CROWNING GLORY Move over dainty tiaras; bold headpieces and statement barrettes are the on-trend brides’ hair accessories of choice. With relaxed hairstyles still reigning supreme, details of metal, stones or pearl are the perfect way to elevate a bridal look. While a headband or crown complements loose curls, barrettes boost a half-down hairdo.

Modern meets retro with neon signs. After reaching their peak in the 1940s and ’50s, Lauren Kiss from Light Hearted Signs said it was no surprise design had come full circle. “1940s glamour is really making a comeback in wedding style and design,” Lauren said. “Mood lighting and features like festoon lights and fairy lights have always been big for weddings — they create such an amazing atmosphere and I think this has led the neon sign revival.” From a welcome sign or a ceremony backdrop to pointing guests to the bar or lighting up the dance floor, neons can do anything a timber sign can do, but with an extra dose of fun. Whether it is custom-made to incorporate the couple’s names or a saying that resonates, neon lights add a vibrant and playful element to any event.

TEAM BRIDE As getting ready photos have become a wedding day staple, so too have matching bridesmaid dressing gowns. But a new option is gaining momentum. Pyjamas can be a more comfortable and wardrobe malfunction-free alternative. From button-up night shirts and rompers to a two-piece combo with pyjama shorts or pants there are loads of options. Dusting off their old-fashioned reputation, Nicole Henderson from Flowers on Melville said the everlasting florals were having a resurgence. “They are on trend in 2019 with a modern take,” Nicole said. “Part of the reason for the popularity is that you can definitely keep it.” With warm sun-bleached colours, this tactile trend lends itself to all wedding florals — from bouquets and boutonnieres to centrepieces and arbours — and can even be dyed or combined with fresh elements. Not only do dried flowers and foliage look good but they have a lot of advantages. No matter how hot it is, they will not wilt before the ceremony is over and the bouquet will keep its shape. The best things about dried flowers? They can be enjoyed long after you return from your honeymoon.

For the high school sweethearts, it was important their love was at the forefront of the celebrations. “We wanted the wedding to have a really personal feel, where our loved ones would walk away knowing it represented us perfectly as a couple,” Chloe said. “Our aim was to have people smiling and laughing throughout the night, so we asked our very funny brother-in-law to MC for us. We’re so glad we did, he had us in stitches.” Chloe and Kyle love spending time together (sounds like a great recipe for a marriage to us) and figured their wedding day shouldn’t be any different. With their hair and makeup dream team done and dusted by 2 pm, they met with the bridal party and their parents for a late lunch by Moama’s Gusto Grazing Platters over a glass of wine. After an emotionally charged first look to

the tune of Christina Rotondo’s cover of Pabst Blue Ribbon on Ice by The Amity Affliction, they got the bridal party and immediate family photos out of the way before saying ‘I do’ at 5 pm. Rather than leaving for photos between the ceremony and reception, the newlyweds were able to join the celebrations straight away. Instead they snuck out mid-reception for a sunset shoot plus a special moment to reflect on the day so far — and calm the nerves before the first dance. Ditching a few traditions like the bouquet and garter toss meant more time to spend with their loved ones. “It was incredibly important to keep our guest list small to give us time to hug every person in the room,” Chloe said. “We loved being able to drink and dance with our loved ones without interruptions. It was just like a big party to celebrate our love

and we felt so incredibly special for the whole weekend.” This modern take on tradition flowed through the styling from the classic black and white bridal party get-ups and stationery, and white and green blooms juxtaposed against a neon ‘The Fitzys’ sign above the dance floor. The personal details didn’t stop there, with a wishing well by Sketch & Etch with one of their favourite band’s lyrics, a trio of cakes topped with hand-painted cookies and flanked by photos of their parents’ cake cuttings, and a bonbonniere donation to a charity that combined their passions for basketball and teaching. And then they danced into the night surrounded by loved ones with a bottle of Brown Brothers wine in hand and smiles on their faces.

THE BUILD-UP TO NEW YEAR’S EVE OFTEN LEADS TO DISAPPOINTMENT, BUT NOT FOR ROSIE WILSON AND ANDREW LORIMER.

A New Year’s Eve meeting set the scene for a sparkling celebration, bringing in 2019 as husband and wife, surrounded by the ones they loved most. Five years earlier, just over the bridge from Yarrawonga’s House of Figs, after some encouragement, Andrew approached Rosie and the rest is history. The couple exchanged vows in a magical garden ceremony under the arbour that Andrew built, with a fitting pop of gold. “I always knew I didn’t really want a white dress and I thought gold would be perfect for New Year’s Eve,” Rosie said. But finding the ‘one’ was a difficult feat so she took to Airtasker to find a dressmaker.

Enter Arlene D’Amato, some sequined gold fabric and a few fittings later, Rosie had her dream dress. “I got super lucky, she was amazing and it turned out perfect.” She paired it with velvet green shoes to match the men’s pants and bridesmaids’ dresses and a simple yet bold gold headpiece. While Rosie let Andrew in on her nontraditional colour choice, she kept just how sparkly it was as a first look surprise. With photos out of the way before the ceremony, the duo was ready to get the party started with a cocktail reception. Two enormous fig trees formed the perfect backdrop with marquee lights overhead,

Aperol Spritz and Dark ‘N’ Stormy (his and hers favourite cocktails) flowed and Andrew’s party playlist got everyone on the dance floor. “We wanted it to be a fun party rather than a formal wedding,” Rosie said. “It was a lot of work to organise everything ourselves but we loved it; it turned out exactly how we wanted it and it was worth it in the end.” And as the clock reached midnight, the newlyweds and their guests gathered around with sparklers to count down to the new year.

LET’S DRINK TO THAT WHEN IT COMES TO GUESTS ENJOYING THEMSELVES, THE MOST IMPORTANT WEDDING PLANNING DECISION YOU’LL MAKE IS THE DRINKS.

It can seem like a dizzying whirlwind — open bar, limited bar, beer and wine versus hard liquor — the list goes on and on. A run-of-the-mill offering of beer and wine can keep stress levels at a minimum. But deviating from the whites, reds and browns can be lots of fun and make for a personalised experience for guests to remember years on from your special day. bride and groom spoke to Shane Pungitore from Cocktails 2 U about the dos and don’ts when it comes to putting together a list of mixed drinks. Shane identified Espresso Martinis, the ever-popular Mojito and timeless classic Old Fashioned, with Cosmopolitans and Pimm’s cups featuring among the most regularly ordered drinks. With endless possibilities and combinations 18 // bride and groom

available in today’s market, Shane suggested sticking with a succinct list of whistle-wetters to ease guests into the night. “If you are offering a list of cocktails, I would suggest going with four,” he said. “It is important to keep the drinks within the same range.” Offering a signature cocktail is the perfect way to put a personal stamp on the wedding, as well as being a great way to keep the costs down — but it’s important to weigh up whether it is a necessity or an accessory. And while mixed drinks look and taste great, they require a larger amount of preparation than beer and wine — which couples need to take into consideration. “The hosts need to think about organising the alcohol purchasing as well as equipment, glassware and the amount of bar staff they

will need,” Shane said. “For 100 people I would recommend three staff, and for every 50 people after that I would suggest another staff member to help.” However, when all factors were boiled down, Shane said the main ingredient to an entertaining evening was a properly mixed drink. “You are better off finding someone who knows what they are doing, because if the drinks are not mixed exactly right, it can be the difference between a great night and an average night.”

WITH THE BRIDE’S PARENTS UNABLE TO MAKE THE WEDDING, YAEL RUSIANA AND PHILIP HALL CHOSE TO MARRY IN AN INTIMATE GARDEN CEREMONY, OBSERVING LOTS OF TRADITIONS WHILE MAKING SOME OF THEIR OWN.

When the couple met in the Philippines in 2017 it didn’t take them long to realise they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. Philip observed the Filipino custom of pamamanhikan or ‘climbing for love’ by asking Yael’s parents for their blessing. After a month of planning, they were married in a low-key celebration. Deciding on a civil ceremony, the couple chose to marry in the garden at Hurlstone Homestead rather than in a civil space, to add some solemnity to the occasion. Yael jumped at the chance to wear Philip’s

grandmother’s wedding dress. “Grandma was so proud on that day,” Yael said. “She never thought that someone would wear it for the second time. “The girls in the family were all too short.” Just like Philip’s grandma Norma on her wedding day, Yael is 198 cm tall. The couple followed the tradition of something old (the wedding dress), something new (Yael’s sparkling shoes), something borrowed (jewellery and cars) and something blue (Philip’s suit and Yael’s flowers).

Maintaining the relaxed style, the pair got ready together at home, the bride doing her own hair and makeup and the groom helping fasten her dress, joined by their daughter acting as flower girl and ring-bearer. Yael arrived at the wedding in a classic blue 1948 Holden FX, but in a break from tradition Philip helped his bride-to-be from the car and walked her down the aisle. After a sunset ceremony, conducted by the same celebrant who had married Philip’s parents, they finished the day off with a family dinner.

NOWADAYS GETTING MARRIED IN CHURCH IS ALMOST A RARITY, BUT WHEN BRIDGETTE HALL AND ANTHONY HAYSOM WERE PLANNING THEIR WEDDING, NAGAMBIE’S ST MALACHY’S CHURCH WAS THE FITTING CHOICE.

It was the obvious venue for their spring ceremony, with three generations of Haysoms now married within its walls. And it just felt right that the couple should be married by Monsignor Peter Jeffrey — Bridgette’s family’s parish priest when he was at St Brendan’s in Shepparton. On the hunt for something simple, without beads or lace, the bride-to-be had a longsleeved wedding dress in mind. But after three trips to Melbourne searching, she fell in love with a contemporary off-theshoulder design. Finding dresses to suit both her bridesmaids also proved troublesome, but when they tried on a pale pink strapless jumpsuit in Kookai they knew it was ‘the one’.

“It was a bonus that they are something that they can wear again,” Bridgette said. When it came to the flowers, the motherof-the-groom and her friend got to work gathering blooms from all over town to decorate both venues — including creating toppers for a trio of cakes. “They spent all day before the wedding putting the flowers together and they decorated the church and the reception venue at Kirwans Bridge with flowers,” Bridgette said. Taking advantage of its picturesque Lake Nagambie views, the newlyweds returned home after the ceremony for photos with a meaningful backdrop and also slipped away from the reception between the speeches and

the main course for a sunset shoot. “We were also lucky enough to be able to take most of our wedding photos at home in our backyard,” Bridgette said. “We are really glad to have so many special photos from our wedding day taken at our home.” Bridgette and Anthony wanted their reception to be a relaxed night of dancing and fun with all the people they loved most. “It was really special to have my 91-yearold grandfather at our wedding. A special memory from the night is dancing with him after our bridal waltz,” she said. “Pa danced all night and said it was the best wedding he had ever been to.”

However, when it comes to tying the knot, the dress takes centre stage, meaning one aspect of the groom’s involvement can be glossed over among all that gown infatuation — the suit. And while it isn’t regarded as a wedding day maker-or-breaker, the right choice of attire for a groom can make a man stand out from the pack. bride and groom spoke to Paul Jerome from Talisman Menswear about what to look for when selecting a suit. “Ideally there needs to be good communication between the bride and groom,” Paul said. “It is really difficult when the bride isn’t here and you are going backwards and forwards, you lose a lot of information in the meantime. “I try and get the couple to come in roughly three months before the wedding so we can discuss what they want.”

When it comes to actually picking the threads, Paul suggests getting the fit right should be the main goal for the guys rather than getting festive with the pastels. “The key element is trying not to get something that is going to date too fast,” he said. “In terms of the bright and bold, for me, getting something that actually fits and looks good on the body is more important.” Paul said the same rule applied when choosing the groomsmen’s garb, advising the bridal party to elect a policy of comfort over chic. “If there is someone in the bridal party that is of a larger build, some of the skinnier fits don’t work so it’s about trying to find something that looks good on them and not like they have been dipped in paint,” he said. Paul noted the trend of navy suits had taken off over the past couple of years, but admitted

he was “going crazy” making bowties for grooms, with bridal parties tending to stray away from the longer tie option. However, away from the styling side of things, another factor to take into consideration is the debate of hiring versus buying. “When you are hiring there are limitations as to what you can alter, but when you are buying there is a lot more you can do,” Paul said. “It all is obviously at the customer’s expense, but if they want something specific, they can have it. “The one thing that Talisman does compared to everybody else is the in-store tailoring; if a customer needs his jacket run-in or taken up, or the sleeve altered, I can do all that here.”

Have an open mind! Wedding dresses are structured so differently to your everyday clothes, so don’t rule any style out.

Here are a few dress styles to consider: Ballgown: This is your princess dress. It has a fitted bodice and poufs at the waist with a dramatic full skirt. A-Line: A tamed-down version of the ballgown, the A-Line gown resembles the figure “A” (literally) because it is more fitted through the waist and gently gets fuller from the waist to the hem. Mermaid: The mermaid gown is fitted all the way through to the knees and then flares out to a fuller volume. Sheath: The sheath dress drapes straight and narrow from the top of the dress to the bottom.

10. Don’t get hung up on sizing — as well as being structured differently, wedding dresses are also sized differently and are much smaller than regular sizing.

Tea-Length: The tea-length gown has a hemline that stops between the ankle and the knee. This dress is best paired with a statement pair of heels.

“Dyl contacted me on Facebook and wanted to take me on a date, I kept saying no, he kept asking so I went on a sympathy date because I felt bad saying no so many times,” Briah said. “It turned out he was a nice guy.” That first bowling and pizza date, as teenagers, couldn’t have been more different to their late summer wedding, which will forever be remembered for its bold, bright floral theme. With two years to plan the big day, after romantic Dylan pulled off a surprise proposal under the guise of making a speech at Briah’s 21st, the couple’s dream day was all they imagined. “I wanted to keep things simple so my bridesmaids wore white with fun pops of

colour in the flowers and lipstick,” Briah said. Enter florist Sarah Bryant from Bryant’s BUDS, Echuca, who pulled together flowers in every colour of the rainbow, to create the show-stopping bouquets, ceremony flowers, reception table centrepieces and cake topper. “The flowers were a big talking point. I really just wanted a fun and bright wedding, we had all the formalities early so we could dance and have fun with our loved ones,” Briah said. There was just the right amount of nostalgia with Briah carrying the garter her grandmother wore on her wedding day, in her purse, and walking down the aisle to the same song her grandparents did when they married 53 years ago. The newlyweds now have their own special

keepsake, a book filled with messages of love and congratulations from their family and friends. “I think my aunt mentioned we should have a guest book for people to personalise with their messages. That’s why we had the photo booth too, we can keep all those things to look back on,” Briah said.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS KNEW KAYLA MASKELL AND RHYS DONCON WOULD BE THE PERFECT MATCH FOR EACH OTHER LONG BEFORE THEY DID.

So when the stars aligned and both became single, Rhys’ brother Aaron played matchmaker and that was that. Their proposal story is one of our favourites and was all about cementing the ties of the family they had created, including Rhys’ four-year-old daughter Eden and the couple’s daughter Stella, two. “It was a little bit different as I proposed to Rhys,” Kayla said. “We had both chatted about wanting to get married and I knew one day he would propose, but I thought about it a lot and decided to make the move. “For a few reasons, number one that I knew well and truly he was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, but also because I wanted to make our story our own. “With two girls, it’s important to be an example for them; that they don’t need to

conform to traditions and that you should always follow your heart and be bold and brave.” While their proposal story has raised a few eyebrows, Kayla and Rhys have no regrets and yes, Kayla has an engagement ring — they enjoyed the experience of choosing the ring together. The Murray River has become their go-to place for relaxed family camping and fishing trips and significant occasions. “We got engaged fittingly at Moama on Murray Resort,” Kayla said. “As a former journalist, I guess words or storytelling was my secret weapon, so I put together a book for Rhys telling the story from how we met to today, with all of our milestones and memories in between. “And then on the final page I popped the question.”

Fast-forward 18 months and the couple returned to the resort for the wedding, with mismatched tables and chairs, masses of native flowers and simple styling creating a modern take on a rustic bush theme. DIY bride Kayla called on her collective village of family and friends to make her dream a reality, with handy helpers arranging furniture, styling and setting up the bar service. “It does add a bit of pressure and it’s not for everyone, but if you have a bit of a creative side it does make for a special day exactly as you picture in your mind,” she said. “It made the celebrations feel like they went longer, rather than just the actual day and night. “We had some fun days in the week leading up, making flower jars and other props and decorations.”

“We wanted something really relaxed and by the river because it resonates with us,” Nikita said. While Nathan’s sole request was the Mo Bar, Nikita dreamed up a chilled-out bohemian wonderland. With Anna Barnes from Events Matter at the helm, they were able to make their freespirited vision a reality. The most difficult thing to tick off their wish list? The food truck. “We wanted to have food trucks from the start and that was the hardest thing to find,” Nikita said. In the end an Airstream serving up endless wood-fired pizza saved the day. It wasn’t until Nikita drove in, moments

before the ceremony, that she laid eyes on the finished product. “It was amazing to see it all come together,” she said. “It looked exactly how I had envisioned it and that’s a credit to Anna.” With a macramé arbour paired with a fresh mix of white and green flowers as the backdrop, the couple exchanged vows before taking a few moments to reflect and see their hard work in action. From rugs and cushions to bar and peacock chairs, the open-air reception was peppered with loads of seating options to create that boho vibe, but also for practicality. As Nikita said, “there’s nothing worse than having nowhere to rest your dancing feet”.

“We wanted to make sure everyone had somewhere to sit and there was plenty of pizza going around.” As guests wandered into the reception they were treated to a cocktail and music, and dug into a giant grazing table. The newlyweds made their entrance to a surprise guard of honour and a wave of high-fives and cheers before dancing the night away under the gum trees.

WHEN IT COMES TO WEDDING PLANNING TWO HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE, AND MODERN BRIDES EMMA KEEP AND CAITLIN DEWAR CAPITALISED ON THAT WHEN PLANNING THEIR SPECIAL DAY.

“Being two females we both wanted to have input and share the responsibility of planning,” Emma said. “And luckily we were on the same page every time,” Caitlin added. What started as a beautiful friendship turned to love and, during a whirlwind eightmonth engagement, the couple planned every detail of their romantic rustic-style wedding with a contemporary twist. Emma and Caitlin wanted to celebrate their way, but still adhere to some traditions, so they thought outside of the square when it came to buying wedding dresses and walking down the aisle. They shopped for their wedding dresses separately, relying on Caitlin’s sister to make sure they didn’t turn up in the same gown. “We didn’t want to have dresses that were

way too similar, or be so opposite they would clash,” Emma said. “As it was, we both planned to have our hair exactly the same and it took a bit of manoeuvring behind the scenes by our bridesmaids to get Caitlin to change her style a bit.” When it came to the night before the wedding both brides stayed with their respective mothers and bridesmaids in separate apartments, and didn’t lay eyes on one another until they were walking down the aisle. “It actually made so much sense staying at the same place, while the hairdresser was in my room, the makeup artist was with Caitlin, and our photographer didn’t have to travel between two places,” Emma said. Both wanted to make a traditional entrance

to the ceremony and so they walked in from opposite sides, meeting in the centre and continuing down the aisle with their fathers. “We wanted our dresses to be a secret until we walked down the aisle, and we were both wearing what the other expected,” Caitlin said. Savvy DIY bride Emma spent weeks leading up to the wedding spray-painting jars and photo frames in rose gold, with simple-butstylish decor such as rustic wine barrels and festoon lighting adding an air of casual elegance to the reception. “We had a cocktail-style reception at The Vault because we wanted to keep everything casual and just trusted that everything would fall into place, and it did,” Caitlin said.

Keen prospector Bill Hoskin had been accumulating the small pieces of gold he found in his travels, with the intention of having enough to propose to his love Lauren Ure, until he happened upon a nugget large enough for the purpose. Armed with a screenshot of a simple gold band with an oval-shaped diamond, and the gold nugget, Bill left the creation of the ring to the team at Thomas Jewellers in Shepparton. On AFL Grand Final day 2017, Bill suggested a hike up the aptly-named Lovers Hill near Avenel and — with their then eightmonth-old daughter Savannah and two dogs as witnesses — asked Lauren to be his wife. “Our proposal was romantic and unique,” Lauren said. “I’d sent Bill a screenshot of a ring I’d seen a year before he found the nugget and he had kept it. “My ring is very simple but it’s exactly what I wanted, it turned out perfectly.” Lauren said her engagement ring was extraspecial given its origins, and how it came to be was a story that was different and would become part of their family history. “Once Bill found the nugget, he showed me, but he never let anyone else touch it. “So other than the jeweller, Bill and I are the only ones to have held the gold — that’s a bit special.” Lauren and Bill sealed their love with a romantic autumn wedding at Holmesglen at Eildon on Saturday, March 2, 10 years to the day they officially became a couple.

And that’s exactly what Matthew Chan did when he got down on one knee and asked Kelsey Bicknell to marry him on a Mooloolaba beach. After he picked the venue — Flowerdale Estate — located halfway between their families in Shepparton and their lives in Melbourne, she wove her magic. Kelsey injected the venue with steel, pipe, neon lights, a dramatic colour palette of pinks and reds and an exotic mix of florals. The result was modern and moody with industrial vibes. “I had never been one of those girls who had always dreamt about their wedding dress; I had dreamt more about the design of my invitations and styling of the venue,” Kelsey said. “I was in my element. I loved every minute of planning our wedding.”

From the invitations and signage to the fortune cookie bonbonniere — you name it, she designed it. And with a sign writer for a dad, together they were able to bring all of her ideas to life. It was the geometric lace of her White April gown that inspired the modern alternative to an arbour that later became the cake backdrop. A last-minute decision led Kelsey to her dream dress at Shepparton’s Brides & Maids. “My mum insisted I try some dresses on just for style and shape,” she said. “I had mind set on a designer in Melbourne but to my surprise that dress I tried on in Shepparton was the ‘one’. “It suited me perfectly; it was light, relaxed and unique and I truly felt so comfortable and myself in it.”

Kelsey curated the perfect setting to throw one heck of a party. Taking advantage of the Labour Day long weekend and choosing a dual venue with onsite accommodation eliminated stress in favour of fun. Avoiding the often awkward time between the ceremony and reception, they hosted predrinks with grazing platters and an acoustic performer who turned DJ for the main event. To keep things low-key they opted for a cocktail reception. “We wanted a relaxed and fun vibe. Nothing too serious or formal, it’s not our style,” Kelsey said. “We simply wanted to celebrate with our family and friends — a party.”

before our wedding ceremony,” Lisa said. “We spent all day together. I really felt this made our day go slowly and not zoom by. What I love about this is I remember the whole day, not just seeing each other at the ceremony at 4.30 pm. “Having the photos before created a relaxed approach to the day with no reason to rush or not be with our guests. “Our wedding was about sharing everything together, so spending the day with each other was a great idea.”

HOW MUCH CAKE DO YOU NEED?

Most couples have an idea of the kind of cake they would like well in advance, gathering inspiration and discussing likes and dislikes. Jenaya recommends engaging a baker about six months before the wedding date, especially for a weekend wedding, as bakers are often booked-up well in advance. Bakers specialise in different types of cake so it is important to check that the baker, whose cakes you like the look of, makes the kind of cake that you want to eat. For example, Jenaya doesn’t make fruit cakes or mud cakes but is always happy to recommend a fellow baker who can meet a client’s needs. When it comes to the flavour of the cake there are lots of options. Jenaya offers 15 different flavours, including

Lots of factors influence how large a wedding cake needs to be. The number of guests is the most obvious one, as everyone would rather over-cater than risk running out of cake. Will the cake be served as dessert or will there be a dessert course followed by cake and coffee? If guests have already filled up with dessert, smaller portions of cake can be served. If the cake itself is the dessert, larger portions will be needed. NOT EVERYONE LIKES CAKE

As crazy as it seems to us cake addicts, there are plenty of people who don’t like cake. Jenaya said offering a range of desserts with the cake as a focal point was a great alternative.

Macarons, tarts, panna cottas, brownies and mousses are all options for a dessert table. About two to three portions per person is a good guideline to work on. Jenaya offers about 15 to 20 options and couples usually choose four or five favourites to be served to their guests. The desserts can even be tweaked to fit in with the colour palette of the wedding. AND NOT EVERYONE CAN EAT CAKE

As food allergies and intolerances are common, most couples like to take any dietary requirements their guests may have into account when choosing cake and dessert options. Jenaya said she was often asked for vegan options and she has a range of tried and trusted recipes to cater for different needs including vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free. A dessert table with a variety of sweets makes catering for different dietary requirements, as well as for a range of tastes, easier so that everyone can join in the feasting and enjoy the celebrations.

Pinterest became Alex’s go-to when planning the relaxed boho-inspired celebration with a marquee, festoon lighting, flowers, gum leaves and timber furniture transforming a typical backyard into something special for the childhood sweethearts. Having the wedding ceremony and reception at home meant the couple could spend the entire day with family and friends and their two gorgeous sons, Jaxon and Keegan, could join in the fun. “My first thought was a winery wedding, it’s what I had always planned, but we’ve been together for 10 years and have two boys so the more I thought about it, having the wedding at home really suited our present lifestyle,” Alex said.

The emotion-charged ceremony was made even more so by the couple honouring three special people, who were no longer with them, by reserving three vacant chairs, each with a photo and red rose. “My dad, Jake’s dad and my brother Ashley are no longer with us but we wanted to make them a part of our wedding as they are very important to us. Our guests were really touched by this, it was a really nice way to honour them,” Alex said. Walking down the aisle to Ed Sheeran’s Perfect, Alex said the song was meaningful and reflected their relationship. “We have been together since we were 15, and are each other’s first loves. We have been through a lot of curveballs together so this

was just the perfect song,” she said. Her gorgeous two-piece Grace Loves Lace gown was the perfect choice for the early autumn wedding day and gave Alex a great excuse for a pre-wedding weekend getaway with her sister to try the dress on in-store on the Gold Coast. “I knew I didn’t want to take the chance of buying online, I wanted to try it on, so my sister and I made a weekend of it,” Alex said. A SUMMER ROMANCE-TURNED-MARRIAGE SOUNDS LIKE A MOVIE PLOT, BUT FOR HOLLY BENNETT AND RILEY WATKINS IT’S A TRUE LOVE STORY.

Despite being together for a decade, Holly and Riley didn’t give themselves much time to organise their wedding, planning the day in a mere four months. Ten years after they met at an Echuca pub, the pair finally had a date — a Friday — with every intention of making a weekend of it. With the clock ticking, invitations were first on the to-do list. To save time and money, the environmentally conscious couple opted for a wedding website rather than the printed alternative — allowing them to instantly save the date and update it as the planning followed. “Because it was a short turnaround I didn’t see the point of doing hard copies when everyone is online,” Holly said. “We had a section for accommodation and then I added information about the Saturday later.”

While for the most part the short engagement meant they simply had to be decisive, Holly admitted she was nervous about finding the dress. “I went in with no idea of what I wanted,” she said. “It was the last dress at the first shop.” Holly had spotted the long-sleeved, highnecked gown with feminine lace and a split as soon as she walked in. When she finally tried it on she had the moment. The moment when she just knew, her mum burst into tears and she put in a rush order. A fun, relaxed atmosphere was at the forefront of the planning. Riley picked maroon for the bridesmaids’ dresses and Holly’s love of doughnuts led them to a dessert that guests could enjoy on their way to the dance floor. They were married in a riverside ceremony

surrounded by gum trees and bold native flowers in pinks and red, before a marquee reception with festoon lights and an open-air dance floor. Meanwhile, Polaroids showed the highlight reel of their relationship beside photos of parents and grandparents on their wedding days. Taking the microphone as MC, Holly’s brother Clayton set the scene for a fun night. “He surprised us with a rap about Riley and I meeting, our relationship and welcoming him to the family,” Holly said. “Everyone lost it and cheered.” And with a rendezvous organised for Saturday afternoon at the American Hotel, the pressure was off and they could enjoy themselves.
