When selecting suits for our wedding, the team at Mensland Shepparton went above and beyond to ensure that we got exactly what we wanted; and their prices were more than reasonable. Glenn Busk, Suit Hire Manager, was exceptional to work with. His dedication, professionalism, sense of style and caring, supportive attitude made the whole process of selection stress free and enjoyable. Mensland Shepparton not only had a fantastic team to work with, but an vast selection of suits and accessories to choose from. Just how do you get in and out of a Mini-Minor in a wedding dress? Or transform a packing shed that houses pallets and forklifts into a spectacular setting for your reception? And imagine getting married in a secret garden nurtured by your parents for 20 years especially for the occasion. Once again, the Bride and Groom team was spoilt for choice when planning this issue with these stories and images of so many other beautiful weddings. We are constantly surprised by the ingenuity of couples to plan their big day in a way that reflects their personalities and backgrounds. In this issue, we feature weddings where no stone was left unturned and others where couples opted to keep things simple. www.facebook.com/ gvbrideandgroom Bridal submissions: Visit www.mmg.com.au/ bride-and-groom and click on the bridal submissions link in the right-hand column or email corinna.boldiston@ sheppnews.com.au for details

From the grand occasions to the smaller, intimate affairs, the love and joy of newlyweds and their guests is a common thread we feel privileged to share. There are so many ways — whatever your budget — to personalise your wedding, and there is a myriad of inspiration from real weddings in this issue to help you with your planning, whether you employ the expertise of local businesses, are a DIY bride or have talented family and friends willing to help create your perfect day. Our Goulburn and Murray valley brides often advise brides-to-be to relax and enjoy every moment of their wedding day because it goes so fast. Jaime Hooper (pictured on page 84) also elaborates: “Everything falls into place on the day. And if things don’t go according to plan, just laugh it off.” Happy planning, and I look forward to receiving your bridal submission for consideration in a future issue.

Cassie Heron and Declan Heyes The whole day was very memorable but having all of our family and friends — who live throughout Australia and the world — in the one place was so special. It was great that they all made the effort to come and Declan’s cousin, Jo, even travelled all the way from London for our big day.

April 5, 2014

Our wedding was short, sweet, simple and to the point. We have been together for a long time so we didn’t feel the need for a big hoo-ha. We just wanted a fun occasion for everyone to help us celebrate.

Elizabeth McBrearty and Adrian Vecchio

March 15, 2014

We have been lucky enough to do a lot of travel together so our theme was a vintage travel-inspired wedding. We had lots of small personal details like luggage tags as wedding favours for our guests and a ‘passport’ for all our friends and family to sign.

The wedding proposal took place while we were travelling in beautiful countryside near Bordeaux in France. We had stayed in an amazing chateau for the night and with the sun shining, Adrian proposed as we strolled through the vineyards.

We surprised everyone with a choreographed swing dance as our bridal dance. It had so much energy and it was so much fun to perform in front of all our family and friends, which made it the most memorable part of the day.

BRIDE & GROOM 17

18 BRIDE & GROOM

I changed into a short reception dress for our swing dance. I loved my long wedding dress but the short dress matched the theme and high energy of the dance and it meant I could dance the night away carefree.

Story: Sharon Wright Photography: Love Katie + Sarah

Packing shed transformed FROM THE TIME GUESTS FIRST RECEIVED THEIR INVITATIONS TO RENEE CIAVARELLA AND DAVE QUINN’S APRIL 12 WEDDING THEY KNEW THE CELEBRATION WOULD BE UNIQUE.

26 BRIDE & GROOM

Renee and Dave’s quirky, colourful card-style invitations featured the usual information — day, date and ceremony venue — but it was the site for the reception that was a little out of the ordinary: Varapodio Orchards’ packing shed at Ardmona. Usually home to semi-trailers and forklifts, the enormous steel and concrete structure was transformed into an intimate venue with walls built from fruit bins, festoon lighting, breathtaking floral displays and sumptuous food. The couple had several reasons for choosing the venue; for Renee it was family because her mother was a Varapodio and for Dave it was the opportunity to have a party-like atmosphere without the restriction of a curfew imposed by formal venues. As a musician Dave had performed at numerous weddings and seen first-hand how quickly time could fly on the day. “There are so many formalities which must be carried out but we had guests who had travelled long distances so we wanted to be able to kick-on and celebrate with everyone,” Dave said. The couple engaged The Style Co from Melbourne to turn their vision into reality. “Mum and I had a lot of input into the decorating. When we mentioned country the stylists got all excited about hay bales and wine barrels but that wasn’t what we were about,” Renee said. >>> 28

BRIDE & GROOM 27

<<< 27 It took three days to transform the packing shed for the occasion, complete with raised lounge area, cocktail bar and buffet servery. Taking pride of place were two potted 50-year-old pear trees, recently removed from Renee’s parents’ property. Continuing the orchard-inspired theme, the couple had pre-reception photos taken in front of Shepparton’s iconic SPC factory. Displays of Italian produce and orchard fruits paid homage to Renee’s ancestry and harmonised perfectly with glorious floral decorations. “When we told people about the packing shed, they were polite but I don’t think anyone could understand my vision. How it turned out was phenomenal, it exceeded all my expectations,” Renee said. Food is an important element of celebrations in Italian culture so the couple opted for a self-serve antipasto bar, which was later cleared to become a dessert bar, and shared platters of food on the tables for the main meal. “Food, drink and family is the Italian way so we were determined to look after our guests, feed them well and make sure they had a great time,” Dave said. Music too was essential. Dave organised the band and contributed two songs, one a parody which formed part of his groom’s speech and another for Renee and her father to dance to. The reaction to the “packing shed wedding” was overwhelmingly positive. “People everywhere have been talking about it and sharing our photos on social media. We’re really happy to share it with people, we’re glad they enjoy it,” Renee said. And true to their word the newlyweds made the most of their celebration. They were the last to leave . . . at 2.30 am. n 28 BRIDE & GROOM

Diana Mercuri and Brendan Spittles Be organised and always have a plan B. Our ceremony was to be outdoors but because of rain the night before and that morning we had to move it indoors. Luckily our ceremony venue had a lakehouse (one of the reasons we chose the venue). If it does rain, don’t let it spoil your day. At the ceremony we let a silver balloon go to honour and remember our family members that couldn’t be with us to celebrate in person but were there in spirit. Followed by two white balloons symbolising the coming together of two families. On the day we had two flower girls (my cousin’s daughter and Brendan’s niece) and a pageboy (my nephew). We chose not to have a bridal party but a witness each of whom, through their offering of friendship, love and support shared an important part in our lives leading up to our wedding day. My witness was my sister Danielle (she was my rock leading up to the day) and Brendan’s was his friend Sam (who also happens to be my second cousin). Sam introduced us.

We had the best fun planning and executing our wedding. The most important things to us were the personal touches that made all the difference. All of the styling we did ourselves. We made our ceremony booklets, favours and other reception decor. Our guests left us messages in a photobooth made from old wooden doors. I couldn’t be more proud of how our day went, it was honestly the best day of my life.

A BEAUTIFUL ALBUM FILLED WITH MEMORABLE WEDDING DAY PHOTOS IS A TREASURED KEEPSAKE FOR COUPLES. TO ENSURE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER IS ON THE SAME PAGE, CONSIDER A PRE-WEDDING PHOTO SHOOT.

Make time for a Feeling comfortable with a photographer is important to ensure your wedding photos adequately reflect the special day; capturing the joy, celebration and fun. Gaining popularity with couples and photographers alike is the practice of prewedding photo shoots, relaxed sessions which allow both parties to become familiar with one another and determine the style of the desired images. Shepparton photographer Lisa Nardella is one of a growing number of professionals offering this service to clients. Most couples are happy to let photographers choose the location for the lowkey casual shoots which result in quality images suitable for use on save-thedate cards, invitations, guest books or wedding day decorations. “Photographers can spend up to 10 hours with the couple on the wedding day. We’re almost an extension of the bridal party so it’s important we all feel comfortable with one another,” Lisa said. “I started the pre-wedding ‘love sessions’ because there were some occasions I would only deal with the bride and the first time I met the groom was on the wedding day.” Lisa said some prospective grooms were reluctant to be involved initially but had given positive feedback after the shoot. From a photographer’s perspective the pre-wedding sessions determine how much direction the couple may need and how best to approach them on what can be a busy and stressful day.

Abby Bell and Rhys Conti Newly-engaged Shepparton couple Abby Bell and Rhys Conti had reservations about participating in their scheduled pre-wedding photo shoot. “We were really nervous; having professional photos taken is just not us. Rhys especially is even more camera-shy than I am,” Abby said. But photographer Lisa Nardella managed to put the couple at ease and captured some beautiful relaxed images as the sun set. “The session only took about half an hour. It was very low-key, we didn’t feel any pressure to pose or awkwardly hold hands,” Abby said. She said they were confident the emotion and excitement of their November wedding would be reflected in Lisa’s photos. “It was well worth it, now we’re really looking forward to having the photos taken on our wedding day.” 46 BRIDE & GROOM

Faye and David Matarese

Where good food is just the beginning

Images from Tatura’s Faye and David Matarese’s pre-wedding photo shoot played a prominent part at their wedding reception at Mitchelton Winery. The beautiful photos, taken by Lisa Nardella, were used on the bomboniere cards to thank guests and were enlarged onto canvas for display on the gift table. According to Faye the photo shoot was a valuable experience. “Having the photos taken prior to the wedding really helped break the ice. It also gave us the opportunity to have input to some of the photos we wanted taken on the day,” Faye said. “We were able to get used to the different requirements a photographer has and it gave us a great idea of what was needed, from us, on the wedding day. “It was a fantastic experience.” n

Will you Surprise proposal almost didn’t get off the ground A double date turned into a surprise helicopter ride and ended with a marriage proposal for Shepparton’s Samantha Zurcas. Bobby Gorcevski (who lives in Melbourne) flew Samantha to Melbourne after keeping his grand gesture a secret with lots of little white lies. The couple is hoping to set a date for some time next year. Bobby I asked my best mate and his wife (who also live in Melbourne) to pretend they had a wedding in Echuca months in advance so we could organise a “dinner” together in Shepparton. I thought it would be a good way to get Samantha dressed up without her getting suspicious. So I could organise the room at the Westin hotel (in Melbourne) on the Saturday, I had to get my usual soccer game in Melbourne off. I told Samantha I had to play the Friday night instead, and that night I had to pretend I was playing soccer and not talk to her until about 11 pm. I told her my soccer boots broke during the game and I needed to buy new boots on Saturday, so I wouldn’t be in Shepparton until later. When she called, I pretended I was having trouble finding my size and I had to go from one shop to another. Once in Shepparton, I told Samantha I had a flat tyre at the airport but our friends were just behind me so they were on their way to get her before getting me. This was when it could have been confusing and come unstuck, and it was overwhelming constantly telling little white lies — but luckily she didn’t catch on. When she arrived at the airport my heart was pounding. I let her stand there for a minute or two and when I walked out I saw she had her shoes in her hands, clearly not ready to go out for dinner. I told her we weren’t going out for dinner but we were going for a ride. When we finally got to the hotel balcony, I dropped to one knee and she said, “Yes of course,” before I even showed her the ring. 48 BRIDE & GROOM

Samantha Bobby’s best friend and his wife from Melbourne had organised the four of us to have dinner on a Saturday night. Bobby also lives in Melbourne and he called and said he wouldn’t be in Shepparton until late because he needed to buy new boots. To be honest I was a bit grumpy that day — but little did I know that he was busy preparing his grand gesture. I had only just woken up from a nap when he called and said he had a flat tyre and was stranded at the Shepparton airport, but his friends were coming to get me. They rushed me out the door and I kept saying: “It’s only 5.30 pm, dinner is ages away!” Now I’ve been told I was rushed because the helicopter had to leave at a certain time due to the sunset, and if I didn’t leave the house the helicopter wouldn’t have been able to fly. When we got to the airport I couldn’t see Bobby anywhere, but when he came out of the building he was in a suit and he was holding a red rose. That’s when things started to click — like when my favourite jeans disappeared (my mum sent them down to Melbourne with other items so I would have a spare change of clothes ready). I had no idea where we were going or what we would be doing but I was suspicious. I kept looking out for writing in the sky. We then landed at the South Wharf helicopter pad in Melbourne and a private car drove us to the hotel. As I walked up the stairs there were rose petals everywhere and a bottle of champagne and Bobby proposed on the balcony. He did so well in keeping the proposal a surprise — I’m a snoop!

while waiting for love to bloom A secret garden behind closed doors was destined to be the venue for Stephanie Weidenbach’s wedding.

In 1989, a private garden was built by Stephanie Weidenbach’s parents David and Julie and it continued to grow and blossom for 20 years. “We built this garden so our daughters could have the option of a wedding in their own garden,” David said during the reception. “It has been a journey for us and an oasis for our family.” Stephanie married American-born Jonathon Hare on March 29. “Nothing prepared me for how perfect the day was,” Stephanie said. Jonathon had proposed through a collection of letters, eight months prior. “I’ll take you back to the very beginning,” the first letter read. Connected with string, 55 letters wove through Stephanie’s parents’ Avonlea flower farm at Murchison. Stephanie opened the last letter at the exact spot where they would later exchange their wedding vows. The bride wore a dusty pink wedding gown. “There was an option of white, but when I tried on the pink dress that was that,” Stephanie said. “I’m a big pink girl.” One-hundred-and-seventy guests came and smelled the roses, including 11 from the United States who made the trip down-under especially for the wedding. Stephanie’s sisters Bonnie and Ashlee were bridesmaids and her twin Heidi was the maid of honour, and together they put their creativity to good use. “Flowers are a big expense for weddings but my sister Bonnie had just opened her own flower business and designed ours,” Stephanie said. “With four girls only five years apart, there was something for everyone to make or sew. We are a creative bunch.” 50 BRIDE & GROOM

With their venue and flower arrangements supplied, there was more budget for the little things that made the wedding experience unique for everyone. “With weddings there is a big gap between the ceremony and reception, so we had the guests walk through to the home’s pool area where there was a bar and an acoustic guitarist.” Guests were entertained by garden games such as totem tennis, croquet and the American game Cornhole. There were also Polaroid cameras available so guests could take photos and peg them onto string. A wooden bucket with fresh pairs of thongs gave ladies the option to “kick off their heels” on the unusually hot, 33°C spring day. Conveniently, the wedding programs were printed on rustic wooden fans. To represent Jonathon’s American roots, Friars Cafe provided a buffet of traditional Thanksgiving foods such as roast turkey, baked potatoes, corn-on-the-cob and Waldorf salad at the reception, held in a marquee from Goulburn Valley Party Hire. Guests just needed to make sure they left room for the buffet dessert. “Our cake was five different cakes — chocolate, vanilla, lemon, musk and raspberry white chocolate,” Stephanie said. From when the newlyweds said “I do” at 3 pm, the festivities lasted long into the night. “We just wanted to have a big party,” Stephanie said. “We ran a bus to and from Shepparton so people didn’t have to worry about driving.” n BRIDE & GROOM 51

Mini-Minors make A PROCESSION OF CLASSIC MINI-MINORS FERRIED STEPH AND CAM CRESSWELL TO ST AUGUSTINE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH IN SHEPPARTON FOR THEIR APRIL NUPTIALS.

Horse-drawn carriages, stretch limousines and even helicopters have been the mode of transport for brides wishing to make a grand entrance. But for Shepparton’s Steph Watt there was only one choice for getting to the church on time for her April 12 marriage to Cam Cresswell. A convoy of seven classic Mini-Minors, resplendent with bridal ribbon and tulle, were an impressive sight travelling to St Augustine’s Anglican Church for the ceremony and then on to the Olivehouse Event and Function Venue at Kialla West, south of Shepparton, for the reception. Cam has always loved the quirky cars and owns many vehicles in varying states of repair. One of his main duties, as the groom, was spending weeks polishing and preparing the cars for the wedding. For Steph, it meant carefully choosing her wedding gown to ensure she was able to gracefully alight from the car. “The first dress I tried on had an enormous hoop and that just wasn’t going to be practical. As it was, my dress had the smallest skirt possible and I still had fabric all the way up to the window of the car,” Steph said. The couple, who met in secondary school, worked closely with their families to plan their dream day. “We were very lucky, we had so many people offer to help so we tried to include as many people as possible,” Cam said. Steph’s dad crafted the timber candleholders for the table centrepieces at the reception while her mum used beautiful fresh flowers to fashion the bouquets and floral displays. Cam’s uncle was the MC; Cam’s brother and Steph’s brother — both musicians — performed at the reception; and the couple’s three nephews and five nieces relished their roles as pageboys, flower girls and wedding helpers. 62 BRIDE & GROOM

A long-held interest in craft gave Steph the confidence to make the candles for the table centrepieces and quaint jars of jam — personalised with their names and marriage date — as wedding favours. She also sourced Mini-Minor chocolate moulds and spent the week leading up to the wedding making solid and filled chocolates which took pride of place on the lolly bar at the reception. Cam’s groomsmen are also Mini enthusiasts so were delighted to receive their thank-you gifts of model cars emblazoned with their names and encased in glass. “People commented to us afterwards that we had so much Cam and Steph in our wedding,” Steph said. The couple was grateful to the large bridal party which included Steph’s two sisters and Cam’s brother, who surprised them with a tropical north Queensland honeymoon. “We didn’t have a honeymoon organised, we were just going to get in the car and drive to the coast. Our bridal party planned and paid for the airfares and seven nights’ accommodation at Clifton Beach,” Cam said. “We were so grateful … they all stepped up and were a great help to both of us.” They are pleased too they insisted on having candid photos taken at the reception of themselves with their guests. “The day goes so quickly, it’s nice to be able to look back on the photos of the reception and who was there and the great time we had,” Steph said. n BRIDE & GROOM 63

Melanie Walker and Stephen Murray

March 2, 2013 We wanted an intimate and relaxed wedding with our family and friends who are most important to us.

Our family and friends all helped in the wedding preparations from painting fences at the farm, collecting wildflowers for the decorative jars to form the aisle, to lifting heavy tables up into a shearing shed, they were all there helping and laughing. My brother made our wishing well which is now our daughter’s doll toy box, while another friend made a wine barrel tabletop which all the guests signed on the night.

The RSVP to our wedding invitations included provision for each guest to pick a song for the reception playlist to ensure everyone was up dancing — a groomsman’s idea.

Doves select one mate for life. The signifance of the release of two doves for us was that it was the start of a new life together — full of love, peace and happiness. They say that seeing doves on your wedding day will bring the newlyweds everlasting love, a happy home and good fortune. I handmade a lot of things for the wedding — save-the-date cards, church booklets, name cards, photo booth props, bonbonniere (candles) and activity booklets with crayons for the little ones (great for keeping them occupied and quiet during speeches).

I did this mainly because I wanted to personalise the wedding. I wanted it to be modern but still traditional with a touch of my creativity. I also hired a photo booth that was in use throughout the night.

Five tips for wedding day

THE FINER DETAILS OF YOUR BIG DAY CAN BE JUST AS IMPORTANT IN CREATING THE LOOK YOU WANT AS FINDING THE PERFECT DRESS. HERE ARE FIVE PEARLS OF WEDDING DAY BEAUTY WISDOM TO ENSURE YOUR DAY GOES OFF WITHOUT A HITCH.

1.

The spring and summer seasons are popular times for tying the knot, particularly in whimsical outdoor garden ceremonies. However, with flowers in full bloom it can be a difficult time for hay fever sufferers. To avoid blotchy skin, itchy eyes, streaming noses and violent sneezing, speak to your general practitioner in advance and ensure you are prepared on the day with the necessary medication on hand if needed — but check it is a nondrowsy solution!

2.

If you want glowing sun-kissed skin on your big day but weren’t blessed with the bronzed complexion of Jennifer Lopez, then fake tan is your new best friend. Book an appointment with a reputable beauty salon two weeks before your big day to trial the colour. If you are happy with the result, book an appointment with the same consultant for two days before your wedding. Every salon is different — some tan formulas take eight hours to develop while others take as little as two — so ensure you ask for preparation and after-care tips for a terrific tan.

3.

Proper eyebrow shaping is key to a polished look, so get your eyebrows groomed by a professional. As with everything wedding related, preparation is paramount. Ask around to find a salon with a good reputation, and book an appointment to trial the result well in advance of the wedding. This is not the kind of thing to be left to the last minute, such as the day before the wedding, as you will risk red or bumpy-looking skin on your big day.

4.

Let’s face it, you wait your whole life for this one day, so you can bet there will be tears. Avoid black track marks by selecting waterproof mascara. If you are not a fan of this solution, you could also consider individually applied false lashes for added length, fullness and definition. However, beware this solution can cause damage to your natural lashes. Remember to have tissues on hand on the day but always dab — don’t wipe — as this may remove your base.

5.

Your wedding day fragrance should be special, so take the time to shop for a scent that will evoke the memories of your special day for years to come. Remember to trial it on your skin, because scents can smell different on the tester card, and to ensure you can wear it without a skin reaction. If possible choose a fragrance with a high concentration — such as an eau de parfum — because this will last longer throughout the day.

I was a very hands-on bride and a lot of things for the wedding were DIY. We also had so many people involved in doing different things for our wedding. We were married in a paddock on my husband’s uncle’s dairy farm and I arrived in my uncle’s Volkswagen Bug. My dad was the celebrant who married us. Our pastor did the beginning of the ceremony and halfway through they swapped and my dad did the rest of the ceremony. I also created a wedding app on a free wedding app website for the guests to download. Throughout the wedding the pictures taken with the app are seen in real time. The pics are all stored on a website that I have access to so now we can do whatever we would like with the pics. This was very useful because my best friend lives in Mexico and couldn’t come to our wedding so she just downloaded the app and watched the pics come up in real time.

78 BRIDE & GROOM

The chairs were for our grandparents. I got them from op shops and now they are our kitchen chairs. We had flowers lining the aisle at the ceremony. The holders are from electric fencing that my parents had and we hung the jars on.

I saw the table numbers online and decided I could make them. My cousin and I also did the flower arrangements for the centrepieces.

My mum and brother made the placecard holders out of red gum from our house and I made all the placecards. We made little flags to make it easy for special meal requirements for the caterers. One of the most memorable things was our sparkler exit. Everyone went outside and formed a guard of honour from the hall to our car with extra-long sparklers. It looked so beautiful against the dark night and we were so glad that we were able to capture that moment both on video and camera.

Favour your guests with a candy Lisa Nardella Photography

Modern bridal couples are turning to sweet treats for guests to take home as a keepsake of their special day. Offering small gifts to wedding guests is a time-honoured tradition and the new trend of candy bar buffets is allowing modern brides to add their own flair to the custom. Decorative containers filled with an assortment of colourful sweets provide an ornamental flourish to any wedding reception. Guests can fill lolly bags with their choice of sweets for a memento of the occasion.

Lisa Nardella Photography

The Candy Bowl proprietor Helen Mellino believes candy buffets are gaining in popularity as bridal couples endeavour to personalise their weddings and make them fun celebrations for all to enjoy. And while lollies of similar hues look great displayed together, it is old-fashioned sweets — snakes, licorice, jelly beans, sherbets and bananas — which are the most popular. “People love the lollies they grew up with,” Helen said. Buffet decorations can include balloons, candelabra, candles, birdcages, flowers and timber letters, set on elegant table linen with coloured ribbon to tie the theme together. Add some sparkle with crystal-encrusted lolly scoops and tongs and complete the display with take-home gift bags printed with the names of the bride and groom and the marriage date. The choice of sweets that can be offered is limited only by imagination. Some popular combinations include a selection of decadent chocolates, carnival lollypops teamed with bright, boiled lollies or chewy toffees contrasted with soft confectionery. n

Dave and I had a putt-off competition. Even though I won, he made me collect the balls because on one of them he had printed “Will you marry me?” I turned around and he was down on one knee with the ring in his hand. We organised fireworks to go off after speeches, provided by Mr Skye Candy in Kyabram. It was certainly something we will never forget.

We had a lot of family involvement in our wedding which was special. The cake was made by my aunty, our wedding cars belonged to my husband’s uncle and the pastor that married us was my husband’s cousin. My sister and I did our own hair and make-up, as well as the flower girls and bridesmaids’ hair, and all our musical items were done by family and friends. We just wanted as many people involved as possible to make it a real family affair. I also loved that my hubby wrote a song and sang it to me, which was a beautiful surprise.

My most memorable part of the day was definitely exchanging our vows — it was truly special. Here’s this amazing guy all scrubbed up standing right before me, telling me why he loves me and how he wants to share the rest of his life with me — it still gives me goosebumps. There are very few moments in life where you truly feel you’re exactly where you are supposed to be at that moment in time. This was one of those. Don’t forget to have fun along the way. It’s really easy to get caught up in the colours, the dresses and decorations. But remember marriage is a pretty amazing thing, when someone decides they want to share a life with you. So celebrate the little achievements together along the way, whether it’s paying for something, or making a decision. Weddings can be expensive but love, laughter and happiness is free.

Which side of the church/ceremony venue should wedding guests sit? Traditionally the bride’s guests are seated to the left and the groom’s on the right, with family occupying the front rows. Which order does the bridal party walk into the ceremony? There is a general pattern, but this can vary according to the couple’s religious beliefs, the size of the bridal party and the setting. For a church wedding, the general order is: • The priest, groom and groomsmen enter through a side door and wait at the altar. • Once the mother of the bride enters and is seated, it signals that the wedding procession is about to begin. • The bridesmaids walk down the aisle, in the order of who stands farthest to closest to the bride at the altar, ending with the maid of honour. • The flower girl and pageboy (sometimes the young ones walk in before the bridesmaids, but remember this could be quite daunting for some children). • The bride escorted by her father, or other close family member. The bride walks on the left of her escort. What are the bridesmaids’ duties? The main role of the bridesmaid/maid of honour is to support the bride — from choosing the perfect dress through to ensuring the wedding day runs smoothly. They should: • Attend wedding parties and dress fittings and help with accessories shopping as necessary. • Bridesmaids may also host or assist with organising the bridal shower (make sure you discuss who is paying for what). • Help DIY brides with tasks such as putting together invitations, wedding favours, running last-minute errands and other planning tasks. • Help the bride get ready and ensure she is relaxed and has eaten something on the wedding day. Have a ‘survival’ pack of tissues, bandaids, pins and other things to cater for any on-the-day emergencies. • Ensure the bridal couple and guests have a good time at the reception and help organise the storage of wedding presents. Who picks up the tab? Traditionally the bride’s family pays for the majority of wedding expenses, however couples are now often taking a more practical approach. The bill can be apportioned traditionally, equally between both families and the couple, according to what each family is willing and able to afford, or paid entirely by the bridal couple. Save any awkwardness and sort the budget out early. Be fair and realistic because all parties should be happy with their level of contribution. n BRIDE & GROOM 85

Proposing with a loose diamond has become quite popular with a lot of men at Blizzards Jewellers as they want to get the special event just right! Blizzards can supply or import your special diamond that will suit your budget in the shape of her dreams, presented in a clear-front ring box, then together the couple can come into Blizzards, choose a style they like, or design their own ring to suit her diamond.
