Country News Reaching Australia’s richest agricultural region
A time to celebrate the past and look to the future Our 50th annual Elmore Field Days will be a signature event for our exhibitors, the farming and regional communities that support us and my own committee. We have been fortunate to achieve this milestone and it reflects the significant energies that have gone into making our annual event such a success during half a century. We are fortunate to still enjoy the support of, and guidance from, a number of our original founders and those who have helped in official or volunteer capacities over the past 50 years. There are a number of us now involved who represent the third generation of the farming families who conceived and created the Elmore Field Days all those years ago. For 2013 we are looking at another successful event. We have seen excellent support and repeat site bookings from numerous exhibitors, so another fully booked out event is expected. In addition, we have a number of new exhibitors who will have something different, informative and relevant in terms of products and services to show farmers, specialist enterprise operators and those who live on and enjoy small acreages. Continuing to provide facilities for comfortable and effective demonstration areas for our exhibitors in particular is an ongoing focus for my committee. We continue to expand the features of our major Agribusiness Pavilion; in coming years we will have additional undercover display facilities and amenities which will also support our visitors to the Elmore Events Centre.
As I write this, we have just experienced a run of late winter rains which, interspersed with a few warmer days, have provided a good seasonal outlook. Irrigators have dams that are close enough to full, our crops will have had a good start and the price outlooks for most rural commodities — especially livestock and grains — are looking positive. The dairy industry, which has experienced many problems, has also seen an overdue increase in milk prices — so there is some positivity in the outlook for that important regional sector as well. The recent fall in the Australian dollar has also revived our export market opportunities, so on a whole we are anticipating another positive year. My committee continues to focus on providing an exhibition that is relevant to, and informative for, all members and ages of the community. Our General Interest Pavilion and marquee events are always extremely well supported by exhibitors and have something to show and interest everyone.
CHECK LIST Tuesday to Thursday – October 1, 2 and 3
We also continue to develop our general site facilities, services and our under-foot conditions. We are delighted Victorian Premier Denis Napthine will officially open the 50th annual Elmore Field Days on Tuesday, October 1 at 1 pm.

David Trewick insights into the latest machine performances. I am sure everyone who attends Elmore this year will leave feeling they have learned something new, with the potential to add value to their lifestyle and rural business endeavours. A special welcome is extended to delegates from our peer events around Australia and New Zealand who are attending the 2013 Conference of Association of Agricultural Field Days of Australasia, hosted this year by us during the Elmore Field Days. Finally I would like to commend all those people in our local communities, on our farms, our rural support businesses, in local government and in the government sector who have contributed so much over so many years to help us reach our 50th event. And a special thankyou to my fellow committee members for the hours they contribute to what is now a year-round project to successfully deliver our three days in October each year.
Our shearing shed activities are also a continuous source of information for our sheep and wool producers, in particular showing what the value-adding and consumer sectors of the market require.
Help and assistance in so many ways has always been forthcoming whenever and wherever it has been sought and I think all of us can look back with a sense of satisfaction in how the Elmore Field Days have evolved and expanded during the past half century.
Our in-field demonstrations continue to expand in machinery types and provide useful

Most people involved in agriculture and rural communities are aware the theft of livestock and, more recently, tractors and farm machinery has been rising in Victoria. Superintendent Craig Gillard from Victoria Police Livestock and Farm Crime Specialists Group will make a special presentation on the issue. The group has 44 agricultural liaison officers and has been operating since October 2011 in all rural police divisions across Victoria. Its primary objective is to reduce livestock theft and farm crime in Victoria and apply improved investigation outcomes for the benefit of the farming community. Supt Gillard’s presentation will have a strong focus on current policing initiatives to reduce the impact of theft, in particular on farm enterprises. Pavilion builds on its success Building on the success of the previous two years, the Agribusiness Pavilion will again be filled with business exhibits catering to all aspects of farming life. Administrator Sue Doyle said the committee continued to develop the pavilion, which was officially opened at the 2011 Elmore Field Days. She said a trade show-like format with some booth-type displays would be used again this year, thanks to the success of this format in 2012. Among the 85 exhibits, there will be a couple of large car exhibits. “Mitsubishi and Subaru have joined Mazda inside,” Ms Doyle said. There will also be a site celebrating Elmore Field Days’ 50 years. People will be able to see historic photos and memorabilia. “We’ve managed to keep the mix of exhibits true to the nature of the event,” Ms Doyle said. She said exhibitors represented “the business end of town” including agricultural machinery and services.
The 5808 sq m Agribusiness Pavilion was built to cater for all kinds of events. Seed suppliers, seed marketers, farm machinery guidance technology dealers, work safety organisations, composting providers and water businesses will have booths. A range of schools will also be represented so rural families can look at their education options. Ms Doyle said initially some exhibitors had been nervous about taking a stand inside a pavilion because it was not traditional for field days. But three years on, she said they loved it. One exhibitor, for example, had tripled the size of its site. The Agribusiness Pavilion has been used for other events including the National Cutting Horse Association’s Victorian Futurity and a farm machinery auction. “It wouldn’t be possible for Elmore to host these events without the pavilion,” Ms Doyle said.
“It was built to such a scale that nothing much couldn’t be put in there.” The Agribusiness Pavilion cost more than $1 million to build, made possible by the Victorian Government’s Regional Infrastructure Development Fund providing half of the funding. The committee has been approved for a Federal Government Regional Development Australia Fund grant of $500 000 towards a $1.2 million project to construct a permanent amenities block and a covered block of 100 stables. Ms Doyle said both structures would be adjacent to the exhibition pavilion, but with the change of Federal Government the committee was “holding its breath”. “We are hoping the new Federal Government honours the previously awarded grants,” she said.

Paddocks a hive of activity In-paddock demonstrations will once again be a popular feature at the Elmore Field Days with a varied line-up of cultivation, hay, silage, tillage and sowing machinery. As one of the few events which run in-paddock demonstrations, the Elmore Field Days is a great opportunity for farmers to see exactly how each machine works and what results they achieve. The demonstration site is on the eastern edge of the field days with easy access through gates 7 or 8. In-paddock demonstrations will kick off from 11 am with haymaking, cutting and feeding machinery. Farmers can see the Yeoman’s Plow, the Lely 745 Hibiscus rake, the RPC 445 Tornado bale wrapper and the 600 XLH trailed folding multidisc, plus many others. The afternoon sessions will showcase tillage, sowing, spraying and fertiliser spreading machinery. The full itinerary of the working demonstrations will be posted daily on each gate with further information.

Events centre adds to Elmore’s success The Elmore Events Centre will continue to offer a diverse range of events in the field days’ 50th anniversary year. Spread over 157 ha, the centre features first-class equestrian facilities, which have helped attract large shows such as the Victorian Futurity of the National Cutting Horse Association, which offered $85 000 in prizes. Elmore Events Centre administrator Sue Doyle said the Elmore Equestrian Park also had six dressage arenas, 112 yards
plus a two-room office building with kitchen, toilet and showers. The exhibition pavilion will host more than 100 exhibitors in its undercover space and the centre has a second exhibition pavilion as well as a shearing pavilion. The site also has the permanent Rochester Rotary Driver Education facility, which aims to educate Year 10, 11 and 12 students in driving techniques. The two-day course is specific to rural driving conditions and is aimed at reducing road trauma.
The Australian Travelling Fishing Show at site 55 will give spectators a fish-eye view. The 15 m long and 3 m high perspex-sided, giant mobile fish tank is filled with natural habitat and fish. Fishermen will demonstrate techniques using different types of lures and people will be able to see the fish react. There will also be informative presentations given on other aspects of fishing and enjoying the outdoors. Tennis Victoria at site 261 will run competitions in which children can win prizes and learn tennis skills. Storyteller Narelle Stone will again delight children with her

50 years…Wow, what an achievement This is a time of celebration and reflection regarding the inaugural members who came back from the Wimmera Field Days 51 years ago, held a meeting 50 years ago and said ‘Yes, we think we can do this.’ It is the support of the current committee, members, life governors, our exhibitors and the many volunteers that makes Elmore Field Days what it is today — a pioneer in agriculture, a leading events centre and a vibrant hub of community activity, playing a pivotal role in servicing the needs of Victoria and southern NSW. It was with such determination that in the first week of October 1964, Ayson’s Reserve by the Campaspe was transformed from a grassy reserve overlooking the river to a place where deals were brokered between growers and exhibitors, lifechanging decisions were made for their enterprises and feedback was given to the exhibitors, engineers and salesmen.
To this day things have not changed, except in volume — with exchange of information, cutting-edge technology and pioneering ways achieving the desired result as efficiently as possible. One of the key moments in this organisation’s history was when the Field Days, having outgrown Aysons Reserve, decided in 1985 to purchase 157 ha along with 190 Ml of water at the corner of Rosaia Rd and Midland Hwy. This is where the Elmore Field Days were conducted in 1989 until the present day and where now stands a multi-purpose event centre with assets and infrastructure of almost $5 million. This foresight has allowed the event to grow from 50 exhibitors to now more than 700 and allowed access for up to 40 000 visitors during the three-day event. One of the vital components of the field days’ sustainability during half a century has been the volunteer base, with numbers growing to 500 assisting in the running of the event, from catering to car parking, parcel pick-up to rubbish collection, and enabling the financial return from the field days and catering of more than

$2.7 million to community organisations. The future? … the possibilities seem endless. This is an era where some of our field day peers throughout rural Australia seem to be facing a greater struggle for survival, maybe from dwindling numbers of exhibitors or dwindling community involvement as society changes. We too face these challenges, but we’ve not only managed to attract a full house every year, our community is still our strongest supporter. We have been blessed with further generations, since that inaugural
committee, willing to take on the sometimes excessive demands that multicommittee involvement can bring them in such a small community. Remaining true to our founding members’ original purpose of agricultural and machinery field days we are still offering a quality event to the agricultural sector, keeping up with the times and having the conviction to expand our operation by offering our assets year-round as a unique rural events centre going from strength to strength working to secure our financial viability into the future.

Long involvement sees many changes Drummartin farmer Max Williams is proud to have been involved with Elmore Field Days for 40 years. Like every newcomer, the mixed farmer said he started out in the car park, parking cars. Mr Williams was president of the field days’ organising committee from 1990 to 1993; chairman of the static display from 1996 to 2008 and for the past four or five years has been the safety officer. He has enjoyed meeting people, including machinery dealers, from across Australia and even overseas, and said he had made many friends. “The sites have been consistently full and it is amazing where they come from,” Mr Williams said. Elmore Field Days is a global and local event. “The field days revolves around the community — we all drop tools and come out here to work together as a community,” Mr Williams said. “And when we work out here, the whole community benefits, for example funds are donated to local sports and other clubs, as well as schools.” In his four decades involved with Elmore Field Days, Mr Williams has seen the event change sites and grow, as well as big
changes in the broader agricultural industry. Elmore Field Days was once held at Aysons Reserve, but Mr Williams said it outgrew that site, which was also at risk from flooding.
Former Elmore Field Day president Max Williams continues to help in the running of the event. Pictured here with kelpie cross Boomer who companied him on delivering programs in recent weeks.
“In the 50 years, only one day has been cancelled — it was down on the old site and it got washed out.” The site was beside the Campaspe River, which flooded, and the best known casualty was an Elmore machinery dealer’s disc plough that was caught in the water. “He came out (to the site), but only about 3 or 4 inches of the disc plough was showing above the water,’’ Mr Williams said. “There was nothing we could do. We had to wait for the water to go down.” He said in the late 1980s, the committee bought a “block of dirt” on Midland Hwy and developed the site. Mr Williams said there had been big changes in machinery, including improved comfort thanks to cabins, airconditioning and guidance technologies. “Field days continue to get all the dealers together, so farmers can get prices and other information without travelling from Shepparton to Echuca to Bendigo.” He also believes having in-paddock demonstrations, a working shearing shed, and crop and livestock trials are helpful for the farmers.

Elmore presence helps lead to success Nelson Silos exhibited at the first Elmore Field Days and has done so every year without exception, director Lindsay Nelson says. He credits the experiences at Elmore Field Days with being instrumental in the success of the business. “One would have to say that is the reason why our business is what it is,” Mr Nelson said.
labour-saving machines in the workshops, transport and the internet. He said the company always exhibited at Elmore Field Days not only because of convenience — the event site is about a 20-minute drive from Nelson Silos’ Rochester head office — but also because of a sense of community. “We sometimes do Gippsland, Wimmera and Gundagai field days, but we always do Elmore Field Days,” the director said.
This distinctive float with a silo from Nelson Silos captures the ingenuity and fun of Elmore Field Days.
“The main thing is farmers come up to us and say, ‘We bought a silo off you 45 years “We have survived droughts and downturns ago, and we’re still using it.’” and stupid governments imposing costs.” Mr Nelson said farmers needed Elmore Mr Nelson founded Nelson Silos at Field Days for new ideas and labour-saving Rochester in 1957. Nelson silos are now used across Australia in industries as varied as mining, grain producing, dairy farming, horse racing stables, intensive farming and even food processing. Book celebrates Elmore’s history To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Elmore Field Days, a special book detailing the event’s history has been released. Elmore Field Days: the First 50 Years tells the story of the event, from the first gathering at Aysons Reserve in 1964 through to this year’s enormous undertaking at Elmore Events Centre. The book features stories about each of the 50 years, notable people involved in the field days, office bearers, pages from previous programs and a large collection of historical photos. It also has stories about the development of the Elmore Events Centre and other major events the centre has held, including the Elmore B & S Ball and the National Scout Jamboree. Elmore Field Days spokeswoman Sam Shotton said the idea for the celebratory

Irrigation industry stalwart recognised In recognition of lifelong service to the irrigation industry and environmental sustainability, Stanley Archard was inducted into the Order of Australia earlier this year.
Mr Jettner congratulated Mr Archard on his service to industry and the community,
More than 80 guests including friends, family and Archards Irrigation staff celebrated his career and dedication to the industry on Friday, August 23.
and his foresight to develop new products while integrating new technologies including laser levelling, satellite survey and more recently automated irrigation.
Guests travelled from throughout northern Victoria and the Riverina. They shared stories and reflected on some of the major changes in irrigated agriculture influenced by Mr Archard.
As the founding director of Cohuna-based business Archards Irrigation, Mr Archard instigated modern irrigation practices in the 1970s, as well as introducing laser technology.
Archards Irrigation director Brenton Jettner said Mr Archard’s most important contribution was bringing together the concepts of irrigation and land-forming to improve crop yields.
After more than 40 years in the industry, he officially retired from Archards Irrigation last December but is still doing some specialised work.
In Mr Archard’s address to his guests, he reflected on the rapid progress achieved in irrigation efficiency. “We were always thinking about how we could make irrigating better for farmers and we were fortunate that our customers wanted to test our innovations,” Mr Archard said.

New oat hay varieties on show at trial site Oat hay trials will feature again at the 2013 Elmore Field Days as the National Oat Program continues to develop and release new varieties. The 2013 trial at Elmore comprises 64 varieties sown by Agrisearch, which will assess agronomics and grain yield, while a subset of 32 varieties will be tested for hay yield and quality. Another trial of 32 has been planted at Horsham to determine hay yield, grain yield and quality as well as agronomics, and there is a trial of 60 grain entries at Rutherglen. New varieties released by the program include Forester, Tammar and Tungoo in hay, and Wombat and Dunnart in grain. Information collected from the Australiawide trials is compiled onto a long-term database, and contains information such
as hay and grain yield of each variety, and hay quality traits. The trials have found that the longterm top varieties for yield are Brusher, Mulgara, Winjardie, Wintaroo, Carrolup, WAOAT2332 and Yallara. The program has also just released a new variety called Forester; a late maturing variety suited to high rainfall and irrigated areas, but it will not be tested in Victoria. Buses will be available to take groups out to the SARDI trial site on Wednesday, October 2. Buses will depart at 11 am and 1 pm from AFIA at site 142. More information about the program is available from the SARDI National Oat Breeding Program, SARDI New Variety Agronomy Group, AEXCO or the SARDI website at www.sardi.sa.gov.au
McIntosh Silage Wagon.
New silage wagons built for serious work McIntosh Farm Machinery of New Zealand has built a new series of heavy-duty silage feed-out wagons called the Titan.
This new range of Titan silage wagons has sizes ranging from 12 cubic metres up to a whopping 25 cubic metres. There are a host of options including scales, brakes, extra cross conveyors and remote display screens, so a machine can be built to your specific needs.
Listening to customers’ needs, the Titan series of silage wagons has been built for the serious farmer and for high-use applications.
McIntosh Farm Machinery has also been developing a new series of beater wagons. These new wagons feature three power-take-off-driven horizontal beaters designed to incorporate and evenly feed out different types of products without going to the high cost of a mixer wagon. These units are well suited to many feed pad applications.
Their new heavy-duty 13 mm floor and elevator chains, large diameter drive sprockets and larger diameter drive shafts are designed to handle large and heavier volumes with ease. TracMac Farm Equipment’s Allan Slater said the Titan series of silage wagons offered significant changes that would make these wagons well suited to the needs of many dairy farmers across Australia. One new option is the new 1200 mm-wide chain-type cross conveyors. These new high-capacity conveyors will make feeding big square bales easier and will require less maintenance than a conventional belt-type cross conveyor.
McIntosh Farm Machinery has been building quality products and farm machinery for more than 60 years. Its range of silage wagons, bale feeders, tipping trailers and manure spreaders is built with strength, ease of operation and extended service life. For more information or to see the range of products, visit the staff at Elmore Field days site 457 or phone TracMac Farm Equipment on 5623 4023.

As combines throughout the world, including in Australia, get bigger they have tended to get hungrier but MacDon’s D65 Draper Header front has made advances in efficiency. Available up to 13.7 m in width, it is one of the widest production rigid headers in the world and has been designed to maximise the capacity of the largest combines available. MacDon product specialist David Rudolph said the extra width would make the decision to invest in a new Class 9 combine easier. Mr Rudolph said the D65 — like its predecessor MacDon D60 — was the ideal solution for Australian farmers looking to harvest multiple crops under a variety of conditions. “With a single header front they can do it all — they can cut super close to the ground when harvesting beans or lentils, or higher up when in cereals or canola. “Because of its width, it’s perfect for lighter crop conditions where the farmer needs to maximise volume into the combine, but it is also just as good in heavier conditions where smooth, consistent feeding is critical.” The D65 has made advances in the feed auger, draper drive and hydraulic system. The MacDon D65’s adjustable dual span
reel helps ensure a close and consistent relationship between the reel’s fingers and the cutter bar along the header’s entire width, which evens its feed. The flipping action of the D65’s reel when it gets to the bottom of the stroke lets farmers maintain a slow reel speed which helps keep the front of the feeder house cleaner. The MacDon D65 Draper Header is designed to deliver outstanding straight cut performance, especially when faced with tough harvesting conditions. MacDon 5 Series Drapers are designed to provide smooth, consistent heads-first feeding to the combine, even in the most challenging harvest conditions. Feeding crop heads first uses less fuel and takes less time to process. The Active Float System allows the D65 to float over rolling and uneven terrain. The MacDon reel offers four adjustable cam positions, so farmers can choose the setting that best suits harvest conditions. They can also use the header tilt and fore-aft reel positioning when even more aggressive action is needed. The D65 can be used for direct cutting on most current combines with MacDon’s CA25 Combine Adapter, as well as swathing canola, forage and other specialty crops with MacDon 5 Series Windrowers. Automation key to higher yields and water savings Rubicon Water will exhibit its FarmConnect range of products at Elmore Field Days, and the team is keen to provide farmers with information to take advantage of on-farm irrigation grants. FarmConnect helps farmers achieve more crop production with less water. Automation to manage higher flow rates and sensors for crop management deliver water when the crop needs it in a uniform manner. Last year FarmConnect won Elmore Field Days’ Telstra Technology and Innovation Award. FarmConnect uses the latest Rubicon technology BayDrive to automate bay gates and BladeValve to automate pipeand-riser valves. It also uses soil moisture probes to sense plant water demand for irrigation. Internet-based management software can be used on smart phones, tablets or computers to remotely manage the system. FarmConnect general manager Peter Moller said it was great many people were looking to take advantage of on-farm modernisation funding, but
they needed to understand the requirements to achieve benefits before investing in a system. “There’s much more involved than just installing high-flow gates and manual valves. These funding opportunities are not going to come around again, so you have to get it right first time,” Mr Moller said. He said installing a highperformance surface irrigation system could improve yield and save water and labour. “The one point that I can’t stress enough is that reliable automation is essential if you want to achieve these benefits,” he said. “With high-flow rates, closing a gate or valve even a little late will mean that high volumes of water are lost to surface run-off in a matter of minutes, as well as causing excessive waterlogging. “No matter how fast you can run, you’ll never manage to
keep up with it, and if you’re late closing a gate or valve all of your efficiency gains go out the window.” He said for the best results, people also needed to think about soil moisture monitoring to help determine the right time to irrigate and real-time flow measurement.
Rubicon’s Peter Moller and Testra’s Ray Pratt.
“We’re doing some really great work in conjunction with the University of Southern Queensland at the moment in the area of adaptive irrigation control, whereby irrigation duration is dynamically calculated depending on crop and soil conditions and the run times are changed during an irrigation program,” Mr Moller said. For more information, speak to Mr Moller and the team at site 63 in the Agribusiness Pavilion or visit www.rubiconwater.com/ elmore

Setting the hay baling benchmark New Holland’s TD5 utility range of tractors will be on display at Elmore Field Days, offering reliable tractors at competitive prices. New Holland Western Victoria business manager Marc Smith said the TD5 was a great tractor for a broad range of farming applications including dairy and livestock. “The series features four models all with distinctive New Holland styling that develop between 75 and 110 hp, making it practical for everyday tasks,” Mr Smith said. The TD5 range offers mechanical transmissions, easy maintenance, a new cab and a column-mounted hydraulic Power Shuttle as standard, which is unique in this segment. Also on display will be the New Holland T7 and T8 Series tractors and economy range of Workmaster tractors. The Workmaster tractor is a dependable, basic work horse that is simple to operate and easy on the wallet. The 45 and 55 hp Workmasters are powered by fuel-efficient, four-cylinder New Holland engines which are Tier III emissions compliant and can be
operated with diesel or B5 biodiesel fuel. They deliver quiet start-ups and smooth, quiet operation. “We are also pleased to be showcasing New Holland’s flagship T8 range at this year’s field days,” Mr Smith said. This tractor has revolutionised farming with its long wheelbase concept guaranteeing maximum productivity and farming efficiency. This ‘game changing’ tractor’s architecture marries the transport stability of a long wheelbase design with the manoeuvrability of traditional rowcrop tractors, to offer customers a truly universal machine.

New Holland’s new BigBaler sets the benchmark in the professional baling segment.
He said features including the MaxiSweep pick-up, enhanced pre-compression chamber crop flow monitoring, advanced CropID systems and double knot technology offered professional hay and forage operations, straw contractors and farmers unsurpassed baling performance.

Breeding dairy cows for profitability Livestock Improvement is a co-operative, owned by the farmer for the farmer. It exists to provide commercial dairy farmers with solutions that enhance their productivity and profitability. With a basic philosophy to breed an efficient cow that will deliver high milk solids and continue to get back in calf year after year, Livestock Improvement has bred some of the most profitable sires worldwide. Livestock Improvement has been around for more than 100 years and has the world’s largest dairy database with more than 20 million individual cow and bull records. This pedantic collecting of accurate and clean data has led to Livestock Improvement being a world leader in grass-based genetics and fertility. General manager Greg Hamill said the co-operative had one of the highest, if not the highest, rate of genetic gain worldwide with 60 per cent of on-farm productivity
gains coming directly from genetic improvement. “Innovation at the forefront of our business and the investment of millions of dollars each year into research and development have seen Livestock Improvement at the coalface of genomic technology and leading the way with more bulls fully sequenced than any other country,” Mr Hamill said. “This has not only led to a higher reliability with our genomic bulls, but has meant that Livestock Improvement has been able to discover the gene that causes the worldwide mutation of small calf syndrome. “Livestock Improvement is now the only genetics company that can accurately identify which bulls of theirs are carriers of this syndrome. “More and more dairy farmers are turning to Livestock Improvement as they discover that production is vanity and profitability is sanity,” he said.

“Why have a cow doing 500 kg of milk solids but weighs 700 kg when a 550 kg cow will also do over 500 kg of milk solids and get back in calf for the following season? “You don’t have to be a mathematician to work out what animal is going to increase your on-farm profitability, and that’s what Livestock Improvement is in this business for.” For more inforamtion visit Livestock Improvement at site 321.

Fabulous farm fashion on the catwalk The 13th Elmore Field Days’ Ag Art Wear competition has another strong field of 42 entrants.
“We look for things that match the criteria,” he said. “We look for the use of materials, we look for presentation and how the garment flows. The competition is so strong.”
This year, each section winner will receive a return flight and accommodation to compete at the 2014 New Zealand Fieldays Ag Art Wear international finals.
Mr Henty said how each garment was judged depended on the category it was entered in and whether it included any elements which really made it stand out.
The competition is designed to showcase rural fashion designing skills, but with a twist — the materials must be agriculturerelated.
He said another thing judges considered was how well the accessories matched the outfit — entrants often made their own shoes, hats and handbags.
Competition co-ordinator Joyce Giffin said some of the stranger materials used in designing the outfits were corks, ear tags and corrugated iron.
Judges watch each of the six parades, judging the wearability of the garments on different models, with the winners of each section announced after the final 2 pm parade on October 3.
“The corrugated iron wouldn’t have been easy to wear,” she said. The competition has four sections, including avant garde, under-21, designer and hats. The outfits are modelled in parades at 11 am and 2 pm each day, with crowds of 200 to 300 people expected to see the creations. “Once they get on stage, they really light up,” Mrs Giffin said. Four judges scrutinise the outfits during each of the six parades, and section winners are announced on the last day of the field days. Longley artist Tom Henty has been a judge for four of the previous Ag Art competitions and will join the judging panel again this year.
In 2012, the avant garde winner was ‘Solar’, a design by Bendigo Indigenous Homework Student Centre students. The purpose of the garment was to celebrate the importance of the sun to all living things. In the designer category, sisters Helen Williams and Leanne Donne took home first prize for ‘The Net’. The women collected pink netting from the farm to create a Marie Antoinette-esque masterpiece. The under-21 category winner was Angela Laurie-Mann who made ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ by using multi-coloured garbage bags and flywire. The colourful outfit was designed to create awareness about depression in country people.
The winner of the 2012 avant garde section, called ‘Solar’. It was designed by students from the Bendigo Indigenous Homework Student Centre and modelled by Jess. Ag Art Wear fashion parades will run daily at the 50th Elmore Field Days on October 1, 2, and 3. Parades at 11 am and 2 pm will showcase the four sections: avant garde, designer, under-21 and hats. Parades are held in the auditorium marquee, adjacent to the General Interest Pavilion.

Kuhn range covers machinery needs Kuhn will have every aspect of farming machinery covered at its site at this year’s Elmore Field Days – from ploughs and seed drilling equipment to fertiliser spreaders and hay-making equipment. Kuhn’s AXIS 50.1 H-EMC-W centrifugal fertiliser spreader features independent hydraulic spreading discs, which results in increased flexibility and less fuel consumption. Kuhn’s innovative fertiliser spreader features precision technology, with a weighing frame to indicate the quantity of fertiliser remaining. Electronic Mass Control technology continuously measures and regulates the fertiliser flow to each disc, ensuring a precise application rate. Perfect distribution can be achieved by selecting an output or environment approach, and each border and spreading disc speed can be programmed to individual specifications. Tips can be configured to eight different working widths (four per side) to adapt to different field configurations. The AXIS 50.1 H-EMC-W fertiliser spreader is designed to ensure a high output of up to 500 kg per minute, which can fertilise more than one
hectare per hour, helping to reduce fuel consumption. Kuhn will also display its expanded tined tool range with a single machine for surface stubble tilling and loosening. The Cultimer combines three tools for versatility – tines, discs and a roller. Rows of tines (three on mounted models and four on trailed models) break up the soil, crumble, mix intensively and level the surface in a single pass. The levelling discs, which help level the surface of the soil, are part of the roller holder and as such do not need adjustment when changing working depths. The roller helps control the working depth of the tines and compacts the soil and two types of rollers are available to suit different working conditions and degrees of compaction. For more information, see the Kuhn team at Elmore Field Days at site 284.
Belts and accessories for all farm needs
Merger brings wider access to market
Ag-Accessories provides a range of products and accessories for the agricultural industry including round balers, belting, tynes, moisture meters, log splitters and tools.
Two large water brokers have merged, with Tatura-based WaterNET and Wentworth-based Sunraysia Water Exchange joining to become Ruralco Water.
The company’s motto is “If you’ve got the baler, we’ve got the belt”, and with its vast range of quality belting, customers can be assured of finding the exact belt to suit their needs. Harvesting contractors are well catered for with a range of draper/ swather belts, and combine pick-up belts with or without double plastic fingers, nuts and bolts. All belts are manufactured to meet international standards and are made specifically to be used in agriculture applications, ensuring optimum strength, abrasion and oil resistance, and ozone and sunlight resistance. Ag-Accessories belts feature impregnated rubber bands, vulcanised rubber-coated fabrics and use materials that won’t shrink, rot or mildew which helps keep the baler belts running longer.
Ag-Accesssories also carries a wide range of lacing and the necessary tooling to suit all belting applications. The company is also the Australian distributor for Delmhorst moisture meters, suitable for cotton, hops, grain and of course, hay. Delmhorst’s two current hay meters both allow portable testing of hay at the windrow or the finished bale stage, with the FX-2000 having the added advantage of being able to test hay during the baling process. Ag-Accessories has been attending Elmore Field Days for more than two decades, so why not visit its site and view the range of agricultural belting, Delmhorst moisture meters and other associated items. For more information, phone 1800 036 111 or see the Ag-Accessories team at Elmore Field Days at site 98.
The new firm has maintained both offices and all staff with a focus on strong growth over the next few seasons as the business takes advantage of its enlarged footprint across the southern connected basin. Ruralco Water Tatura’s Lex Batters said the new company had effectively doubled the size of WaterNET, enabling greater access to buyers and sellers in the southern connected basin. “The merger has given us access to double the number of buyers and sellers across Victoria and the Riverina which will ensure we can secure the best market outcomes for our clients,” Mr Batters said.
find. Buyers have largely been horticultural producers in the Murray Valley, with NSW irrigators also active buyers in the Victorian market. Changes to carryover rules in the Goulburn system have reduced the volume of carryover in that system, resulting in reduced water availability. Buyers have been active in the market early, despite forecasts for a wet spring, to avoid a similar situation to last season where allocation prices rose throughout the season.
The allocation market has seen rapid price growth over the past month, with water trading as high as $65/Ml in early September from an opening price of $50/Ml in July.
Entitlement markets are also starting to tighten, with few sellers in the market in NSW or Victoria. Victorian Murray below the Barmah Choke is the most in demand with very few sellers in the market. Prices have risen to $1370/Ml in recent weeks for large parcels, while the Goulburn is trading at $1350/Ml in regular trade.
Mr Batters said the market had been driven higher by a lack of sellers in all markets, particularly with large parcels hard to

CopRice’s animal nutrition products are a great choice for sheep and other animals.
CopRice’s high quality animal feeds improve animal performance.
The animal feed experts CopRice is the animal feed division of SunRice, the farmer co-operative that grows and markets all rice produced in Australia. CopRice has been manufacturing high quality animal feeds for more than 30 years with formulations based on the latest livestock nutritional and management research and practical knowledge to ensure optimum animal performance. The CopRice animal nutrition products are a great choice for a wide range of species including household pets, working dogs, poultry, horses, dairy and beef cattle, sheep and pigs. The pelleting process is
a superior method of preparing animal nutrition products for several reasons:
vitamins and minerals that are uniformly fixed.
• Steam processing results in better starch utilisation.
• No segregation of ingredients – every mouthful is the same.
The steam causes gelatinisation of the starch with two important results for digestion:
• Limited dust and fines in pelleted feeds reduces wastage.
1. Enhanced ability of the starch to absorb water leading to improved digestibility and feed conversion; and 2. Increased speed at which enzymes can break the starch to convert it to more soluble carbohydrates including blood sugar such as glucose. • No further processing is required. • All pellets are balanced with essential
CopRice has the technology and experience to expertly formulate, blend and pelletise in a form that can be easily digested by high performing livestock whether they be backyard hens, high producing dairy cows or performance horses. CopRice, as a division of Ricegrowers Ltd (trading as SunRice), has exclusive access to all by-products of the rice milling process including highly nutritious rice
Wipe-out weeds in a single pass Eastern Spreaders has the perfect solution for any unruly weeds and weed problems – the Rotowiper weed wiper. The Rotowiper weed wiper has a unique rotating drum system which applies the herbicide directly to the most receptive part of the plant, on the underside of the leaves and the stem.
One of the benefits of the single-pass application machine was that it only used the chemicals when it hit the weeds, meaning it wouldn’t damage pasture, Mr Freeman said. The company is the Rotowiper distributor for Victoria, Southern NSW/Riverina, South Australia and Tasmania. NDE vertical feed mixers will also be on display, which will suit farmers who need a strong, efficient mixer with the versatility to handle different types of feed. Eastern Spreaders will also have the full range of Marshall spreaders at the field days, which are in continual development to cater for wider spreading patterns as a result of increasing boom spray widths.
Page 34—‘Elmore Field Days’, October 2013
CopRice operates three modern stockfeed mills. The Leeton mill produces specialty and bulk feeds and the Tongala and Cobden mills produce bulk feeds. This gives the company both the capacity and geographical spread to service the Australian mainland, Tasmania and overseas markets such as New Zealand and the Middle East. CopRice invites people attending Elmore Field Days to visit its team at site number 336 to discuss animal nutrition.
Automated system makes life easier for famers For 18 years Graeme Wright has been making a difference to farmers’ lifestyles and profits with his WiSA irrigation system.
Eastern Spreaders managing director Albert Freeman said the Rotowiper weed wiper was more effective than other machines because it just required a single pass to fully coat all the weeds, rather than a double pass. He said the rotating drum wiped one side of the weeds with chemicals and then flicked the plant over to coat the second side.
bran. Rice bran is the outer layer of the brown rice grain that contains the majority of the grain’s vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats and fibre and is therefore a highly nutritious ingredient.
The Rotowiper weed wiper in action. Mr Freeman said the Marshall spreaders have the latest in up-and-coming variable rate technology and were compatible with John Deere, Topcon and Trimble systems. Eastern Spreaders is also a distributor for a range of equipment, including New Concept roller mills, Boomerang twin bale feeders, John Berends implements, Crump fertiliser spreaders, Yeomans ploughs and Faber toolboxes. Mr Freeman said the Faber toolboxes were a popular choice because they were both heavy duty and secure. For more information, see the Eastern Spreaders team at site 227 or call into its office at 9508 Murray Valley Hwy, Kerang.
WiSA’s automated control system has helped to improve the operation and efficiency of all types of irrigation systems, including pipe and riser, bordercheck, pivot, lateral drip and micro-sprinkler systems. WiSA’s automated irrigation system means farmers have greater control and flexibility over their irrigation management. Real time data is collected through soil moisture probes and other sensors and sent from the WiSA field units back to a computer. Using the WiSA AquaLink software, the information is collected and used to make essential decisions on how and when to irrigate the farm. The irrigation system can be remotely controlled from any smartphone or tablet. Mr Wright has installed the WISA system into all types of farms such
as viticulture, vegetables, orchards, and broad acre. He is now helping famers overseas as well as one of the largest cooperatives in the United States installing the WiSA system on their farms. Closer to home at Norioka, Keith and Jeanette Holland had a WiSA automated system installed on their property in 2011 and have been impressed with the results. “I now have complete control of my irrigation system, and irrigation can be easily assessed and controlled even when off farm,” Mr Holland said. “Cost savings have been evidenced through reduced travel time and fuel to open and close bay outlets, and reduced water usage. “Previously, risks of tiredness through working at night, often alone, and the threat of encountering snakes in the dark, are now eliminated by automated scheduling.” For more information, visit WiSA at Elmore Field Days at site 325.

Innovative machinery to increase farming efficiency At O’Connors’ Elmore Field Days site, representatives will be able to demonstrate farm machinery to increase productivity. O’Connors and MacDon staff will be showing a M205 selfpropelled windrower with a R85 4.9 m mower conditioner front fitted.
and ensuring thorough conditioning.
He said MacDon’s Ultra Glide Cab suspension system offered what was likely to be the smoothest ride experienced in a windrower. “Comfort is particularly important on long days and it helps to reduce operator fatigue,” Mr Edgar said.
MacDon’s R85 Rotary Disc features significant improvements in frame strength, cutting angle, disc pattern, header flotation and conditioning.
Switching from field to highway mode takes only three seconds with MacDon’s Dual Direction technology, available on M205 and M155 windrowers.
This next generation rotary disc machine delivers greatly improved cutting, crop handling and windrow formation, especially in tough, heavy or wet crop conditions.
Mr Edgar said the M Series had been on the Australian market for two years and its popularity was increasing.
R85 cutter bars feature a single removable key on the outside hubs that will shear if the disc comes in contact with an object that stops its movement. The hub can then be removed and the key replaced, allowing the operator to quickly get back to cutting.
He said the windrower’s harvest manager pro monitor system also made work easier for the operator.
O’Connors sales representative Tim Edgar said this combination would increase productivity in the upcoming hay season, including for contractors.
This technology lets the operator switch to road travel mode in seconds and travel at up to 37 km/h without needing to detach the header.
The 4.9 m R85 has an overshot auger to more efficiently transfer crop from the discs to the wide conditioner rolls and improve cutting performance in tougher conditions.
MacDon’s Dual Direction technology saves farmers time and labour.
Ausplow staff will also be on hand to explain the features of the brand’s Deep Blade System Auseeder precision seeding system for broadacre farming. A D300-40 model will be on display to show the design features that ensure seeding accuracy with excellent subsoil cultivation and minimal topsoil disturbance.
To improve conditioning performance, the R85 Rotary Disc has been equipped with the widest steel-on-steel rolls on the market at 3000 mm.
People will be able to examine these innovative machines and book test drives with O’Connors’ staff at site 347.
Mr Edgar said wider rolls increased crop contact, improving crimping performance

Clipex’s animal handling division national sales manager Brad Swadesir said the robust and feature-packed unit was the best value for money multi-purpose sheep handler on the market. Clipex also has a big, strong and easy-touse steel post called the Clipex Beefy, wellsuited for feral fencing and high pressure fence applications. The company’s unique clip makes erecting fences at least 33 per cent quicker in most applications. Clipex also has a full range of fencing wire with the Australian rights to sell wire made by Bekaert, the largest wire manufacturer in the world. “We can offer great value without compromising on quality. With most sizes available and with long-life coatings we recommend you try us for a quote as we feel you will be more than satisfied,” Mr Swadesir said.
Waterpool Co-op, the member-owned water trading co-operative based in Kyabram, has successfully completed its first season of trading. The co-operative began after the closure of Watermove. Waterpool offers the same pooled water exchange trading model that was enjoyed by customers of Watermove. The pooled water exchange provides a transparent, market-driven price disclosure model of allocation trading.
Waterpool’s membership base has grown to more than 500 and has traded more than 80 000 Ml in its first season.

Violet Town Rural carries an enormous range of products.
Waterpool’s one-off membership fee of $50 — that can be deducted from the first successful trade — lets traders join the growing membership which includes a variety of agricultural and horticultural businesses as well as semi-government authorities and individuals. Members, through their voting rights, have a ‘one
member one vote’ ongoing say in the operation of their co-operative. Waterpool also ensures its members are kept up-to-date with the latest market trends and industry information via its informative website and weekly newsletter. Trades are being conducted in an ever expanding area across the whole of the southern connected Murray-Darling Basin, with NSW and South Australian traders joining the strong northern Victorian base. Waterpool not only conducts a pooled water exchange, but also trades permanent water entitlements all year round. The more recent products of forward allocation and carryover protection have also been added to Waterpool’s services. One of Waterpool’s guiding principles is to provide transparent and ethical water trading for all water users and is now widely regarded as the benchmark for all water trading. Waterpool has been selected as a finalist in the Murray Campaspe Regional Business Awards. Haeusler’s sets focus on total solution Customers are increasingly seeking new and smarter solutions to their needs and John Deere is responding to this by integrating technology to provide these solutions into its machinery. This has prompted a total rethink of the way Haeusler’s does business, according to Haeusler’s Mildura branch manager Lou Haeusler. “As the technology has been integrated we have up-skilled our staff and employed a new breed of Integrated Solutions Consultants to engage with the farming community so they can implement and understand these solutions,” Mr Haeusler said. “Where once something like auto-steer was a new and exciting technology, it is now treated as standard equipment and sold, serviced and supported the same as other machinery through the traditional departments. This in turn allows our Integrated Solutions Consultants to focus on new solutions, data management, training and integrating new technology into the business,” Mr Haeusler said.
One of the ways Haeusler’s is embracing this strategy is an approach to field days with less of a focus on machinery and a greater focus on the total solution. The Haeusler’s field days sites are now more corporate and present an environment that allows better communication of the solutions available to customers. This new approach to field days sites has already been successful, with Haeusler’s taking home the Best Large Site 2013 award at the Speed Field Days from July 31 to August 1. The site combined a large marquee and machinery display, including a Midwest Fabrication Durus Premium 60 ft front on a John Deere S680 combine, plus spraying equipment and John Deere wheel and track tractors. The adoption of the John Deere FarmSight Strategy also involves Haeusler’s taking a greater presence throughout the cropping cycle. Relationships with third parties, such as agronomists, provide for better decision support and allow customers to work smarter, enabled by their John Deere technology. The aim is customers, John Deere Technology and Haeusler’s, working together to deliver a distinctive experience. Visit Haeusler’s at Elmore Field Days at site 356.

The See Banjo Run fundraising team will be at Elmore Field Days at site 370. Mrs O’Brien’s sister, hairdresser Narelle Robertson, and a team of experienced hairdressers from Rochester’s New Image Hair and Beauty will donate their time for the three days to cut the hair of men, women and children at the field days. There will also be face painting, hair chalk, hair feathers, henna tattoos, a photo booth, a colouring competition and more. All proceeds raised will go towards Banjo’s ongoing therapies and equipment as he grows. A fundraiser for bubbly toddler Banjo O’Brien will be held at the Elmore Field Days.
Fielding help for Banjo Despite fighting to survive since his premature birth, two-and-a-half-year-old Banjo O’Brien is bubbly and has an infectious smile. Mum Diana O’Brien said when they were in medical waiting rooms, Banjo liked to eye people off until they smiled back. Banjo was born at 24 weeks gestation. He spent 100 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, then 40 days in special care. After a week of being home, the family had to rush him back to hospital, where he stayed for another nine days. Due to his extremely premature birth he has quadriplegic cerebral palsy. “He is affected on a high level which restricts his ability to move as the messages from the brain to his muscles get distorted, making it hard to control his body,” Mrs O’Brien said. “Banjo is still learning to sit, roll and crawl at two-and-a-half years old, he has no hand or arm control.” His family is constantly researching new therapies and options to help with his mobility. In September, they attended a one-week intensive Vojta therapy course on the Sunshine Coast. “So far this therapy has been the most beneficial to his movement disorder,” Mrs O’Brien said. Banjo is also booked in to do Thera Suit Therapy in November and again next May in Melbourne through the Napa Centre from the United States. The three-week intensive program is based on strengthening and conditioning, decreasing unwanted reflexes and teaching new improved motor patterns through repetition and correct alignment. The O’Briens hope to raise $40 000 to enable Banjo to undertake physiotherapy, speech therapy, osteotherapy and

hopefully stem cell therapy, which is only available overseas. Mrs O’Brien said online communities of parents whose children have cerebral palsy had provided a wealth of knowledge about different therapies and lifestyle measures including diet, and support. She said her and Brad’s family had also offered great support, particularly when Mrs O’Brien was put to bed rest when she was 31 weeks pregnant with their younger daughter Nellie. “The day Nellie was born, Banjo was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and spent the next two-anda-half weeks in the intensive care unit.” Mrs O’Brien said Banjo had contracted a virus and because of his under-developed immune system it made him so sick that he needed to be hospitalised. “We have spent a lot of time in hospital this year which means we have had to stop some therapies and focus on keeping him well,” she said. The family is determined Banjo will do as much therapy as he can while he is young, because it will be better for his long-term outcome. “We give it our all while he is young because he has the most opportunity to learn and the brain has plasticity and can be ‘rewired’ more easily the younger you are.” Thanks to the family’s determination and love, Banjo has developed better head control, can sit up when propped up with pillows and can sometimes roll himself on his side. He is even starting to verbalise — when he makes sounds that sound like “mum”, “dad” and “yes”, Mrs O’Brien said it was pretty exciting. Last October, the O’Briens held their first fundraising event — a trivia night in Colbinabbin that was so successful that it allowed the family to organise therapies for Banjo for the past year and to see which worked best. Banjo O’Brien, left, with sister Nellie, three months, father Brad and mother Diana.
