As part of the program, trainees are also invited to participate in networking events run by the Murray Business Network where they have been exposed to top-level guest speakers including Jodie Fox, Michael McQuinn, Stacey Currie and Barnaby Howarth. Trainees also undertake etiquette sessions with one of Australia’s most recognized and respected etiquette experts to help them improve the impression they create at work functions, business meetings and external events. The overarching goal of the Learning, Innovation and Development program is to support trainees to work their way through each certificate and to ultimately become future leaders of the club. It is a unique training model in which participants can study, learn on the job and earn an income at the same time. WELCOME! There are big decisions awaiting you once you finish school and head out into the big wide world. Are you interested in heading to university, does a gap year appeal or are you looking at joining the workforce? These are all questions you need to ask yourself and quite often the hardest decision to make is which direction to take. Here in the Echuca-Moama Careers, Education & Employment magazine we hope to help you along the path and in this edition we take a look at two different people, both taking on the experience of an apprenticeship, both at different ages. Mitchell has left secondary school to take on a chef apprenticeship at Rich River Golf Club Resort, while Kirsten has chosen to have a family first and then make her way into her dream career as a chef also. Both have been able to follow their dreams, no matter what their age, and both are proof if you want anything bad enough, you just have to go out and chase it. We also take a look at the value of work experience for secondary students and the importance of checking out potential career options.

just remember it’s ok to not have all the answers and sometimes where you are heading may not necessarily be where you end up and you know what, that’s ok.
Work experience is a valuable school based program and can help lead, or steer you away from a particular path.
Just remember knowledge is king and you can never have too much information, especially when it comes to something as important as your future and always remember if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.

Straight out of school, and straight out of the university of life, two apprentice chefs could not be more different if they tried — but it is working for both of them APPRENTICESHIPS are a great way to start your career. Available to anyone of working age, an apprenticeship offers opportunities for training, studying and earning an income across a variety of qualification levels in many occupations. They provide a great path for re-entering the workforce or a change in career and can even be started while you’re still at school finishing Years 11 and 12. Upon completion of your Australian Apprenticeship, you will have a nationally recognised qualification that can take you anywhere and one that is held in high regard in many overseas countries as well. For 16-year-old Mitchell Chapman and 29-yearold mother of three Kirsten Frith the chance to start apprenticeships as chefs at Rich River Golf Club Resort earlier this year has provided them both with the opportunity to chase their dreams. Mitchell jumped at the chance to leave school. “I like cooking and always wanted to learn how to make and prepare food,” Mitchell said. “I didn’t like school and I wasn’t learning anything. I didn’t want to go to uni and starting my
apprenticeship young means I will be ahead of everyone else and in three years’ time, I will be fully qualified and can work anywhere.”
went to school I thought it was finally time to do something about becoming a chef and here I am,” she said.
Mitchell doesn’t mind the fact that while most of his friends are mucking around after school, he is working nights and some weekends.
While Kirsten is busy juggling work and family life, she wouldn’t have it any other way as she is really enjoying the challenge of becoming a chef.
“I don’t play sport and I am happy to concentrate on my work. I enjoy the hours I work and I would recommend becoming a chef to anyone. It’s really good and I am certainly not sorry that I have left school.
“There is always something to do and I really enjoy the busy kitchen. The hours are working out fine so far and returning to school (Tafe) has been great because I am doing something I love.”
“One day I would like to work on a cruise ship and eventually open my own restaurant.” In the first year of their apprentice the duo are learning all about food preparation, time management, working in a team and respecting the uniform. The job entails 38 hours a week including six hours at Tafe which they head to every Monday at the Echuca campus.
Kirsten said working at a place such as Rich River Golf Club Resort offers a lot of variety because they serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and they also make all their own cakes, sweets and slices, which is something she might like to branch into at some stage. “I am not sure where I will end up but I am certainly enjoying the journey,” she added.
Kristen’s journey has been a little more roundabout, but she has made it in the end.
Both Mitchell and Kirsten agree that being offered an apprenticeship has certainly been an opportunity for them and they are keen to make the most of it.
“When I finished Year 12 I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do so I started working and I ended up having my family. When my youngest

How to write a resume A well written resume is the key to getting a job. You may have the most experience or the best qualifications but if your resume is poorly written you may have trouble getting an interview, let alone the job. It is important to spend some quality time getting your resume right. A resume should show that you are employable and have the right qualification, education, experience, skills and level of professionalism for the job. It can vary in length depending on experience and education. Keeping the information simple and wellpresented is the key and might achieve better results than a two-page resume full of unnecessary information. Information should be presented in the following order: • Contact details,
Your resume doesn’t have to include: birthdate, gender, address, ailments, disabilities or health status. (Only consider including such information if you think it strengthens your application.) Double-check everything that you include in your resume. If you mention the company’s name, make sure you get it right. If you mention the name of places you’ve worked before, make sure you get that right. Mistakes on resumes are worse than typos. Don’t include images and stick to easy-to-read fonts and formats and always get someone to read over and review your resume.

Having a crack at the University of Life Those first tentative steps towards fulltime employment are big ones, and can be intimidating, but the try-before-you-buy option of work experience is a particularly handy way to find out what’s what in the career you think you want WORK experience provides school age students with a great opportunity to head out into the wide world of employment and check out perspective career choices. Before committing to studying or leaving school for a career that may or may not be what are they think it is. Bendigo South East College student Jeremy Robinson spent his work experience week at the Riverine Herald, learning all about his passion — photography. His week included working in the field, setting up photo shoots and editing and taking photos with Riverine Herald head photographer Luke Hemer. “I chose to work at the Riv because my passion is photography and I thought a local newspaper would really enhance my enjoyment of photography, it was a great learning experience and I really enjoyed it,” Jeremy said. Jeremy said his time spent at the paper has encouraged him to continue down the photography path. “I believe I still want to go down the path of photography, it is a real passion of mine and I enjoy it a lot.” Jeremy said he was surprised to find himself on the front page of the paper and to have one of the photos he took also find its way to the front of the paper.
“Work experience is really important during secondary school because it can lead to a future in the area you chose to work in for the week of work experience and I believe that it is really worthwhile because every student can take something out of it.” Moama Grammar student Molly Bruns spent her week of work experience at FitMob. She is interested in a career in the fitness industry and her week at the gym also convinced her she was heading in the right direction. “It was good to spend a week in the gym learning about what it takes to be a personal trainer and it is something I can see myself doing in the future,” Molly said. “I have always loved sport and the challenge of pushing my body and those around me,” she said. The work experience program has been running in secondary schools for many years and is open to students in Year 9 or 10. It was designed for students to explore possible career options, understand employer expectations, develop skills and allow students to increase their self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence. Students are placed with employers primarily to observe and learn — not to undertake activities which require extensive training or expertise.

The benefits of boarding include the strong and close support of teachers and peers, and within Hopetoun Hall, boarders are involved in social activities, study routines and specific educational programs, including tutoring assistance. There is a very strong learning culture that supports all boarders; students often spend time studying in groups, encouraging and championing each other.
During their time as boarders, students are provided with many opportunities to immerse themselves in co-curricular activities such as music, creative arts and sport, as well as College and broader community focuses. Boarders are encouraged to participate socially in personal and group events, including friend and family celebrations, plus group excursions.
Boarders are responsible for organising themselves and managing their time at their home away from home. These responsibilities assist in the development of a range of independent life skills and prepare the girls for life beyond the gates of the College. All Year 12 boarders experience leadership training to prepare them for their important senior positions within the House. Together, these students work on and promote
Our 2017 Boarding Prefect, Tegan Cavallari, feels fortunate to have been involved in, and orchestrated, many inspiring initiatives with her peers, as well as having formed close friendships during her time as a Genazzano Boarder. She reflects, “Throughout my time boarding at Genazzano, I have had countless opportunities to partake in a multitude of new, challenging and exciting experiences. As a Boarding House of up to forty girls, we all share a close bond with one another. Our Boarders enjoy many valuable experiences during their time at Genazzano, including the development of lifelong friendships. They leave as independent, confident and caring young women with an aspiration towards excellence and motivation to challenge their potential and strive for greatness.
