Explore your own backyard The time is finally right. With restrictions lifted on local travel, it’s time to shake off those iso blues and explore your own backyard. On the river, next to the river, or along forest tracks, there’s plenty to keep you outdoors and active around Deni this winter. Grab the bikes, golf clubs or fishing gear for a memorable day. Or light a campfire, and stay a while.

Sanctuary in heart of town In the heart of Deniliquin is the natural wonder that is the Island Sanctuary. The picturesque sanctuary features a number of trees, grasses and animal life which are sure to intrigue anyone who enters the gates. in the area where you have stopped, they will tell you a bit more about the local indigenous culture and teach you how to pronounce some of the natural elements in the local Wamba Wamba language.

It formally links the attraction to the Beach to Beach walk trial which begins at Willoughby’s Beach at the end of Memorial Park Drive and follows the Edward River to McLean Beach in the west.

The predominant tree on the island is the river redgum which is complemented by black box and concentrations of young redgums where seeds have been deposited by heavy rains and flooding. Grasses such as river cooch and kikuya are dominant and provide excellent coverage.

You will emerge from the Island Sanctuary at the end of Edwardes St, which will lead you to the Deniliquin CBD for shopping, or you can continue along the river, on the all abilities access boardwalk. The new Island Sanctuary entrance, which includes a dedicated car park, was opened in early June. As you make your way through the sanctuary, make sure to stop and read the interpretive panels. They will not only tell you about the flora and fauna you’re likely to find

Wildlife such as kangaroos and nocturnal animals take refuge in the island and more than 100 species of birds can be found within the sanctuary, with water birds most common. A vast majority of the animals found in the Island Sanctuary have been bred there including additional wildlife such as water rats, tortoises, skinks, lizards and snakes. Wildlife, however, is not the only attraction of the area, which is steeped in history and folklore. Found

in the Island Sanctuary is the first building ever to be constructed in Deniliquin, located on the south bank of the Edward River at the junction of the Tarangle Creek and the river. The building is said to have belonged to a Dr Coward who established himself as the first medico in 1948. Also near the Tarangle Creek is a tree now called Jack’s Tree which is recorded as the marking point of the grave of notorious bushranger Old Jack of the Melville Gang. The Island Sanctuary, which covers an area of about 16 hectares, is also the perfect destination for a quiet picnic. An isolated sheltered area provides barbecue facilities for a get-together and there are plenty of picnic table areas located around the reserve near the river. For a map and more information on the Island, visit the Peppin Heritage Centre in George St, call 1800 650 712 or visit visitdeni.com.au.

Take a stroll to see Finley’s

MURAL TRAIL

A series of large scale paintings which pay tribute to Finley’s heritage and some of its famous faces form a new art trail in the Southern Riverina town. Australian mural painter Damian Mitchell and other various artists have transformed a number of internal and external walls throughout the community. Those completed today can be enjoyed during a short, 15 minute stroll. The tour starts with the two biggest murals — located at the corner of Riverina and Newell Highways at the Finley Bowling Club. On the wall facing the Riverina Highway is an intricate depiction of the horse drawn cart that would deliver barrels of alcohol to town in its early years of settlement. From the club’s car park you can enjoy the second mural which celebrates families and bowling. If you aren’t familiar with the artist you soon will be, as he used his own face for the bowler. Continue along the Riverina Highway and take a left into to Coree St to see the next illustration, which is at St Joseph’s Primary School. The school’s mural, located near the administration building, is inspired by the school’s students and also depicts a nun. Further along Coree St you will come across Pinnuck St, and after taking a left you will find the Tuppal Hotel at the Murray St intersection. The large ram mural is the first sight that will greet you at this hotel, and inside you’ll find some more artistic surprises. In the entrance of the hotel is a mural paying tribute to the late Tom Ryan, a well respected local resident.

In the pool room, some of Finley’s most successful ex-pats are featured. On the left facing wall is the world-renown alternate-rock band Spiderbait, made up of former Finley students Janet English, Damian Whitty and Mark Quor, who is better known as Kram. On the adjoining wall is AFL 1999 Brownlow Medallist Shane Crawford. When you’re done inspecting the art at the Tuppal, head north along Murray St to Finley Quality Meats where you will find an artistic rendition of the business logo as a mural. Cross the road and head to the laneway located to the right of Finley Pharmacy. Here you will find yet another well-presented mural featuring a Finley streetscape. The names of the local school students and staff who created this mural are included for posterity. Continue past the laneway mural until you reach Endeavour St, and after turning right you will come across the last of the murals created so far. The wall of Boomerang Motors facing Railway Park pays homage to the long-running business. Founding owner Bob Brooks is featured in the artwork, along with a 1951 FX Holden.

Bringing History to Life Deniliquin is home to one of the largest collections of historic vehicles and memorabilia in the region. The Depot’s ever evolving displays allow you to immerse yourself in the past, amongst the family-friendly and interactive spaces. The unique collection of vehicles and memorabilia tell stories of life at home and on the road, with touches of Hollywood, Australian motoring, trucking, transport, emergency vehicles of the past and vehicles from all around the world dating back to 1908. Toys, furniture and white goods are among the displays. The displays build on the historic vehicles and memorabilia collected by Neville and Debbie Purtill and the Purtill family over many years. The Purtill family has been involved in the transport industry since the 1950s, when Keith and Pat Purtill started a bus service. Tribute is paid to the pioneers of the business which has continued under the guidance of their sons and

grandchildren with a number of their retired buses part of the display, including the 1948 Bedford bus famously known as ‘Rosie’.

The Depot is located in Hardinge St, Deniliquin, and is open 10am to 4pm weekdays and 10am to 3pm on weekends.

Other crowd favourites include the DeLorean, a replica of the one used in the Back to the Future movies, and the pink 1959 Cadillac sedan de ville which is the inspiration for the second storey function room.

Entry is $15 for adults, $10 for children, concession card holders and seniors, or $30 for a family of four (two adults and two children).

The collection of fuel bowsers adds some intrigue, and there is a retail shop where you can buy memorabilia and giftware. The items on display will be ever evolving, so with every visit there will be a new part of history to be explored and enjoyed.

Join the Fast Lane Club to take advantage of exclusive benefits for regular visitors, including unlimited admission for 12 months, invitations to signature events, discounts in the retail store and more. The membership is $48 for an adult; $36 for a child, senior or concession and $90 for a family of four (up to two nominated adults). Bike trail adventures The Murray Valley Regional Park mountain bike trail is perfect for travellers seeking new and different experiences. Structured around the existing kangaroo tracks throughout the Deniliquin park, the trail winds through the forests iconic red gums and showcases the beauty of the area. And you don’t need to be an expert rider to tackle the 12 kilometre trail network, with many families taking advantage of the track, which was officially opened in April 2019. You can choose from three loop trails, the shortest just 7.6km, and longer 11km or 12km loops. Sarah Bain and her nine year-old daughter Savannah had ‘‘so much fun’’ when they visited Deniliquin to give the trail a go. There are 70 wayfinding bollards constructed from recyclable plastic along the trail, which Sarah said made the track even easier to access. ‘‘We just followed the signs,’’ Sarah said. ‘‘I think that’s the fun of it, just keep riding, and see where it takes you. ‘‘We took lots of rests due to Savannah’s age and lots of water stops were needed.

‘‘We can’t even remember how long it took us because we were having too much fun in the moment.’’ Sarah described the experience as the ‘‘perfect way to let your inner child go wild’’, and to bond with family and friends. ‘‘It was really nice to spend time outdoors, in nature, taking in the scenery.

The district’s fascinating history can be explored through a range of well researched, well thought out and presented displays at the Deniliquin & District Historical Society Museum. The museum, located in the former police inspector’s residence in Macauley St, Deniliquin, reopened in early June after a two month break due to Coronavirus. Among its exhibitions is an extensive display and historical records of Deniliquin and its people, reflecting the different aspects of the lively community. The main attractions include police records, historical costumes, newspapers including the Deniliquin Pastoral Times dating back to 1859, and items relating to the history of the Deniliquin town band, Picnic Races, Red Cross, a war veterans display and a display about the old Deniliquin Railway Station and Echuca railway line. A new display paying tribute to Deniliquin’s railway history has become a focal point at the museum. Plastered on the front wall is a 10m by 3m mural of the first steam train to roll into Deniliquin. It is a replica

of a photograph taken by Herman Moser on that day, on June 16, 1876. Complementing the display is an original railway station awning which was restored by society members. The Historical Society is also planning to add two 1910 stationary steam engines to the popular railway collection. They are restoring a Ronaldson Tippett Austral stationary engine that was built in Ballarat in 1910. If successful, the engine will become a working exhibit for public viewing. The Historical Society is also working to refurbish a 1910 Robey and Company stationary steam engine. It is unable to be restored but is being painted in its original colours. If you are not comfortable getting out of the house, a virtual tour of the museum is available. You can find a link on the Historical Society’s Facebook page. Otherwise you can visit the Historical Society museum in Macauley St on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10am, or by appointment. Phone president Lindsay Renwick on 0458 454 162 for more information or to book an appointment.

‘‘We came across quite a number of kangaroos, but they were happy to just watch us as we rode past. ‘‘It was really great bonding time with my daughter. We stopped by the river to have some afternoon tea, and just enjoyed each other’s company.’’ If you did not think to bring your bike with you, free mountain bike hire is offered at the Deniliquin Visitor Information Centre in George St. While the centre is temporarily closed due to Coronavirus restrictions, you can call 1800 650 712 to organise hire and pickup. The track is located within the Murray Valley Regional Park and can be easily accessed via the Willoughby’s Beach entrance or from Packenham St.

Fishing, camping and more! Winter offers a great opportunity to explore the district’s natural wonders, and many of them can be found in local forests. You can explore majestic river red gums, go walking along the trails, fish for your dinner in the mighty Murray and Edward River, paddle along in a canoe or kayak, watch for Australian animals and go birdwatching, or even tackle the mountain bike trails. The Murray Valley and Murrumbidgee Valley National Parks also offer the perfect back drop for your camping trip. Until Coronavirus restrictions are lifted completely, there are some limitations at camp sites. And you must pre-book a site, and pay a small booking fee, to better enable National Parks and Wildlife Service to provide a safe environment for you to camp. Limitation may vary from camp site to camp site, so make sure to check the details for your favourite camping spot online at www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/ camping-and-accommodation. For a real taste of peaceful solitude, the Willoughby’s Beach camp ground at Deniliquin is the ideal choice. It’s suitable for tents, caravans and motorhomes, and is a great camping spot for the whole family to enjoy. You can even bring your dog along to join in the fun. From this camp ground you can access the popular Beach to Beach walk which follows the Edward River to McLean Beach in Deniliquin’s west. From the walk you have easy access to the Deniliquin CBD so you can stop for a coffee, a bite to eat or a little retail therapy. Not far from nearby Mathoura is the Edward River Bridge camp ground, which

offers a very similar experience to the Deniliquin site. Edward River Bridge has been described as bush camping at its best. There’s plenty to keep everyone happy, including the energising Gulpa Creek walk. Enjoy a barbecue at the neighbouring Edward River Bridge picnic area, or simply take the opportunity to relax under the shade of a river red gum. There’s ample room for kids and your dog to run around. Here you will also find a series of four steel sculptures by artist Geoff Hocking showing the history of the river red gum forest, from Aboriginal fishermen to pastoralists and timber cutters. It’s a unique way to learn about the rich history of the many different ways people use forests. Both the Deniliquin and Mathoura camping grounds offer great fishing spots, with plenty of space to cast your line along the river. You could even return home with a great story to tell if you can snag one of the monster Murray Cod the region is famous for. They are also great vantage points to launch your canoe or kayak, and in the warmer months both spots are popular with swimmers. To Deniliquin’s north, in Hay, you will find the Wooloondool camp ground in the Murrumbidgee Valley Regional Park. This

is also a dog friendly location and ideal for relaxing in nature.

DENI GOLF CLUB Deniliquin is one of the most picturesque of the famous golf courses that stretch along the mighty Murray River and tributaries.

You are invited to enjoy the beauty of this golf course, alongside the kangaroos, kookaburras, Superb Parrots, echidna, goannas, lizards, pelicans and a host of other wildlife that abounds in this paradise of nature. And as COVID-19 restrictions begin to ease, what better way to enjoy nature in the Southern Riverina than with a pleasant stroll around the golf course. The club will continue to abide by advice from health authorities and is ensuring that strict social distancing protocols apply. With its 18 manicured fairways and true greens, Deniliquin is a shining example of Australia’s magnificent golf courses. It is also in a superb location on the edge of Murray Valley Regional Park, yet just a stone’s throw from the centre of town. By modern standards the course is not long – 5817 metre par 72 for men, and 5118 metre par 72 for ladies.

However, off the back tees it is a challenge for all levels of player, as many professionals who have tried to tame the course have discovered. Poor shots find the huge trees that line most of the couch fairways, while the greens are fast but true and always in great condition. A feature of the Deniliquin golf course is the ‘same day play’ principle that applies. On most days you can phone the pro shop on (03) 5881 3333 and book your tee off time, or just call in and one of the friendly volunteer staff will cater for your golfing needs. If you are not a golfer, call in and enjoy the club’s facilities. Friday nights are a speciality, when there are meat raffles, great meals and a fun atmosphere where locals will make you feel welcome. For more information contact the club on (03) 5881 1325, or go to www.denigolfclub.com.au.

Explore Jerilderie

The hidden gem of the Riverina You’ll find plenty of things to do and see in this historic town, with its heritage sites, quaint shops, a stunning lake and pleasant short walks. Jerilderie is where bushranger Ned Kelly attempted to have his 8,000-word manifesto printed by the local newspaper editor in 1879. Begin your adventure on the banks of Billabong Creek with a self-guided tour of the 16 sites - the Ned Kelly Raid Trail of 1879 - and discover how Kelly held up the town.

Lake Jerilderie and Luke Park

Enjoy a picnic or you can utilise the free barbecue facilities and the undercover seating. It has a fun children’s playground which is fully enclosed and shaded.

Coleambally

Head north of Jerilderie to Coleambally. Learn about the history of irrigation or marvel at the town’s water tower - a stunning piece of architecture, with mosaic tiles telling the story of this close knit town’s strong community ties and history. Debate the shape and nominate it as a wine glass or a schooner.

Darlington Point

The gorgeous riverside town of Darlington Point has some of the most beautiful camping and leisure spots in the Riverina. It is also home to the highly popular Altina Wildlife Park. www.altinawildlife.com

The Long Paddock

TOURING ROUTE The Long Paddock Touring Route has been named among the top travel experiences in NSW by Traveltalk magazine, and it’s easy to see why. Named for the colloquial term given to the travelling stock routes, The Long Paddock stretches the full length of the Cobb Highway from Echuca/Moama on the Victorian border through to the iconic outback town of Wilcannia. The project is a collaboration between the adjoining Edward River, Hay and Murray River council areas and has become an integral part of the tourism landscape for the district. Launched in 2006, the first stage of the Long Paddock saw the installation of 57 information panels that bring the history of the region to life with images and text. Covering stories of the drovers, transport, rivers, cattle, wool and the pioneers who opened up the country, the panels leave visitors with a sense of the importance of the region and its place in Australian history. The Long Paddock also boasts 11 large scale sculptures that tell the stories, tales and history of the region. The sculptures are a beautiful reflection of the impact this region has had on the wealth and success of the nation and reflect the heart and soul of these small rural communities. The route starts in Moama off the Cobb Highway where you will find ‘The Barges’ by Geoff Hocking, installed in 2012. Next, at Mathoura’s Visitor Information Centre, is ‘The Drover and Horse’ by Corey Thomas (2009) and ‘The Timber Cutters’ by Geoff Hocking (2011).

Visit the historic township of Jerilderie Heritage walks, a beautiful tree-lined streetscape, and the cleanest toilets in NSW await visitors to the historic township of Jerilderie.

In Deniliquin, you will find ‘Shod’ by Jonathan Leahy next to the Peppin Heritage Centre, and ‘Cut’ by the same artist at the truck stop on Davidson St on north Deniliquin.

Established in 1859, Jerilderie is nestled on the banks of Australia’s longest creek — and possibly the world’s longest. The Billabong Creek winds its way through Jerilderie and 321km of quintessentially Australian landscape.

Moving on to Pretty Pine, you will find ‘Smoko’ by Geoff Hocking at the front of the hotel. Another piece by Geoff Hocking, ‘The Headless Horseman’, is located just up the road between Wanganella and Booroorban.

Located on the Newell Highway, Jerilderie is the main inland route linking Melbourne and Brisbane. It is also the shortest route from Adelaide to Sydney.

In Hay, in the area known as Bushy Bend on the north eastern side of the Murrumbidgee River, you will find ‘Langs Crossing’, ‘Cobb’s Wheels’ and ‘Murrumbidgee Landscapes’, all by John Wheeler. Then at Ivanhoe you will find ‘The Pioneers’ by Wayne Strickland before the route ends in Wilcannia For more information about the touring route, the best way to experience the truly unique outback adventure and the communities it encompasses, go to www.thelongpaddock.com.au.

The Kidman Way starts at Jerilderie, a 644km stretch of road where caravaners and campers can backtrack to the outback. It’s a ‘bucket list’ journey via the state’s newest town of Coleambally, the gorgeous riverside town of Darlington Point, through to Griffith, and onto Bourke. The Kidman Way joins with Queensland’s Matilda Highway, taking the adventurous traveller a further 1812km to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Jerilderie is known in history as the childhood home of Australia’s greatest military strategist Sir John Monash. His private home stands beautifully preserved in the main street, where you can visit for a coffee and marvel at times gone by. You can soak up the history of this incredible little town, browse shops devoted to vintage wares and collectables, and grab morning or afternoon tea or a delicious meal. Hundreds of caravaners visit the quaint and safe township of Jerilderie each day. Nothing quite as drastic has happened since the Ned Kelly Gang visited in 1879. Ned wrote his famous manifesto, The Jerilderie Letter, whilst the gang kept the town’s prominent citizens hostage in the local hotel. Today, the Kelly bank vault is on view in the Royal Mail Hotel. Visitors can walk the heritage precinct, enjoy the outlaw’s story or experience the serenity of Billabong Creek and Lake Jerilderie. Not a day passes where picturesque Lake Jerilderie is not enjoyed by locals or visitors stretching legs and breathing in the clean eucalypt scented air. The nearby Horgan’s Walk is easy to navigate, peaceful and revitalising. The old world mini railway, located creek side, still captures the imagination of children and adults alike. Run by the local Apex Club, it is available for special bookings and events. The productive plains surrounding Jerilderie make a significant contribution to Australia’s fresh produce including Billabong Produce tomatoes and olives, rice, Bonic’s organic wines, cotton and cereal cropping. You can purchase many of these products from the local IGA. The Visitor Information Centre is at 63 Jerilderie St, sharing the space with Sticky Fingers Candy Shop so you can pick up a gelato or old fashioned sweet when collecting your maps, information and souvenirs. Animals up close and personal The unique zoo-fari experience offered at Altina Wildlife Park is truly extraordinary, AND an experience you are unlikely to forget. Unlike other zoos in Australia, you get to see the wide range of exotic and rare animals up close and personal, all while travelling in style on a horse drawn or motorised cart. The guided tour takes 2.5 hours and is the only way to see Altina’s animals. And best of all, it’s suitable for animal lovers of all ages. The zoo is located in Darlington Point, in the Murrumbidgee Council area, meaning it’s an easy day trip from any of the Southern Riverina communities. The experience starts with a short walk to see the park’s friendly meerkat family, cheeky ring-tailed lemurs, adorable

common marmoset monkeys that could fit into the palm of your hand, sleepy red pandas and more. You get an hour to see these charming animals before the guided tour begins. The enthusiastic tour guides will tell you about each animal and where they come from, their own role at Altina Wildlife Park’s impressive breeding program and even about some of the animal’s personalities. The guides will coax the animals in with food and treats, to ensure you get that ‘up close’ and unforgettable experience. See various breeds of deer and antelope from around the world, energetic

Mongolian wild horses and even an impressive heard of American Bison before moving on to some of the park’s more exotic animals. It is the giraffes, zebras, rhinos and magnificent lions that are the real heroes of the park. The dedicated zoo keepers have trained several lions to follow commands to aid in health checks, and they’ll put on an impressive demonstration just for you. They do tricks, ‘speak’ on demand for fresh meat treats and will lay down, put their massive paws on display and open their mouths wide to show off their strong

teeth. The park has also trained the hyaenas do the same. This experience of a lifetime costs just $38 for adults and $18 for children aged between two and 16. Children two and under get in free with a paying adult. For an extra cost, you can book an incredible behind the scenes encounter, which includes feeding some of the animals yourself. All visits to the park must be pre-booked by going to www.altinawildlife.com or phoning 0412 060 342.

New Tim Fischer Gallery opened at Lockhart museum Forming part of a new wing of the popular Greens Gunyah Museum, the recently opened Tim Fischer Gallery is a welcome addition to Lockhart’s visitor experience. The gallery provides a unique insight into the fascinating life and times of one of regional Australia’s greatest political characters. Born in Lockhart, Tim Fischer AC retained a strong connection with the town and community, and in early 2019 generously donated many items from his personal collection to the museum.

His period gramophone is just the tip of the display, with the exhibition containing information and images of his long political career, his love of trains, his complete collection of mobile phones and of course his trademark Akubra hat. The Tim Fischer room is complemented by a static display of the museum’s machinery and vehicles. Included in this display is the first and only tractor ever owned by the former Deputy Prime Minister which has been fully restored,

as well as a a fully restored 1922 Garfield fire truck and a Huber tractor. While

there is so much more to experience. A glimpse into the past tells of times of the traditional Wiradjuri owners, the great sheep stations of pastoral kings and thriving settlements during the Federation years. Another highlight of the museum is the acclaimed Doris Golder Wool Art Gallery, showcasing phenomenal artwork and

one of the Riverina’s most historical and important resources. The incredible portraits and landscapes, which at first glance appear to be high quality sepia drawings, are actually created using layer upon layer of washed, combed and undyed natural coloured wool. Having hung in Parliament and toured NSW and Victoria over a number of years, the collection of 22 pictures is now on permanent display in Lockhart. For more information, visitlockhartshire.com.au.

LITTLE TOWN ON A LAKE There’s always plenty on offer in Finley, WHICH is uniquely situated at the junction of the busy Newell and Riverina Highways. As an integral part of the famed Riverina food bowl, the Finley district hosts a diverse range of cropping and agricultural enterprises but it’s also a recreational hub. The man-made Finley Lake is the perfect backdrop for barbecues and picnics, and is ideal for sailing, water skiing and fishing. The Finley district is also renowned for its eateries and shopping, as well as sporting and leisure facilities. It boasts a well rated golf course, two bowling clubs, tennis club, squash courts, grassed playing fields and three licensed clubs. Visitors to Finley can explore items from the past that tell the story of its rich farming heritage to a modern day world. Keeping with the rural focus, see the saleyards in action, visit the Finley Livestock Exchange or browse heritage buildings, pioneer railway museum on the railway heritage precinct, old machinery and a vast array of items from the past at the Finley Historical Museum and Log Cabin. And this year the town has an extra special celebration - Finley turns 125 years year old! For more information on what you can see and do, go to www.finley.org.au.

130 years of Berrigan & District’s history The Berrigan & District Heritage Museum is celebrating 20 years of showcasing the town’s rich 130 year history. A visit to the museum is the perfect way to spend a chilly winter morning before getting out around the town to explore its unique history. Berrigan is proud of being credited with several ‘firsts’, which are showcased in the museum. Civic minded Berrigan men took the lead in organising the first Corowa Conference on Federation in 1893. It is also in Berrigan where the first Rural Fire Brigade in NSW was formed in 1901, as well as the first Parents and Citizens Association in NSW. When you visit this museum you can enjoy a plethora of local oral histories,

Federation information and fire brigade memorabilia. For war history buffs, items celebrating the Berrigan RSL include guns, medals and uniforms. The museum also houses the service records of Berrigan men and women who served in World War II, as well as some which still exist from World War I. There is an extensive collection of photos and press cuttings of early farming and the establishment of irrigation in 1939 via the Mulwala Canal. Education is also celebrated at the museum, with photographs and information on several district schools no longer in operation included. ‘‘Our most special exhibition is the unique collection of oral histories of

local families dating back to the 1800s,’’ museum secretary Marnie Steer said. “We invite all travellers and locals to take advantage of the history we have here, we are always more than willing to open up the museum on any day for those who can’t make it on our allocated open day.’’ The museum anticipates hosting a 20th birthday open day in August 2020. History booklets outlining the transition of the town since it was settled is also expected to be released this year. Located at 60 Jerilderie St, Berrigan, the museum is open every Wednesday from 9am to 11am, or by appointment. For more information, phone 0439 252 363.

Feel like part of the past The displays at the Jindera Pioneer Museum are curated in such a way that you feel like you are part of the past. The museum has a magical feel — calm and peaceful — so that when you walk in the gardens, the slab hut and cottage and around the machinery you can almost hear them in operation. The museum was opened more than 50 years ago, in October 1968, by well known Australian painter Sir Russell Drysdale when went on to become its patron. It was started by the ancestors of families who were among the early settlers of the Jindera, and has been a volunteer run museum ever since. Visitors come to the museum because it offers so many different experiences, least of which is the famous Devonshire teas that are available on Sundays.

Other popular displays include the highly acclaimed collection of local horse drawn vehicles and machinery, many of which were made at one of Jindera’s two blacksmiths. Soon to be added is a working machinery shed, which will house a great collection of operational motors, pumps and other machines that a group of interested folk will tinker with, fix and run regularly.

The collection of historical items includes beautiful china and glassware, fashion and accessories of yesteryear and furniture and fittings showcasing three different class structures of society at the time of settlement.

This is being made possible thanks to a bequest from the late Tim Fischer, a popular Australian politician and former Deputy Prime Minister who called the region home.

There’s also a replica general store with all original fittings, fixtures and items for sale.

The new display will be opened as part of the ‘Lost Trades Day’ at the museum on Sunday, October 4, 2020, where

techniques such as spinning, tatting, butter making, boot making and blacksmithing will be showcased. The Jindera Pioneer Museum is set on two acres. You can choose to meander on your own following the signs and using the historic information you receive on arrival, or you could take advantage of a guided tour for an extra cost. Keep an eye out for the special events which include twilight tours, Heritage Dinners held in the vestibule of the main house and offering all the trappings of a Victorian era meal, and the high teas which spill out into the garden with a sumptuous array of food and music. Jindera Pioneer Museum is located just 15km from Albury and is open daily. Go to www.jinderamuseum.com.au or the museum’s Facebook page to learn more.
