B

ased on the real-life relationship of composer Marvin Hamlisch and lyricist Carole Bayer Sager, a wisecracking composer finds a new, off-beat lyricist. When Vernon Gersch invites Sonia Walsk to his luxury Manhattan apartment the meeting uncovers two very different personalities. He is aloof and focused, while she is disorganised and distracted – but Vernon has already written music to one of Sonia's lyrics, so they decide to forge ahead. To get to know each other better on a professional level, Vernon and Sonia go out to dinner. But, hearing one of their songs played at the venue that night, the couple admit to their deeper feelings and embark on a relationship. After living and working together, the romance soon hits trouble. They're Playing Our Song features two star characters (played by husband and wife Scott Irwin and Danielle

Barnes) singing such memorable songs as I Still Believe in Love, If He Really Knew Me, They’re Playing Our Song and Fallin’, making this romantic comedy an unforgettable evening of stellar musical entertainment. YARRAWONGA CHRONICLE/COROWA FREE PRESS - DEC 2013 -JAN 2014 - ISSUE 48

Hothouse Season 2014 HotHouse Theatre has pulled back the curtains to reveal its new Season 2014.

J

on Halpin, the artistic director, has developed an exciting program of national and local talent, bringing six major shows to the Albury Wodonga stage next year. HotHouse Theatre is truly unique within regional Australian theatre, demonstrated by this year’s calibre and range of talent being introduced to the border audiences. The 2014 Season kicks off with ‘Stories I Want to Tell You in Person’ fresh from its New York season (co-produced by Belvoir and Malthouse Theatre), by Lally Katz, one of the funniest and most original playwrights working in Australia today. Katz shares with the audience how she spent the commission she received to write a play about a fortune teller, by actually going to fortune tellers in New York, and the rest. A captivating one-woman show, its a tale of art, love, money, shoes…and the apocalypse. Followed by the most well-known play this season, ‘1984’ is adapted and created by Shake & Stir Theatre Company from Queensland. Orwell’s prescient 1948 novel was a terrifying vision of the future in which everyone is slave to a tyrannical regime. Responsible for coining the terms Big Brother, thoughtcrime, doublethink and Newspeak, it promises a thrilling and frightening theatrical event set against a dynamic digital backdrop. The show with the most local intrigue is sure to be ‘Letters from the Border’, celebrating Albury Wodonga, using the community’s own words. The project has involved sifting through letters published in the Border Mail and the Albury Banner over the last 100 years. We revisit our region’s history and culture, centring on key historical events, shifting attitudes and issues that have been part of our identity since Bungambrewatha became Albury in the 1830s, and Belvoir became

Wodonga in the 1850s. The rest of the program keeps up the pace with a highly imaginative work called ‘The Motion of Light in Water’ by Marcel Dorney, a shared journey and struggle against the codes of gender, race and economic class today; ‘Food’ by Steve Rodgers is a coproduction by Force Majeure and Belvoir, where a fast food road-side café transforms itself into a real-life restaurant serving comfort food, with audiences enjoying breaking bread in the theatre; and finally ‘Packed’ by The Escapists (famous for boy girl wall from our 2011 Season), a comedy about the common ‘rite of passage’ taken by many young Australians going abroad to ‘find themselves’ – revealing how life’s lessons are unique to us all. It’s going to be a bumper season in 2014.

Event co-ordinator Shaun Whitechurch said securing John Willamson and Beccy Cole on for the Australia Day was a great coup for Corowa. “What's more Australian than John Williamson singing amongst the gum trees at sunset on Australia Day,” Shaun said. John Williamson’s journey includes induction into the prestigious ARIA Hall of Fame, three ARIA Awards, 24 Golden Guitars, MO Awards, APRA Awards, platinum and gold albums and more than 4 million album sales. It started with classic ‘Old Man Emu’ back in 1970, which spent five weeks at number one on the charts, to the creation of hits including ‘True Blue’, ‘Cootamundra Wattle’, ‘Galleries of Pink Galahs’ and ‘Hawkesbury River Lovin’ - to name just a few of the songs written into music lovers hearts by John Williamson. Likewise, Beccy Cole has cemented herself as a firm favourite on the country music scene.
