Acknowledgement of Country

T HIS IS YORTA YORTA WOKA (LAND).

We are nestled proudly on the banks of Yorta Yorta Country and thank them as Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and connection to the land and waters.

The contemporary Yorta Yorta community remains connected to their country today.

We also acknowledge Dja Dja Wurrung and Taungurung as traditional custodians of this region.

Visitors to the region have the opportunity to experience the same environment, to share its heritage, its values and the cultural knowledge through authentic stories and experiences directly from Yorta Yorta people living and working on country today.

BE PART OF IT!

Welcome to Echuca Moama — the Murray’s living legend. A story that starts with the traditional owners and custodians, and continues today with the thriving twin towns and riverside

communities that call the region home. Discover, connect, experience, taste, learn and explore as you journey through our region and create memories that will last a lifetime.

A sacred place for tens of thousands of years to the Yorta Yorta people, vital in the establishment of trade between the Australian states following European settlement, and a place that runs through the blood of so many Australians, the mighty Murray River is revered as one of our country’s most legendary natural icons.

Winding its path across 2,600km of the Victorian, New South Wales and South Australian landscape, the Murray is one of the longest navigable rivers in the world, the lifeblood of the surrounding agricultural industry, and a place of spirituality and connection for many who visit her waters.

YORTA YORTA COUNTRY

The Yorta Yorta people are the traditional owners and custodians of the land we now call Echuca Moama. The waters of ‘Dhungala’ (the Murray River) are sacred to the Yorta Yorta people, with many of their beliefs, traditions and stories extending from it.

The Barmah-Millewa forest is a place where large communities lived. The river and forest provided a year-round food source and resources for shelter, weapons, canoes and other equipment.

EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT

Echuca’s development is largely credited to ex-convict, Henry Hopwood, who crossed the Murray in 1853 and gained a licence to occupy a parcel of land near the Murray and Campaspe River junction. He operated a small punt across the river, and later a pontoon bridge, which catered for the increasing movement of livestock between Victoria and New South Wales.

Settlement began in Moama in 1845, and developed rapidly due to the livestock market. James Maiden established a punt across the river and the area became a thriving cattle market and crossing place.

In 1853, Captain William Randell became the first person to travel upstream on

a paddlesteamer from Goolwa, South Australia to Moama, arriving on the Mary Ann. The trip was the beginning of the boat building and riverboat trade era that saw the region flourish.

MUST DO

PORT OF ECHUCA DISCOVERY CENTRE

Trace the history of Echuca’s riverboat trade and shipbuilding industry at the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre.

THE RIVERBOAT TRADE

The riverboat trade exploded in the 1860s, and by 1872 the Port of Echuca was clearing 240 boats annually. Echuca became the second largest port in Victoria and the largest inland port in Australia.

The riverboats were vital in opening up trade between the states, however were superseded by the expansion of the rail system in the late 1880s. A number of original paddlesteamers continue to operate in Echuca Moama today.

The region is home to the world’s largest operating paddlesteamer fleet, and the oldest operating wooden hulled paddlesteamer, the 1866 PS Adelaide

PORT OF ECHUCA

The Port of Echuca is a living monument to the 1870s and the boom of the riverboat trade. Echuca was the third largest port in the country, outside Melbourne and Sydney, and the main ship building centre for the river transport industry.

At its peak, the 1865 wharf was over 300m long and supported eight red gum saw mills. It was made famous in the TV series All the Rivers Run. Today, it is a place where you can learn about the early pioneering days at the Discovery Centre, view steam-powered exhibits, take a paddlesteamer cruise, and visit the surrounding historic shopfronts, pubs and cafes.

THE STORY CONTINUES…

Today, Echuca Moama is home to over 22,000 people and is a tourism favourite, welcoming over 1.5 million visitors each year. Alongside tourism, the region is famous for its agricultural industry, national parks and forests, wine regions, and emerging food scene. While our story will always begin and end with the river, there is so much more to explore, and we invite you to be part of that story.

A Day at Kyabram Fauna Park

Kyabram Fauna Park is the newest zoo to join the crew at Zoos Victoria –a conservation organisation dedicated to fighting extinction and connecting people with wildlife.

The Park’s 55 hectares is home to more than 300 native animals including Koalas, Tasmanian Devils, Short-beaked Echidnas, and Alpine Dingoes. It’s just a 30-minute drive from Shepparton and Echuca, onehour drive from Bendigo, and two-and-a-half hours from Melbourne.

As soon as you enter the gates, you’re immediately transported into a lush, wildlife-rich landscape.

The recently refurbished café with expanded outdoor seating is the perfect place to start your day. Visitors can grab a delicious brew while watching the meerkat mobs’ playful antics.

The Park’s wide, winding pathways guide you through various animal habitats with a sweeping view of the iconic 33-hectare wetlands.

Novice bird watchers and avid twitchers can hide amongst the trees and spot dozens of unique bird species in the newly refurbished bird hide. Thousands of migrating and native bird species are visible from the hide, which offers a 360-degree view of the thriving wetlands ecosystem.

At least 36 species of migratory birds visit Australian wetlands each year, with many travelling more than 20,000km to the northern hemisphere and back. Among them are Great Egrets, Nankeen Night Herons, Brolgas and Royal Spoonbills – all visible at Kyabram Fauna Park.

Take your adventure to the next level with one of the unique animal experiences on offer. These include a close-up with everyone’s favourite dozey marsupial – the Koala, a hosted tour of the newly built Reptile Habitat, or an opportunity to meet Australia’s most dangerous bird – the Cassowary.

Each experience is delivered by a dedicated zoo keeper, who will share insights into how they care for the Park’s animals.

Make sure you check out the Park’s newest residents, Waru, and Kong, who have joined Heidi in a recently upgraded koala habitat.

There’s also a healthy dose of history to explore within the historic Hazelman family home – a four-room cottage that was transported to the park. The cottage contains an interesting collection of memorabilia, photographs and period furniture. The surrounding Transport Through Time display includes a blacksmith’s shop and a machinery shed with buggies and various machines.

Before you venture home, check out the park’s new Leaf insect habitat. These masters of camouflage are fascinating to watch and visitors can enjoy searching high and low for them.
