike’s warm smile was the highlight walking down the aisle. He was beaming. I also loved seeing the faces of all our friends and family.

The venue was amazing, it created the whole atmosphere and we were thrilled with how amazing our photos came out. It was wonderful to have so many people travel to join us on the day. Particularly those that made the trip from New Zealand. The day was magic.

Wedding guests capture Sarah Powles’ entrance at her garden wedding in February. See more photos on page 76.

Instant turn-off, For generations, couples have found the love of their lives and made a seemingly endless list of choices to create their perfect day. Now couples have another decision to make: to encourage or discourage smart phones and social media at their wedding.

T

o ban or not to ban, that is the question Bride & Groom asked two Goulburn Valley marriage celebrants. Jennifer Broadbent said in the past 12 months, couples had started asking her to instruct guests to refrain from taking and posting photos on social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram, particularly before they had an opportunity to share their exciting news and their own photos — especially, Emma Davey added, if the newlyweds were heading away on their honeymoon. Another concern is whether people tapping away detracts from the couple’s and guests’ enjoyment of the day. “My biggest concern is when the music starts, instead of looking at the bride coming down the aisle, people are leaning over with their arms outstretched holding a mobile phone or tablets,” Jennifer said. “I wonder what is it that the bride sees — instead of the faces of her and the groom’s close family and friends, she sees a sea of screens.” Another popular photo opportunity is the certificate signing, which Jennifer said could hold up proceedings if there were a lot of guests trying to get the perfect snap. Both celebrants follow the couple’s lead, whether they want to discourage the use of digital technologies or encourage it, such as by setting up Instagram accounts or Facebook pages on which people can post photos. The celebrant, MC or signs at the venue’s entrance can let guests know the couple’s preference. “Family and friends do like to have their own photos to remember the day by — I think as long as we all follow the wishes of the couple, and this is made clear to the guests before the day begins, it makes for a perfect day for the newlyweds,” Emma said. Jennifer said the modern etiquette dilemma was a sign of the times: “I’m waiting for the day I can say to the couple, ‘You can now change your Facebook relationship status,’ and they’ll get their phones out of their pockets!” n

Chrystal White and Paul Baker

March 8, 2014

Walking into our wedding reception was one of many highlights for both of us. It was a thrill to be welcomed by our MC as Mr and Mrs Baker! As we entered the conservatory garden the band starting playing our favourite party song. All our guests were standing out of their seats clapping and cheering, just seeing and feeling their excitement really set the mood for the fun celebrations ahead. As we sat down we captured the first glimpse of the conservatory garden all set up, it looked magical. I had worked closely with the venue co-ordinator and suppliers as well as bringing some of my own things into the venue to create a classic and enchanting scene. To see it all come together just as I had imagined was amazing.

Another one of our memorable moments was our two-year-old son Cooper being our pageboy. He walked our rings down the aisle on a pillow embroided and made by Paul’s mother — it truly is a gorgeous pillow.

Our wedding favour was a white fluted-glass cupcake jar with a cupcake inside and a ribbon around the outside with each guest’s name on it. These were on the tables when guests arrived as they were dessert as well as a place card.

Will you When Tatura’s Christian Barnett decided to pop the question to longtime girlfriend Brooke MacGibbon he knew it needed to be special, so he had the moment captured on camera during a photo session. The couple will marry at Tindarra Resort in November this year.

Christian For some time I had been trying to get Brooke to do some couple photos, I had been bugging her about it for a few months. My plan was to have the photos done with a few props like hay bales and boots, and I had pre-organised all this. Brooke loves her dog, so we had him in a couple of photos too. I asked a good friend of ours, Carla Gilbert, to do the photos months earlier, before Christmas. It didn’t come to fruition then because I didn’t have the ring; I had to get it made and I had to keep waiting, so I had to draw it out. When the right diamond finally arrived, I organised the day. I wanted to try to capture the moment, to do something a little bit different. I put a canvas that said ‘Today we got engaged’ in front of the hay bale and she had no idea, Carla had her distracted as I had it all sitting there. You can see in the photos that she genuinely didn’t know what was going on, she is surprised and then obviously happy. I don’t think Brooke was expecting how I would propose, but if I took her out for a really nice dinner, I think she would have picked up on what I was trying to do. I was very nervous on the day. I did the traditional thing and asked her father for her hand in marriage. In the photos you can actually see Brooke’s reaction when she sees the sign — it’s a bit of a story. 38 BRIDE & GROOM

Interviews: Rhiannon Gavalakis Photography: Carla Gilbert

Brooke Christian wanted to have some photos taken of us together and of my dog. He had been talking about it since before Christmas, so I assumed it was something he wanted to have done to have photos on the wall. We had them taken at my parents’ property in Shepparton. I complained a bit on the day because it was 40 degrees. We were doing a few photos and he said he was going to get some more props — including the toolbox. I wondered why he wanted that in the photos, but I wasn’t surprised because he is very rustic. When I saw the canvas I looked around — Mum and Dad were watching, and he got down on one knee. I was sort of in shock, we had dated for nearly eight years and we had spoken about getting engaged, but he didn’t really want to talk about it. The thought crossed my mind that he might propose at the photo shoot and a friend of mine even brought it up the night before, but I said I didn’t think so. I looked at Carla afterwards, she laughed and said she knew what was happening and had helped Christian with the canvas. I was definitely impressed with the effort he went to, I couldn’t have asked for anything more. n

We were out for dinner celebrating the news of my new job offer when Micka got down on one knee and proposed, making the night super special for me. It’s true that the day goes so quickly, so relax and enjoy every moment. Everything falls together perfectly on the day.

Micka chucked me over his shoulder and carried me into our reception dancing when we first were introduced as Mr and Mrs Coad. It was a bit of a laugh and a funny way to enter into our reception.

becomes a reality A favourite film from the bride’s childhood sets the scene for a kitchen tea wonderland

A

different spin on the pre-wedding kitchen tea saw guests invited to “tumble down the rabbit hole” for Danielle Kalafatis’ (née Nedy) Mad Hatter high tea. Danielle’s experience co-ordinating fashion shoots helped her, her maid of honour Kelly Sgroi and mother Helen Nedy create a fantastical pre-wedding celebration that realised Danielle’s dream that she first had as a little girl who loved Disney’s animated film Alice in Wonderland.

About 70 women drank tea from family members’ Royal Albert tea sets and each table was decorated with white linen and varied teapots filled with colourful roses. Napkins were folded into bunny ears and cake stands brimmed with sweet and savoury petit fours, including some made by Danielle’s grandmothers Menka Nedy and Melpomeni Valcanis. Bright pink lanterns were hung from the ceiling and a pink peacock chair was hired so Danielle would stand out like the Mad Hatter, but in a more feminine way. One of the celebration’s highlights was playing games with close family and friends including card house-making competitions, toilet paper wedding dress, pass the parcel and a quiz on how well Danielle knew her fiancé Cossie Kalafatis. The women also brought recipes for Danielle’s cookbook collection and wrote a sentence or a story about her. “It was a beautiful celebration that, like the wedding, went too fast,” Danielle said. n

in wedding ceremony

I

ndian born Ratnamani Mandalika married Australian Martin Gleeson earlier this year in a beautiful ceremony that combined both their cultures. “Cultures may be different, but the vows are the same across the globe,” Ratnamani said.

“What we felt for each other is what led me to this country, and nothing mattered more than us being together.” The commitment to spend their life together meant intricately weaving Indian customs and clothing into a western-style wedding and reception at Mitchelton Winery on January 10. On the eve of the wedding the women made rangoli, an ancient ceremonial tradition which brings good luck. The beautiful decorations were placed at the entrance of the reception hall and on the wedding deck, to welcome good spirits. “Martin and I planned the whole wedding trying to bring both the cultures together, and also add our touch to it — I think it worked out beautifully. “From the Indian rangoli to the Australian band, everything complemented to make a perfect picture, even the dinner menu.” Ratnamani said having the mangalsutra (a chain of black beads and two round gold pendants worn by married women in India) tied, was a defining moment. The couple was surrounded by love on the day, including Ratnamani’s family who travelled from India for the wedding. “I was happy to have my loved ones there, the day was made extra-special by the people around me. “I did become emotional when the pictures of me with my parents were taken. I guess it started sinking in that I would not be seeing them as often as I used to back in India.” A special video message from her sister in Canada, who could not attend the wedding, was a touching moment. Ratnamani’s advice to other brides-to-be is to soak up all the enjoyment the day has to offer. “It is your day, enjoy it — it will be the most beautiful day of your life.” A few quiet moments walking through the winery after the ceremony, sharing the joy of being husband and wife, is her most cherished memory of the day. n

make-up tips

MAKE-UP ARTIST JACCI BENNETT FROM GLOSS HAIR AND BEAUTY BOUTIQUE SHARES HER EXPERT ADVICE WITH BRIDE AND GROOM FOR WEDDING DAY PERFECTION. Stay natural Stick with a make-up look that is similar to what you would normally wear, so you still look like yourself when you walk down the aisle. It is good to keep an eye on current make-up trends for inspiration, but stay true to your style. For make-up that will last the day, ensure your artist applies a good quality primer to your skin.

Make-up trial The make-up trial is important so on the actual wedding day it is all stress-free and you know the look you end up with is what you want. It will also help you get familiar with your make-up artist, so you feel comfortable expressing what look you want to achieve. The trial should be done at least a month before the wedding date, so if you need to have a second trial, there is enough time. If you are considering false lashes on the day, be sure to give them a go at the trial to ensure you can wear them comfortably. Price: About $50.

Wedding day Make-up application will take about 45 minutes to an hour on the day, so be sure to arrive on time to get the day off to a great start. Arrive to your appointment with clean skin that is make-up free for the best result, as removing make-up will take time. Wear a buttoned shirt or a style that is easy to get out of to ensure you don’t ruin your make-up when you get changed. Price: About $65, plus $10 for temporary lash application.

Touch-ups There are two key products to invest in before the big day: the powder and lip colour your make-up artist is using to create your look. It is a long day and having these products on hand will allow you to make any necessary touch-ups to keep your look fresh. If you are likely to be exposed to the sun, remember sunscreen; once your skin is burnt it is hard to get make-up to look even. BRIDE & GROOM 59

followed by big celebration

KATHRYN WHYTE AND OLIVER KEMP HAD THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS BY CELEBRATING THEIR WEDDING DAY NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE. THE FIRST WAS AN INTIMATE CEREMONY ON JANUARY 3 IN THE NORTH-EAST TROPICS OF QUEENSLAND, IN THE BEAUTIFUL DAINTREE RAINFOREST, WITH THEIR CLOSEST FRIENDS AND FAMILY. >>>

Photography: (This page) Photography with Prue

“The very first holiday we went on as a couple was to a really beautiful independent lodge in the Daintree Rainforest, it was stunning and it was very special to us,” Kathryn said. “When we got engaged we booked that same lodge for our wedding the very next week.” However, when the couple spoke with their wedding planner, they were told the lodge only catered for up to 30 guests to keep with its philosophy of maintaining a tranquil environment. “I come from an extensive Italian family and we have a huge group of family and friends in Shepparton, so that is where the idea of throwing a second celebration came in.” The first ceremony was a romantic affair with an acoustic guitarist. “It was a really intimate and a stunning atmosphere, we had one long table and it had white flowers in the centre,” Kathryn said. “The actual reception room had no walls. It overlooked a waterfall, a billabong and a rainforest and there were candles down the centre that lit the room.” Oliver said the most memorable part of the day was when he saw Kathryn walk down the river bank towards him. “It was a very special place to us given that we had been to the Daintree Forest right at the start of our relationship — it was where we fell in love.” Oliver’s parents and two best friends from England flew in to attend, which made the day even more special. Two weeks after their tropical wedding they were in Shepparton to celebrate all over again on January 18. A commitment ceremony was held at St Brendan’s, where the couple stated their love for each other in front of their Shepparton family and friends. Afterwards a grand affair with lots of dancing was held at The Parklake in Shepparton for 90 guests. “The atmosphere was very different the second time around, the whole room was on their feet dancing,” Kathryn said. The couple will honeymoon in Fiji. n

in wedding photos ENCHANTING TRICK HORSE SINATRA ADDED A TOUCH OF FAIRYTALE MAGIC TO WHAT WAS ALREADY A SPECIAL DAY FOR AMY MCGENNISKIN AND NICK HAYES.

A

fter Amy found the perfect white dress, the Rochester couple found the perfect white horse to include in its November 29, 2013 wedding at the Aquatic Reserve lagoon in Echuca. “We wanted to do something a bit different for our photos and we thought that would be perfect,” Amy said. “It had a real impact, I have some photos up at home and there is one of Sinatra rearing up — it is something really unique.” A cocktail reception was held for 220 guests at Radcliffe’s after the ceremony. “It was a very relaxed day, we didn’t have a formal sit-down reception, because with that amount of people it was too hard to do seating arrangements,” she said. “We had a lot of guests commenting on how amazing it was to have this beautiful white horse there as I was walked down the river bank to meet Nick, it really added that wow-factor for the day.”

Amy said the guests were surprised and delighted by the trick horse named Sinatra, who even stole a little bit of the spotlight. “All of my relatives wanted me to send them photos with the horse, that was the only thing they wanted to see,” she said with a laugh. Nanneella horse trainer Steve Cox said the idea to train a horse for weddings just came to him one day, and upon searching the market he found there was nothing similar out there. “It’s a unique photo opportunity for the brides that isn’t available elsewhere,” he said. It took Steve more than a year to find the right horse with the temperament required for such a venture, and he looked at 100 different horses. But when he saw the captivating Cremello gelding, he knew he had found ‘the one’. “He has a lot of charisma, when you put the camera up he stands up tall, he loves getting his photo taken,” Steve said. “With his big blue eyes I had to name him Sinatra, and his name at home is, of course, Frank.” n

Steve proposed in the orchard amongst the peach trees while walking our puppy Charlie.

Our bonbonniére was peach jam made by Steve’s mum using the peaches from the orchard. Peach branch cuttings were also used as centrepieces from the farm to incorporate our lives on the orchard.

The whole wedding day was amazing, from getting ready and then arriving at the venue. Walking down the aisle was very emotional; to have all of our family and friends there to wish us well was fantastic.

Sarah Powles and Trent Freer

February 15, 2014

We had our first child when we were very young and she had Powles as her last name. Since then we have had another child, so in our wedding ceremony we included a naming day for both of our children and changed our daughter’s last name too, so we all became Freers at the same time. This made it special for our children and meant that all our family and friends could be there to share in both celebrations. Trent was waiting for both children to be awake and present before proposing, so in the middle of watching Home and Away he paused the TV and got down on one knee to ask the special question. Jorja (daughter) had been holding onto the ring for a few days so she began to cry before Trent even got the words out! It was a beautiful moment and memory for all of us.

Story: Rhiannon Gavalakis

Choosing your bridal party can be a lot of fun, but it can also be one of the most stressful parts of planning a wedding. If you have a large family or circle of friends you wish to include and can’t choose between them, why not have a big bridal party? Here are some points to consider when choosing those who will be by your side on your special day.

Be realistic The more the merrier, but be realistic when it comes to getting everyone in the same place at once. You might need to do some extra planning when it comes to dress fittings and other pre-wedding get-togethers, because with more people involved it might be harder to co-ordinate everyone’s schedules.

The dresses It is your special day, but be considerate when it comes to choosing your bridesmaids’ dresses and the groomsmen’s suits. With more people in the bridal party there is likely to be a greater variance in shapes and sizes.

Transport Remember to organise enough seats for your bridal party to get to and from the venue for the ceremony and reception. A chaperone is a great way to ensure everyone arrives on time and it is also a way to include more loved ones in the wedding day.

Helping hand A great advantage of having a big bridal party is there are more hands on deck to help out with the wedding. Don’t be afraid to delegate roles, as your trusted loved ones will be more than happy to help and it will mean less stress for you. n

The Proposal . . . Will You Marry Me?

Proposing with a loose diamond has become quite popular with a lot of men at Blizzards Jewellers as they want to get the special event just right! Most girls give hints about the rings they like and don’t like, but it still can be a daunting task to choose an engagement ring on their own. Problem solved. Blizzards can supply or import your special diamond that will suit your budget in the shape of her dreams, presented in a clear-front ring box, then together the couple can come into Blizzards, choose a style they like, or design their own ring to suit her diamond.

Blizzards handcrafted designs are exclusive to Blizzards. You won’t find these unique designs in any other store.
